B9 Beverages Ltd, Bira 91's parent company, on Wednesday said it is raising $25 million in new funding from <keyword id="20841250" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tiger-pacific-capital" source="keywords">Tiger Pacific Capital</keyword>, an Asia-focused fund headquartered in New York and Hong Kong. The new investment is part of a $50 million round raised by the company, with participation from its existing investor, <keyword id="20635955" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="kirin-holdings" source="keywords">Kirin Holdings</keyword> of Japan, and Tiger Pacific Capital from New York, it said in a statement. "As Bira 91 takes next steps to drive growth across markets and strengthen its supply chain, this new partnership will strengthen the company's balance sheet considerably," said <keyword id="20841253" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ankur-jain" source="keywords">Ankur Jain</keyword>, Founder and CEO, Bira 91. Bira91, which in its name carries India’s country code – 91, introduced a new product called the Indian Pale Ale. “It’s a beer style that was imagined for India, that was shipped to India, that was created in India, and it’s redefined craft beer globally.  Four years since its launch, Bira91 is making Indians more accustomed to beer, but according to their own taste! It recently launched a beer for the Indian masses – Boom, which is available across 10 states in the country. Bira91, which had its first brewery in Belgium in 2015, has been on a rapid expansion mode in India. It is currently present in the states of Karnataka, Delhi NCR, Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh. “There is a large focus from our side on tier 1 cities, tier 2 cities. So lot of our growth this year is expected to come from tier-2 cities,” said Jain. With beer being India’s second-largest packaged beverage after carbonated drinks, it is fuelling the growth of Bira91. It is also one of the official sponsors of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019. Jain believes its female following will help drive sales. “ I really think as consumption moves towards bars and restaurants, it is definitely going to be driven by females,” said Jain. According to a Research and Markets report, the Indian alcohol market is growing at a compound annual growth rate of 8.8% and is expected to reach 16.8 billion litres of consumption by the year 2022.

Bira91 wants to be more Indian after 4 years of selling craft beer in the country

It will also be expanding its reach in an attempt to go deeper into the country.</li><li>We speak to <keyword id="658991" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ankur-jain" source="Orion">Ankur Jain</keyword>, Founder &amp; CEO, Bira 91 who tells us about their secret sauce and their areas of focus going ahead.</li></ul><keyword id="782706" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="craft-beer" source="Orion">Craft beer</keyword> company Bira recently came up with its first-ever campaign. From a brand that was first brought into existence to serve just one small neighborhood in Delhi (the upmarket Hauz Khas Village), it has now expanded its portfolio to seven different flavors of beer, with one new beer every week at its taprooms. The brand has also forayed into merchandizing. The last few years have seen Bira go on an impressive growth trajectory. It has grown at 150% CAGR from 2016-2021 and has grown by 2X compared to pre-Covid levels while tripling its market share in the last two years. And this is just the start of their story, shares Ankur Jain, Founder &amp; CEO, Bira 91, who started the company after being disappointed by the lack of good beer in India. “When we started out in 2015, our goal was to place our product in 30 bars out of the 50 in Hauz Khas Village (HKV). We launched with a wheat beer and lager, and only on tap, no bottles and no cans! Very quickly, we were able to bring our product to almost all bars in HKV. And interestingly, we immediately started gaining a lot of love and followers and consumers started switching from established brands like <keyword id="6360137" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="kingfisher" source="Orion">Kingfisher</keyword>, <keyword id="81732" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="heineken" source="Orion">Heineken</keyword> and <keyword id="174607" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="carlsberg" source="Orion">Carlsberg</keyword> to Bira 91,” remembered Jain. Once he saw the kind of reception the beer got, Jain said they revised their ambition and started making a roadmap of taking the product to other parts of the city and slowly to other states. Fast forward 6 years, Bira is now one of the most visible homegrown beer brands with a loyal following. “Over the last 6-7 years, we've been very lucky to get immense love from our consumers, and a lot of support from our suppliers and investors. It's fair to say we've created a franchise with a semblance of scale. At this point, we're probably the largest consumer brand, not just the largest beer brand, that's emerged out of India in the last decade. This year, consumers will spend over Rs 2000 crore on Bira 91 products, which for a single brand, in an Indian context, is pretty large. And over the last 12-24 months, especially as the world's been infected by COVID and these unprecedented times, what's been really heartening to see is that we've actually doubled our volume, and tripled our market share, which means that consumers are making much more deliberate choices when they're picking up the beers they want to drink, and really want more value from the pint or can that they consume in the form of flavors, which has been our promised throughout,” explained Jain. Since alcohol brands are not really allowed to traditionally market their products, most brands have to go for surrogate marketing. However, Bira did things a little differently. “There were three things we did differently. Firstly, we completely focused on <keyword id="1777661" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="draught-beer" source="Orion">draught beer</keyword>. We realized that there were very few bars in India that served beer on tap and we realized we could become leaders in the space. Today, we're the number one draught beer brand in the country, and it gave us the added advantage of being visible at the bar instead of being relegated to a refrigerator. Secondly, we really focused on the point of sale, which meant premium displays and encouraging people to try products through our events, activations and promotions. And thirdly, we really focused on digital. But it wasn’t only about social media. We wanted to use digital to solve consumer problems. For example, back in 2015 or 2016, one of our first campaigns was, we almost built a neighborhood guide with monkeys to tell people where to find Bira 91. We also partnered with Zomato and created the first branded keyword search wherein one could type Bira 91 near me and it would throw up a list of bars and restaurants where Bira 91 was being served,” shared Jain. The brand also came up with its first ever 360-degree campaign ‘Make Play With Flavors’. Explaining what it was all about, Jain said, “We have very cheekily called it Make Play with Flavors which is a pun on Make Way. Nobody wants to drink the same beers as their dads and that switchover is currently underway. We feel this generation wants a diversity of tastes and flavors in the products they consume. And therefore, the tagline make play with flavors.” The brand had also very quickly realized the potential that a merchandizing arm could hold and had launched it around 4-5 years back. In the last two years, the business has grown by about 3X and the company is constantly expanding on its offerings, which would also include a premium apparel collection. On where he thinks the next phase of growth for the brand will come from Jain said, “One of the things we are very focused on is innovation. We'll be launching more products next year than in the last five years combined. And people can expect a lot more flavors from us next year. Secondly, we are also expanding our taproom business. Currently, we have one taproom and we'll be expanding to potentially a couple of cities over the next 6-12 months. And the third area of growth for us will be essentially from going deeper into Bharath, taking our products to new states and even deeper into our existing states and making sure that our products are available in more stores.”

