Tech billionaire <keyword id="6355315" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="elon-musk" source="Orion">Elon Musk</keyword> took to Twitter on Monday to announce that his aerospace manufacturing firm SpaceX will try to catch largest-ever flying object with robot chopsticks.<br /><br />"SpaceX will try to catch largest ever flying object with robot chopsticks. Every single day, this graph fluctuates, sometimes by <keyword id="1088725" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Billions">billions</keyword> of dollars. This point here, near the very bottom of the graph, is roughly $10 billion.</p><p>That's the GDP of Malawi. This was three years ago. This is the market cap of Ford, the GDP of Puerto Rico, the market cap of McDonald's, Kazakhstan's GDP, and this, at the very top, that's $210 billion. That's the current GDP of Greece.</p><p>That's every single thing that Greece produces in a year, one billion tons of tomatoes, 500 million tons of watermelons, all of their cheese, wheat, oil, the entire tourism industry, and every single other good and service across the country.</p><p>But one thing this graph doesn't get across is just how fast this rise has been. Here's the same graph over a much longer period. Again, here's McDonald's, Ford, and Kazakhstan. Compare any of these to Elon Musk's line and you can see his growth is almost vertical. So let's take a closer look to find out what that growth means.</p><p>So to get a better understanding of this graph, it really helps to know what this worth actually is. Musk's wealth is made up mostly of the stocks he owns, the majority of them in Tesla. In fact, if you draw a graph of Tesla's stock over the top of his wealth, you can see it's almost exactly the same.</p><p>So this is just Tesla. For comparison, here are the two biggest car companies in the world, VW and Toyota. You can see see how out of balance this is with production. VW made eight million cars last year, Tesla made 500,000. Putting Musk's wealth back in the same scale, you can see the point where his personal wealth overtook VW in August last year, and briefly overtook the value of Toyota.</p><p>This spike follows a similar trend to past bubbles. For comparison, here's the gold bubble of 1979, the Japanese housing crash, which the country has never recovered from, and the .com bubble in percentage increases. Here's Tesla. So let's go back to just Elon Musk's graph. Getting an exact figure on his worth is difficult, as his private wealth is, well, private, and everyone calculates their estimates slightly differently but to get an understanding of just how rich Elon Musk is, it helps to understand the value of a billion.</p><p>Let's compare distance. Traveling one million miles would get Elon Musk 1/34 of the way to Mars, even at its closest point in orbit. One billion would get you there 29 times, but this is just one billion. Musk's current 176 billion in miles would be 5,104 trips.</p><p>This is just April, 2020, to April, 2021. And over the course of this year, Elon Musk's wealth has gone from 30 billion to $172 billion. That's a rise of 383 million per day. This much, every single day for a year. Even when compared to the recent rapid growth of other US tech billionaires, like <keyword id="45830" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Bill-Gates">Bill Gates</keyword> or <keyword id="191583" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Jeff-Bezos">Jeff Bezos</keyword>, his wealth has really taken off in the last year.</p><p>This specific section though is even more dramatic. This almost vertical line is a five-day period where Elon Musk suddenly became the richest person in the world as his wealth jumped by $39 billion. This amount alone would make him the 35th richest person in the world, just beating Giovanni Ferrero and family, the owners of Nutella.</p><p>That one week of earnings could buy Musk the New York Yankees, the Dallas Cowboys, the LA Lakers, the Toronto Maple Leafs, Manchester United, and once he's run out of big sports teams to buy, enough Boeing 747s to start an airline. But that's just five days of growth.</p><p>His total wealth would buy him a lot more. If Elon Musk was to cash in on this $172 billion worth, he could buy himself 5,030,710 Tesla Model 3s. That's more cars than exists in Sweden. Those cars, bumper to bumper, would take up so much space that they would stretch 11 kilometers long and four kilometers wide, enough to cover almost the whole of Manhattan.</p><p>If he wanted to actually access the cars, he would need to also flatten a large area of New Jersey and Brooklyn to construct the world's largest car park. And if he didn't want to invest in Teslas, he could buy almost four million Bitcoins at $40,000 each, almost 20% of the world's supply, or if he wanted a less volatile investment, a 5.5 meter solid block of 24 karat gold. Gold is really expensive.