I’m not a city guy. Growing up in the suburbs, some memories still stick. Baba’s office senior bought a swanky penthouse in the city. Cut to the housewarming party. The company MD arrives. Everybody stands up. I hear a ring. The MD takes out a black alien device. I remember reading the words ‘<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Blackberry">Blackberry</a>’. That’s the enduring image most 90s kids have – their rich dads, or richer neighborhood uncles using a device that doubled up as a weapon if you’re cornered in an alley.<br />

<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Blackberry">Blackberry</a>, you were the voluptuous diva of the 90s. A symbolic, if possible polite middle finger to announce one has arrived. The coolest features were ‘email’ and ‘camera’. Then the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=iPhone">iPhone</a> boomed, smartphones, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Android">Android</a>, and cut to now. The world went and got itself into a goddamn hurry.<br />

Your bullishness to have an enterprise focused OS proved fatal. When most brands jumped on the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Android">Android</a> bandwagon, you took your time. Today, the then leader Nokia’s dead, and it’s too late for you too. While you’ve pledged to keep the Priv secure, nobody cares while <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Apple">Apple</a>’s around.<br />

I repeat, there’s nothing wrong with you baby. You just ain’t the ‘cool crowd' anymore. Your forte, the QWERTY keypad is now a double-edged sword. It’s what makes the Priv special, and also a deal-breaker.<br />

The Priv is attractive (a bit fat though) and has a 5.4-inch quad HD display with Gorilla Glass 4. The display’s sharp, and the colors vibrant. The 18-megapixel Schneider-Kreuznach camera is fine, even though the 2-megapixel selfie camera sucks.<br />

Hardware isn't top class, but won't disappoint either. It’s a 64-bit Snapdragon 808 hexa-core system-on-chip (SoC). It handles hardware-intensive games and multi-tasking well, though the device will get a bit hot. The Priv's 3,410mAh battery may not be better than the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Samsung+Galaxy+Note+5">Samsung Galaxy Note 5</a> or <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Samsung+Galaxy+S6">Samsung Galaxy S6</a>, but we’ll let that pass too.<br />

In the age of vulgar specifications, ‘fine’ isn’t just fine anymore. You just ain’t got the booty to attract eyeballs. Every design is done to death, what ‘new’ could you possibly bring to the table. <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=LeEco">LeEco</a> sells metal body for Rs. 10,999, and fingerprint sensor wielding <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Coolpad">Coolpad</a> Note 3 Lite comes as cheap as Rs. 6,999. Also, these despos (slang for desperate individuals) are slashing prices left, right and center to get my attention. They make me feel special. At Rs. 62,000 you’re not a part of that rat race either darling. Why even try!<br />

