According to respective company sources, Biological E is holding 200 million doses of its COVID-19 vaccine <keyword id="11370342" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="corbevax" source="Orion">Corbevax</keyword> while Bharat Biotech is sitting on a stockpile of 50 million doses of Covaxin. Dr Vikram Paradkar, Executive Vice President (Manufacturing), Biological E, said the firm produced about 30 crore doses of Corbevax in total, abiding by the vaccine manufacturing commitment to the Central government. In March '22, Biological E successfully supplied 10 crore doses to the government. "Currently, we have approximately 20 crore (200 million) doses that are fully tested and ready for supply, as and when we receive orders. Additionally, we manufactured 20 crore doses equivalent of the antigen which will help us ramp up the manufacturing of the Corbevax finished product quickly," Paradkar told PTI. The vaccine has been developed by Biological E in collaboration with Texas Children's Hospital Center for Vaccine Development (Texas Children's CVD) and Baylor College of Medicine (Baylor) in Houston, Texas, USA. He further said Biological E can begin with the additional vaccine supplies within eight weeks of future orders and can manufacture and supply approximately 10 crore doses of Corbevax on a monthly basis as per its qualified manufacturing capacity. Bharat Biotech sources said the vaccine maker has more than 50 million doses of Covaxin readily available in vials, and over 200 million doses as drug substance. "Additional production capacity is also available to meet product demand," they said adding fresh stocks of the vaccine are available and ready for supplies. Covaxin, India's indigenous COVID-19 vaccine, was developed in collaboration with the <keyword id="6364555" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="indian-council-of-medical-research" source="Orion">Indian Council of Medical Research</keyword> (ICMR) - National Institute of Virology (NIV). Biological E, Bharat Biotech together sitting on stockpile of 250 million COVID vaccine doses

Limited, whose <keyword id="11370342" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="corbevax" source="Orion">Corbevax</keyword> on Tuesday received the approval from the Drugs Controller General of India (DGCI), plans to produce 75 million doses per month and anticipates over 100 million doses per month from February 2022. The Hyderabad-based company said these capacities will enable it to deliver 300 million doses as promised to the Government of India. Soon, the company plans to deliver more than one billion additional doses globally. Corbevax, India's first indigenously developed protein sub-unit vaccine against Covid-19, has been developed by Biological E in collaboration with Texas Children's Hospital Center for Vaccine Development (Texas Children's CVD) and Baylor College of Medicine (Baylor) in Houston, Texas. The vaccine will be effective both in scale and affordability, providing sustainable access to low-and middle-income countries, the vaccine maker said. "Our scientists at Texas Children's Hospital and Baylor College of Medicine are thrilled to help in the development of this vaccine, possibly the first Covid vaccine specifically designed for global health," said Dr. Peter Hotez, professor and dean of the National School of Tropical Medicine at Baylor and co-director of the Texas Children's Hospital Centre for Vaccine Development. "Over the years, we have worked to make quality vaccines and pharmaceutical products accessible to families around the world. With this as our backdrop, we resolved to develop an affordable and effective Covid-19 vaccine. It has now become a reality," said Mahima Datla, Managing Director, Biological E. Limited. Corbevax has completed two Phase III clinical trials involving more than 3,000 subjects between the ages of 18 and 80 at 33 study sites across India. The vaccine was found to be safe, well tolerated and immunogenic. Corbevax is a "recombinant protein sub-unit" vaccine, developed from the receptor binding domain (RBD) of the spike protein on the virus's surface combined with Dynavax's CpG 1018 adjuvant with alum, which helps the body build the immune response against the virus. "In the pivotal Phase III study conducted with an endpoint of immunogenic superiority, Corbevax demonstrated superior immune response in comparison with Covishield vaccine when assessed for Neutralising Antibody (nAb) Geometric Mean Titers (GMT) against the Ancestral-Wuhan strain and the globally dominant Delta variant. Corbevax vaccination also generated a significant Th1 skewed cellular