In a bid to take on its e-commerce rivals such as <keyword id="6354742" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Flipkart">Flipkart</keyword> and <keyword id="18635" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Amazon">Amazon</keyword>, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=kishore+biyani&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Kishore Biyani</a> is gathering all his might to race past them. 
 
In a new initiative, Biyani-led <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=future+group&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Future Group</a> is rolling out discounts for its customers like never before and launching an eight-day discount scheme at <keyword id="6357823" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Big-Bazaar">Big Bazaar</keyword>, India’s largest supermarket chain. 
 
Under ‘Monthly Bachat Bazaar’ (Monthly Savings Scheme), customers who buy items for Rs 2,500 will get cash bonuses and vouchers across segments worth Rs 2,000 from June onward. 
 
To increase footfall, the vouchers will be redeemable for the rest of the month. 
 
Biyani told his employees about a customer-reward system, calling it the next wave of growth for the 270 or so Big Bazaar outlets. 
 
"We wanted to bring together all the might of Big Bazaar in an effort to get new customers and at the same time reward existing ones. Also, this will influence shoppers to look for options across categories instead of just food and groceries,” Sadashiv Nayak, CEO of Big Bazaar, told ET. 
 Not only Big Bazaar, but Reliance Fresh and <keyword id="6369697" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Godrej">Godrej</keyword> Nature's Basket have also launched multiple initiatives to grab the market share. 
 
"Online grocery retailing might work mostly at urban centres but one needs significant scale to make it work profitably. There is still five to 10 years before online players get into smaller towns with grocery retailing. Big Bazaar may be impacted to an extent but not exponentially," Ruchi Sally, director at Elargir Solutions, a retail consultancy, told ET.

Big Bazaar is gathering all might to race past e-commerce rivals; is launching 8-day discount scheme

At a time when India’s <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=food+startup&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">food startup</a> sector looks gloomy, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Coca-Cola&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Coca-Cola</a> India’s former marketing head <keyword id="1457486" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Shripad-Nadkarni">Shripad Nadkarni</keyword> has done the unthinkable. He has joined hands with three other former executives of major consumer goods firms to set up <keyword id="4008149" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="food-startup">food startup</keyword> Fingerlix which will sell fresh, ready-to-cook food items like curries, batter and mixes. 
 Fingerlix is the brainchild of Shripad Nadkarni (Director), Shree Bharambe (CEO), Varun Khanna (VP-Sales &amp; Operations) and Abhijit Berde (Product Development &amp; Executive Chef). With experience in companies like <keyword id="6391475" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Coca-Cola">Coca-Cola</keyword>, J&amp;J and Colgate besides consulting experience, the team is looking to leverage their extensive experience in the food sector. 
 
"The ready-to-cook sector is a white space we're hoping to address; we are addressing convenience and freshness with the brand," Nadkarni, director at Maverix Platforms, promoter of Fingerlix said. 
 Fingerlix's cuisine, at present a mix of Indian and Italian food with a shelf life of five days, would be sold across modern and general trade and hyper local deliveries. The brand is being retailed in <keyword id="6357823" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Big-Bazaar">Big Bazaar</keyword>, Reliance Retail and Hypercity stores in Mumbai. The startup also has a website, mobile app (Android &amp; iOS) and call centre services with home delivery. As for its products, all Fingerlix products are preservative-free. 
 
Post <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Coca-Cola&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Coca-Cola</a>, Nadkarni had started marketing consulting firm MarketGate in 2005. He later sold the company to Publicis Groupe around four years ago. Maverix has already brought on board brand consultant Santosh Desai as an investor along with a few others. 
 
According to reports, the packaged foods market in India is pegged to be about $48 billion, while the major contributors like meat, bread, dairy, staples and fruit and vegetables, is estimated to be at $200 billion.