</p><p>And that $172 billion would be enough to buy him the world's third largest army, bigger than Russia and India's armies combined. But this isn't just a static number. If the trajectory of the last year was to continue, that would make Must a trillionaire in just five years.</p><p>But with his current investments, that would mean that Tesla would likely have to be valued at over $3 trillion by that point. Another 10 years from now and Musk would hit two trillion, more <keyword id="6354840" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="money">money</keyword> than there is currency circulating in the US, and larger than the whole of the current FTSE 100.</p><p>But for Musk to reach this incredible value, Tesla may have a problem keeping up with demand. To maintain this growth, Tesla is going to have to start building a lot of new cars, "20 million of them by 2030," according to Elon Musk, and 20 million cars are going to need a lot of batteries.</p><p>It's predicted that EVs will need the equivalent of 225 billion iPhone 11 batteries by 2030. That's 100 times the amount of iPhones ever sold. These batteries need materials. Here's the estimated supply of lithium in the world, and here's what we're going to need to sustain this growth, which means in just five years time, this demand could completely outstrip supply.</p><p>And soon after that, we could run out of lithium entirely. There are other questions around whether this growth is sustainable, not just feasibly, but ethically too.</p><p>As the extreme wealth of Elon Musk and other billionaires has grown, and the income of the bottom 50% of Americans has shrunk, it's a problem that's hard not to raise. But there's another thing that could slow Elon's rapid growth in future, taxes. The highest marginal tax rate in the US is currently incredibly low, not just compared to other Western countries, but also compared to the US's recent history.</p><p>And here's another interesting correlation. Here's a graph of Union Membership in America, the thing Musk broke labor laws tweeting about a few years ago according to the NLRB, but that's not important for now. Currently, the income disparity between billionaires like Musk and the bottom 50% of Americans is at a similar point to 1930. And that period led to a huge 40% income tax hike, followed shortly by another 13% hike, and another 20% increase during the war.</p><p>And if taxes were to once again follow this trend, this inequality could be addressed before it gets even further out of hand. But with the current plan to raise the top tax rate by just 2.6%, this graph may not be changing for a while. Thanks for watching. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Angelina Wiley said she was shot four times on New Year's Day in Kansas City, Missouri. </li><li>In May, she made a TikTok saying a SKIMS bodysuit saved her life during the shooting.</li></ul><p>A Kansas City woman said a bodysuit from <a href="https://www.insider.com/photos-kim-kardashian-west-career-evolution-2019-2">Kim Kardashian's</a> shapewear company SKIMS saved her life.</p><p>On January 1, 2023, Angelina Wiley was shot in Kansas City, Missouri, while waiting for a Lyft in the early hours of New Year's Day, as CBS affiliate <a href="https://www.kctv5.com/2023/01/03/mother-outraged-following-new-years-day-shooting-westport/">KCTV5 reported</a>.</p><p>In a <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@honeygxd/video/7234610033911172398?_r=1&amp;_t=8dz5nJKgUtG">TikTok</a> that has been viewed over 700,000 times since it was uploaded on May 18, Wiley, 22, said she was shot four times in the Westport area of Kansas City. KCTV5 also reported that an unnamed man was shot during the incident as well and sustained life-threatening injuries. </p><p>According to the outlet, Wiley was taken to the hospital in an ambulance.</p><p>Wiley said in a <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZT8d3ctMq/">TikTok</a> posted in March that the shooter was wearing a ski mask, which has made it difficult to identify them. As of July 2023, no one has been charged in the shooting, according to Wiley's TikTok. When reached for comment, Kansas City Missouri Police Department did not immediately respond to Insider's request for further details.