Maybe it’s the same retired business honcho who’s been cribbing about typing on glass. But how many folks like that will you fish out! <p><strong><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Edoardo Maggio/Business Insider</span></p><p class="caption">The BlackBerry Motion.</p></div><p></p></div></div></strong></p><ul><li><strong>The BlackBerry Motion is the latest device from TCL, the Chinese electronics giant that creates the products and then uses BlackBerry's brand to market them.</strong></li><li><strong>BlackBerry phones have historically had a hardware keyboard, which has remained a constant even in the era of all-touchscreen smartphones; recent BlackBerry phones included the Priv and the KeyONE.</strong></li><li><strong>The BlackBerry Motion is a great device for business people with productivity in mind, but just an okay phone for everyone else.</strong></li></ul><p><br />BlackBerry isn't a top player in the smartphone landscape anymore, and it hasn't been for quite some time.</p><p>However, unlike Nokia, it hasn't completely disappeared; it just maintained a retrenched, low-key profile, and kept making devices that some people chose either for security reasons, their need for a productivity-oriented device, the presence of a physical keyboard, or a combination of the above.</p><p>However, the most recent BlackBerry Motion rejects that, at least in part, as this is the company's first high-end Android device that doesn't feature a hardware keyboard at all. (It's not even hidden as it was in the Priv).</p><p>It's a phone that tries to earn its place in 2017's increasingly crowded sea of devices, focusing on what BlackBerry does best and improving features such as battery life and software customisability instead of trying to offer top-notch performance or gorgeous-looking, borderless displays.</p><p>Making the Motion a full-touchscreen device is a way of streamlining the product along the lines of virtually any other smartphone, but this is not a phone that wants to compete with the iPhones, Pixels, and Galaxys of the world. It still wants to be a BlackBerry, front and center - and if anyone knows that that's what they are going to find, chances are they will be happy with their purchase.</p><h2>Nailing down the basics that matter (to BlackBerry users)...</h2><p>The BlackBerry Motion is a no-frills handset that gets most of the basics just right, but overwhelmingly focuses on productivity and features that might be of interest to a business user, or a busy person in general.</p><p>I can say that just by pinpointing its absolute best feature: An astonishingly big, tablet-size battery (4000mAh), which was basically impossible for me to kill in one day.</p><p>An iPhone X or last year's Pixel XL, by comparison, always required to be topped up by the time I went to bed, unless I wanted my phone to die on me some time during the morning after.</p><p>Battery life on the Motion is so good that I simply forgot about it; and this is especially useful for those who plan to use the device extensively, travel, write loads of documents and the likes. The Motion is the kind of device you'd want to use for a lot of time; or at least feel comfortable doing so.</p><p>The other good things this phone has to offer are in certain details: The excellent keyboard with its smart predictions, the widgets incorporated into icons via a simple, nifty swipe, the numerous quick accesses to functions inside the calendar, email, and notes apps, and even outstanding call quality (the voice from the other end is almost unexpectedly clear and rich).</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Edoardo Maggio/Business Insider</span></p><p class="caption">The BlackBerry Motion's back has a carbon fiber-like texture, but it's actually made of plastic.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>There is also a smart "convenience key" button, which lets you remap it to a number of customisable options for immediate, one-click access. I found it useful to take screenshots to quickly crop or scribble on, but the button's placement is terrible, as it sits right below the sleep/wake button and even after a week of use I kept confusing them.</p><p>Even worse is the fact that the convenience key has a special texture on it, which is usually reserved to distinguish the power button from the volume rocker, and that didn't help my muscle memory to adapt.</p><p>BlackBerry's universal search is also fantastic, as it scans through every angle of the phone to look for what you're trying to find; and I also love the idea of its centralised hub, where BlackBerry manages to keep everything organised in one place: Email, text messages, phone calls, calendar events, and even tweets are all under one roof.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Edoardo Maggio/Business Insider</span></p><p class="caption">The BlackBerry Hub (right) pulls information from a variety of sources, and puts them all under one unified roof. The advanced search feature (right), on the other hand, scans all of the information your phone has to find what you're looking for, and also offers to extend the search outside of locally stored data.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>And not just that: You have features such as rich text formatting, snoozing of notifications, and even a nice "conversation view" to display multiple messages more clearly, all inside the BlackBerry Hub.