Mohammed Faizal P.P of NCP is leading against Congress's Muhammed Hamdulla Sayeed. At 3pm, the difference between their votes was around 1,000. Lakshadweep is located off the coast of Kerala in the Arabian sea and the coral Island is the smallest single constituency in the democracy of India in terms of the number of voters. The union territory went for polling on April 11, 2019 during the first phase of elections. The single parliamentary constituency of Lakshadweep is reserved for the candidates from the Scheduled Tribes. For so long, Lakshadweep has been a strong Congress bastion. However, during 2014 general elections, Mohammed Faizal PP of the Nationalist Congress party won from here and became a Lok Sabha MP. He defeated the Congress candidate Muhammed Hamdulla Sayeed, the son of veteran Congress leader PM Sayeed during 2014 general elections. Hadmulla had earlier won the seat in 2009. The first MP from the union territory was the Congress candidate K Nalla Koya Thangal. He was directly appointed by the President. Thangal held the seat for two terms during the period 1957 to 1967 and in this year the first election was held in Lakshadweep. From 1967 to 2004, PM Sayeed held this constituency for ten consecutive terms which was a record. In 2004, he was defeated by P Pookunhi Koya of the Janata Dal (United). During 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the key candidates lined up are Abdul Khader Haji of BJP, MH Sayeed of INC, Mohammed Faizal PP of NCP and Mohammed Sadique of JD (U).

Patel (59) was unanimously elected BJP legislature party leader here on Sunday. His name was proposed by CM <keyword id="193875" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Vijay-Rupani" source="Orion">Vijay Rupani</keyword>, whose resignation from the post on Saturday surprised many. Most of the 112 MLAs of the party in the 182-member Assembly were present at the meeting, BJP sources said. Patel won the 2017 Gujarat Legislative Assembly elections from Ghatlodia constituency, defeating Congress candidate Shashikant Patel by over one lakh votes, the highest winning margin in the 2017 Gujarat polls. He holds a diploma in civil engineering and is considered close to former CM Anandiben Patel, who won from the seat in 2012 polls. With Patel being named the new legislature party leader, the suspense over who will succeed Rupani as Gujarat chief minister has ended. The new leader will meet the governor and stake claim to form the government, sources said. BJP's central observers Narendra Singh Tomar and Prahlad Joshi and party general secretary Tarun Chaug were present at the legislature party meet. Tomar met state BJP chief C R Paatil on Sunday morning. There was talk that Praful Khoda Patel, administrator of the union territories of Lakshadweep and Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu and Mansukh Mandaviya, Union Health Minister, were among the contenders. <keyword id="908125" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bhupendra-Patel" source="Orion">Bhupendra Patel</keyword>'s name was not in the long list of probables being discussed in state political circles and in a way the first term MLA emerged as the dark horse, a political observer said. Rupani (65) on Saturday resigned from the post, his sudden announcement coming over a year before the state goes to polls. It is not clear what prompted the development in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's home state where elections to the 182-member Assembly are due in December 2022. Rupani, the fourth chief minister to demit office in BJP-ruled states during the coronavirus pandemic, was sworn in as chief minister - his second stint as CM - in December 2017. Rupani, who completed five years in office on August 7 this year, first became the chief minister on August 7, 2016, following the resignation of incumbent Anandiben Patel, and continued in the office after the BJP's victory in the 2017 Assembly elections. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been pushing for simultaneous elections for both state and central legislatures, but the proposal has faced severe political opposition. Nearly 900 million voters are expected to turn out this year, compared to 814.5 million in 2014. The number of polling stations will be increased from 900,000 in 2014 to 1 million this year. 16 million new voters will be between the age of 18 and 19, compared to 23.1 million in 2014. 1.7 million voter verifiable paper audit trail (VVPAT) machines will be in use after a <a href="https://www.indiatoday.in/elections/story/the-many-claims-of-evm-tampering-in-india-1435638-2019-01-21" data-type="tilCustomLink" target="_blank">series</a> of allegations of foul play in many state polls in the run up to the general elections in 2019. VVPAT is a second line of independent verification via a printer machine, which is attached to electronic voting machines. When a voter presses the button against the party symbol of their choice on the electronic voting machine (EVM), a paper slip is printed through VVPAT. The slip would contain the poll symbol and name of the candidate and allows voters to verify if their vote has gone to the intended candidate. After the voter views the slip, that slip will be dropped inside a sealed box linked to the EVM. "The Model Code of Conduct comes into effect from today itself in the entire country.
