While the mortifying effects of the pandemic continue to hold our country to ransom, there is another rather fatal infection lingering in the background that doctors are witnessing in dozens of <keyword id="8763838" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="covid-19">COVID-19</keyword> patients, and that is called Mucormycosis. Also known as Black Fungus, this rare fungal infection is primarily contracted in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of a hospital and can be pretty fatal — from losing vision to losing your life. But this is not a new phenomenon. Dr Vipin M. Vashishtha — former convener, IAP Committee on Immunisation, and paediatrician at Mangla Hospital and Research Centre, <keyword id="67012" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bijnor">Bijnor</keyword>, UP — tells <keyword id="824043" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Business-Insider">Business Insider</keyword> that “Many ICUs where prolonged oxygen is being used with improper sterilisation and where tap water instead of distilled water is used, this and other fungal infections can emerge.” Forty cases of the life-threatening infection have been detected in <a href="https://www.indiatoday.in/coronavirus-outbreak/story/black-fungus-mucormycosis-detected-covid19-survivors-8-lose-eyesight-surat-fungal-infection-symptoms-1799971-2021-05-07">Surat</a>, Gujarat, of which eight have lost their eyesight. In Delhi’s Sir <keyword id="237993" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ganga-Ram-Hospital">Ganga Ram Hospital</keyword> (SGRH), six <a href="https://zeenews.india.com/health/delhi-hospital-reports-cases-of-covid-triggered-mucormycosis-here-s-all-you-need-to-know-about-it-2360268.html">patients</a> with Mucormycosis have been admitted in the past few days. Sometimes called Zygomycosis, this infection caused by fungi belonging to the order <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3286196/">Mucorales, </a>targets patients whose immunity is low. It is caused by various kinds of fungi that are often found in <a href="https://medlineplus.gov/ency/article/000649.htm">decaying</a> organic matter like spoiled bread, fruit, and vegetables, and in this case, the devices that are providing much-required oxygen to patients. And despite aggressive therapy, the overall mortality rate is high. The symptoms usually start revealing themselves a day or two after recovery. Early symptoms include greyish-black crusting/pigmentation in the nose or oral cavity that may enlarge and block the nasal cavity. Another symptom could be spores of fungus depositing near the eyes that leads to ocular swelling. Some patients may get lesions over the cheeks. At a later stage, this fungus can make its way to the brain. It is quite a severe disease, and fatality can go up to 50%. Treatments include antifungal drugs like Amphotericin-B that are given intravenously and other supportive therapy. The fungus thrives in hospitals where there is improper sterilisation of ventilator circuits and oxygen pipes. “Since, in the treatment of severe covid patients who need prolonged oxygen therapy through high-flow oxygen given through nostrils, via a ventilator, Bilevel Positive Airway Pressure (BiPAP), non-rebreathing mask (<keyword id="3383136" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="NRM">NRM</keyword>), etc., the risk of getting this opportunistic infection increases,” Dr Vashishtha adds. At a place where our healthcare situation is grim, to say the least, contracting this rare fungal infection that could be avoided is yet another reminder that our healthcare system has entirely collapsed. Dr Vashishtha stresses that “we must educate healthcare workers, paramedics, and ICU technicians to frequently change flow meters’ water and sterilise oxygen tubing. A potentially lethal fungal disease is creeping into recovering Covid-19 patients, and the prognosis is not good

<keyword id="19894922" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Uttar-Pradesh" source="keywords">Uttar Pradesh</keyword> has strong and established women leaders but, ironically, the majority of this '<keyword id="19911646" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nari-Shakti" source="keywords">Nari Shakti</keyword>' does not belong to this state. Barring a few, most of the women leaders have come from other states and after contesting several elections, they have consolidated their position in Uttar Pradesh. Senior Congress leader <keyword id="19935990" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sonia-Gandhi" source="keywords">Sonia Gandhi</keyword> leads the brigade of political talent imported from outside Uttar Pradesh. A native of Italy who was living in New Delhi with her in-laws, the Gandhi bahu made her political debut from Amethi in 1999 and then contested and won the Rae Bareli seat from 2004 to 2019. Sonia Gandhi began campaigning in Amethi from 1984 when her husband Rajiv Gandhi made his political debut. When Sonia Gandhi finally took a plunge in politics after the former Prime Minister's demise, she chose the family turf, Amethi. The former Congress President was at one time seen as a prime ministerial candidate, though she never claimed the position. Another woman politician who was seen as a prospective prime ministerial candidate is BSP supremo, <keyword id="19897516" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mayawati" source="keywords">Mayawati</keyword>. Mayawati was born in Delhi but her political 'karambhoomi' became Uttar Pradesh when the first SP-BSP government came into existence in 1993 in the state. Circumstances propelled Mayawati into the