immune response," Biological E said. According to the vaccine-maker, Corbevax nAb GMT against Ancestral-Wuhan strain is indicative of vaccine effectiveness of more than 90 per cent for prevention of symptomatic infections based on the Correlates of Protection assessment performed during Moderna and Astra-Zeneca vaccine Phase III studies. Against the Delta strain, it indicates a vaccine effectiveness of more than 80 per cent for the prevention of symptomatic infections based on published studies. While none of the subjects who took Corbevax or Covishield had serious adverse events, Corbevax had 50 per cent fewer adverse events than Covishield. Corbevax and ZyCoV-D – Things to keep in mind before taking your kids for COVID-19 vaccination

BE will be responsible for the evaluation and further development, including the commercialisation of the vaccine candidates. "Translating this vaccine platform into the hands of a global vaccine company for further evaluation and development is a critical step and we are excited that Biological E has taken on this role," said Dr Patrick Green, Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Studies, <keyword id="123150" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ohio-State-University">Ohio State University</keyword> College of Veterinary Medicine. The Ohio college team's approach utilises the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein as a target protein for SARS-CoV-2 vaccine candidates, generating a series of attenuated recombinant measles viruses (rMeVs) expressing SARS-CoV-2 antigens. All resultant rMeVs, the basis for the vaccine candidates, grow to high virus titer in Vero cells, a WHO-approved cell line for vaccine production. They were also shown to express the recombinant S antigens, a critical step in developing a SARS-CoV-2 vaccine. The rMeV-based SARs-CoV-2 vaccine candidates have proceeded through proof-of-concept trials in multiple animal models - demonstrating successful production of SARS-CoV-2 antibodies. The policies also cover fertility treatment, cancer treatment, gender reassignment surgery, and escaping domestic violence.Employees going through menopause have "the ability to work flexibly, take short notice leave or request to work from home," the company said. Staff dealing with pregnancy loss such as abortion or miscarriage will be able to take up to 10 days of paid leave, applying to both the individual who was pregnant, their partner, and a surrogate if applicable. Asos says the policy recognizes "that the impact and grief of pregnancy loss is felt by individuals, couples and families as well as the biological mother."Staff experiencing wider health-related and other life events such as cancer treatment, gender reassignment surgery, and fleeing domestic violence are offered up to six weeks of paid time off. An additional paid leave of "five days per cycle" is available to staff members undergoing fertility treatment. "Fertility procedures can be highly intrusive and often grueling," Asos said. "They can take their toll physically, emotionally and mentally."The policies come into effect Thursday, affecting over 3,800 Asos employees, most of whom are based in the UK. "All of us face unexpected challenges in life, and sometimes these can create very difficult circumstances which mean we need to step away from or change how we work," Asos CEO Nick Beighton said in a statement.Earlier this year, Asos bought Topshop, Topman, Miss Selfridge, and HIIT in a $364 million deal. The full study has not been made public.According to ClinicalTrials.gov, the government's database for such research, Juul has recently completed six clinical trials of its devices - which have been on the market since 2017 - and is currently in the process of conducting at least three more.For its latest work, company researchers and those from an outside lab called Celerion looked at 90 adult smokers and, over the course of five days, analyzed nine biological clues known as biomarkers that are thought to provide insights into disease or illness. In this case, they looked specifically at cancer-causing biomarkers linked with smoking tobacco-based cigarettes. E-cigarettes do not contain tobacco.Following common scientific protocol, the researchers divided the participants into groups and had some groups abstain from nicotine completely while others smoked normally and still others used Juul's e-cigs. In both the abstinence group and the Juul group, all of the measured biomarkers decreased dramatically, dropping by 85.3% on average in the non-vaping and non-smoking group and 85% in the Juul group. That's a positive sign and suggests that using Juul e-cigarettes in isolation is not linked with some of the potentially cancer-causing effects of regular tobacco cigarettes.