The effects of poisonous gases that leaked from the <keyword id="23933468" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Union-Carbide" source="keywords">Union Carbide</keyword> factory in Madhya Pradesh's Bhopal 40 years ago were seen in the next generations of those who survived the tragedy, a former government forensic doctor has said. At least 3,787 people were killed, and more than five lakh were affected after a toxic gas leaked from the pesticide factory in the city on the intervening nights of December 2 and 3, 1984. Speaking at an event held by organisations of gas tragedy survivors on Saturday, Dr. D. K Satpathy, former head of the forensics department of Bhopal's Gandhi Medical College, said he performed 875 post-mortems on the first day of the disaster and witnessed 18,000 autopsies the next five years. Sathpathy claimed Union Carbide had denied questions about the effects of poisonous gases on unborn children of women survivors and said effects would not cross the placental barrier in the womb in any condition. He said blood samples of pregnant women who died in the tragedy were examined, and it was found that 50% of the poisonous substances found in the mother were also found in the child in her womb. Children born to surviving mothers had the poisonous substances in their system, and this affected the health of the next generation, Sathpathy claimed and questioned why research on this was stopped. Such effects will continue for generations, he said. Satpathy said it was said that MIC gas leaked from the Union Carbide plant, and when it came in contact with water, thousands of gases were formed, and some of these caused cancer, blood pressure, and liver damage. New Delhi, Legal doyen and veteran advocate Fali S <keyword id="20668460" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="nariman" source="keywords">Nariman</keyword> died here on Wednesday at the age of 95. He was suffering from multiple ailments, including cardiac issues. Born on January 10, 1929, Nariman was enrolled as an advocate at the Bombay High Court in November 1950 and was designated a senior advocate in 1961. Nariman was born in Rangoon (now Yangon) to a well-off business executive. The Nariman family fled to India in the face of the Japanese invasion in 1942 when Fali was 12. He practised law for more than 70 years, initially in the Bombay High Court and since 1972, in the Supreme Court. Nariman was appointed as the additional solicitor general of India in May 1972. He resigned from the post a day after the imposition of Emergency on June 26, 1975. In his long and illustrious legal career, Nariman argued in several landmark cases, including the Bhopal gas tragedy case, TMA Pai case, Jayalalithaa disproportionate assets case and the famous case of the National Judicial Appointments Commission, which was struck down by the Supreme Court. Nariman, who was often referred to as the "Bhishma Pitamah" of the Indian judiciary, authored books, including "Before the Memory Fades", "The State of the Nation", "India's Legal System: Can it be Saved?" and "God Save the Hon'ble Supreme Court". Nariman received the Padma Bhushan in January 1991 and in 2007, he was awarded the Padma Vibhushan. He was also nominated as a member of the Rajya Sabha in November 1999. In 2019, Chitrangan became a Flipkart seller. “Flipkart helped us in listing over 200 of our sarees and helped us with visibility for our products nationwide.” It also opened up his perspective on selling, adding specialties like market trends and location-based selling. Soon, he tapped the strong vein of demand in India’s southern cities. Going online allowed Sambalpuri sarees to grow out of the shadow of heritage and local demand, and into fashion that was more mainstream. “Before joining Flipkart, we were selling our products in our village or state, but now our products are available to customers across the country,” says Chitrangan. Working with Flipkart has also grown the weavers’ creativity. “Before Flipkart, we were traditional saree sellers for about 40 years. We worked with the same designs. Our profit margin was not great, and the designs remained old-fashioned,” he remembers. As Chitrangan says, “Orders are rising, and our community is very happy with their work. During a midnight hearing, he issued directions to the Delhi Police to ensure that all injured people are granted safe passage to medical institutions and hospitals. Over three decades of courtroom drama Muralidhar has been practising law for over three decades. Starting off in September 1984 in Chennai, in three years he started to practice at the Supreme Court and the Delhi High Court. As an advocate, he worked on some notable cases — like addressing victims of the Bhopal Gas tragedy and arguing on behalf of the people displaced by the Narmada Dam project. In time he also served as counsel for the National Human Right Commission and the Election Commission of India. He was also awarded his Ph D by Delhi University in 2003. It was only 2006 that he was appointed as a judge at the Delhi court. Set to change things from the get-go, he refused to be addressed at ‘Your Lordship’ by lawyers. Furthermore, he was a part of the bench that ruled in favour of disclosing how many Supreme Court judges had declared their assets in response to an RTI. Over the years, he delivered a number of impactful judgements. In 2009, he was a part of the bench which initially repealed section 377, legalising homosexuality. He also convicted politician Sajjan Kumar for his involvement in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots and revoked the transit demand of activist Gautam Navlakha in the Bhima Koregaon case. He’s also an author. He wrote the book Law, Poverty and Legal Aid: Access to Criminal Justice which was published in August 2004.
