Pushpam Priya Choudhary from London School of Economics launches her political party in Bihar

Michael Jensen, CEO of Carlsberg India, has termed India as the most difficult market in the world, and you can’t blame him for that, since Jensen has personally experienced how politics can make business run on its fingers, making investors vary of future projects. 
 It was three years ago that <keyword id="6388010" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Bihar-CM">Bihar CM</keyword> <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Nitish-Kumars-government-imposes-13-5-tax-on-luxury-items-including-samosa-and-kachori/articleshow/50563854.cms">Nitish Kumar</a> had wooed Carlsberg to invest in the state, thus convincing it to set up a $25 million plant near Patna in 2014. However, after he was <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Nitish-Kumar-takes-oath-as-Bihar-CM/articleshow/49858253.cms">re-elected </a>last year, he went on to ban liquor in the state, which led to the company’s revenues falling and forcing it to consider pulling out, since there was no backup plan for this unexpected move. 
 
"It was a sizeable market and investment but they decided to do prohibition in 12 hours," Jensen told ET. 
 
Other than Carlsberg, Diageo Plc, United Breweries and Molson Coors are also worried about the ban since they have been running more than 70 distilleries and breweries in Bihar for over a decade now, which is an ideal market for these liquor companies, offering an abundance of raw materials (barley and wheat) and cheap labour. 
 
In Bihar, sale of alcohol has been banned since March this year, fulfilling the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Banned-Alcohol-in-Bihar-to-be-banned-April-2016-onwards-CM-Nitish-Kumar-announces/articleshow/49934345.cms">promise </a>that Kumar made during his election campaign.

"Our medium-term intent is actually (to) exit the state of Bihar from all manufacturing and related activities," United Spirits CEO Anand Kripalu was quoted saying in an investor call. "It is about just over 1% of our total business in terms of revenue and probably something similar in terms of profit right. So we believe, while it is an important state in terms of its contribution, it is not that material to our total business." 
 
The industry is, however, maintaining some hopes since sector lobby groups have challenged the ban in the Patna High court. 
 
"We are fighting against the unjust ruling to ban all liquor instead of just country and illegal liquor," said All India Brewers Association Director General Shobhan Roy. "Our breweries are running full capacity and we have claimed about 400 crore compensation for existing inventories and machinery."

Tejashwi, who holds important portfolios such as road construction, building construction and Backward/Extremely Backward Classes welfare department, spends his time in his ministry office. 
 
He wants to put across a message that he is a leader and loves to wear a blue or black jacket, white kurta and white pyjama, besides slip-in shoes. 
 
People close to him say that Tejashwi does his homework well before holding meetings. 
 
The deputy chief minister will soon meet road transport and highways minister Nitin Gadkari for highways projects in Bihar. "I earnestly seek your valued and whole-hearted support for integrated development of road network in Bihar," Tejashwi recently wrote in a letter to Gadkari.

Bihar deputy CM Tejashwi Yadav is not a daddy’s boy. Here’s why

<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Nitish+Kumar">Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar</a> took offence at <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Narendra+Modi">Prime Minister Narendra </a><a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Narendra+Modi">Modi</a>’s ‘DNA’ remark and has asked him to withdraw it. 
 
Kumar said Modi’s remark was an insult to large section of the people of the state and beyond. 
 
While addressing a rally in Muzaffarpur on July 25, Modi remembered the way Kumar had invited him to dinner and later cancelled the invitation. 
 
Modi said that Kumar had not only disrespected him but also a 'mahadalit' like former Chief Minister <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=jitan+ram+manjhi">Jitan Ram Manjhi</a>. 
 
"There seems to be some problem in his DNA because the DNA of democracy is not like that. In democracy you respect even your political rivals," Modi had said at the rally. 
 
Today, Kumar wrote an open letter to Modi, which was released on <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=facebook">Facebook</a> and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=twitter">Twitter</a>. 
 
"Most of us feel these statements have gone beyond questioning my own descent. They have disrespected the lineage of our people and denigrated the great legacy of the state," the letter stated. 
 
"This also gives credence to the feeling that perhaps you and your party hold a prejudice against the people of Bihar. I wonder how come the gravity of such statements repeatedly miss your alert conscience," said Kumar. 
 
Kumar said Modi’s comment was unbecoming of the office he holds. 
 
"I have no doubt that this gesture of yours (withdrawing the DNA remark) would go a long way in assuaging the sentiments of people and would further enhance the respect people have for you," he said. 
 
Modi is likely to address a rally in Gaya on August 9. 
 
Kumar also reminded Modi that this was not the first time such remarks were made by <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=BJP">BJP</a> leaders. 
 
"Earlier, your colleague and BJP leader Nitin Gadkari had said that casteism is in the DNA of Bihar. Interestingly, these are the same people who reposed their faith in you and contributed towards electing you to the highest office of the country with an overwhelming majority," he added.

