<br /> With marginal growth in net profit, mid-tier software services firm <keyword id="6357902" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="MindTree">Mindtree</keyword> is on its way to shore up its digital business. It bought UK-based <keyword id="1025474" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="SAP-Hana">SAP HANA</keyword> consultancy <keyword id="2332027" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Bluefin-Solutions">Bluefin Solutions</keyword> and Ohio, US-based Relational Solutions Inc for a combined value of nearly $75 million.<br />
<br /> Mindtree bought Bluefin Solutions for about 42.3 million pounds, as part of a push to help its largest customers simplify their business processes using SAP's business software. Chief executive <keyword id="372282" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Krishnakumar-Natarajan">Krishnakumar Natarajan</keyword> said the acquisition would help Mindtree's customers in rapidly digitizing their operations.<br />

"We are very excited about the synergies both Mindtree and Bluefin bring in the digital space. The acquisition will strengthen our position to offer the full spectrum of SAP services. Bluefin's focus on SAP HANA and their expertise across the SAP portfolio creates the scale to deliver transformational services while driving greater efficiencies and operational effectiveness," said Krishnakumar Natarajan, chief executive and co-founder of Mindtree.<br />

Mindtree also bought US-based analytics provider Relational Solutions Inc (RSI) for about $10 million. RSI provides analytics solutions primarily for the consumer packaged goods sector.<br />
<br />
Coming back to its growth in net profit, for the quarter ended June 30, net profit stood at $21.8 million, up 0.6% from the same period last year. Revenue climbed 9.7% to $154.9 million, helped mainly by new deal wins during the quarter and a strong performance from its digital business which grew 12.7% sequentially.<br />
<br />
In rupee terms, net profit jumped 6.8% from the year-ago period to Rs. 138.2 crore, while revenue rose 16.4% to Rs. 981.6 crore.<br />
<br />
Mindtree's shares closed nearly flat at Rs.1225 on the BSE on Thursday.<br />

Mindtree acquires two companies to shore up its digital business

You spend your entire life in the open water. You can see well enough, but you mostly listen.</p><p><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/whales-kim-kardashian-vocal-fry-hunt-deep-sea-study-dolphins-2023-3">Songs of other whales</a> help you communicate and travel with your pod. Rhythmic waves crashing on distant shores orient you on migrations that span thousands of miles each year.</p><div type="image" title="sperm whale underwater in deep blue ocean" height="1799" width="2399" msid="99622437" hostid="261"></div><p>But a distant drone, like white noise, is starting to obscure the sounds you rely on.</p><p>It's the constant hum of all the cargo, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/cruise-liners-elon-musk-spacex-starlink-internet-ships-2023-3">cruise</a>, and charter <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/russian-oil-is-flowing-secret-seas-transfers-china-moscow-europe-2022-8">ships</a> crisscrossing the ocean and trailing the coasts. Their noise is growing more thunderous each year as their propellers blare into the ocean void.</p><p>"A ship traveling from Tokyo to Shanghai is going to have direct sound impacts in that area but could potentially send noise all the way across the ocean to Los Angeles," Ben Halpern, a marine ecologist at the University of California, Santa Barbara, told Insider.</p><p>At any given moment, thousands of <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/dead-whales-increase-due-to-climate-change-cargo-ship-strikes-2023-2">commercial ships</a> are traveling over the oceans.</p><div type="image" title="China cargo ship Hong Kong harbor" height="3494" width="4658" msid="99622438" hostid="261"></div><p>"You can get quite a substantial hum of all those propellers that can potentially cover up that natural noise," Halpern said.</p><p>It's not just whales that suffer. Many marine creatures rely on sound to communicate, navigate, find food, or avoid predators.</p><p>Research indicates that the overpowering hum of ships can <a href="https://affiliate.insider.com?h=41606ae5fcc3b19d4eca9744907767889a7f671da2edfdea28649219093d2a1d&amp;postID=64344c1632953006541763d1&amp;site=bi&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.nature.com%2Farticles%2Fsrep05891%3Forigin%3Dppub">kill off</a> sea-slug larvae, make humpback whales <a href="https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0204112">stop singing</a>, and cause schools of bluefin tuna to change direction and become "<a href="https://www.int-res.com/abstracts/meps/v331/p243-253/">uncoordinated</a>." Other studies have found that the temporary disappearance of shipping traffic during COVID-19 lockdowns brought a <a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/health-coronavirus-hongkong-dolphins-idINKBN2650B0">resurgence</a> in endangered pink dolphins near Hong Kong and, after 9/11, reduced <a href="https://royalsocietypublishing.org/doi/10.1098/rspb.2011.2429">stress</a> among North Atlantic right whales.