</p><p>The software overall has a somewhat steep learning curve because of its profound flexibility and customisation options, but this also brings an unmatched level of solidity for users that do master it. It's powerful, useful for the kind of users it aims to serve, and can indeed be smart, helpful, and rewarding.</p><p>As far as productivity goes, the BlackBerry Motion gets very little wrong.</p><h2>...but failing to meaningfully please anyone else</h2><p>The Motion clearly aims at this one particular audience: Those who need to have some sort of work computer inside their pocket. Or, well, current BlackBerry users, if you will. And, in my experience, the Motion's software is built to serve them well. But if I had to purchase the BlackBerry Motion for anything outside of that, its various shortcomings would inevitably make me look elsewhere.</p><p>Starting from its design, the BlackBerry Motion is as generic a phone as you can possibly get.</p><p>There's nothing exciting about it: It looks like yet another black slab with some metal here and there, and even its carbon fiber-like back doesn't impress, as it fails the in-hands feel test beyond the plastic it's actually made of.</p><p>The one good thing is that, at least, the phone is rated IP67 for water and dust resistance, so it should be more durable than average, but that's a kind of design element you can only appreciate in specific situations, not day-to-day use.</p><p>The bezels are just outright enormous, too; alongside the boxy shape, they contribute to make the phone feel gigantic, especially on the chin, where the home button and capacitive keys reside.</p><p>The button itself hides a fingerprint reader, but it is, annoyingly, a little too wonky, especially compared to the stiffer keys on the sides.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Edoardo Maggio/Business Insider</span></p><p class="caption">The phone's front has a huge chin that makes the phone way bigger than it should, while the sharp aluminum sides don't help with ergonomics.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>The capacitive keys are terrible as well; more often than not a slightly dirty, wet, or sweaty thumb wouldn't be recognised, and even when it did the vibration is weak and unpleasant. The front's coating is also particularly bothersome, as for some reason cleaning the screen was harder than usual, in my experience.</p><p>The 5.5-inch, 1080p display itself is fine, with good viewing angles and okay colors, but it falls a little flat when compared to anything higher-end smartphones offer - when using it side by side with an iPhone 8 Plus (which has the same size, resolution, and display technology), it's just unfair how much better Apple's smartphone is.</p><p>The camera is also acceptable at best; perfectly lit conditions will produce good results, but in most situations the Motion's rear sensor struggles to get past anything a high-end smartphone camera from two years ago would've handled just fine, with low-light being the predictably sorest spot.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Edoardo Maggio/Business Insider</span></p><p class="caption">As the light starts to go out, the BlackBerry Motion begins to struggle, particularly with detail, although the HDR algorithms do a generally good job. Photos are fine for social media and messaging, but nothing you would want to print out.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Photos aren't bad, but the camera is far from the Motion's strongest asset. The best feature it has is probably the built-in scanner, which ties in with its productivity-oriented software.</p><p>The front-facing selfie shooter, on the other hand, does its job well, and the camera also offers slow-motion videos, up to 4K resolution at 30fps (frames-per-second).</p><p>Performance is also nothing to cheer for - the Snapdragon 625 processor handles BlackBerry's software without lag or hiccups, and the phone never froze or rebooted in my testing, but the Motion never feels like it's running the otherwise stock Android 7.1.2 like a true champ either.</p><p>In short: There's nothing necessarily bad about the BlackBerry Motion, whose overall experience outside hardcore productivity is okay - but so many other phones do the vast majority of things better, and, even if they're more expensive, still offer more value for their money.</p><h2>This is the perfect phone for former BlackBerry users tired of dealing with a physical keyboard</h2><p>The BlackBerry Motion is not a phone for everyone, and it's not even a good choice if your budget is the £399 TCL - The Chinese company behind the newer BlackBerry-branded devices - asks for.</p><p>The BlackBerry Motion's strengths all lie within its insanely good battery life, as well as the numerous little software tweaks that make productivity task-completing much more powerful than on an average smartphone, and usefully customisable to one's preferences.</p><p>If you were happy with the company's previous devices, like the KeyONE, chances are you'll like the Motion, too, so long as you don't have a problem with a pane of glass taking the place of BlackBerry's marquee physical keyboard.</p><p>For all other users, just £50 more can get a OnePlus 5T in your hands, and you can rest assured that the overall experience will be much, much better.</p>    <div class="margin-top">        <h3>NOW WATCH: <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/area-51-american-conspiracy-theories-aliens-history-animation-video-2017-7">How Area 51 became the center of alien conspiracy theories</a></h3>        <div>                    </div>    </div>