<h2>Unanswered questions about vaping and health</h2><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image">SRITAPublic-health experts and scientists worry about Juul's skyrocketing popularity among young people who otherwise would not have smoked.</div></div></div>The study still leaves many unanswered questions about the relative health of vaping, however. In comparison to most clinical trials conducted in recent years on e-cigarettes, such as this <a href="https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0198047">study</a> published in the journal PLoS One and this <a href="https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamanetworkopen/fullarticle/2688346">study</a> published in the Journal of the American Medical Association in July 2018, take place over a minimum of several months, if not years.Also, the number of participants in the study was small. Most other research on e-cigarettes, including the two papers above as well as this <a href="https://academic.oup.com/aje/article/187/11/2397/5046037">study</a> in the American Journal of Epidemiology and this <a href="https://annals.org/aim/article-abstract/2676738/association-e-cigarette-use-smoking-cessation-among-smokers-who-plan?doi=10.7326%2fM17-2048">study</a> in the Annals of Internal Medicine, look at anywhere from 1,000 to 4,000 participants.In addition, the study looked at biomarkers that are specifically linked to tobacco, a substance that e-cigarettes like Juul do not contain. Now, it's teaming up with a new startup called Lavvan to make the cannabis compound CBD using the same tools in a <a href="https://www.globenewswire.com/news-release/2019/03/18/1756622/0/en/Amyris-Finalizes-Cannabinoid-Development-Licensing-and-Commercialization-Agreement-Containing-300-Million-of-R-D-and-Milestone-Payments-and-a-Long-Term-Royalty-Stream.html">$255 million</a> deal. The primary goal of the partnership - the company's largest collaboration agreement yet - is to make high-quality CBD for less money than the cost of traditional agriculture, Amyris CEO John Melo told Business Insider. CBD is a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/heineken-marijuana-beer-taste-photos-lagunitas-2018-8">highly-touted</a> but <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/cbd-marijuana-hemp-billions-health-industry-wall-street-analysts-2019-2">under-studied</a> wellness ingredient found in marijuana and hemp plants. Melo said he sees one potentially straightforward opportunity for the compound: using Amyris' experience in sweetener to make CBD-based drinks that actually taste good."There's an opportunity here for a flavor solution," Melo said.<h2>CBD is in everything, but some say there's a problem</h2><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"></div></div></div>CBD currently exists in a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/hemp-legal-cbd-industry-regulators-fda-warning-2018-12">legal grey area</a>. Still, that hasn't stopped dozens of companies from churning out a range of products proudly made with the ingredient. Whether it's <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/marijuana-cbd-industry-boom-products-2018-7#cbd-coffee-is-a-thing-too-6">coffee</a>, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/heineken-marijuana-beer-taste-photos-lagunitas-2018-8">beer-like drinks</a>, or patches and lotions, there's likely a CBD version out there somewhere. This month, pharmacy giants Walgreens and CVS announced they'd even sell some CBD products.The booming CBD market is valued at roughly $1 billion. Just last month, Wall Street analysts with investment bankm Cowen said they believe that could <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/cbd-marijuana-hemp-billions-health-industry-wall-street-analysts-2019-2">explode to $16 billion</a> within the next six years. Melo agrees."One thing that's become clear is that CBD doesn't taste good," he said.But Melo believes Amyris and Lavvan have a potential solution: putting the CBD they produce into beverages made with their zero-calorie <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/amyris-to-host-launch-of-its-new-zero-calorie-natural-sweetener-in-new-york-on-december-3-2018-1027528084">sweetener</a>.Amyris' sweetener is made using synthetic biology and an ingredient from the stevia plant. Melo is optimistic, however. He expects to have the first commercial production of CBD by early next year."We have a pretty good idea of what we're producing today in the lab," he said.