</p><p>Much of this underwater noise comes from ships' propellers. But it's not from the mechanics of the propeller motors — it's the physics at the tips of the propeller blades.</p><div type="image" title="two workers in yellow hardhats pass a pole up scaffolding beneath a huge ship propeller with spiraling blades larger than the people, attached to a giant red ship" height="1560" width="2081" msid="99622439" hostid="261"></div><p>That's why engineers like Tommy Sebastian, a senior staffer at MIT Lincoln Laboratory, are tinkering with unconventional propeller shapes. New loop-based models are designed to not only reduce noise pollution and help protect marine life but also increase energy efficiency — a win-win-win for the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/record-ocean-temperatures-california-heat-atmospheric-river-storms-santa-cruz-2023-1">oceans</a>, the climate, and the shipping industry.</p><h2><strong>Propellers that close the loop cut out some of the noise</strong></h2><div type="image" title="traditional propeller three white blades on a motor sitting on a table juxtaposed with the same setup with a propeller made of three overlapping loops" height="444" width="1191" msid="99622440" hostid="261"></div><p>When a blade propeller spins in the air (like the one on the left in the above image), it generates regions of high and low pressure that meet at the blade's tip to create a vortex.</p><p>It's these so-called tip vortices that make a lot of noise, both in the air and underwater.</p><p>When you replace the blade with a loop, there's no tip. The high- and low-pressure regions meet along the edge of the loop, distributing the vortices more widely so that they dissipate faster and therefore more quietly.</p><p>That's what Sebastian realized when he put loop propellers on a drone.</p><p>Hear how much of a difference it makes:</p><p></p><p>"I think this gives people another dimension to explore in propeller design," Sebastian said.</p><h2>Bringing the closed loop to water</h2><p>Greg Sharrow was trying to make quieter drones to film live classical music when he realized that his loopy design, which aimed to limit tip vortices, had an advantage in the water too.</p><div type="image" title="four shiny steel propellers with loops for blades lined up on a wood table with words painted on it: &quot;sharrow marine the future of propulsion&quot;" height="1499" width="1999" msid="99622442" hostid="261"></div><p>As a boat propeller spins, it creates similar high- and low-pressure regions in water as a drone propeller does in air. These pressure changes create cavities of air that form bubbles.</p><p>This process, called cavitation, is very loud — Kathy Metcalf, the president and CEO of the trade association Chamber of Shipping of America, said it accounts for most of a boat propeller's noise.</p><p>Sharrow said his loop-based boat propellers are about 20 decibels softer than traditional propellers because both tip vortices and cavitation are "eliminated or significantly reduced."</p><p></p><p>But to determine the noise reduction for ocean life, Halpern said that it's crucial to measure the frequencies, in hertz, of the propeller noise. Marine animals can hear a much wider range of frequencies than humans can.</p><p>Sharrow began selling propellers to recreational boaters in 2020 through a company he founded called Sharrow Marine.</p><p></p><p>Sharrow plans to run third-party tests to better assess the extent of his propellers' underwater noise reduction. He said he aims to publish the results in the next year.</p><h2>Loops could be more energy efficient, too</h2><p>Metcalf described cavitation as lost energy.</p><p>Testing led by the company <a href="https://boattest.com/Sharrow-Propeller" target="_blank" rel="noopener">BoatTEST</a> found that the Sharrow Propeller was up to 30% more efficient than a standard blade propeller.</p><p>Efficiency doesn't just save money — it can also help ships use less fuel and emit less heat-trapping gasses into the atmosphere.</p><div type="image" title="black oil covers a bean where a worker in white pants covered in oil walks with a shovel and bucket with a large ship in the distant water" height="1499" width="1999" msid="99622443" hostid="261"></div><p>The <a href="https://www.oecd.org/ocean/topics/ocean-shipping/">Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development has said</a> that about 90% of traded goods are transported by ocean shipping, which represents 2.9% of global greenhouse-gas emissions.</p><p>Sharrow hopes to expand into the shipping industry as his company scales up manufacturing.</p><p>"We have been actively designing propellers of 10 meters in diameter for many years and working collaboratively with shipping-container companies around the world to apply the technology for container ships," Sharrow said.</p><p>He said that Sharrow Marine produces up to 1,300 propellers a month at its facilities in Detroit and that the company had months' worth of back orders to catch up on through a supply collaboration with Yamaha. His plan is to scale up to make hundreds of thousands of propellers each year.</p><h2>The future of shipping could be much cleaner and quieter</h2><p>Though loop propellers aren't widely used for commercial shipping vessels — the main culprits of underwater noise from propellers — they could one day replace those ships' noisy screw propellers or traditional blade propellers.