BlackBerry's latest smartphone will satisfy workaholics and BlackBerry fans, but no one else

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image"><p class="source"><span>Antonio Villas-Boas/Tech Insider</span></p><p class="caption">The BlackBerry Priv has a 5.4-inch display.</p></div><p></p></div></div>BlackBerry has a <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/blackberry-priv-review-2015-11">new phone out</a>: It's a $700 (£579.99) Android phone called the Priv which, <a href="http://www.theverge.com/2015/11/6/9678718/blackberry-priv-impressions-android-new-slider-phone">according to the company</a>, stands for both "privacy" and "privilege." </p><p>Combining the form factor of a BlackBerry - right down to the QWERTY keyboard - with Android is an as-yet untested combination, and one that the company hopes will re-instate it as a player in the market. </p><p>Unfortunately, it's unlikely that this will be the case. </p><p>"My opinion is that it won't make any difference [to the overall business]," said Francisco Jeronimo, an analyst for IDC. "It's already too late." The company's handset market share, according to IDC data, sits at 0.3% with sales of under one million units during Q3 2015. "Had [the Priv] been launched 3-4 years ago it would've made a difference," says Jeronimo. </p><p>"It's just too late," says Roberta Cozza, a researcher for Gartner. "BlackBerry can survive as a wireless service and enterprise solution-type of company, but I think eventually, yes, they need to look at what they want to do with the hardware." </p><p>It hasn't always been this way, however. BlackBerry was, for a time, the pioneer of the smartphone world with sales that <a href="http://www.statista.com/statistics/263439/global-market-share-held-by-rim-smartphones/">would rival Apple</a> in terms of market and an enterprise client list that included <a href="http://www.zdnet.com/article/rim-touts-enterprise-apps-for-blackberry-10/">everyone who was anyone</a>. The handset features a 5.4-inch 1440 x 2560 pixel display, with a powerful processor, plenty of RAM, and an 18 megapixel camera. The software - Android 5.1.1 - has been <a href="http://www.cnet.com/news/android-interface-guide/">"skinned" by BlackBerry</a> but remains true to much of what makes Google's operating system appealing, including the Play Store. </p><p>Launching a $700 phone - the highest-end price segment of the market - to combat poor sales is a bad move, both with enterprise and consumer customers, <span>according to analysts</span>. There are still niche enterprise clients - such as banks or parts of government - that rely on BlackBerry's security features, but their <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BlackBerry#Usage">numbers are few</a>. "We are talking about extremely sensitive data and information," says Jeronimo. "We are talking about very specific companies or governments and they really need to make sure the security is the best they can find. Those kind of companies will probably consider this device but the majority will not." </p><p>The majority of consumers will, according to both Jeronimo and Cozza, buy an iPhone while enterprise clients are warming to Microsoft's offerings, which include support for both Windows 10 and Office. </p><p>The future of BlackBerry's hardware unit is very bleak. Revenue fell to $490 million (£324 million) in the <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/2015/09/25/us-blackberry-results-idUSKCN0RP13G20150925">third quarter of 2015</a>, well below analysts' estimates of $610 million (£400 million), and the Priv is unlikely to turn this negative trend around. "The brand was damaged so much in the last couple of years and most users don't want to hold a BlackBerry device and if they do they try to hide it in their bags," says Jeronimo. </p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image"><p class="source"><span>AP</span></p><p class="caption">BlackBerry is facing an existential crisis.</p></div><p></p></div></div>One of the options available to BlackBerry is to focus on other areas, such as security, where the company's offerings are still strong. The <a href="http://www.forbes.com/sites/greatspeculations/2015/09/08/blackberrys-good-technology-acquisition-is-smart-does-it-impact-its-valuation/">$425 million (£280 million) acquisition</a> of Good Technology, a rival in the enterprise mobile management space, highlights this focus, diversifying away from hardware. </p><p>"If they don't manage to reverse the current sales trend then it will be definitely be the end of the handset business," says Jeronimo. "The company itself can still succeed in the enterprise space [as it has a] very strong software and services business. Analysts: BlackBerry's handset business is doomed

