According to respective company sources, Biological E is holding 200 million doses of its COVID-19 vaccine <keyword id="11370342" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="corbevax" source="Orion">Corbevax</keyword> while Bharat Biotech is sitting on a stockpile of 50 million doses of Covaxin. Dr Vikram Paradkar, Executive Vice President (Manufacturing), Biological E, said the firm produced about 30 crore doses of Corbevax in total, abiding by the vaccine manufacturing commitment to the Central government. In March '22, Biological E successfully supplied 10 crore doses to the government. "Currently, we have approximately 20 crore (200 million) doses that are fully tested and ready for supply, as and when we receive orders. Additionally, we manufactured 20 crore doses equivalent of the antigen which will help us ramp up the manufacturing of the Corbevax finished product quickly," Paradkar told PTI. The vaccine has been developed by Biological E in collaboration with Texas Children's Hospital Center for Vaccine Development (Texas Children's CVD) and Baylor College of Medicine (Baylor) in Houston, Texas, USA. He further said Biological E can begin with the additional vaccine supplies within eight weeks of future orders and can manufacture and supply approximately 10 crore doses of Corbevax on a monthly basis as per its qualified manufacturing capacity. Bharat Biotech sources said the vaccine maker has more than 50 million doses of Covaxin readily available in vials, and over 200 million doses as drug substance. "Additional production capacity is also available to meet product demand," they said adding fresh stocks of the vaccine are available and ready for supplies. Covaxin, India's indigenous COVID-19 vaccine, was developed in collaboration with the <keyword id="6364555" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="indian-council-of-medical-research" source="Orion">Indian Council of Medical Research</keyword> (ICMR) - National Institute of Virology (NIV). Biological E, Bharat Biotech together sitting on stockpile of 250 million COVID vaccine doses

Hyderabad, Biological E. Ltd, a Hyderabad-based vaccine and <keyword id="24214" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="pharmaceutical-company">pharmaceutical company</keyword>, and <keyword id="10398356" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="the-ohio-state-innovation-foundation">the Ohio State Innovation Foundation</keyword> on Tuesday announced an exclusive license agreement for a Covid-19 vaccine technology. The <keyword id="15091" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ohio">Ohio</keyword> State Innovation Foundation has licensed novel live attenuated measles virus vectored vaccine candidates against SARS-CoV-2, which were developed by the <keyword id="10398357" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="ohio-state-university-college">Ohio State University College</keyword> of Veterinary Medicine, exclusively to Biological E. BE will be responsible for the evaluation and further development, including the commercialisation of the vaccine candidates. "Translating this vaccine platform into the hands of a global vaccine company for further evaluation and development is a critical step and we are excited that Biological E has taken on this role," said Dr Patrick Green, Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Studies, <keyword id="123150" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ohio-State-University">Ohio State University</keyword> College of Veterinary Medicine. The Ohio college team's approach utilises the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein as a target protein for SARS-CoV-2 vaccine candidates, generating a series of attenuated recombinant measles viruses (rMeVs) expressing SARS-CoV-2 antigens. All resultant rMeVs, the basis for the vaccine candidates, grow to high virus titer in Vero cells, a WHO-approved cell line for vaccine production. They were also shown to express the recombinant S antigens, a critical step in developing a SARS-CoV-2 vaccine. The rMeV-based SARs-CoV-2 vaccine candidates have proceeded through proof-of-concept trials in multiple animal models - demonstrating successful production of SARS-CoV-2 antibodies. "BE has been working to develop a safe and effective vaccine for the COVID-19. BE is very happy to help further this innovation and expand that effort," said Mahima Datla, Managing Director, Biological E. Biological E gets license for Ohio varsity's COVID-19 vaccine technology

The Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation's Subject Expert Committee on Wednesday asked the <keyword id="95879" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Serum-Institute-of-India">Serum Institute of India</keyword> and <keyword id="149108" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bharat-Biotech">Bharat Biotech</keyword> to submit more data and information to get emergency use authorisation (EUA) for their Covid-19 vaccine candidates. According to the minutes of the meeting, the committee recommended the Serum Institute of India to submit the updated safety data of the Phase 2/3 clinical trials, immunogenicity data from the clinical trial in UK and India, and outcome of the assessment of UK-MHRA for grant of EUA. During the meeting, the SII presented their proposal for grant of EUA of COVISHIELD, along with the interim safety data from Phase 3 clinical trial and interim safety and efficacy results of Phase 2/3 and Phase 3 clinical trials carried out in UK, other countries and India, before the committee. In the case of Bharat Biotech, the firm presented their proposal for grant of EUA, along with the interim safety and immunogenicity data of Phase 1 and 2 clinical trial carried out in the country before the committee. "After detailed deliberation, the committee recommended that the firm should present the safety and efficacy data from the ongoing Phase 3 clinical trial in the country for further consideration," the minutes of the meeting showed. America's Pfizer was the first to apply on December 4, followed by Pune-based SII and Hyderabad-based Bharat Biotech who applied on December 6 and 7, respectively. Pfizer has, however, requested more time to make presentation before the committee. Emergency Use Authorisation is a mechanism to facilitate the availability and use of medical countermeasures, including vaccines, during public health emergencies. Such an approval was given to Covid-19 drugs - remdesivir and favipiravir in June and itolizumab in July. On Tuesday, the Union Health Ministry informed that as many as eight Covid-19 vaccine candidates are under different stages of clinical trials which could be ready for authorization in near future. COVID-19 vaccine: SII and Bharat Biotech asked to submit more data for emergency approval

