United and Southwest are expected to do so soon.</strong></li></ul><p><br />The future of luggage may be delayed, as airlines are set to ban smart luggage that includes non-removable lithium-ion batteries.</p><p>American Airlines announced its ban on Dec. 1, and other airlines have followed, including Alaska Airlines and Delta. United and Southwest are also expected to announce similar policies, <a href="http://money.cnn.com/2017/12/05/technology/smart-bag-limits/index.html">according to CNN</a>. The first bans are set to go into effect on Jan. 15.</p><p>Smart luggage bags have features like USB ports that can be used to charge phones or laptops, motors, and tracking systems. But airlines fear that the lithium ion batteries the bags carry could spark fires in overhead compartments or cargo holds. </p><p><span>"We love innovation and understand why smart bags are so appealing for <keyword id="6354692" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Travel">travel</keyword>," Alaska Airlines manager of dangerous goods Mike Tobin said in a <a href="https://blog.alaskaair.com/travel-tips/smart-bags-on-planes/">statement</a>. "While these restrictions may pose a challenge to some of our guests, there have been no incidents to date with smart bags on airplanes and we want to keep it that way." </span></p><p><span>Most airlines will allow smart luggage on their flights if the batteries are removed, but some smart luggage bags don't give users that option.</span></p><p><span>"Before and at the time of production, we did our due diligence to make sure that we complied with all international regulations defined by DOT and FAA," smart luggage company Bluesmart said in a <a href="http://oooo.bluesmart.com/2017/12/01/travel-smarter-with-smart-bags/">statement</a>. "While most airlines understand and approve of smart luggage, others might still be getting up to speed. Airlines will begin banning smart luggage in 2018

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;"><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Raden</span></p><p class="caption">Raden CEO Josh Udashkin</p></div><p></p></div></div>Raden CEO Josh Udashkin says he filmed travelers struggling at the airport while researching what "smart" features people would want in a suitcase.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">He noticed a few pain points that kept coming up, he tells Business Insider. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The first was how awful trying to get a suitcase under the weight limit can be. Someone is frantically switching items between suitcases, putting their shoes around their neck, or in some cases, simply giving up. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The second thing <span>Udashkin noticed </span>was that a lack of outlets often forced people to huddle around central charging stations, as if they were oases in the desert. And some people were shut out.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;"><span>With <a href="https://www.raden.com/">Raden's line of smart bags</a>, Udashkin has introduced features to fix these problems, all wrapped up in a slick form factor. Raden suitcases have handles that weigh themselves, via a smartphone app, and a built-in battery that lets you charge your phone if an outlet isn't available. And they come in colors ranging from black to pastels.</span></span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;"><span>In its first four months of operation, Raden sold over $2 million worth of bags from its website and 6,000-square-foot Soho showroom.</span></span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;"><span><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Business Insider</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></span></span></p><h2><strong>The brand</strong></h2><p><span style="font-weight: 400;"><span>When you walk into the SoHo showroom, which Raden gets rent-free from a friend of <span>Udashkin's,</span> there is one thing that is clear from the start: Raden wants to be cool. </span></span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;"><span>The display of bags looks like an art installation, and psychedelic lighting floods the sparse room. <span>Udashkin, an erstwhile lawyer and former director of international development for shoe giant Aldo, doesn't want to build a utility, he wants to build a brand - and he</span><span> thinks there's an opening in the market.</span></span></span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;"><span><span>"Younger people don't have an affinity to a [particular luggage] brand," he explains. </span></span></span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;"><span><span>There are heavyweights in the industry, but people don't have the passion for these companies that they have for Apple, let's say, which leaves them vulnerable to an upstart like Raden. </span></span></span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;"><span><span><span>Udashkin also cites a</span> recent history of consumer products being challenged by venture-backed newcomers: </span></span></span><span style="font-weight: 400;"><span><span>glasses, mattress, razors, and so on. Raden, in that vein, has raised </span></span></span><span style="font-weight: 400;">$3.5 million from First Round Capital, Lerer Hippeau Ventures, and private investors.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;"><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Business Insider</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></span></p><h2><strong>The tech</strong></h2><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Even though Raden is funded by tech investors, <span>Udashkin says his focus has never been to cram as many tech features into the bag as possible.</span></span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;"><span>The two marquee features are the <span>7,800 mAH battery </span>and the self-weighing handle. There is also a locator feature, but it uses Bluetooth, which would only let you know if your bag is coming down the carousel. It lacks GPS, so it wouldn't help you if your bag is lost, or in a different airport.</span></span></p><p>Still, the other two features it's touting - the battery pack, and the self-weighing handle - are well-chosen, and <span>Udashkin</span> says they speak to Raden's design philosophy, which is to be <span>"smart" only when you need it. An example of this is the manual locks Raden bags have. Raden could have used electric locks, <span>Udashkin explains, but they are more error prone and don't provide that much added utility. So they didn't implement them. The same is true of adding GPS, which would have necessitated some kind of expensive subscription plan, he says.