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;"><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>A recent listing on BlackBerry's website appears to have leaked the company's latest Android handset. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;"><a href="http://crackberry.com/blackberry-argon-likely-be-released-dtek60">As spotted by CrackBerry</a>, </span>a since-removed page - with the extension "<a href="http://us.blackberry.com/smartphones/dtek50-by-blackberry/specifications-a-donotpublish.html">donotpublish.html</a>," no less - temporarily detailed a new "DTEK60" smartphone.</p><p>Given that BlackBerry launched an Android phone called the DTEK50 earlier this year, this would seem to be a natural follow-up.&#xa0;</p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Unlike that </span><span style="font-weight: 400;"><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/blackberry-dtek-50-review-2016-8">decidedly so-so device</a>, </span>though, the DTEK60 appears to be a much higher-end device. BlackBerry's page tipped the phone to feature a big and sharp 5.5-inch, 2560x1440 display, a generous Snapdragon 820 chip with 4GB of RAM, 32GB of storage, and a 3,000mAh battery.</p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Beyond that, we're looking at a 21-megapixel main camera, a fingerprint sensor (something the DTEK50 lacked), a programmable side key (something the DTEK50 included), and a USB Type-C port.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Though no pictures of the phone were leaked, one thing that </span><em><span style="font-weight: 400;">wasn't </span></em>mentioned was a QWERTY keyboard, as we've seen on past BlackBerry phones <span style="font-weight: 400;"><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/blackberry-priv-review-2015-11">like the Priv</a>. </span>It's also not clear if the device will simply rebadge another company's reference design, <span style="font-weight: 400;"><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/blackberry-dtek-50-announced-specs-photos-2016-7">as the DTEK50 did</a> </span><span style="font-weight: 400;">to Alcatel's Idol 4 phone.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;"><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><a href="http://www.gsmarena.com/new_leak_suggests_blackberry_argon_will_be_launched_as_dtek60_-news-20605.php" target="_blank"></a><p class="source"><span>BlackBerry/GSMArena</span></p><p class="caption">A screenshot of the now-deleted DTEK60 specs document on BlackBerry's website, as spotted by GSMArena.</p></div><p></p></div></div>Regardless, all of this lines up with previous rumors. Noted phone leaker Evan Blass </span><a href="http://venturebeat.com/2016/06/30/blackberry-is-working-on-3-new-android-phones-codenamed-neon-argon-and-mercury/"><span style="font-weight: 400;">reported in June</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> that BlackBerry had three phones on the way, codenamed Neon, Argon, and Mercury. Neon turned out to be the DTEK50, while Mercury is said to bring back the physical keyboard early next year. So, this would be Argon.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">In any case, a new BlackBerry phone would have to face the same hurdles the company has struggled to overcome for the past several years. Though the company has embraced Android, it's still mostly reliant on the name recognition generated by its former mobile dominance. It's unlikely that a high-end, probably expensive phone like this would do much to turn that around, but it looks like it could be enticing for those still on the BlackBerry train (looking at you, Kim Kardashian West).</span></p>

It looks like a powerful new BlackBerry phone is on the way

Its operating system is dead. Its apps are unbundled. Physical keyboards are a relic. People don't talk about it anymore.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">This, I imagine, is how you end up naming a phone the DTEK50 - you see the writing on the wall. And indeed, the Waterloo, Ontario company's latest handset feels like it's coming from a company that's been stripped for parts. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">This isn't a moonshot like </span><a href="http://www.techinsider.io/blackberry-priv-review-2015-11" target="_blank"><span style="font-weight: 400;">the Priv</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">; it's an inoffensive and altogether safe stab at a certain sect of privacy-conscious users, most of whom would already consider BlackBerry in the first place.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">At $300, though, it's also affordable. That opens it up to a much larger potential audience than the $700 Priv ever could. After using DTEK50 for the past week, though, I can't really see it gaining much traction outside of the BlackBerry niche. Here's what I mean.</span></p>

