Election 2019: BJP Candidate list for West Bengal

<ul><li>West Bengal sends 42 members to the Lok Sabha. </li><li>The two major political parties playing big roles this elections in the state are the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Trinamool Congress (TMC). </li><li>However, the state’s election is also marred by communal politics. </li></ul>The state of West Bengal sends 42 members to the Lok Sabha, the lower house of Indian Parliament, which has 543 seats. The polling has been spread out through all the seven phases of the ongoing election, not because of the states’ strength in the Parliament, but because the state embodies the country’s polarised and vitiated political environment like few others. The two major political parties playing big roles in this election are the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and both have completely different stance in the state. The fallout of the Congress and CPI(M) alliance further led to the BJP and TMC command authoritative positions in the elections. In its election manifesto, the BJP has once again pushed for the Citizenship Amendment Bill, which will move to grant citizenship to immigrants from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan and to deport undocumented immigrants, even though Muslim immigrants will not be considered for it. The BJP’s <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/elections/lok-sabha/west-bengal/mamata-allying-with-those-who-wish-to-break-country-pm-modi/articleshow/68763916.cms">charge</a> is that the TMC has covertly built a Muslim vote bank for itself by bringing in illegal immigrants from neighbouring countries. The party’s growing <a href="https://www.firstpost.com/politics/bjp-making-inroads-in-bengal-clear-from-crowd-at-modis-kolkata-rally-tmcs-minority-appeasement-policy-a-factor-6384681.html">prominence</a> is a sign that the allegation is being accepted by a part of the state’s hindu population. Meanwhile, the TMC had <a href="https://www.hindustantimes.com/india-news/at-bengal-rally-pm-attacks-mamata-seeks-tmc-support-for-citizenship-bill/story-BOkijM1yoe0xdWBDZAjEvK.html">called</a> the bill “discriminatory” and the state’s muslim minority is backing her despite the annoyance with the government’s performance. A slew of governance issues and <a href="https://theprint.in/theprint-essential/saradha-ponzi-scheme-the-scam-behind-mamatas-dharna-against-cbi/187686/">corruption scandals </a>have marred chief minister Mamata Banerjee’s image. But the minorities back the chief minister, against the BJP, for the fear of vilification if the latter were to gain ground in the state. "Despite having anger against the state government over various issues including several riots that took place in the state, the minorities will vote for TMC in the state to ensure their safety and security," Mohammed Kamruzzaman, General Secretary of All Bengal Minority Youth Federation told PTI in <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/elections/lok-sabha/west-bengal/to-stop-bjp-minorities-likely-to-go-with-tmc-in-bengal/articleshow/68450898.cms">March</a>. Bengal used to be the hotbed for communal violence even before independence but communal violence had nearly disappeared by the turn of the previous century. It is making a comeback now. It is because of the heightened tensions that the BJP had even asked the Election Commission to declare West Bengal as a “super sensitive state”. The EC had then deployed 24 police observers in the state. “In every state, police observers are deployed. According to rough estimates of appointment, a police observer will supervise two constituencies. This is not unique to Bengal. Elections 2019: Voting begins in West Bengal amid simmering communal tensions that have polarised the state’s population

The <keyword id="58687" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bharatiya-Janata-Party">Bharatiya Janata Party</keyword> (BJP) has released a list of '<keyword id="6457266" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="star-campaigners">Star Campaigners</keyword>' for <keyword id="6357783" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="West-bengal">West Bengal</keyword> and Assam Assembly polls. Prime Minister <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword> will lead the party's campaign in both the states. Actor Mithun Chakraborty, who joined the BJP at the Prime Minister's rally on Sunday, has been made one of the star campaigners of the party in West Bengal. On March 9, in a letter to the <keyword id="6359191" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="election">Election</keyword> Commission, BJP National General Secretary and Rajya Sabha member Arun Singh submitted the list of 40 star campaigners to the poll body. "List of leaders of the BJP who would be participating in election campaigning pertaining to the Assembly elections in the state of West Bengal (Phase-I)," Singh wrote. Similarly, Singh also submitted a list of star campaigners for Assam Assembly polls. Apart from Modi and Chakravorty, BJP's list of star campaigners for West Bengal includes party chief J.P. Nadda, Union ministers Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh, Nitin Gadkari, Arjun Munda, <keyword id="197418" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Dharmendra-Pradhan">Dharmendra Pradhan</keyword>, Smriti Irani and Babul Supriyo. These apart, chief ministers <keyword id="43254" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Yogi-Adityanath">Yogi Adityanath</keyword> and Shivraj Singh Chouhan would also seek votes for BJP candidates in West Bengal. Others names include Manoj Tiwari, Locket Chatterjee, Roopa Ganguly, Shanawaz Hussain. Kailash Vijayvargiya, Dilip Ghosh, Suvendu Adhikari, Rajib Banerjee, Arvind Menon, Amit Malviya. Actress Payal Sarkar and Srabanti Chatterjee, who recently joined the BJP, have also been made star campaigners of the party in West Bengal. In a separate list of start campaigners for Assam, the BJP named Modi, Nadda, Shah, Gadkari, B.L. Santosh, Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, Himanta Biswa Sarma, state President Ranjeet Kumar Dass, Narednra Singh Tomar, Jitendra Singh, Irani, Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi, Arunachal Pradesh and Manipur chief ministers Prema Khandu and N. The <keyword id="58687" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bharatiya-Janata-Party">Bharatiya Janata Party</keyword> leading on 17 seats. The Times Now Exit Poll Predictions had said Mamta Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress might not do as well as it did in 2014 elections. The projections forecast TMC winning from 28 out of 42 seats in West Bengal. Though the vote share of TMC might remain the same in 2019 <keyword id="6355187" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="lok-sabha">Lok Sabha</keyword> election result as it was in 2014, the predictions presuppose that the TMC’s seats might be down by about 6 this time. In 2014 Lok Sabha elections, the TMC got 34 seats out of 42. The remaining 8 seats were distributed among the other contesting parties at the rate of 2 for BJP, 4 for the Congress party and 2 for the left front led by the CPI (M). If the Times Now Predictions match with the actual turnout after the results are announced, the BJP might be winning 11 seats from West Bengal in 2019 Lok Sabha elections, while the party could get only 2 seats during 2014 general elections from this state. The TMC contested from all the 42 constituencies in West Bengal. While choosing the candidates to represent the party in 2019 elections from this state, Mamta Banerjee had decided to drop 10 sitting MPs and getting in 18 new candidates. Besides the 42 seats in West Bengal, TMC contested from 3 seats in Jharkhand, 2 seats in Odisha, 2 seats in Bihar, and 1 seat in Andamans. TMC has also decided to let its candidates try their luck from 10 assembly constituencies in Odisha as the state of Odisha is going for assembly and Lok Sabha 2019 polls simultaneously. The Party’s sitting MP Abhishek Banerjee, the nephew of Mamta Banerjee, the TMC chief faced the elections once more from Diamond Harbor, his winning constituency. The celebrity candidate of TMV Mimi Chakraborty contested from Jadavpur. Yet another star candidate of TMC Nusrat Jahan fought from Basirhat Lok Sabha constituency.