</p><div type="image" title="container ship labeled Evergreen across the side stacked high with green red and blue boxes in the open ocean with a coast in the distance" height="1499" width="1999" msid="99622444" hostid="261"></div><p>Quieter propellers are just one part of an impending reckoning for the shipping industry.</p><p>To reduce emissions, cargo ships have to switch to low-emission fuel sources like <a href="https://qz.com/2111985/maersk-cant-find-enough-green-fuel-for-its-carbon-neutral-ships" target="_blank" rel="noopener">green methanol</a>. That would involve redesigning new ships, retrofitting old ones, and building the coastal infrastructure to refuel them.</p><p>Nobody's requiring shipping companies to do that, so they aren't rushing to do it. But Metcalf said there's "a very quiet push" to turn sustainability guidelines from the UN's International Maritime Organization into a mandatory code or market instrument to kick-start the fuel transition.</p><p>Reducing underwater noise could go hand in hand with that transformation.</p><p>"There's a synergy there," Metcalf said. "You can improve your energy efficiency and reduce your underwater noise with the same kind of things."</p><p>Strategies with such synergy include reshaping bows and hulls, maintaining a clean hull and undamaged propellers, and adding extra structures to decrease cavitation around the propeller. Some of those options are operational, and some involve retrofitting the ship. New propellers with looped blades could help make the oceans quiet again, sparing both marine life and the climate

Sure. Do they provide a PR boost for brands? Yep. </p><p>But, these stories shouldn't be treated as feel-good, better-capitalism narratives. Instead, they expose deeply depressing gaps that the American government is failing to address. </p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Domino's</span></p><p class="caption">Domino's Paving for Pizza program debuted in 2018.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Building and maintaining roads is the responsibility of federal, state, and local governments. Yet, they often fall short; a US Department of Transportation report from early 2017 <a href="https://www.artba.org/government-affairs/policy-statements/highways-policy/">found that almost 20% of mileage on federal-aid highways in the US failed to meet the criteria for acceptable pavement</a>. According to the same report, it would cost $836 billion to bring all roads and bridges up to a state of good repair, due to the substantial backlog of work. </p><p><span>Over the past 11 years, student loans have seen 157% in culminating growth, </span><a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2018-10-17/the-student-loan-debt-crisis-is-about-to-get-worse">Bloomberg reports</a><span>. Nearly 40% of borrowers may default on their loans by 2023, according to a Brookings Institution report. Yet, t</span>he Higher Education Act, which in part sets parameters and processes related to student loans, has not been updated since 2008.</p><p>Roughly<span> </span><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/government-shutdown-federal-workers-get-zero-dollar-paycheck-furlough-backpay-2019-1">800,000 federal employees</a><span> </span>and<span> </span><a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/shutdown-is-a-hellacious-situation-for-federal-government-contractors-11547634603?mod=hp_lead_pos5">millions of government contractors</a><span> </span>are going without pay throughout the shutdown, now on day 26.<span> </span><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/government-shutdown-gofundme-pages-2019-1">More than 1,500 workers are asking for donations via GoFundMe</a><span> </span>for rent, medical bills, and even simply feeding their families. The shutdown is looking increasingly catastrophic for the American economy, with Standard &amp; Poor's<span> </span><a href="https://www.vox.com/policy-and-politics/2019/1/14/18179000/trump-wall-economic-cost-shutdown-jerome-powell?utm_campaign=vox.social&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=sprout&amp;utm_content=1547482814">saying the economic cost could soon equal</a> Trump's demand for $5.7 billion to build a wall along the US-Mexico border.</p><p><em><strong>Read more: </strong><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/government-shutdown-trump-democrats-standoff-damaging-us-economy-2019-1">The warnings are getting starker: Trump's government shutdown is becoming catastrophic for the economy</a></em></p><p>These are massive issues with core problems that will continue long after brands make donations. In the case of student loans, for example, Natty Light's $10 million donation is just 0.0000067% of the collective $1.5 trillion debt across the US. </p><p>It has long been normal for companies to donate to certain causes. And, it is natural and admirable that brands would want to address some of customers' biggest concerns.</p><p>But, these aren't feel-good stories. Domino's is filling potholes, Kraft is feeding government workers, and Natty Light is paying off student loans. This isn't heartwarming marketing - it's a depressing look at how the American government is failing.

