By Harinder Mishra Jerusalem, May 19 () Foreign Ministers of India and Israel have vowed to work together to strengthen and expand the multi-faceted bilateral relationship for a mutually beneficial partnership, days after a new government was sworn in in the Jewish state. Israel's new government was sworn in on Sunday under Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, bringing an end to the longest political deadlock in the country's history which saw a caretaker government in charge for over 500 days and three back-to-back general elections with no clear verdict. The vote of confidence in the new government was passed with 73 votes in favour and 46 against in the Knesset (Israeli parliament). External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Monday congratulated his newly-appointed Israeli counterpart Gabi Ashkenazi, a former Chief of Staff of the Israel Defence Forces. "Mazal Tov @Gabi_Ashkenazi on assuming the post of Israeli Foreign Minister. I look forward to working with you to strengthen our multi-faceted and mutually beneficial partnership", Jaishankar tweeted in Hebrew. Ashkenazi thanked Jaishanker and stressed on strengthening ties in diverse fields between the two countries. "Thank you @DrSJaishankar. I am also looking forward to working with you to strengthen and expand the strong relations between Israel and India in multiple fields", the Israeli foreign minister tweeted in Hindi and English on Monday. Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was among the first few world leaders to congratulate Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu on Sunday on forming the government for a record fifth time, soon after the Knesset approved the new government. "Mazal Tov (congratulations) my friend @netanyahu for forming your fifth government in Israel," Modi wrote on Twitter in Hebrew and English. "Thank you my dear friend the Prime Minister of India! We will continue to strengthen the important relationship between us," Netanyahu responded in Hebrew on Sunday. Netanyahu, 70, and his rival-turned-partner Benny Gantz joined hands to form a coalition government under a power-sharing agreement that would see the latter taking over the premiership on November 17, 2021. The new government, which according to the coalition agreement, will see Gantz replace Netanyahu as the Prime Minister after 18 months. Gantz will serve as Defense Minister until he is scheduled to take over as the Prime Minister in November next year. He will till then have the title of 'Alternate Prime Minister', something that Netanyahu will take over from him after exchanging the baton. The beleaguered Israeli prime minister, who surpassed Israel's first Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion's record of the longest-serving Premier in the country's history last year in July, managed to hold on to his right-wing bloc amid three inconclusive polls to force his main rival Gantz to finally succumb to the demand of a broad national unity government. Gantz campaigned on replacing Netanyahu due to the prime minister's indictment on graft charges, but dropped his opposition to sitting in a government with him after the latest elections again ended with no clear winner, citing the coronavirus pandemic and a desire to avoid a fourth round of voting. The move led to the breakup of the Blue and White alliance, with Gantz being elected as Knesset speaker with the backing of Netanyahu's right-wing religious bloc as they negotiated the terms of the new government. Ahead of the swearing-in ceremony, Likud and Blue and White on Wednesday evening released the policy principles of the new government, as instructed by Israel's Supreme Court. The document said that the government will initially form an emergency cabinet to deal with the coronavirus pandemic and formulate a plan to bring Israel out of the accompanying economic crisis while rolling out a "socioeconomic safety net" and special programmes for citizens who are struggling financially. India, Israel agree to strengthen bilateral ties