Los Angeles [US], February 27 (<keyword id="19904948" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ani" source="keywords">ANI</keyword>): According to a study, vapers are susceptible to infection by SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19 and continues to infect people all over the world. The liquid used in electronic cigarettes, known as e-liquid, often contains nicotine, propylene glycol, vegetable glycerin, and flavour compounds. The researchers discovered that propylene glycol/vegetable glycerin, either alone or in combination with nicotine, increased COVID-19 infection via various routes. The results of the study are published in the American Journal of Physiology. The researchers also found that the addition of benzoic acid to e-liquids prevents the infection caused by propylene glycol, vegetable glycerin, and nicotine. "Users who vape aerosols produced from propylene glycol/vegetable glycerin alone or e-liquids with a neutral to basic pH are more likely to be infected by the virus, while users who vape aerosols made from e-liquids with benzoic acid -- an acidic pH -- will have the same viral susceptibility as individuals who do not vape," said <keyword id="20741903" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="rattapol-phandthong" source="keywords">Rattapol Phandthong</keyword>, a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Molecular, Cell and Systems Biology and the research paper's first author. The researchers obtained airway stem cells from human donors to produce a 3D tissue model of human bronchial epithelium. They then exposed the tissues to JUUL and <keyword id="20000547" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="blu" source="keywords">BLU</keyword> electronic cigarette aerosols to study the effect on SARS-CoV-2 infection. They found all tissues showed an increase in the amount of ACE2, a host cell receptor for the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Further, TMPRSS2, an enzyme essential for the virus to infect cells, was found to show increased activity in tissues exposed to aerosols with nicotine. <keyword id="20741904" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="prue-talbot" source="keywords">Prue Talbot</keyword>, a professor of the graduate division and Phandthong's advisor, said e-cigarette users should be cautious about vaping as some products will increase their susceptibility to SARs-CoV-2 infection. "It would probably be best for vapers to quit vaping for the protection of their health and to stop nicotine dependency," she said. "If they cannot stop vaping, it is better to vape aerosols produced from an e-liquid with acidic pH or with benzoic acid to prevent the enhanced SARS-CoV-2 infection caused by nicotine, propylene glycol, and vegetable glycerin. However, inhalation of benzoic acid has its own risk, and data is still limited on this topic." The researchers acknowledge that the relationship between e-cigarettes and SARS-CoV-2 susceptibility is complex. "The complexity is attributed to a wide range of available e-liquids, the chemical composition of each e-liquid, and different models of e-cigarettes," Phandthong said. "Our study only used Classic Tobacco Flavor JUUL e-cigarette and BLU Classic Tobacco e-cigarette. Even with just these two e-cigarettes, we found the aerosols and individual ingredients produced different effects on SARS-CoV-2 infection." Phandthong and <keyword id="20266784" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="talbot" source="keywords">Talbot</keyword> hope the Food and Drug Administration will use their findings to implement regulatory laws on e-cigarette products. "Our findings could also help improve the design of clinical trials involving the use of tobacco products and SARS-CoV-2 infection," Phandthong said. "In the meantime, it is worth bearing in mind that the scientific literature has shown that a vaper who contracted SARS-CoV-2 has more complications during the recovery period and is more likely to develop long COVID-19, which can be serious and last many months post-infection. We hope our findings encourage vapers to stop vaping and discourage non-users from starting to vape." Phandthong acknowledged the team only investigated the initial stage of SARS-CoV-2 infection. "There are many later stages involved in infection, such as viral replication," he said. "Likely, these additional stages can also be affected by inhalation of e-cigarette aerosols." (ANI)

The <keyword id="704367" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="dgci" source="Orion">DGCI</keyword> has asked vaccine manufacturer to submit safety data including the data on adverse event with due analysis every 15 days for the first two months and monthly thereafter upto 5 months, said the source familiar with the development. This development comes after the <keyword id="3923779" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="subject-expert-committee" source="Orion">Subject Expert Committee</keyword> (<keyword id="6362470" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="sec" source="Orion">SEC</keyword>) discussed recommendations for the restricted emergency use of Covaxin in children aged between 2-12 years.