Global pharma major Pfizer on Thursday said it remains committed to engaging with the Indian government to explore opportunities to make Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine available in the country. The UK on Wednesday became the first country to approve the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine against COVID-19 with the UK regulator Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA)granting a temporary authorisation for its emergency use. "Right now we are in discussions with many governments around the world and remain committed to engaging with the Government of India and explore opportunities to make this vaccine available for use in the country," a Pfizer spokesperson said in a statement. Pfizer is committed to ensuring everyone has the opportunity to have access to the vaccine, and is working closely with governments, it added. "During this pandemic phase, Pfizer will supply this vaccine only through government contracts based on agreements with respective government authorities and following regulatory authorisation or approval," the statement said. The UK regulator, MHRA has granted a temporary authorisation for emergency use of COVID-19 mRNA vaccine. This constitutes the first Emergency Use Authorisation following a worldwide phase 3 trial of a vaccine to help fight the pandemic, Pfizer said on Wednesday. "As we anticipate further authorizations and approvals, we are focused on moving with the same level of urgency to safely supply a high-quality vaccine around the world," Pfizer Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Albert Bourla said on Wednesday. In November, NITI Aayog member (Health) V K Paul, who also heads the National Task Force on COVID-19, had said the arrival of the <keyword id="9655003" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="pfizer-vaccine">Pfizer vaccine</keyword> in the country might take some months. "The arrangement of cold-chains for storing the vaccine developed by Pfizer at a low temperature of minus 70 degrees Celsius is a big challenge and it will not be easy for any nation. But then, if at all it has to be obtained, we are examining what we need to do...and will work out a strategy," he had said. Currently in India, Pune-based Serum Institute of India has said that it will apply for emergency use licensure for AstraZeneca-Oxford vaccine in two weeks. Phase-3 clinical trial of the indigenously-developed vaccine candidate of Bharat Biotech and the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) is also underway. While vaccine candidate of Zydus Cadila has completed the phase-2 clinical trial, pharma major Dr Reddy's Laboratories has started the combined phase 2 and 3 clinical trials of the Russian COVID-19 vaccine, Sputnik V, in India. Another domestic firm Biological E Ltd has also started early phase 1 and 2 human trials of its COVID-19 vaccine candidate. Pfizer claims its committed to making its COVID-19 vaccine available in India and engaging with the government