</span></span></p><p>And <span>Udashkin laughs when the topic of futuristic suitcases that follow you are around is brought up. That's a firm "no."</span></p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Business Insider</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><h2><strong><span>The future</span></strong></h2><p><span><span>As the initial rush of Raden's late March launch winds down, <span>Udashkin is examining which retailers the company wants to partner with.</span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span>"W<span>hen we launched, 250 retailers reached out," he says. But <span>Udashkin</span> doesn't want there to be any promotions or markdowns on Raden products, so he's taking his time. </span></span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span><span>The bags cost <span>$295 for a carry-on, $395 for the "check-in" version, and $595 for the pair. This isn't outrageous for high-quality luggage, and slightly cheaper than some "smart" <a href="http://www.bluesmart.com/one">competitors like Bluesmart</a>. </span></span></span></span></span><span><span><span><span><span><span>But the ultimate success of Raden won't likely hinge on small price differentials over competitors, but on whether <span>Udashkin can make the brand something that people love. <p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Avery Hartmans/Business Insider</span></p><p class="caption">Away was founded by two former Warby Parker execs who wanted to create the "perfect suitcase."</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Imagine a world where your luggage rolls effortlessly next to you, you can charge your phone without searching the airport high and low for an outlet, and you don't have to struggle to jam your heavy bag in an overheard compartment. </p><p>That's the world that <a href="https://www.awaytravel.com/" target="_blank">Away</a> wants to provide with its line of modern, durable suitcases. </p><p>The New York-based startup - which launched in early 2016 - aims to create "the perfect suitcase." The company makes carry-on bags and full-size suitcases, along with accessories like luggage tags and <keyword id="6354692" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Travel">travel</keyword> blankets.</p><p>So what is the perfect suitcase? And can it actually live up to the hype? I got to try one on a recent trip and found out for myself.</p><h2>Quick, easy charging </h2><p>I used Away's smallest model, the <a href="https://www.awaytravel.com/luggage/carry-on/sand" target="_blank">Carry-On</a>, on a five-day trip to the San Francisco area. The bag retails for $225, about $25 less than a Samsonite bag of approximately the same size. The option to charge my phone via my suitcase is one I never knew I wanted, but now can't imagine living without.</p><p>As someone who frequently lets my phone's battery run down all the way, but also loves the convenience of having my boarding pass on my phone, being able to charge up my phone while waiting for my flight - and not being tethered to the wall - was crucial, and helped make my travel experience almost seamless.</p><p>The bag has two USB ports hidden underneath the retractable handle which allow you to charge an iPhone up to five times and an iPad more than once.</p><p>Away includes  a cable to recharge the suitcase's built-in battery and a screwdriver if you want to remove the battery completely. The company recommends you do this if traveling to Asia, as customs officials can be more strict. </p><p>It's worth noting that Away is one of several options for so-called "smart luggage," <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/raden-makes-smart-suitcases-2016-8/#heres-the-outside-of-radens-store-in-soho-in-new-york-city-1">with Raden</a> and Bluesmart One also selling device-charging bags.</p><h2>An 'impenetrable' exterior</h2><p>Before leaving, I set a goal for myself: I would only bring the Away bag and try not to overpack. That turned out to be surprisingly easy thanks to the bag's flexible outer shell.</p><p>All of Away's bags have the same exterior: a plastic, scratch-resistant surface that won't break under pressure. In fact, Away describes the outside of the bag as "impenetrable." </p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_left"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Avery Hartmans/Business Insider</span></p><p class="caption">The smaller carry-on size measures about 22 inches tall, which means it easily fits into nearly all overhead bins.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>That came in handy while transporting my bag everywhere from the New York City subway to the overhead bins on a very full JetBlue flight. It was durable enough to hold up while traversing Grand Central Station and flexible enough that I could stuff it in the bins worry-free.</p><p>And after five days of travel, my bag came home without a scratch.</p><p>The flexibility also aids in packing. Of any suitcases I've packed in, Away's was the easiest, since I was able to stuff clothes and shoes in without worrying about it putting stress on the zippers. Plus, I was able to push down on the outer shell as much as I wanted without worrying about putting stress on the plastic. </p><h2>The interior</h2><p>While nothing about the interior of the bag is revolutionary, it is cleverly designed. One side of the bag is intended for shoes and other harder objects like toiletries, while the other side is meant for clothes and soft items.</p><p>Every bag comes with a detachable laundry bag that's folded inside a small pocket and can be unrolled, filled, and attached to the inside of the suitcase with a metal snap. Each bag also has a stiff pocket that can be used to store a laptop, tablet, or book, and doubles as a means to tamp down your clothes. </p><p>As a chronic over-packer, I was pleasantly surprised by how much I was able to fit inside the suitcase (three pairs of pants, six tops, two sweaters, two pairs of shoes, and much more). It's deceptively spacious inside and could have served me well even if I was traveling for a full week. </p><p>And even fully packed, the bag is super-lightweight. The bag has a lifetime guarantee, so it could be the only luggage you ever have to purchase.</p><p>What sold me most on the suitcase was how compact and stylish it is. And since Away was <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/away-raises-8-million-for-suitcases-2016-9" target="_blank">founded by two Warby Parker alums</a>, so it makes sense. The design of the bag is simple, modern, stylish, and - best of all - unisex.</p><p>The fact that it's tech-enabled?