Kishore Biyani-led <keyword id="44949" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Future-group">Future Group</keyword>, one of India's largest brick and mortar retailers, today announced a strategic partnership with <keyword id="18635" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Amazon">Amazon</keyword> India. Starting with fashion segment, the partnership will later be extended to every category. The partnership between Amazon and Future Group marks the entry of the country’s largest brick-and-mortar retailer into eCommerce segment. 
 
Future group will use Amazon’s platform to sell its private labels like Lee Cooper, Converse, Indigo Nation, Scullers or Jealous21, etc. Moreover, Amazon India will also help Future Group in developing new products in categories that are currently not covered by traditional retailers. 
 “The bottom line in each of our retail success stories is ‘know your customer’. … Partnership with Amazon, which obsesses to be earth’s most customer centric company, will enable us to leverage their strengths, investments, and innovations in technology to reach out to wider set of consumers across India,” Future Group CEO <keyword id="44950" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Kishore-Biyani">Kishore Biyani</keyword> said. The filing on the stock exchange says that it will be done in “one or more tranches from time to time mainly to replace its existing high cost current or near term maturity debts requirements.” Biyani has been struggling to find investors for some time now. Future Consumer is currently looking to raise ₹300 crore through a rights issue. By March 2020, ratings agency ICRA had already placed a negative rating on Biyani’s company because of its debt. “Icra notes the increase in debt is mainly on account of an increase in debt of the operating companies, with the total debt at the group’s listed companies increased to ₹12,778 crore as on 30 September 2019 from ₹10,951 crore as on March 31, 2019," the rating agency said. The rising debt is coupled with the problems from the coronavirus pandemic where Future Retail has seen its revenues take a serious hit. In the third quarter of FY20 ending December 2019, Future Retail posted a 15% fall in profit and a 3% fall in revenue. The disruptions due to COVID-19 pandemic will only make it worse. The Indian snack market is witnessing a ‘French’ revolution of sorts. French fries have turned out to be the fastest growing snack food, not just across fast-food chains but also at modern retailers and frozen food manufacturers. In fact, the <keyword id="47445" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="40" keywordseo="Indian-market">Indian market</keyword> for French fries is growing at an annual rate of more than 30%. Fast food chains like McDonald’s and KFC have declared that French fries are among their top three billing items and the largest selling side dish. While Pantaloons is flexing its muscle ever since it was handed over to Aditya Birla <keyword id="45472" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Group">Group</keyword>, Biyani found a strong footing with Future’s own private label brands along with the licensed ones. For that matter, with its 58 standalone outlets and 237 Big Bazaar stores, Future has licensed brands like Lee Cooper, Buffalo and Bare that have become synonymous with it. Going by the numbers, the Future Group has private labels that account for 95% of revenue of FBB, which comes under Future Retail, and 40% of Future Lifestyle Fashions (FLF), the fashion arm of the group. Future Group is zooming at a pace, which is well appreciated by its rivals. “Kishoreji is a fabric fashion garment man who started his innings way back in 1987 with a local brand. His fashion experience and understanding is unmatched,” <keyword id="162214" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Govind-Shrikhande">Govind Shrikhande</keyword>, MD of Shoppers Stop told Economic Times.

New Delhi, Deb 13 () Kishore Biyani-led Future Retail Ltd on Thursday reported a 16.72 per cent decline in consolidated net profit at Rs 164.56 crore for the third quarter ended December. The company had reported a net profit of Rs 197.60 crore in October-December quarter a year ago, Future Retail said in a regulatory filing. Total income fell 3.07 per cent to Rs 5,208.89 crore during the quarter under review from Rs 5,374.12 crore in the corresponding quarter last year. Total expenses were 2.58 per cent lower at Rs 5,042.46 crore as compared with Rs 5,176.52 crore a year ago. Future Retail has a network of 1,500 stores in over 400 cities. Its hypermarket and supermarket business is led by Big Bazaar, Big Bazaar GEN NXT, HyperCity, Foodhall, fbb, Food Bazaar, Easyday Club and Heritage Fresh. India’s flourishing start-up culture implies people here are increasingly interested in starting their own venture. But most of them accept defeat even before starting one. “Where am I going to get the funds from?” – the thought plagues their minds and keeps them away from taking that giant leap. Leaving a stable, secure and smooth life in service to jump into a risky business affair is not an easy decision after all. Lack of funds, therefore, is the plight of every new kid on the block wanting to foray into the world of <keyword id="428085" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="start-ups">start-ups</keyword>, more so in India. 
 
