<keyword id="6356166" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Airbus">Airbus</keyword>, the leading aircraft manufacturing player in the world is now fuelling the start-ups boom in India with its business accelerator programme. 

	Airbus launched its third business accelerator programme in Bengaluru after Toulouse (France) and Hamburg (Germany). 
 “It is an amazing place with regards to start-ups and manufacturing. But when it comes to aircraft manufacturing, it is definitely not the best ground play for them. It is complex and you need time and money for development. It is a niche market. So if you do not help <keyword id="6362513" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Startups">startups</keyword> to come in this market, they will never come into it,” said <keyword id="3149522" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Bruno-Gutierres">Bruno Gutierres</keyword>, head of <keyword id="3266493" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Airbus-Bizlabs">Airbus Bizlabs</keyword>. 

	This accelerator is hybrid which means that Indian start-ups and Airbus engineers work together on the same platform.
 

	So what’s in it for Airbus?
 

	“Airbus engineers are benefiting from Indian entrepreneurs,” said Bruno.
 

	Also, start-ups help them to create value around the platform. There’s one startup taking care of healthcare- a very distant relationship with aeronautical engineering. Even Bruno said there is a thin line, but explained.
 

	“While working in an aeronautical environment, the crew develop specific diseases from changing pressure, jet lag, stress etc. This healthcare startup is creating disruptive technology to treat the crew,” he added.
 

	The accelerator’s plan is to create a new engineered entrepreneur generation to fuel aeronautical engineering in India.
 

	When asked about the government’s Startup India initiative, he said, “There are opportunities and provisions to fuel startup boom in India. But all these should be given to the start-ups and not to the private corporate players.”

How Airbus is fuelling the startup boom in India

India has been attracting massive global attention and investor interest for the past few months. The latest is European plane-maker <keyword id="6356166" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Airbus">Airbus</keyword>, which is banking on <keyword id="6354321" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Bengaluru">Bengaluru</keyword> for new business ideas for its aircraft programmes. It is for the first time in its 46-year history that the company is seeking ideas from startups across the world. Airbus already has an engineering centre in Bengaluru. The company’s first stop outside its French base is <keyword id="4823" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Hamburg">Hamburg</keyword>, <keyword id="87" type="COUNTRY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Germany">Germany</keyword>, while the second would be the <keyword id="6357722" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="silicon-valley">Silicon Valley</keyword>, making it the latest global company to cash in on growing number of entrepreneurs in Asia's third largest <keyword id="34412" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="economy">economy</keyword>, as per an Economic Times report. The initiative is part of Airbus' business accelerator programme called <keyword id="2879641" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="BizLabs">BizLabs</keyword>, under which it would select business ideas outside its French base and mentor them. 
	 

	Till now, it has only scouted for ideas within the group. The only level where it has engaged with other companies is for supply of plane parts or technology. “What is the weakness of a big group like Airbus when we talk about innovation? We believe that we have better ideas than the rest of the world. We believe that we know because we control the technologies and platforms. The world has shown us in the car industry, the space industry and the hi-tech industry that this is not true. And we need to be open to others' ideas and others' innovations," said its global CEO <keyword id="627085" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Fabrice-Bregier">Fabrice Bregier</keyword> recently. 
	 

	"I think in Bengaluru—with what we know and what we have already invested, especially on systems innovations—we can come up with very good ideas," he said, adding that platforms in both locations (Hamburg and Bengaluru) may be set up in 12 months. 
	 

	Meanwhile, technology startups in India attracted investments of over $1 billion in January-March, up two-fold from the same quarter last year. 
	 

	Bregier gave the example of a telecom company which works on "ultra narrow band" systems which isn't normally useful for Airbus. But the application is really efficient in testing whether doors are locked while on tarmacs. "This is small, this is cheap but it is such a thing nobody cares for within Airbus," he said, stressing on importance to look for ideas outside.

Looks like <keyword id="44373" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Aditya-Birla-Group">Aditya Birla group</keyword> is all set to tap the entrepreneurial ideas of its employees, which is why it has planned to roll out an intrapreneurship programme soon, which is called Innolabs. Under the programme, the company will allow its staff to take time off from work to pursue their entrepreneurial ambitions. 
 
In August last year, the group had also started Aditya Birla Bizlabs, which was its programme to collaborate with start-ups in the retail, financial services and telecom businesses. The group has a dominant presence in these sectors. Out of the 1,200 start-ups that applied for the programme, 20 were selected to "scale up". 
 "When we were doing all of this (Bizlabs) for startups outside, our employees joining us from IITs and IIMs started asking: what is there in it for us? So, we have started working on something for our employees called <keyword id="3249352" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="aditya-birla-innolabs">Aditya Birla Innolabs</keyword>," Umesh Adhikary, president, corporate strategy and business development, Aditya Birla Group told ET. 
 
"If your idea is great and we see conviction and passion in you, we are going to help you create a company of your own. At the same time, we are going to give you a six-month or one-year sabbatical where you are going to go, develop the product, create your own team... and in case you fail, you can come and join back," added Adhikary. 
 
"We are forging partnerships with Nasscom 10,000 startups, Microsoft Ventures, Techstars, 500 startups," said Adhikary, who added that the group would prefer to work with slightly older startups which are looking at geographic expansion. 
 
Similarly, RIL has set up GenNext Innovation Hub, which is a start-up accelerator programme running in partnership with Microsoft Ventures. 
 
"It's a healthy development," says Sharad Sharma, cofounder of iSPIRT, commenting on Birla's move. "It's a playbook that Indian conglomerates have companies from tech companies globally and it's a proven one," he adds.