</p><p>Wiley's mother told KCTV5 in January that the incident left her daughter with a ruptured bladder and cracked pelvis. And according to a <a href="https://www.gofundme.com/f/tvtrm3-ninas-road-to-recovery?utm_campaign=p_cp+share-sheet&amp;utm_medium=copy_link_all&amp;utm_source=customer">GoFundMe</a> page Wiley linked to in the caption of her TikTok, and which she most recently updated on July 8, Wiley still has a bullet lodged in her abdomen as a result of the shooting. </p><p>Wiley said in the TikTok video that the injuries sustained in the shooting would have been much worse if she hadn't been wearing SKIMS that night. </p><p>"Kim Kardashian saved my life," Wiley said in her video. "This New Year's, I got shot four times. "I recommend it. I'm definitely gonna buy some more. I mean, I should wear it every day. It's like body armor for women." </p><p>"Call it fate or Jesus, but Imma call it Kim," Wiley added. Wiley also thanked Kardashian in the caption of her video, writing, "no but fr, thanks kim." (Wiley did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.)</p><p>Although bodysuits are popular, it is not safe to wear them for extended periods of time, as the medical director of the Be Well Medical Group Dr. Lisa Ashe told <a href="https://www.shefinds.com/we-asked-a-doc-are-bodysuits-dangerous-to-your-health/#:~:text=%E2%80%9CIt%20can%20also%20lead%20to,and%20ensure%20regular%20bathroom%20breaks." target="_blank" rel="noopener">SheFinds</a> in 2016. Ashe told the outlet that their compression can cause acid reflux, stress incontenence because of the pressure they place on the bladder, and swelling from water retention because people sometimes avoid going to the bathroom when they wear them. Dr. Wakim-Fleming also told the <a href="https://health.clevelandclinic.org/a-doctors-advice-on-wearing-shapewear/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Cleveland Clinic</a> that if shapewear is too tight, it can cause nerve damage or irritate your skin. </p><p>Ashe recommends wearing a bodysuit for no longer than six hours a day and encourages taking ample bathroom breaks when wearing one, even if it's annoying to take on and off. </p><div type="image" title="skims" height="1656" width="2208" msid="101767253" hostid="261" sizebytes="181046"></div><p>As of July 2023, Kardashian and SKIMS have not publicly commented on Wiley's experience. Proud to partner with <a href="https://twitter.com/reliancejio">@reliancejio</a> to increase access for the hundreds of millions in India who don't own a smartphone with our 1st investment of $4.5B from the <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/GoogleForIndia?src=hashtag_click">#GoogleForIndia</a> Digitization Fund."</p><p>A subsidiary of Indian conglomerate Reliance, Jio Platforms owns India's biggest mobile operator Jio, which has a subscriber base of 369.93 million and more than 30% market share.</p><p>Jio Platforms also owns a suite of homegrown internet apps, including Zoom rival JioMeet and music streaming service JioSaavn.</p><p>The funding is part of a slew of Google initiatives in India. CEO Sundar Pichai recently held a video call with Indian prime minister Narendra Modi. And the $4.5 billion cash injection comes from a new <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/google-alphabet-india-health-agriculture-education-tech-ai-sundar-pichai-2020-7?r=US&amp;IR=TIR=T">$10 billion fund that Google plans to invest in India</a>.</p><p>Pichai is also friendly with the founding family behind Reliance Jio, the Ambani family, attending scion Akash Ambani's wedding in Mumbai in 2019.</p><p>Other major tech firms have already invested billions in Jio Platforms. <keyword id="6354576" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="facebook">Facebook</keyword> announced a $5.7 billion investment <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/facebook-invests-in-jio-india-mobile-internet-service-2020-4?r=US&amp;IR=TIR=T">in April</a>. Qualcomm announced this week <a href="https://edition.cnn.com/2020/07/13/tech/qualcomm-reliance-jio-investment-intl-hnk/index.html">it was investing around $100 million</a>, while Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, KKR, Vista Equity Partners, and many others have invested billions in recent months.</p><h2>The 'Jio effect' has had a huge impact on Silicon Valley</h2><p>Jio's rise in India has been meteoric.</p><p>The Reliance subsidiary has brought millions of Indians online for the first time over the past four years by offering free or incredibly cheap 4G data.</p><p>This wave of new internet users has benefited the likes of Google and Facebook, both of which are experiencing saturation in the West and are increasingly looking at Asia and emerging economies to provide their "next billion users." Facebook explicitly called out the positive effect of cheap data plans in emerging economies on its user growth back in 2016, and repeatedly describes India is its fastest-growing market.