With no social security like in the US, difficulty to get loans from banks until one has collateral and with venture capitalists not ready to invest less than Rs 7-8 million, where can Indian start-ups today raise money from? 
 
The answer is: Angel investors or angels as they are better known as. A group of angels invest nearly 2-3 crore in a start-up if they see potential and future proposition in their business plan. 
 But it’s not that simple is what we realized after talking to one of India’s first angels and now a key player in the entrepreneurial eco system, <keyword id="164919" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Padmaja-Ruparel">Padmaja Ruparel</keyword>. 
 
 She is the first to have set up an angel network in India, which is now called the <keyword id="328347" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Indian-Angel-Network">Indian Angel Network</keyword>. It comprises over 350 investors including the who's who of successful entrepreneurs and dynamic CEOs from India and overseas who bet their money on start-ups. She claims of having invested in 20 start-ups out of which merely 2 have failed so far. Business Insider spoke to Padmaja to bring you five things angel investors look for in start-ups before parking their money in them. Here's what they are: 
 
MASS APPEAL OR NICHE? 
 An angel investor is more likely to invest in your company if you are a <keyword id="6357823" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Big-Bazaar">Big Bazaar</keyword> than a <keyword id="667" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Ritu-Kumar">Ritu Kumar</keyword> sort of fashion label. That means companies catering to large and high growth market are what angel investors look at, because mass appeal equals to high returns. 
 
“We look at need value over aspiration value. So start-ups catering to the needs of large section of people would be our choice over those who are targeting a niche segment and are more of aspiration value to masses,” says Ruparel. 
 
INNOVATION 
 
Innovation attracts angel investors for sure – be it a product design innovation, improvement in a current product’s performance, in its delivery system or a complete new innovation in what you have for your target audience. It should be a crucial innovation that either solves your customer’s pain point, makes things easier for them or gives them a new experience altogether. 
 
“When mobile phones came, they corrected the reception quality of landline phones and also helped people in moving around easily while talking. It was not only improvement but also value addition for customers. Another example is companies today have outsourced several business processes to BPOs. These third party service providers have created that space for themselves. So, innovation either needs to be something different or a business done differently,” explains Ruparel. 
 
FOCUS ON SETTING UP BUSINESS OR RAISING MONEY? 
 
If you want to build and run a successful business, an angel investor is interested in you, however, it’s not if you simply aim to raise money from them. 
 
“Raising money should be one of the milestones in your journey to establishing a full-fledged business. Only then will investors, who are themselves at high-risk in investing in start-ups, come to you,” says Ruparel. 
 
IDENTITY, OBJECTIVE AND A CLEAR BUSINESS PLAN 
 
Get your basics clear if you seek angel investment. So before pitching, ask yourself “am I a product or a service, what is my differentiator in the market, who is my competition, who is my target audience, am I addressing a pain point of the target customers or am I adding value, what’s is my business proposition.” If you have clear-cut answers to these questions, you are in! 
 
TALENT 
 
A talented and passionate team to drive your start up and make it a success – this is one of the most crucial things you need to impress angels. Ruparel says 75 per cent of her evaluation is usually on the talent of the team and their ability to pull off the plan. 
 
“Start-ups don’t have a large team. The small pool of resource that they have needs to be a talented lot. It’s tricky because talent comes with money and start-ups don’t have the money. That’s a challenge but if you can work it out, you are good to go,” says Ruparel. 
 
“I’d personally prefer an A grade team with a B grade business idea than a B grade team with an A grade idea, because great ideas are only great when they are implemented well and you need a fantastic team to do that,” she concludes.