Three COVID-19 vaccines, developed by Bharat Biotech, Serum Institute of India and Pfizer, are under active consideration of India's drug regulator and there is hope that early licensure is possible for all or any of them, the Union health ministry said on Tuesday. Over the last four days, the Indian arm of US pharmaceutical giant Pfizer, Pune-based Serum Institute of India and Hyderabad-based pharmaceutical firm Bharat Biotech have applied to the <keyword id="281019" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Drugs-Controller-General">Drugs Controller General</keyword> of India (DCGI) seeking emergency use authorisation for their COVID-19 vaccines. At a press briefing, NITI Aayog member (Health) V K Paul said the COVID-19 situation in India has stabilised. With active cases reducing, a "clear-cut declining trend" in the pandemic is being seen even though the situation in many other countries is becoming quite serious, he said. The concern and anxiety following an increase in daily cases of infection in Delhi also looks like to have settled, Paul added. Asked what steps would be followed by the DCGI in the absence of a water-tight emergency use authorisation law for granting licence to <keyword id="24209" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="vaccine">vaccine</keyword> makers, Union Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan said not all countries' regulatory framework or rules and acts mention emergency use authorisation. "So, the fact that this phrase is not used in the national regulatory framework of any country does not mean that a specific country would not have an enabling provision to accord an approval which is early and distinct from a regular market approval. "India's regulatory framework has a specific provision for grant of emergency use authorisation, although this phrase is not used," he said. The New Drugs and Clinical Trials Rules, 2019, clearly specifies that under specific special situations, relaxation, abbreviation, omission, or deferment of data including local clinical trial data may be considered for approval. "This is our law. Similarly, other countries too have their laws," Bhushan said. Giving a bird's-eye view of the Indian landscape of COVID-19 vaccines, Bhushan mentioned that eight vaccines are at different stages of development. One is Covishield, manufactured by Serum Institute of India in collaboration with <keyword id="6409874" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="astrazeneca">AstraZeneca</keyword>. Phase two and three clinical trials of this vaccine is underway and the firm has applied for emergency use authorisation. Another is Covaxin, which is being indigenously developed by Bharat Biotech in collaboration with the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and is in phase three of clinical trials. It has also applied for emergency use authorisation. The third one is ZyCOV-D, being developed by Cadila Healthcare Ltd in Ahmedabad in collaboration with the Centre's Department of Biotechnology and is in phase two of the trials. The fourth vaccine candidate is Sputnik V which is being manufactured by Dr Reddy's Lab, Hyderabad, in collaboration with Russia's Gamaleya National Centre. The phase two trial in India is over and phase three will begin next week. The fifth one is NVX-CoV2373, which is being developed by Serum Institute of India in collaboration with Novavax and its phase three clinical trial is under consideration with the drug regulator. The sixth vaccine candidate is Recombinant Protein Antigen-based vaccine, to be manufactured by Biological E Ltd, Hyderabad, in collaboration with MIT, USA. Its pre-clinical animal studies have concluded and phase one and two human clinical trials have started. Another one is HGCO 19, being manufactured by Genova in Pune in collaboration with HDT, USA. Its pre-clinical animal studies are over and phase one and two clinical trials is set to start. The eighth vaccine is being developed by <keyword id="1028672" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bharat-Biotech-International">Bharat Biotech International</keyword> Ltd in collaboration with Thomas Jefferson University, USA and it is at the pre-clinical stages. "Another vaccine, which is in the initial stage, is being developed by <keyword id="171312" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Aurbindo-Pharma">Aurbindo Pharma</keyword>. So, there are nine vaccines out of which six are in clinical trials and three are in pre-clinical stage," Bhushan said. "There are multiple vaccine candidates in different stages of development and some may get licensed in the next few weeks. But we cannot foretell at this moment because licensure or market authorization is the domain of the national regulator." Most of the vaccines are of two or three doses to be administered three to four weeks apart. However, even after vaccination, COVID precautions must be taken and this has been advised by WHO also, Bhushan said, adding, "Vaccination does not mean people become carefree." About cold chain infrastructure augmentation, the health secretary said presently the system consists of 85,634 equipment for storage of vaccine at about 28,947 cold chain points across the country. "Current cold chain is capable of storing additional quantity of COVID-19 vaccine required for first the three crore -- healthcare and frontline workers," he said, adding states have collected data of frontline healthcare workers who would get the shots. The data is being uploaded on Co-WIN software, Bhushan said. The ministry, in consultation with states, has assessed the additional requirement for cold chain storage and the first supply of such additional equipment would begin from December 10, the health secretary said. Bhushan said that while 2.38 lakh auxiliary nurse midwives help in vaccination under universal immunisation programme, only 1.54 lakh such health workers will be used for COVID-19 inoculation. Additional vaccinators are being arranged in collaboration with states and UTs, he added. Three COVID-19 vaccines under active consideration of drug regulator: Health Ministry

The firm, in its application submitted to the drug regulator, has sought permission to import the vaccine for sale and distribution in the country, besides waiver of clinical trials on Indian population in accordance with the special provisions under <keyword id="10188407" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="the-new-drugs-and-clinical-trials-rules">the New Drugs and Clinical Trials Rules</keyword>, 2019, <keyword id="233909" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="official-sources">official sources</keyword> said. "Pfizer India has submitted an application on December 4 to the DCGI seeking emergency use authorization (EUA) for its COVID-19 vaccine in India," a source said. "The firm has submitted the EUA application in Form CT-18 for grant of permission to import and market Pfizer-BioNTech's COVID-19 mRNA vaccine BNT162b2 in the country," the source said, citing the application. The UK on Wednesday became the first country to approve the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine against COVID-19, with the UK regulator Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) granting a temporary authorisation for its emergency use. The British regulator said the jab, which claims to offer up to 95 per cent protection against COVID-19, is safe for roll-out. Bahrain on Friday also announced that it has granted an EUA for the two-dose vaccine made by Pfizer and its German partner BioNTech. The pharma company has already applied to the US FDA seeking EUA for the vaccine. The extreme low temperature of minus 70 degrees Celsius required for storing the vaccine poses a big challenge for its delivery in a country like India, especially in its smaller towns and rural areas where maintaining such cold chain facilities would be very difficult, top government officials have said. When contacted, Pfizer said it remains committed to engaging with the Government of India and explore opportunities to make this vaccine available for use in the country. "During this pandemic phase, Pfizer will supply this vaccine only through government contracts based on agreements with respective government authorities and following regulatory authorisation or approval," the global pharma major said in a statement. Five vaccines are in advanced phases of clinical trials in India with the Serum Institute of India conducting phase-3 trial of the Oxford-Astrazeneca COVID-19 vaccine, while the indigenously developed vaccine by Bharat Biotech in collaboration with ICMR has already started the phase-3 clinical trial. Drug firm <keyword id="72130" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Zydus-Cadila">Zydus Cadila</keyword> has received the approval from the DCGI to start the phase-3 clinical trials of the indigenously-developed anti-coronavirus vaccine.