Uttar Pradesh chief minister's chair in 1995 and over the years, she has emerged as a politician who cannot be ignored. Actor-turned-politician, <keyword id="19968072" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Hema-Malini" source="keywords">Hema Malini</keyword>, who is seeking her third term from Mathura, belongs to Tamil Nadu and has spent most of her life in Mumbai. She contested and won the 2014 and 2019 elections from Mathura. Hema Malini calls herself 'Krishna ki gopi' and claims to have a divine connect with Mathura. Among others in this list is Smriti Irani, who is seeking her second term from Amethi and originally belongs to Delhi. However, after winning Amethi in 2019, she calls herself 'Amethi ki bitiya'. She has even built her home in Gauriganj in Amethi and is well versed with local politics and the local people. Maneka Gandhi, who originally belongs to Delhi, is the senior-most MP among these women, having won her first election in 1989 on a Janata Dal ticket. She later joined the BJP and has always chosen Uttar Pradesh to contest elections - first Pilibhit and then Sultanpur. Jaya Prada, another actor-turned-politician, was born in Rajahmundry, Andhra Pradesh but chose Uttar Pradesh to kickstart her political career even though she had earlier joined the TDP. Jaya Prada successfully contested the Rampur Lok Sabha seat in 2004 and 2009 elections on a Samajwadi Party ticket. Later, she joined the BJP in 2019. Dimple Yadav, senior SP leader and wife of Akhilesh Yadav, originally belongs to Uttarakhand but made Uttar Pradesh her home after her marriage to Akhilesh. Dimple Yadav began her career by losing a bypoll to Raj Babbar of the Congress from Firozabad in 2009 but won the Kannauj seat in a 2012 bye-election. She won the Kannauj seat in 2014 but lost in 2019. However, Dimple Yadav won the Mainpuri bye-election after the demise of Mulayam Singh Yadav in 2022. Among all these women leaders, it is only Union Minister Anupriya Patel of Apna Dal (S) who was born and brought up in Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh. Interestingly, even in the past, several women leaders who made a mark in Indian politics were born outside Uttar Pradesh but chose to contest polls from the state. Former Lok Sabha Speaker, Meira Kumar, made her debut in politics when she won a bye-election from Bijnor in 1985. Meira Kumar, who is the daughter of late veteran politician Jagjivan Ram, was born in Bihar. Former Delhi Chief Minister, late Sheila Dikshit, won her first election from Kannauj in 1984. She was born in Kapurthala in Punjab. Freedom fighter Sucheta Kripalani, the first woman Chief Minister in India, who headed the Uttar Pradesh government, also belonged to Punjab but won the Assembly polls from Mehdawal in Sant Kabir Nagar. --IANS amita/rad

There are innumerable cases of people having two masters' degrees but rarely does one find someone doing a double <keyword id="6401882" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="intermediate" source="Orion">intermediate</keyword> and that too, after a gap of almost 50 years. Mohammad Naki of Bijnor, had passed intermediate in 1972 as a humanities student when he was just 17. Fifty years later, this 67-year-old man cleared his intermediate exams again-- this time in the science stream--because he wanted to pursue his dream of becoming a <keyword id="174680" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="pharmacist" source="Orion">pharmacist</keyword>. "I was unable to pursue further education and had to start working early because family responsibilities came in the way," he told reporters. Naki has scored 72 per cent marks, which is even more that what his two granddaughters, Muskan(17) and Suhana (15) have got in their class 12 and class 10 exams respectively. "My family was not financially sound. After taking intermediate exams in the arts stream, I cleared some Urdu exams that were 'equivalent' to graduation and started working as a clerk at an inter-college in my native village. I worked there for around 10 years but my salary was very low. I had to eventually resign," he said. After resigning, Naki bought nine bighas of agricultural land and started growing flower crops. He used the flowers to work as a decorator. He later also set up an ayurveda practice. "My interest in ayurveda grew and I eventually started a small practice in Gurugram, where my son worked as a supplier of electrical goods. However, there was a raid on my street by health authorities and I was told I could not pursue the practice without a degree. I then went back to my village and met Neha Khan, a teacher at a local school, who guided me. She told me that I needed to secure a degree in naturopathy to become a hakeem. I therefore moved to Banda district and got a four-year diploma in natural yogic science," he said. After acquiring the diploma, Naki decided to study further and become a pharmacist. However, when he visited an Amroha-based pharmacy college, he was told that he needed to clear intermediate exams in the science stream, not humanities, to enrol. "This is when I decided to clear the tests again," he said. Naki said he was "publicly ridiculed" when he appeared for his exams at Bijnor's Kelanpur inter-college this year. "Students laughed at me and asked me what such an old person like me was doing there. But not everyone was negative. Some police personnel clicked my pictures and told me they would show it to their children to inspire them," he said. He further said that his mother, 100-year-old Aneesa, was 'overjoyed' after learning about his results. "She showered me with her blessings and some money," he said.
