The cybersecurity researchers believe that the combination of data left exposed could give hackers the ability to carry out identity theft, tax fraud, monetary theft, among other illegal activities. The research team led by Noam Rotem and Ran Locar describe the data breach as being akin to a hacker gaining access to the entire data infrastructure of a bank and detailed information about its users’ account information. “The sheer volume of sensitive, private data exposed, along with UPI IDs, document scans, and more, makes this breach deeply concerning,” said the report explaining the seriousness of the data breach. They assert that using the above details of the personal data about an individual, from their names and dates of birth to biometric details and ID numbers, could give third-party onlookers a complete profile of an individual — including a look into their finances and banking records. “It would be incredibly valuable to hackers… This data would make illegally accessing those accounts much easier,” said the report. With complete profiles of BHIM users being leaked, it leaves them extremely vulnerable to all sorts of frauds and theft. The risks for affected users can exceed just monetary loss – there is a high risk of identity theft, especially since almost all personal data has been exposed. “The scale of the exposed data is extraordinary, affecting millions of people all over India and exposing them to potentially devastating fraud, theft, and attack from hackers and cybercriminals,” it added, suggesting that the breach is likely very invasive. How and when was BHIM UPI’s data breached? The cybersecurity researchers claim that 409 GB of data was stored on an unsecured Amazon Web Services (AWS) S3 bucket exposing records from February 2019. “S3 buckets are a popular form of cloud storage across the world but require developers to set up the security protocols on their accounts,” said the report. The research team at vpnMentor discovered the BHIM data breach on April 23 and contacted India’s Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) on May 5. CSC BHIM site left Aadhaar cards, PAN numbers, and biometric information exposed — could be used to carry out financial fraud and identity theft, says report