The North Korean embassy in <keyword id="6358777" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="New-Delhi">New Delhi</keyword>, <keyword id="3658" type="COUNTRY" weightage="20" keywordseo="India">India</keyword>’s capital, does not look particularly inviting. Housed in a nondescript two-storey building with fading white exteriors , the North Korean embassy is miles away, in all senses, from the swanky Chanakyapuri area where most diplomatic missions are located. The only real sign of movement around the building seems to be the flag fluttering weakly on the roof, which is also the only visible indicator of a North Korean presence. In fact, the building was the subject of <a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/india/comments/4ztjzq/indian_embassy_in_pyongyang_north_koreanp/">a thread</a> on Reddit, a discussion platform, a few years ago. One user remarked, “This looks like an average coaching institute hostel in New Delhi”. The dejected state of the embassy is reflective of the current ties between <keyword id="13473" type="LOCATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="North-Korea">North Korea</keyword> and India, who first established relations in 1973. However, this might all be about to change. Following North Korea’s re-entry into the hallways of international diplomacy - marked by <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2018/04/27/watch-the-north-and-south-korean-leaders-historic-handshake.html">a handshake</a> between the leaders of both the Koreas and <a href="https://edition.cnn.com/2018/05/08/politics/pompeo-north-korea-trip-trump/index.html">visits by the US Secretary of State, </a>Mike Pompeo - India seems ready to renew ties with the country. On May 16th, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) <a href="http://www.mea.gov.in/press-releases.htm?dtl/29899/Visit+of+Minister+of+State+for+External+Affairs+General+Dr+VK+Singh+Retd+to+the+Democratic+Peoples+Republic+of+Korea">announced </a>that V.K. Singh, the minister of state for external affairs, had embarked on a two-day trip to North Korea- the first such visit by an Indian minister in two decades. The two sides agreed to collaborate in a number of spheres, including education, medicine, agriculture and the promotion of cultural practices like yoga. The move was actually precipitated by India’s concern over Pakistan’s supposed access to North Korea’s missile technology, strategically phrased as “proliferation linkages in India’s neighbourhood”. The concerns weren’t unfounded. Pakistan and North Korea <a href="https://thediplomat.com/2016/08/the-long-history-of-the-pakistan-north-korea-nexus/">have a history of cooperation in nuclear technology</a>. For it’s part, North Korea was said to have reassured India that there would be no threats to its security. The pleasantries exchanged are a sign of progress, more so given the MEA’s<a href="https://www.financialexpress.com/india-news/mea-tells-north-korea-missile-programme-impacting-indian-national-security-refrain-from-such-actions/753745/"> condemnation of North Korea’s launch of a nuclear missile</a> in July last year. A few months before, the Indian government had also <a href="http://money.cnn.com/2017/05/01/news/north-korea-india-trade-ban/index.html">cut all trade ties </a>with the country, except for food and medicine, in compliance with a UN resolution. Trade between the two countries totalled $133.4 million in 2016-17, a paltry figure for India, but not insignificant for North Korea, since the former was it’s third-largest trading partner. The visit by V.K. Singh is a tentative start to a renewed relationship. It could be given an even greater impetus if the proposed summit between <keyword id="6354484" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Donald-Trump">Donald Trump</keyword> and Kim Jong Un <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/north-korea-threatens-to-cancel-summit-with-trump-over-military-ruckus-with-south-korea/articleshow/64182441.cms">not only goes through</a>, but proves to be successful in encouraging the denuclearisation of North Korea. Perhaps then, the North Korean embassy in Delhi will get a makeover.

India and North Korea are hitting the restart button on their relationship

Ganguly Hopes India-Pakistan Resume Bilateral Cricket Ties

By K J M Varma Beijing, Jun 23 () Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said Russia, India and China should correctly handle and properly deal with "sensitive issues" in bilateral ties to safeguard the overall interests of their relations. Wang's remarks at a virtual conference of the foreign ministers of Russia, India and China (RIC) trilateral came amidst a violent clash between the militaries of India and China that led to the killing of 20 Indian soldiers in the Galwan Valley on June 15. In his address to RIC Foreign Ministers, Wang said the three countries should "correctly handle and properly deal with sensitive factors in bilateral relations and safeguard the overall interests of mutual relation," without directly referring to the current round of India-China military tensions along the Line of Actual Control, (LAC). External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov were also present in the meeting. He backed Russia's proposal to hold the first RIC defence ministers meeting to enhance the level of defence and security cooperation. Wang emphasised that China, Russia, and India are big countries that insist on strategic autonomy, a press release issued by the Chinese Foreign Ministry said. He said the three nations should grasp the opportunity to enhance overall cooperation. "Starting from the common interests of promoting the development of the three countries and safeguarding the world's peaceful development, we should correctly treat and properly handle the sensitive factors in bilateral relations and maintain the overall situation of mutual relations," he said. "We should make good use of the overall momentum of cooperation in which the three countries are partners and opportunities for each other proceed from the common interests of promoting the development and revitalisation of the three countries and safeguarding the world peace and development," he said. He said the three counties should adhere to multilateralism and improve global governance, resolutely defend the victory of the Second World War and promote the democratisation and the rule of law in international relations. They should maintain the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, ensure the authority and effectiveness of the UN, and strengthen communication and coordination within the UN framework. They should build an open world economy, maintain the multilateral trading system based on the World Trade Organisation (WTO) and ensure the safe and smooth operation of the global industrial supply chain. The three nations should improve the cooperation level of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) in various fields and maintain unity and cooperation of the BRICS ( Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) countries. he three countries should strengthen the cooperation against the COVID-19 pandemic and work together to overcome it by carrying out mutual exchanges and lessons learned from their experiences to carry out epidemic information sharing, drug and vaccine R&amp;D (Research and Development) cooperation. The three nations should explore the establishment of a joint defence and joint control mechanism and establish a "fast channel" for the exchange of personnel and a "green channel" for logistics, he said. The three countries should jointly promote international anti-epidemic cooperation, resolutely resist stigmatising the epidemic situation, and resolutely oppose making political essays in the name of anti-epidemic. They should support the World Health Organisation (WHO), promote the improvement of global public health governance and build a community of human health, he said. China has come under increasing global pressure over lack of transparency in its handling of the coronavirus pandemic, which originated from the central Chinese city of Wuhan. Wang suggested a tripartite joint force to perfect the cooperation mechanism. Russia, India, China should properly deal with 'sensitive issues' in bilateral ties: Wang Yi