TMC lok Sabha Election result 2019: BJP is putting up a tough fight in West Bengal

The 2019 Lok Sabha Election dates were finally out on March 10, 2019. The country will vote to select the MPs for the Parliament who will represent its 543 constituencies. The seven phase polling across the country is scheduled on April 11, April 18, April 23, April 29, May 6, May 12 and May 19. After the polling is over, the votes across the country will be counted on a single day on May 23 and the results will be announced on the same day before the evening. A staggering 93 per cent of the candidates who won the 2024 <keyword id="56978" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Lok-Sabha-elections" source="Orion">Lok Sabha elections</keyword> are <keyword id="6366800" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="crorepatis" source="Orion">crorepatis</keyword>, up from 88 per cent in 2019, according to an analysis by poll rights body <keyword id="484381" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Association-of-Democratic-Reforms" source="Orion">Association of Democratic Reforms</keyword> (<keyword id="45376" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ADR" source="Orion">ADR</keyword>). The top three wealthiest candidates are TDP's Chandra Sekhar Pemmasani from Andhra Pradesh's Guntur constituency with assets worth Rs 5,705 crore, BJP's Konda Vishweshwar Reddy from Telangana's Chevella with total assets amounting to Rs 4,568 crore and BJP's Naveen Jindal from Haryana's Kurukshetra with assets worth Rs 1,241 crore. Out of the 543 winning candidates, 504 are crorepatis, the analysis found. In 2019, 475 (88 per cent) winning candidates were crorepatis and 443 (82 per cent) in 2014. The trend indicates a steady climb since 2009 when only 315 (58 per cent) MPs were crorepatis. According to the analysis, 227 (95 per cent) of the BJP's 240 winning candidates, 92 (93 per cent) of the Congress' 99, 21 (95 per cent) of the DMK's 22, 27 (93 per cent) of the TMC's 29 and 34 (92 per cent) of the Samajwadi Party's 37 candidates have declared assets worth more than Rs 1 crore. All winning candidates of the AAP (3), the JDU (12) and the TDP (16) are crorepatis, ADR data showed. The analysis also delves into candidates' chances of winning based on their financial backgrounds. It found that the probability of a crorepati candidate clinching victory in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections stood at 19.6 per cent, compared to a meagre 0.7 per cent for candidates with assets less than a crore. The analysis also provides a breakdown of wealth distribution among the winning candidates. The data showed that 42 per cent of the candidates possess assets totalling Rs 10 crore and above. While 19 per cent of the candidates fall within the bracket of Rs 5 to 10 crore, 32 per cent hold assets ranging between Rs 1 and 5 crore. Only about 1 per cent of the winning candidates have assets worth less than Rs 20 lakh. Among major parties, the average assets per winning candidate vary significantly. The TDP leads with an average of Rs 442.26 crore per winner, followed by the BJP with Rs 50.04 crore, the DMK with Rs 31.22 crore, the Congress with Rs 22.93 crore, TMC with Rs 17.98 crore and SP with Rs 15.24 crore. The analysis also highlights disparities within the financial profiles of winning candidates. While some boast of substantial assets, others have relatively low worth. For instance, BJP's Jyotirmay Singh Mahato from West Bengal's Purulia has declared assets totalling a mere Rs 5 lakh. Similarly, TMC's Mitali Bag from West Bengal's Arambag holds assets worth Rs 7 lakh. Assets of SP's Priya Saroj from Uttar Pradesh's Machhlishahr are valued at Rs 11 lakh. In addition, the analysis identifies candidates with high liabilities. TDP's Pemmasani tops the list with liabilities exceeding Rs 1,038 crore. DMK's S Jagathratchakan from Tamil Nadu's Arakkonam has liabilities worth Rs 649 crore and TDP's Prabhakar Reddy Vemireddy from Andhra Pradesh's Nellore has liabilities worth Rs 197 crore.