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>REUTERS/Brendan McDermid</span></p><p class="caption">Byron Wien</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><ul class="summary-list"><li>Byron Wien is still bullish on US markets and the economy, but is well aware of the investor concerns driving ongoing volatility. </li><li>In an exclusive interview with Business Insider, the vice chairman of Blackstone's private wealth solutions group shared the areas of global markets that are concerning to him. </li><li>He presciently called the market's 10% correction this year, and now thinks stocks will have a better year in 2019.</li></ul><p>Byron Wien, the vice chairman of Blackstone's private wealth solutions group, has taken a stab at making big market predictions for the past 33 years.</p><p>His <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/2018-predictions-by-byron-wien-2018-1">2018 call</a> for US stocks has proven partially correct: The <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/index/s&amp;p_500" target="_blank" rel="noopener">S&amp;P 500</a> has undergone not one, but two 10% corrections - unheard of throughout last year. But to perfectly fulfill the second half of Wien's call, the index needs to finish the year above 3,000. </p><p>It came within 60 points in September, and Wien thought he would be able to tick off this item on his list of 10 surprises.</p><p>"Suddenly the mood shifted because people began to be concerned that world growth was slowing," Wien said in a phone interview. He's still bullish on stocks and the US economy, but is clear-headed about the issues that are roiling markets and how they could be sources of volatility moving forward. </p><p>His biggest concern is none other than the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/stock-market-crash-fed-interest-rates-in-weak-position-to-avoid-2018-11" target="_blank" rel="noopener">withdrawal of liquidity</a> by the world's largest central banks as they reduce the sizes of their balance sheets. </p><p>The combined assets held by the Federal Reserve, Bank of Japan, and European Central Bank surged from about $3 trillion in 2007 to a peak of more than $15 trillion this year. The banks are withdrawing from their crisis-era involvement in fixed-income markets that helped to create demand and prop up prices.  </p><p>"Monetary policy has definitely swing around, and that's not favorable," Wien said.</p><p><em><strong>Read more:</strong> <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/stock-market-crash-fed-interest-rates-in-weak-position-to-avoid-2018-11">The stock market looks like it's past the point of no return - and not even the Fed can save it from the next downturn</a></em></p><p>Wien says this development on its own is not enough to end the bull market just yet. However, it does remove what has been one of the most important drivers of stocks in this <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/stock-bull-market-longest-on-record-4-main-reasons-for-longevity-2018-8">bull market</a>. Moving forward, stocks will be lifted only by earnings, not central-bank liquidity or price-to-earnings ratios, Wien said. </p><p>Wien is also worried that the Fed and other policymakers do not have the complete toolkit to deal with the next recession.</p><p>On the fiscal-policy side, tax cuts and more government spending have put the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-budget-deficit-1-trillion-2019-cbo-report-2018-4">budget deficit</a> on pace to hit an estimated $1 trillion in 2019. And from a monetary-policy perspective, Wien said the Fed did not allow rates to rise enough so that lowering them would have a stimulative effect on the economy.</p><p>China could further complicate the Fed's actions, according to Wien.</p><p>"A drop of growth in China below 6% would cause the Fed to do more tightening than I suggest," he said. In turn, that could lift short-term bond yields above their longer-term counterparts - the dreaded yield curve inversion that has preceded every recession since the 1960s.</p><p>Wien is also concerned that the trade war could weigh on earnings growth at a time when there's concern about a peak.</p><p>On the plus side, he is optimistic that consumer spending will continue to keep the economy afloat as business investment weakens.</p><p>"I think stocks are poised to do better in 2019, Wien said. Investing legend Byron Wien breaks down his biggest concerns in markets right now - and explains why it will be tough to climb out of the next recession