 As reported by Economic Times, the probe revealed that the gunmen of Gurdaspur attack came. This is the prime reasons why the <keyword id="42498" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="RSS">RSS</keyword>, the BJP’s ideological partner, is not supporting the decision taken by the central government. 
 
If sources are to be believed, RSS wants the government to adopt a retaliatory approach to bring down the training camps allegedly run by Pakistan’s ISI in PoK region. 
 
The top government officials, requesting anonymity, informed ET that the party, under pressure from RSS and international expectations, has decided to precede with the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=NSA">National Security Advisor (NSA)</a>-level talks with Pakistan, but will keep its options to strike back open. 
 
Explaining the government’s approach, a senior official from the security establishment said, "It will be more like a carrot and stick approach." 
 The official further added, "The talks have to proceed. There has to be at least one round since PM <keyword id="6354642" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Modi">Modi</keyword> and <keyword id="6576" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nawaz-Sharif">Nawaz Sharif</keyword> agreed at Ufa. Subsequent dialogue will depend on the outcome of this round of talks and also Pak's attitude." 
 
The official also informed about the possibilities of calling NSA-level talks if any sign of trouble comes into notice from Pakistan’s side, adding that India will keep its options open and choose the place and intensity of a retaliatory strike. 
 
Sources in the government admitted to have been pressurized by the Sangh, but said that they were positive about RSS’s support to whatever the Centre will decide. 
 
A senior BJP leader however said, "They have conveyed their views to the government time and again. The RSS has not been happy with the way Modi sarkar has been dealing with Pakistan right from the beginning, but they are allowing it space to work out the best possible approach."

RSS unhappy with Centre’s call to continue bilateral talks with Pakistan

India and the US are enhancing their military-to-military ties and in this regard, both the nations have decided to hold more bilateral exercises. 
 
India’s Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar and his US counterpart Ashton Carter took this decision and during a joint news conference said the Indian Air Force will also participate in the multilateral Red Flag exercise in April-May 2016. 
 
Parrikar informed Carter about India's decision to participate in the Rim-of-the-Pacific (RIMPAC) multilateral naval exercise in 2016. 
 
Carter announced US participation in the International Fleet Review of the Indian Navy at Visakhapatnam in February 2016. 
 
"Today, India is conducting more military exercises with the US than with any other country," said Parrikar. 
 
"We discussed the importance of expanding our military engagements, from the annual Malabar naval exercise this year, to India's participation in the Rim-of-the-Pacific exercise next year. And return, for the first time in eight years to Red Flag, the premier air-to-air combat exercise," Carter said.

India, US are warming up military ties, to increase bilateral exercises

Finance Minister Nirmala Sithraman, External Affairs Minister Jaishankar, Commerce and Industry Minister <keyword id="19895367" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="piyush-goyal" source="keywords">Piyush Goyal</keyword> and Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw represented the Indian side in Singapore. "The Ministers reviewed the progress of India - Singapore Strategic Partnership, particularly under the pillars of Digitalization, Skills Development, Sustainability, Healthcare and Medicine, identified during the 1st meeting of ISMR, held in New Delhi on September 17, 2022," the statement read. They deliberated on ideas to expand bilateral cooperation and decided to add two new pillars, Advanced Manufacturing and Connectivity for further strengthening bilateral cooperation. The Ministers agreed to hold the next round of ISMR in India at a mutually convenient time. During their visit, the Indian Ministers also called on Singapore President, Tharman Shanmugaratnam, and Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong. "India and Singapore are important partners of each other. The visit reaffirmed the commitment of both sides to further strengthen their multifaceted partnership," MEA added. Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong has called the India-Singapore Ministerial Dialogue an important platform for strengthening bilateral ties. Trump lashes out at India — yet again — over retaliatory tariffs