<ul><li>In an interview with Business Insider, <keyword id="6862143" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Prabhtej-Singh-Bhatia">Prabhtej Singh Bhatia</keyword>, co-founder of <keyword id="7455615" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="simba-beer">Simba beer</keyword>, says the brand is for India’s millennials who wanted the real taste of beer. </li><li>In 2017-18, the company reported a revenue of ₹76 crore in 2017-18 and ₹125 crore in 2018-19. </li><li>The beer is available in the cities of Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Goa, Kolkata and the states of Chattisgarh and Assam</li></ul>India’s homegrown beer market has gained popularity with the likes of <keyword id="3195140" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bira91">Bira91</keyword>, <keyword id="138117" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Simba">Simba</keyword>, White Rhino among others, serving Indian millennials with tasteful beer in quirky bottles. Simba beer which is now found on shelves at Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Goa, Kolkata and the states of Chattisgarh and Assam, actually started off in Durg, Chattisgarh. Born to a family that has been in the liquor business since 1948, 27-year old Prabhtej Singh Bhatia decided to build a brewery in the state where he grew up in. And now, Simba is opening its second brewery in Arunachal Pradesh as it plans to conquer the North Eastern market. The company officially launched its first beer Simba Strong in market in 2016, and followed it up with Lager, Wit and Stout. It reported revenue of ₹76 crore in 2017-18 and ₹125 crore in 2018-19. “Now we want to further strengthen our presence in these markets and not just grow geographically. By the end of the year, I hope to offer a portfolio of beer products to all of these cities we are currently in,” Bhatia told Business Insider India. But they have competition in the form of Bira91 which is also growing fast in numbers and geographically too. “In the price range we are in, we are behind only Bira in terms of absolute volumes,” said Bhatia. How he did it In 2009, Bhatia went to the UK for his graduation and when he came home for summers, he realised the lack of a product level distinction of beer in India. “There was just a general notion that beer is to get you high. But now, more and more younger consumers are demanding it more for the taste of it and want a better product for a better experience of drinking it with friends,” said Bhatia. While in his first year of graduation, Bhatia applied for a license and finally got one when he came back in 2012. His first choice of land was in Durg, but he had to face resistance from locals who had a social taboo against brewing beer. Finally, he set up a brewery in Durg’s industrial area. It took them 1.5 years to set up the brewery and even after that, they didn’t know how to make the right kind of beer. “We tied up with SAB Miller for contract manufacturing of their beers. For two years, we only did their production to ensure we learn how to make a beer making facility efficient and also get the quality consistency right,” said Bhatia. In May 2016, they launched the Simba Strong in Chhattisgarh and also focused on making the packaging strong enough to generate brand recall. “In 2017, we doubled our capacity. In 2018 we ended the contract with SAB Miller and started making Simba alone,” he said. Today, the capacity of the Durg brewery is 86.4 million bottles a year.

A 27-year old has his own beer brand that is earning ₹125 crore just in its third year

This beer brand which has been around for only four years, is popular amongst millennials. It will replace Chinese phone maker Oppo. As Team India heads for its West Indies tour beginning on August 3, it will be the last time Oppo will feature on the jersey, according to IANS. Following that, the South Africa tour in September will feature Byju’s. Gone are the days when it was only MNCs had the ability to sponsor the ‘always under spotlight’ Indian cricket matches. From Paytm to Bira91 and now Byju’s, from the Indian startup ecosystem managed to garner global attention with advertisements, endorsements and sponsorship. In March 2017, Oppo had won the sponsorship rights for five years by paying ₹10.79 billion. According to reports, Byju’s will pay the same amount until 2022. “Basically, what Oppo has done is cut its losses. They've re reassigned the rights to <keyword id="6384897" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="byjus">Byju's</keyword>. They will pay Byju's a minor amount to help make the full payment while Byju's will pay the BCCI,” a source told <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/sports/cricket/news/byjus-to-replace-oppo-on-team-india-jersey/articleshow/70370926.cms">TOI.</a> In May 2019, Byju’s had reported that it had turned profitable. The startup’s revenue tripled to reach ₹14.3 billion in the financial year ending March 2019. Its paid user base had increased from 1.26 million in June 2018 to 2.4 million in May 2019.
