Using a range of modern scientific techniques, the research team examined Lake Kinneret’s unique conditions to see if there might be another reason for these “miraculous” catches of fish. <h2>What happens in Lake Kinneret</h2>The researchers found that Lake Kinneret is naturally stratified, with two distinct layers of water: a warmer, oxygen-rich upper layer, where most fish reside, and a colder, oxygen-poor lower layer. Normally, these two layers remain separate, but every once in a while, a unique combination of environmental conditions causes them to mix. Imagine standing by the lake as hundreds or even thousands of fish rise to the surface — the scene could easily inspire stories of miraculous bounty. <h2>A coincidence or a miracle?</h2>To investigate the phenomenon, the research team deployed temperature sensors, oxygen metres, and even tested wind speed and direction in the lake. These instruments confirmed that Lake Kinneret experiences regular die-offs of fish due to stratification, followed by these mass appearances of fish near the surface. While the study’s findings don’t rule out the possibility of miracles, they suggest that at least some of the stories of miraculous catches might be explained by natural processes. If Jesus and his disciples happened to be fishing in Lake Kinneret during one of these die-offs, the sudden appearance of fish may have seemed miraculous. From a modern perspective, it’s a reminder that ancient people often attributed unusual natural events to divine intervention simply because they lacked the scientific knowledge we have today. <ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="6388562" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="clue">Clue</keyword> is a <keyword id="6517311" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="period-tracking">period tracking</keyword> app, founded by Ida Tin.</li><li>It helps <keyword id="624" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Women">women</keyword> understand their cycles and their bodies, and also gathers data that can be used to push women's science forward.</li><li>Tin wanted to start the company because she realized how far technology had come since the 1960s, with the internet and smartphones, but the science of women's bodies had barely progressed at all.</li><li>She grew up traveling the world on motorcycles with her parents, and what she saw taught her how women needing to control their own bodies was a global need.</li><li>She told Insider female <keyword id="6354750" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="health">health</keyword> is not something to be embarrassed about, and she wants to be part of that cultural shift.</li></ul>Ida Tin grew up traveling around the world on motorcycles with her parents, which showed her all kinds of different lives people are living. But one thing that was the same wherever she went was the importance of women having control over their own bodies."If they have more children than their desire, everything kind of breaks down," Tin told Insider. "They can't get into school or be financially independent, and it's just terrible. It's terrible when people have more children that they can care for."Tin is the founder of <a href="https://helloclue.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the period tracking app Clue</a>, which helps women with this "global need" of understanding their cycles and bodies. She formed the idea when she started taking the pill and thought about how far technology and research in other areas had advanced since the 1960s."You should think that it's a big part of life to figure out how to not have children or when to have children," she said. "And yet with this, there's nothing."The plan was to create something that could be the next generation technology for family planning, she said, "that was data based and not chemistry based."<h2>Misinformation and complications</h2>Clue is not yet regulated as a contraceptive, but that is a future aspiration. For now, Tin said the app helps women understand the patterns of their bodies. In simple terms, they can know when their next <keyword id="45804" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="period">period</keyword> is coming, or whether it's late or early. They can also start recognizing if they have certain symptoms, such as headaches or acne, at certain points in their cycle."It's a magical biological system we have, it's extraordinary complex, and it's a miracle that it works," said Tin. "But it also comes with a lot of questions. It also comes with problems and maintenance. It's hurting women when they don't know because then they can't take care of themselves, their own health."She said tracking <keyword id="56707" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="periods">periods</keyword> can help teach us things we may have missed out on learning when we were younger, such as basic knowledge of how many days women are fertile during their cycle, and what breast tenderness means."A lot of people have had this experience of something happens, like their birth control is not working for them, and they have to try to Google things and figure it out," said Tin. "I think women often have this experience that they have to go and become the expert themselves."They also have to wade through a jungle of misinformation online when it comes to their sexual health. Some false articles also have agendas, Tin said, which makes the need for trustworthy, scientific information even more vital.<h2>Data is power</h2>The app also gathers data from users to help push female health science forward. <a href="https://helloclue.com/articles/about-clue/scientific-research-at-clue" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Clue conducts its own research</a>, and also makes the data available for free."There's a lot of blank areas, and female health has always been underfunded and underserved and under researched," said Tin. "So that's a really important part of what we do and we actually spend a fair amount of resources on it."Data also helps women and healthcare professionals make sense of things."When you know your own body you can go and say to your doctor, 'My cycle used to be 30 days and now suddenly it's 40 — it's not right,'" she said. "We hear so many times that when you have the data then the doctors can hear you better."On a societal level, it's about treating menstrual cycles as a natural part of life, and not "something to be embarrassed about," she said."We can talk about our headaches but we can't talk about our cramps, why is that?" she said. "It's a cultural thing. It could be different. So how can we be part of creating that shift in <keyword id="24504" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="culture">culture</keyword>?"<div type="image" title="Clue" height="1202" width="1603" msid="76220586" hostid="261"></div>Tin coined the term "FemTech" partly to fuel that shift and get people talking about the companies that are dedicated to women's health and research. She saw technology and products forming, but there was a lot of confusion in the language people were using."I thought, what if we had a term that could put them all in one category?" she said. "That felt empowering. But it also felt like it would be easier for investors and media to go find these companies and to talk about them."For example, it might be easier for a male investor to talk about having a FemTech company in their portfolio rather than explaining they're working with an app that helps women with their pelvic floor exercises."As a group you have more strengths and more cultural sort of acceptance," Tin said.<h2>'Giving our bodies a voice'</h2>Tin said there's a long way to go with Clue, both with continuing to develop the app and taking the data and "doing more magic with it.""It's like your body," she said. "You think you have it figured out and then you get older and it changes. It's always a learning experience."But she's confident in saying the company is a progressive voice for female health in the world, and is hopefully making more space for women's bodies in everyday conversation and society. Fertility and sexual health does affect the whole population after all, so it would be a waste to ignore what women's bodies are saying."Sometimes I think of it almost like a translation from what our body is telling us to what we can hear and comprehend," Tin said. Buffett is one of the most charitable men on the planet, <a href="https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&amp;rct=j&amp;q=&amp;esrc=s&amp;source=web&amp;cd=2&amp;cad=rja&amp;ved=0CDcQFjAB&amp;url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.forbes.com%2Fsites%2Flearnvest%2F2013%2F09%2F06%2F4-charitable-giving-tips-from-warren-buffett%2F&amp;ei=wPIQU9_lFMy10AHn3oCIAw&amp;usg=AFQjCNEEPKiuaRbe8WV6jy3kZnkjrpUxuA&amp;sig2=Ff9dsAkQDvJ_OSlpKWJG2A&amp;bvm=bv.62286460,d.dmQ">giving away billions each year</a> and with <a href="http://www.mnn.com/money/personal-finance/stories/warren-buffett-donates-26-billion-to-gates-foundation-and-other">plans to donate</a> the majority of his fortune upon his death. 