India’s prime minister <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword> was in <keyword id="6356662" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="singapore">Singapore</keyword> recently on a two-day visit to attend a string of regional economic and trade summits in a bid to strengthen India’s ties with ASEAN countries and with the wider Indo-Pacific region. He attended and held a series of meetings at the East Asia Summit, the Asean-India informal meet and the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) Summit. Here are the highlights of his visit. 1. The prime minister participated in a bilateral meeting with US Vice President <keyword id="264959" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mike-Pence">Mike Pence</keyword> on the sidelines of the East Asia Summit. Pence and Modi reportedly held discussions on strengthening security partnership and cooperating on counter-terrorism issues.

 2. Modi attended the 13th East Asia Summit, which is held annually by leaders of 18 countries in the East Asian, Southeast Asian and South Asian regions including Russia and the United States. He reportedly addressed multilateral cooperation and economic and cultural ties among member nations.

 3. PM attended the second meet of Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) and pushed for an agreement through multilateral and bilateral talks among the member countries. The RCEP is a proposed free-trade agreement between ASEAN and six Asia-Pacific states with which the regional bloc has existing Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) -- namely China, India, Japan, South Korea, Australia and New Zealand.

Attending Singapore <keyword id="6982825" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="fintech-festival">Fintech festival</keyword>, he reportedly had many high profile meetings including with Singapore prime minister <keyword id="5883" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Lee-Hsien-Loong">Lee Hsien Loong</keyword>.

 7. Modi also launched APIX (Application Programming Interface Exchange), a global fintech platform with Deputy PM of Singapore, T. Shanmugaratnam. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s decision to accept the US President Barack Obama’s invitation for bilateral talks during the United Nations’ General Assembly is an opportunity to reset the Indo-US relations. 
 
Modi’s move shows he is willing to let bygones be bygones and will not let the decade-long visa ban come in the way of India’s foreign relations. It also shows that both countries can now focus on trade and bilateral ties, moving on from the bitterness generated due to the Devyani Khobragade episode. 
 
In spite of the nuclear deal and the talk of ‘strategic partnership’ during the rule of the former UPA government, Indo-US ties have failed to live up to the high expectations. However, Modi’s business-friendly image and his agenda of economic reforms may go a long way in boosting trade and investment. India’s economic revival needs big-ticket US investment. 
 
The US, too, needs to take India on board for its South Asia policy. The withdrawal of the US forces from Afghanistan will create a security vacuum that would be of great concern to India. Therefore, both countries need to put their heads together to formulate a comprehensive security strategy for the region.

Modi-Obama Meet: An Opportunity To Reset Indo-US Ties

External Affairs Minister <keyword id="491850" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="S-Jaishankar">S Jaishankar</keyword> on Tuesday held talks with US Secretary of State <keyword id="3109665" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mike-Pompeo">Mike Pompeo</keyword> in Tokyo, focusing on various aspects of bilateral ties and ways to ensure stability in the Indo-Pacific region. Jaishankar and Pompeo are in the Japanese capital to attend a ministerial meeting of the Quad or Quadrilateral coalition comprising India, the US, Australia and Japan. "Began my Tokyo visit with a bilateral meeting with @SecPompeo. Pleased to see the progress of our partnership in so many fields. Will work together for stability and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific," Jaishankar tweeted. It is learnt that Jaishankar and Pompeo also deliberated on overall ties including evolving security scenario around India. In November 2017, the four countries gave shape to the long-pending proposal of setting up the "Quad" to develop a new strategy to keep the critical sea routes in the Indo-Pacific free of any influence. The first meeting of foreign ministers of the four countries under the 'Quad' framework had taken place in New York in September 2019. The second ministerial meeting of the Quadrilateral coalition on Tuesday is expected to collectively affirm the importance of a free, open and inclusive Indo-Pacific in the backdrop of growing Chinese assertiveness in the region. During his two-day visit to Tokyo, Jaishankar will also hold talks with his Japanese counterpart Toshimitsu Motegi and Australian Foreign Minister Marise Payne India is also expanding bilateral cooperation with Japan, the US and Australia in the Indo-Pacific region. The US has been pushing for a greater role for India in the Indo-Pacific which is seen by many countries as an effort to contain China's growing clout in the region.