</p><p><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/reliance-jio-millions-of-indians-online-reshaped-internet-2019-8?r=US&amp;IR=TIR=T">As Business Insider previously reported</a>, one side effect of millions of new Indian users flooding the internet was the dethroning of popular gaming YouTuber PewDiePie as the top creator on the platform. He was replaced by T-Series, an Indian record label that garners hundreds of millions of views by posting Indian music videos to YouTube and is little-known outside the country.</p><p>Meanwhile, Reliance chairman Mukesh Ambani is now the sixth-richest person in the world, per <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/billionaires/">Bloomberg's Billionares Index</a>, surpassing Tesla CEO Elon Musk with a net wealth of $72.4 billion.</p>

He retired undefeated, as the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/the-50-best-selling-pay-per-view-events-boxing-ufc-wrestling-tv-history-2017-8" target="_blank" rel="noopener">king of the pay-per-view format</a>, and with <a href="https://www.forbes.com/profile/floyd-mayweather/#4cd66eef2e8a" target="_blank" rel="noopener">over a billion dollars in career earnings</a>.</p><p>Mayweather's motto in the gym has always been "hard work, dedication," and it looks like he is just as dedicated to spending and shopping as the 41-year-old showed off two shiny, diamond-encrusted custom watches on his Instagram account.</p><p>The first is a diamond and gold watch, which also appears to double-up as a serpentine bracelet that wraps around his forearm.</p><p>The second watch, from luxury Swiss manufacturer Audemars Piguet, has also been customised with countless diamonds.</p><p>Mayweather invited his Instagram followers to guess how big the accompanying ring was. Since then, the facility has produced the company's battery-powered buses and, more recently, electric trucks.</p><p>On Friday, BYD unveiled the factory's new 450,000 square-foot expansion that will allow the company to build 1,500 electric buses annually. BYD will use the expansion to expand further into its new product lines, like electric forklifts and garbage trucks.</p><p><span>Stella Li, president of BYD, said the expansion will allow BYD to deliver 300 buses by mid-2018. The company has so far delivered more than 130 electric buses to 40 customers in North America, like Denver's Regional <keyword id="34991" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="transportation">Transportation</keyword> District and the Los Angeles Metro.</span></p><p><span>The expansion will also add "hundreds" of jobs to the facility that currently employs 700 people.</span></p><p><span>"We are the player to push the industry to the future of zero-emission public transportation," Li said in an interview.</span></p><p>BYD currently sells 10 different bus models, including a new 60-foot bus with 275 miles of range.</p><p>BYD's products compete most closely with Proterra, a Silicon Valley-based electric bus startup that sells a 40-foot bus with a 375-mile range. <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/proterra-sets-1000-mile-range-record-2017-9" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Proterra recently set a 1,000-mile range record</a> for the Calayst E2 bus.</p><p>The Chinese company could also serve as a threat to <a href="http://markets.businessinsider.com/stock/tsla-quote" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Tesla</a>, which will unveil its electric big-rig truck in late October. BYD sold 100,000 electric vehicles in 2016 while Tesla sold 76,000 cars.</p><p>Li said she sees Proterra and Tesla more as partners because they are helping encourage electric vehicle adoption across the US. She also noted that Tesla and BYD compete in very different markets in the US and it remains to be seen whether the company's electric truck can compete with BYD's offerings on price.</p><p>"If you want to make an industry change, only one company cannot do that," she said in an interview. There are also details from 19 corporate entities maintained by governments in tax-haven countries.</p><h2><strong>What is a tax haven? </strong></h2><p>Although there is no generally agreed definition, tax havens offer foreign individuals and businesses a means by which to enjoy minimal tax liability in a location that is consider politically and economically stable. The world's ultrawealthy have 10% of global GDP tucked away in tax havens, Business Insider's Pedro Nicolasi da Costa <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/wealthy-money-offshore-makes-inequality-look-even-worse">wrote in September</a>.