Bihar CM Nitish Kumar raises objection on Modi’s ‘DNA’ remark, writes open letter to him

Patna, Former Bihar CM <keyword id="20102182" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="rabri-devi" source="keywords">Rabri Devi</keyword> on Monday filed nomination papers for election to the state legislative council, besides three other candidates of her RJD and one of alliance partner CPI(ML) Liberation. Three candidates of the BJP, including former minister and state unit chief Mangal Pandey, also filed their nomination papers. Rabri Devi reached the Vidhan Sabha secretariat along with her husband Lalu Prasad, the RJD president, and sons <keyword id="19916246" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tejashwi-yadav" source="keywords">Tejashwi Yadav</keyword> and <keyword id="20196796" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tej-pratap-yadav" source="keywords">Tej Pratap Yadav</keyword>. The other RJD candidates who filed nomination papers were Abdul Bari Siddiqui, Syed Faisal Ali and Urmila Thakur. CPI(ML) Liberation's Shashi Yadav also filed nomination papers. Tejashwi Yadav, a former Deputy CM and the leader of multi-party <keyword id="19941767" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="mahagathbandhan" source="keywords">Mahagathbandhan</keyword>, told reporters, "It is a matter of delight that our coalition has fielded three women." While Yadav's mother is seeking re-election to the upper house for a third consecutive term, Siddiqui, a veteran leader, has had a three-year-long stint in the council in the 1990s, besides having been elected to the assembly several times. The other Mahagathbandhan candidates will be making their debut in the Vidhan Parishad. CPI(ML) Liberation legislative party leader Mehboob Alam told reporters, "Let Chirag make clear his stand. His late father Ram Vilas Paswan had been our ally. If he, too, decides to junk the BJP, we shall welcome him." Congress legislative party leader Shakil Ahmed Khan, who was also present on the occasion, was asked about some leaders of his party expressing dissatisfaction that "despite having 17 MLAs", it was not fielding a candidate for legislative council polls. Notably, elections are being held for 11 seats, the terms of which are to end in May. Of these, one seat was held by senior Congress leader Prem Chandra Mishra. However, Khan said, "Our party is democratic and all people are allowed to express their opinions. But this is not an issue. We got our candidate elected to the Rajya Sabha recently. After the Mahagathbandhan candidates, it was the turn of Mangal Pandey, besides BJP debutantes Anamika Singh Patel and Lal Mohan Gupta to file their nomination papers. Narendra Modi, Sonu Sood and Anand Mahindra top Indian Twitter engagement in October 2020, shows report

Bhubaneswar, Feb 28 () Immediate revision of coal royalty and a special economic package for speedy development of the region were among the major demands raised at the Eastern Zonal Council (EZC) meeting chaired by Union Home Minister Amit Shah here on Friday. The meeting, attended by Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik and his West Bengal and Bihar counterparts Mamata Banerjee and Nitish Kumar, respectively, was skipped by Jharkhand chief minister Hemant Soren. Soren, who was unable to attend the meeting, deputed state's Finance Minister Rameshwar Oraon to the meet. Though no reason for Soren's absence at the meeting was cited, it was perhaps because of the commencement of the month-long budget session of the Jharkhand Assembly, sources said. It is not known what Amit Shah said at the meeting, but chief ministers raised issues concerning their states as well as for the region during the meeting. Patnaik, who is the vice-chairman of the council and host, batted for the entire east zone and demanded a special economic package for the region, saying the states lag in many sectors despite being endowed with natural and mineral resources. Patnaik also urged that Odisha be declared a "Special Focus State" in view of frequent natural disasters faced by the state and its vulnerability to natural calamity. All the participant states demanded that coal royalty, which has not been revised since 2012, be hiked forthwith. All the four eastern states - Odisha, West Bengal, Bihar and Jharkhand are coal bearing areas. Lamenting delay in revision in coal royalty, Patnaik said there is an urgent need to revise royalty on coal and also to share proceeds of clean energy cess with the state government. He said the entire eastern region lags in teledensity, railway density and banking density and, therefore, needs to be given a special economic package for speeding up Infrastructural Development of the zone. Emphasising that this zone contributes maximum to the mineral wealth of the country and in turn manufacturing and energy security, he said the fruits of this wealth should boost economic growth of this region and its people. "Our Regions have some of the largest scheduled areas of the country. I reiterate my demand for inclusion of Ho, Bhumij and Mundari languages in the Eighth Schedule of Constitution, the Chief Minister said. He thanked the Union government for supporting the state during cyclone Fani last year. After the meeting, Mamata Banerjee told reporters that she highlighted West Bengal issues at the EZC meet where she expressed concern that her state did not get require assistance during natural calamities like cyclone Fani and Bulbul. She also said Bengal has been neglected in many matters and the state should get its due share in the central pool. "We have not got Rs 50,000 crore from the Centre," the chief minister said. Banerjee said she also raised other issues related to her state like delay in GST compensation payment, lowered share in the devolution and other issues hitting the states interest. Issues relating to development of the states in the region, the need for coal royalty revision, strengthening of infrastructure were also discussed at the EZC meeting, she said. Apart from the security scenario and vexed Left Wing Extremism (LWE) menace, the EZC meeting also discussed heinous crimes and rail link projects, official sources said. Addressing the meet, Bihar CM Nitish Kumar reiterated the demand for grant of special category status to the state. He asserted that despite achieving double digit growth rate in past few years, Bihar is lagging behind on major indices of development like poverty line, per capita income and industrial as well the social and physical infrastructure vis-a-vis the national average while pressing for the special category status demand to the Union Home minister. Kumar also urged West Bengal and Jharkhand, sharing border with Bihar, to initiate strong measures to stop smuggling of liquor in the state, where prohibition is in force since 2016. He also urged the Centre to share the expense in deployments of central security forces for dealing with the naxal problem with the state, which at present is solely bearing the cost. Kumar said curbing naxal menace was joint responsibility of the Centre as well the state while buttressing the demand. Issues such as inter-state water rows, power transmission lines, royalty and operationalization of coal mines, land &amp; forest clearance of rail projects, investigation of heinous offences and cattle smuggling across countrys borders figured during the ECZ meet, sources said.