He announced he would leave the company in January.</li></ul><p>CBS is surveying its employees about workplace culture and rolling out new programs to deal with workplace harassment in the wake of accusations against former CBS host Charlie Rose and former CBS CEO Leslie Moonves.</p><p>Employees received an anonymous survey to provide "frank and honest" feedback on their experiences to build a "stronger CBS."</p><p>"We want to be clear CBS has turned a page on its approach to these issues, and although this work will take time, it is worth it to be comprehensive and get input from all of you," read an email to all CBS employees.</p><p>The broadcaster also said it would unveil new programs to improve workplace culture in the coming months. The programs have been promised to employees since September and include efforts to increase transparency, solutions to ensure open communication, improve trainings, and processes for reporting and taking action. </p><p>The survey comes as lawyers hired by CBS recently concluded an investigation into sexual misconduct claims against Moonves and broader workplace culture issues at the company. <span>Moonves left the company in September after a dozen women told The New Yorker that Moonves sexually assaulted or harassed them and that their careers suffered as a result.</span></p><p><span>The lawyers' investigation concluded that "the board would have multiple bases upon which to conclude that the company was entitled to terminate Moonves for cause," <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2018/12/04/business/media/les-moonves-cbs-report.html?module=inline" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according to a draft of the report viewed by The New York Times.</a> The fate of Moonves' $120 million severance package remains uncertain. The board is reviewing the report to decide if Moonves will receive the payout, according to the Times.</span></p><p><span>And CBS News recently <a href="https://iapps.courts.state.ny.us/fbem/DocumentDisplayServlet?documentId=K0y2eCKhORvwsuEcuwyWsg==&amp;system=prod" target="_blank" rel="noopener">settled a lawsuit</a> with three women who accused former CBS anchor Charlie Rose of "blatant and repeated sexual harassment."</span></p><p>The email also follows the news that Ryan Kadro, executive producer of CBS This Morning, would leave the company in January. Kadro, who has been at CBS since 2010, was named in the suit against Rose, which was <a href="https://iapps.courts.state.ny.us/fbem/DocumentDisplayServlet?documentId=K0y2eCKhORvwsuEcuwyWsg==&amp;system=prod" target="_blank" rel="noopener">settled a week ago</a>. Kadro said in an email to staff that his departure was related to a desire to try something new.</p><p>"<span>I couldn't shake the feeling in my gut that I need a new challenge (and a serious nap.) It's the natural course of things," Kadro wrote.</span></p><p><span>The women who sued CBS - Katherine Brooks Harris, Sydney McNeal, and Chelsea Wei - worked at CBS between 2016 and 2018 and <a href="https://iapps.courts.state.ny.us/fbem/DocumentDisplayServlet?documentId=KgU5xqll2QOtWXAE_PLUS_sO3Vg==&amp;system=prod">claimed in the suit that</a> Rose harassed them, "including unwanted physical touching, including without limitation caressing and touching their arms, shoulders, waist and back, pulling them close to his body, and kissing them on the cheek."</span></p><p>The suit also <a href="https://iapps.courts.state.ny.us/fbem/DocumentDisplayServlet?documentId=KgU5xqll2QOtWXAE_PLUS_sO3Vg==&amp;system=prod">claimed</a> Kadro "knew that Mr. Rose had a history of sexual harassment" and that Wei "<span>told Mr. Kadro words to the effect of, 'I'm telling you in case you have a lawsuit on your hands.'"