</p><p>The Tax Justice Network's <a href="http://www.financialsecrecyindex.com/">financial secrecy index</a>, released every two years, ranks jurisdictions according to their levels of secrecy. According to the report from 2015, an estimated $21 to $32 trillion of tax-free or lightly taxed private finances are located in tax havens.</p><h2><strong>Is it legal?</strong></h2><p>Placing finances into an offshore account is legal, however <a href="http://www.taxjustice.net/topics/inequality-democracy/inequality-tax-havens/">critics of the system, like the Tax Justice Network, say it facilitates illegal activity</a> by providing an extra layer of secrecy to financial transactions.</p><p><a href="https://panamapapers.icij.org/20160403-panama-papers-global-overview.html">Information obtained from the leaked Panama Papers</a> showed offshore accounts were used by Mexican drug traffickers, world leaders, celebrities, and billionares. In some cases, offshore accounts were used to avoid taxes, conceal transactions, and launder money.</p><h2><strong>Who's in the report? </strong></h2><p>The collection of documents in the Paradise Papers include major revelations on politicians and public figures from around the world.</p><p><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/ap-report-commerce-head-has-stake-in-firm-tied-to-putin-orbit-2017-11"><strong>US Department of Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross</strong>,</a> President Donald Trump's main man for trade and manufacturing policy, has a stake in a company that does business with a gas producer partly-owned by Vladimir Putin's son-in-law. A number of the company's major stakeholders have been individually sanctioned by the US. This information further complicates the investigation into potential financial ties between Trump's inner circle and Russia.</p><p><strong><a href="https://projekte.sueddeutsche.de/paradisepapers/politik/queen-profitiert-von-wucher-geschaeften-e882190/">The estate of Queen Elizabeth II </a></strong>was outed by the Paradise Papers as having invested £10 million of the Queen's private money into offshore accounts. The Duchy of Lancaster, which manages the Queen's investments and provides her with an income, held funds in the Cayman Islands and Bermuda. The funds had not been previously disclosed in official Palace accounts, however there are no immediate signs that the investments were illegal.</p><p><strong><a href="https://projekte.sueddeutsche.de/paradisepapers/politik/belasten-engen-berater-von-trudeau-e355666/">Associates of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau</a></strong>, including his chief fundraiser and senior adviser, were involved in moving millions of dollars to offshore accounts. Stephen Bronfman, heir to the Seagram fortune and senior adviser to Trudeau, was revealed to have orchestrated a complex web of entities in the US, Israel and the Cayman Islands.</p><p><a href="https://www.icij.org/investigations/paradise-papers/"><strong>Multinational corporations, like Nike and Apple</strong></a>, were also revealed to have actively invested money into offshore accounts in countries which guaranteed very low tax rates. The European Commission <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/what-just-happened-to-apple-explained-2016-8">ordered Apple to pay $14.5 billion to Ireland</a> last year, on accusations the company paid virtually no taxes in the country.</p><h2><strong>What happens next?</strong></h2><p><a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/financial-secrets-of-super-rich-stolen-offshore-appleby-2017-10">The ICIJ approached Appleby with allegations of wrongdoing</a>, which they deny. <a href="http://www.applebyglobal.com/news/news-2017/media-coverage-of-the-offshore-sector.aspx">Appleby said</a> in a statement it did not tolerate "illegal behaviour," and said the ICIJ's allegations were "unfounded and based on a lack of understanding of the legitimate and lawful structures used in the offshore sector."</p><p>The firm said it had investigated the allegations "thoroughly and vigorously," and was satisfied there was no evidence of wrongdoing "either on the part of ourselves or our clients."</p><p>The Panama Papers led to a series of high-profile scandals, including the <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/icelands-prime-minister-has-resigned-over-secret-investments-revealed-in-the-panama-papers-2016-4">resignation of the Prime Minister of Iceland</a> after it was alleged he had hidden millions of dollars-worth of investments in an offshore company. <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/ap-pakistans-ex-premier-sharif-indicted-on-corruption-charges-2017-10">Pakistan's former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif was indicted on corruption charges in October</a>, stemming from the leaked documents.