REVIEW: The new BlackBerry phone is safe in every sense of the word

<p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>TCL thinks it can bring BlackBerry back from the dead.<p>The Chinese manufacturer, best known in the US for its affordable TVs and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/alcatel-idol-4s-review-best-budget-smartphones-2016-7" target="_blank">Alcatel-branded</a> smartphones, on Wednesday unveiled the first BlackBerry phone it'll release since formally <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/r-blackberry-says-chinas-tcl-to-make-blackberry-branded-devices-2016-12" target="_blank">acquiring the rights</a> to the once-leading mobile brand in December.</p><p>It's a bit of an odd announcement: TCL isn't disclosing the actual name of the phone yet, nor is it confirming its specs, price point, or release date. The company says those details will come closer to the Mobile World Congress show in Barcelona next month.</p><p>Instead, it's giving media at CES 2017 in Las Vegas a peek at an alpha version of the phone, albeit one with finished hardware, to get in front of the <a href="http://venturebeat.com/2016/06/30/blackberry-is-working-on-3-new-android-phones-codenamed-neon-argon-and-mercury/" target="_blank">handful of leaks</a> that have popped up in recent months.</p><p>Those <a href="http://www.androidcentral.com/alcatel-maker-teases-new-hardware-keyboard-blackberry-ces-launch" target="_blank">leaks</a> pointed to a phone, codenamed "Mercury," with the kind of QWERTY keyboard that BlackBerry was known for before its well-documented <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/blackberry-phone-sales-decline-chart-2016-9" target="_blank">fall from grace</a>, and it turns out they were correct. The keyboard spreads out across the width of the phone, but, as with&#xa0;the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/blackberry-priv-review-2015-11" target="_blank">competent</a> but <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/blackberry-stops-making-own-phones-quarterly-results-q2-2017-2016-9" target="_blank">ill-fated</a> Priv before it, the keyboard feels jarring in a world where touchscreens have long become the norm.</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>At first blush, it's good for what it is: The keys are clicky and responsive, the necessary characters are there (though having no dedicated period key is a pain), there's a fingerprint reader built into the space bar, and there's still some level of touch support, so you can, say, swipe across the keyboard to move your cursor onscreen.<p>The question is whether or not a good phone keyboard is something worth pursuing in the first place. The fact that BlackBerry's <a href="https://www.statista.com/statistics/263439/global-market-share-held-by-rim-smartphones/" target="_blank">global market share</a> fell from 20% to 0.1% while all-touch phones grew dominant over the past decade, leading the company to get out of hardware entirely, would suggest not.</p><p>But TCL's North American boss Steve Cistulli says there's still "strong enough" demand for the more tactile feel of a physical keyboard, particularly among enterprise customers. Though earlier rumors suggested that BlackBerry had this new phone in the works months before TCL took over its hardware, Cistulli says the company thinks of QWERTY phones as one part of its BlackBerry suite of devices, and that it'll keep the keyboard around "as long as the market demands it." In other words, this might not be a one-off.</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>The keyboard is the defining feature here, but the rest of the hardware felt perfectly fine during my brief demo. It's a handsome phone, all black and silver, with smoothly rounded sides and a grippy, rubberized texture on its back. Unlike the previous <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/blackberry-dtek-50-review-2016-8" target="_blank">DTEK50</a> and DTEK60 - the two most recent BlackBerry phones, which TCL manufactured for BlackBerry before acquiring its rights entirely - it doesn't feel like an ordinary Android phone with a BlackBerry logo slapped on; it's got the aesthetic down.<p>Beyond that, there's a USB-C port on its bottom, a shutter button on its side, and a big, round camera with a slight bump on its back. The 4.6-inch display looks just fine. The whole thing is on the thicker side, but it doesn't come off as cheap or unwieldy - just a little odd.</p><p>BlackBerry itself is still behind the phone's software, and it appears to be very similar to what was available on the Priv and DTEK phones. Namely, there's a clean-looking version of Android 7.0, just peppered with various BlackBerry-made apps that you'll probably find redundant.</p><p>The bigger deal is security - the enterprise market remains slightly more receptive to BlackBerry than the consumer one, so the company still puts a focus on encryption, more palatable privacy checks, and other protective measures. TCL did not immediately respond to a request for comment on if the new phone will apply Google's monthly security updates for Android, but it's been faster than most in that area before.</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>TCL's end goal is to push from what Cistulli calls its current "tier two" status into the "tier one" sphere occupied by Samsung, Apple, and, to a lesser extent, Huawei. The plan is to take its gains with Alcatel, which largely gets by on selling affordable Android phones, and beef that up with a legacy brand in BlackBerry, which they can pitch to their existing carrier and <keyword id="6354851" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Retail">retail</keyword> partners as another way in with the enterprise and people who generally want something different. Cistulli says TCL will put more marketing and sales resources behind BlackBerry to help - though he didn't say how far that'll go - and that he thinks it'll make "visible" sales gains by 2018.<p>Now, there are plenty of reasons to doubt that'll happen. Even if it has grown in recent years, Alcatel isn't exactly a household name on every carrier's store shelves (no Verizon, for one), and BlackBerry's departure from relevance has been long and deliberate. Either way, market share <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/apple-94-percent-smartphone-industry-profits-canaccord-genuity-2015-11" target="_blank">hasn't translated to lots of profit</a> for Android manufacturers.</p><p>Whatever the case, whether or not this new BlackBerry phone is worth buying will come down to what's inside of it and how much it costs. There's a new BlackBerry phone, and it's bringing the old-school keyboard back