However, a day later we wrote about Buffett's challenge, we got an email from Rhonda Hess, a retired kindergarten teacher and mother of three other teachers. She thoughtfully laid out her frustration that such a huge sum would be rewarded for what amounts to dumb luck, and detailed her family's concerns about paying off their sons' college loans. With her permission, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/grandmother-angered-by-bracket-challenge-2014-1">we published her remarks</a>:
...Life is good and don't get me wrong, we are blessed. We have so much more than countless others in the world and we know that. We have the luxuries of a roof over our heads and a car and can pay our bills even though most months are tight. However, the college loans drag on us like a ton of bricks. With them, we have no flexibility. Now we worry about things like how we are we ever going to replace the roof or the furnace when they quit. Any type of health issue would be devastating. Our finances depend totally on our prayer life and we are very thankful, God has been faithful. Why couldn't Mr. Buffett's organization instead of giving a billion dollars to one lucky person for something as frivolous as a basketball bracket (and I had three sons that played the game and love it) help LOTS of families that struggle to always do the right thing and never seem to get a break on the hardwood court of life...
The next day, we got another email.
"I would love to get in touch with Diz &amp; Riz if possible and help pay off their loans (anonymously)," the individual said.
We did not think we would be crossing an ethical line by serving as an intermediary. After confirming his identity, we asked him to send us his legal counsel's contact info, which we then passed along to the Hesses. 
A few weeks later, we got an email from Rhonda and her husband Doug saying college loans they held for two of their sons had been paid off. 
"We've prayed a lot of years about these college loans," she told BI by phone. "We really had never seen a way that we could pay them off quickly ourselves, and our fear had always been that our kids would end up strapped if something happened to us, like if we died suddenly and our kids would suddenly be strapped with them. Our kids worked hard, they had their own college loans they'd been paying them off. This was so unexpected, it's really a miracle."
The individual would only allow us to say that he is a partner at a hedge fund, and owns a media firm on the West Coast. He said he was simply struck by the parallels between the Hess family and his own - he also has three sons - as well as the devotion to teaching demonstrated by the entire Hess family. 
"People who are gainfully employed, with real jobs that help people in society, who teach our youth, are stuck in a structure where they can't get out from under [their debts]," he told us. "There's no program or mechanism to help them work through that," he said. "It was clearly frustrating and weighing heavily on them. 
He explained that the story came out at a time where he was feeling particularly fortunate, and that it felt inequitable to him that a family like the Hesses should have to struggle.
"There are ways to do things that are more scalable, but this was a way to do something that was very direct and meaningful to them, and I was fortunate in a position."
Andrew Hess, 33, is an adjunct Bible studies instructor at Colorado Christian University in Colorado Springs, and also teaches at his church. He serves as writer and content manager at Focus on the Family. He'd taken out loans to pay for his psychology degree at Taylor University in Indiana. The Hesses deferred to the benefactor's judgment to disclose the amount paid off, and but he declined to do so. 
"I'm pretty busy, I'd kind of put it out of my mind," Andrew Hess said. "Of course I was hopeful that it actually would work out. Then on the morning, of my mom forwarded the email they'd gotten from loan service that said 'we received your payment.' We were all kind of rejoining together, that's how i found out, I responded to thee email just saying 'Praise the Lord, that is outstanding.' I think my words were 'unbelievable.' "
The benefactor does not believe America needs to rethink how it does charity. But he does hope others will be inspired to make a similar gesture. 
"It would be terrific if someone else thought of something that was as directed and impactful on certain people's lives as opposed to something more diffuse, where the money run through organizations where it's difficult to follow. 
He continued:
"If people think through anything having read that I did this, it would be just how rewarding, how impactful this was for them [the Hesses], from the perspective that you can do this, that I had the wherewithal to help somebody I had never met before. That carries more significance for me than donating to the Red Cross...I think doing a random good act, it makes me feel and continues to make me feel really good."
The Hesses now say they will focus on helping others around them, despite their apparent lifelong commitment to doing so. They are grateful that the benefactor recognized the effort teachers put into their profession.
"I think teachers are sometimes misunderstood," Rhonda Hess said. "Unless you have teachers in your family, I don't think the public really, truly understands the hours that teachers can put in. It's easy to think 'Oh teachers are off all summer,' or that type of thing."
Even so, she quickly added, "We think teaching was just wonderful careers for us. We love being teachers."