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Thomson Reuters</span></p><p class="caption">Man is silhouetted against a video screen with Blackberry logo as he pose with Blackberry Q10 in this photo illustration taken in the central Bosnian town of Zenica</p></div><p></p></div></div>BlackBerry shares fell as much as 7% ahead of the market open on Friday morning after the company reported weak quarterly earnings.</p><p>The smartphone maker reported a second-quarter adjusted loss of 13 cents per share on revenues of $490 million, down 46.5% compared to a year ago.</p><p>Analysts had expected a loss of 9 cents and revenues of $605.3 million, according to Bloomberg.</p><p>BlackBerry is in the midst of a turnaround to boost the revenues from its software division. Once all the rage, BlackBerry smartphones and the company's market share was eaten away by rivals.</p><p>In the earnings <a href="http://finance.yahoo.com/news/blackberry-reports-fiscal-2016-second-110000511.html">statement</a>, CEO John Chen said, <span>"I am confident in our strategy and continued progress, highlighted by our fourth consecutive quarter of year-over-year double digit growth in software licensing revenue and sixth consecutive quarter of positive free cash flow."</span></p><p>The company also confirmed that it will <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/blackberry-venice-android-phone-photos-leak-2015-9">launch a phone</a> that runs on Android.</p><p><span>"At the same time, we are focused on making faster progress to achieve profitability in our handset business," Chen said. BlackBerry posted a quarterly loss and its stock is getting smoked

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Matt Weinberger/Business Insider</span></p><p class="caption">John Chen, CEO of BlackBerry, at CES 2016.</p></div><p></p></div></div>At CES 2016, BlackBerry CEO John Chen discussed why the company has no plans to get out of the smartphone market, despite <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/blackberry-cuts-jobs-2015-5">job cuts</a> and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/blackberry-is-doomed-2015-11">pressure from analysts</a> and investors. </p><p>"I personally believe we can actually make money on devices, and I think we're close," Chen says. </p><p>With the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/blackberry-priv-review-2015-11">BlackBerry Priv</a>, the company's newest flagship phone and its first running Android, Chen says, it's solved its biggest problem - the lack of good apps for its in-house BlackBerry OS - while still offering proprietary enhanced <keyword id="6356323" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Enterprise">enterprise</keyword> features and privacy. </p><p>The combination of familiar Android and secure BlackBerry means that with the Priv, the firm has expanded its appeal beyond just the enterprise buyer, to the "professional consumer," says Chen. </p><p><span class="s1">"Things are starting to work," Chen says. </span><span class="s1">"We are generating cash."</span></p><p>Today, BlackBerry announced that the Priv is coming to Verizon and T-Mobile in the United States, joining AT&amp;T. </p><p>And the company is still investing heavily in building out the BlackBerry's enterprise appeal, Chen says. He highlighted BlackBerry's recent acquisition of email security company <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/employees-upset-at-good-technology-sale-to-blackberry-2015-12">Good Technology</a> as a case in point.</p><p><span class="s1"></span><span class="s1">To accelerate that push, Chen also announced a partnership between BlackBerry and Sharecare, a startup founded by Dr. Mehmet Oz, that helps doctors securely access and share medical records. In mid-2015, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/blackberry-hasnt-given-up-on-smartphones-yet-2015-5">Chen told Business Insider</a> that there were 50,000 cars in the world running QNX. </span></p><p><span class="s1">At CES 2016, BlackBerry is announcing new capabilities for auto manufacturers to build self-driving car software on the QNX operating system. It's also announcing capabilities for audio software to manage in-car acoustics. </span></p><p><span class="s1">Still, even with these grand plans, Chen acknowledges that market confidence in BlackBerry is waning, and that the clock is ticking for a real turnaround.</span></p><p>"We wish we could do it faster, obviously. BlackBerry CEO: 'I think we're close' to making money on phones

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;"><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>BlackBerry on Tuesday introduced the </span><a href="http://shop.blackberry.com/store/bbrryus/en_US/pd/productID.4104430300/categoryID.3836869100"><span style="font-weight: 400;">DTEK50</span></a>, which it claims to be "the world's most secure Android smartphone."</p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">It's the Waterloo-based company's first follow-up to last year's </span><a href="http://www.techinsider.io/blackberry-priv-review-2015-11"><span style="font-weight: 400;">BlackBerry Priv</span></a>, and further solidifies its shift toward embracing Google's mobile OS.</p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Unlike that $700 phone, though, the DTEK50 is relatively affordable. It also doesn't come with one of BlackBerry's signature physical keyboards.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Let's take a closer look at what the once-dominant phone maker has on the way.</span></p>

Blackberry is back with 'the world's most secure Android smartphone' - here's what it can do

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image"><p class="source"><span>Aaron Harris / Reuters</span></p><p class="caption">BlackBerry CEO John Chen using the Passport, a giant square handset released in 2014.</p></div><p></p></div></div>BlackBerry is looking to use acquisitions to bolster its software efforts, with the aim of generating $500 million (£330 million) by next March, <a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2015-11-06/blackberry-ceo-plans-more-acquisitions-as-handset-sales-struggle">CEO John Chen told Bloomberg</a>. </p><p>BlackBerry made $137 million (£90 million) in software revenue in the quarter ending June, <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/2015/06/23/us-blackberry-results-idUSKBN0P317W20150623">according to Reuters</a>, an increase of over 150%. Building out this revenue stream is key for the company.</p><p>The move to being a software company comes after BlackBerry sold <a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-34741778">just 800,000 phones</a> during Q3 2015, capturing less than 0.3% of the global market. Revenues fell to $490 million (£324 million), well below analysts' estimates of $610 million (£404 million), as the company struggles to find its niche outside of making enterprise phones. </p><p>"We are still a $3 billion company and have over $3 billion in cash," said Chen. "We are pouring most of that into research and development." </p><p>BlackBerry <a href="http://www.forbes.com/sites/greatspeculations/2015/09/08/blackberrys-good-technology-acquisition-is-smart-does-it-impact-its-valuation/">spent $425 million (£280 million)</a> on Good Technology, a company that lets employees use their personal phones at work, and has, according to Chen, made five more acquisitions in the last 20 months. </p><p>The company recently <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/blackberry-priv-review-2015-11">unveiled the Priv</a>, a $700 (£579) Android phone designed for enterprise users and Chen did acknowledge the buzz that launching a new phone brought, but argued the company's long-term future lies elsewhere. "If we don't get a good hardware business going, we will more consider the software side," he said. </p><p>The consensus among analysts is that <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/blackberry-is-doomed-2015-11">BlackBerry's hardware ambitions are dead</a>. The Priv is technically impressive but the $700 price point makes it inaccessible to the majority of users and, most importantly, businesses. Some organisations, such as banks, will still use BlackBerry handsets but "the majority will not," said Francisco Jeronimo, an analyst for IDC. </p><p>BlackBerry faces increased competition from Microsoft, thanks to Windows Phone's integration with Office and Windows 10, and this has adversely affected sales. Windows 10 Mobile was recently found to be the most secure smartphone operating system, <a href="http://wmpoweruser.com/hacker-claims-windows-phone-the-most-secure-smartphone-os/">according to a hacker</a>. </p><p>The thought of going toe-to-toe with Microsoft is likely unappealing to BlackBerry as the company is <a href="http://www.wolframalpha.com/input/?i=MSFT+vs+BBRY">roughly 109 times smaller</a>, with a market value of $4 billion (£2.6 billion) compared to $438 billion (£290 billion).