In a statement, the NPCI said that it has conducted an independent verification of the recent news, including through a leading Digital Risk Monitoring firm who has reconfirmed that the claims against the BHIM App are untrue. "There is no data leak with respect to the BHIM app," it said. It accounts for a major part of online transactions in India. Apart from banking apps, there are several popular third-party apps like <keyword id="6357886" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="phonepe">PhonePe</keyword>, <keyword id="2750705" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Google-Pay">Google Pay</keyword>, Paytm and Amazon that support <keyword id="3679109" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="UPI-payments">UPI payments</keyword>. In fact, BHIM, RuPay and the State Bank of India (SBI) app were the main highlights at the ‘Business, Innovation and Community Event’ held on the South Asian island. Launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, it marks a significant increase in the global outreach of India’s own digital payment platforms. In the marriage of systems, India’s RuPay digital payments are now linked into Singapore’s own Network for Electronic Transfers (NETS). What that means for users is that they can make payments using RuPay on any of the NETS access points across the island country. Flipping that equation, Singapore users on NETS will be able to make online purchases on any e-commerce merchant website that’s integrated with the National Payment Corporation of India (<keyword id="193629" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="NPCI">NPCI</keyword>). That’s essentially 2.8 million points of sale that support RuPay transactions. Why does it matter? The cross-interaction of these two systems could potentially lead to multi-billion dollar transactions according to <a href="https://www.thequint.com/news/india/pm-narendra-modi-singapore-visits-startup-exhibition-to-boost-tech-and-ai">experts</a> in the industry. Especially, since the volume of travel between Singapore and India amounts to some five million people either passing through or stopping over. Even overall, India <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/nri/visa-and-immigration/with-16-million-india-tops-world-in-number-of-migrants-abroad/articleshow/62130691.cms">leads</a> in the world in the number of migrants abroad. The disparity between the number of people going out of India, and the amount coming in is huge. It’s first SBI branch to do so and an important step towards cross-border usage. According to the Soma Sankara Prasad, the Country Head for SBI in Singapore, the new feature of the <keyword id="6582611" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="SBI-app">SBI app</keyword> will yield the most utility for blue-collar workers. Using a Virtual Payment Address (VPA), any savings account holder at SBI Singapore can send remittances of up to ₹100,000. Introducing the country’s digital payment platform into the international arena could even be considered to be a step towards <a href="https://thediplomat.com/2017/11/the-ease-of-doing-business-in-india/">improving</a> the ‘Ease of Doing Business’ in India. Insight from sources talking to <a href="https://tech.economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/mobile/whatsapp-pay-full-rollout-may-happen-as-early-as-next-week/64371768">ETtech</a> state that the Facebook-owned messaging app wants to rush ahead with the roll out even though all the partners aren’t ready. Reports suggest that while HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank and Axis Bank are set to process transfers, State Bank of India (SBI) is yet to put the relevant systems in place. So, now, instead of a full rollout, Facebook is deciding to go ahead with its three partners to counter the competition. So, what’s the rush? Rather than necessity being the mother of invention, the inventions are themselves turning responsible for the new requirements of an ever evolving ecosystem. Thus, with the Cashless India campaign pulling in new users with its own <a href="https://swarajyamag.com/economy/forget-cash-cheques-and-atms-with-upi-your-mobile-will-be-as-good-as-a-bank">unified payment interface</a> (<keyword id="6358921" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="upi">UPI</keyword>), apps like <keyword id="704860" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tez">Tez</keyword> and <keyword id="6357120" type="DEFINITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="paytm">PayTm</keyword> have experienced a significant <a href="https://swarajyamag.com/insta/upi-wars-paytm-beats-google-tez-claims-nearly-40-per-cent-market-share-in-february-2018-upi-transactions">boom</a>. And thus, it’s not surprising that WhatsApp wants to capitalise on that opportunity with its huge user base in India. The pilot version of WhatsApp Pay was <a href="https://techcrunch.com/2018/02/08/whatsapp-has-launched-person-to-person-payments-into-beta-in-india/">launched</a> on Android under the app's beta version earlier in February this year with a base of 1 million users. Thus far, it has received <a href="https://www.zdnet.com/article/why-whatsapps-entrance-into-indias-payments-space-has-terrified-paytm/">positive</a> reviews. Google’s Tez and Alibaba-backed PayTm have both expressed their <a href="https://www.bloombergquint.com/technology/2018/02/15/paytm-calls-whatsapps-closed-payments-service-unfair-as-cashless-war-intensifies">displeasure</a> at this development. Tez even <a href="http://indianexpress.com/article/technology/social/google-tez-app-now-supports-chat-feature-heres-how-to-use/">launched</a> its own chat feature to make its own platform more appealing to users. Their ‘displeasure’ isn’t surprising in the least since WhatsApp already has 200 million users, which is essentially, 20 times that of PayTm. If all WhatsApp users potentially move to using it as a payment platform, the competition it would bring to the cashless sector is massive. That being said, users should be aware that WhatsApp in itself isn’t a licensed financial institution. Their terms and conditions explicitly <a href="https://www.thequint.com/tech-and-auto/tech-news/whatsapp-upi-payment-feature-india-how-it-works">state</a> that - “(WhatsApp is) not responsible for UPI service interruptions or acts or omissions of PSPs or your bank including the payments, settlement and clearance of funds.” Some features don’t get introduced because they’re necessary but because they’re convenient, or add to the already existing convenience of an app. Such seems to be the case for WhatsApp and the integration of its payment feature.

Forging an alliance that could bring millions of riders and driver partners into the digital payments revolution, <keyword id="1042120" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Uber">Uber</keyword> India announced a Unified Payments Interface (<keyword id="6358921" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="upi">UPI</keyword>) integration in partnership with <keyword id="6383340" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="national-payments-corporation-of-india">National Payments Corporation of India</keyword> (NPCI) and banking partners <keyword id="6355975" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Axis-Bank">Axis Bank</keyword> and <keyword id="6357149" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="hdfc-bank">HDFC Bank</keyword>. According to Uber, nearly 60 per cent of app based taxi drivers in India continue to make cash transactions.

Rather, they will receive an incentive of 0.25% of the transaction value (limited to certain caps). UIDAI CEO confident about BHIM and Aadhaar Pay, says misuse not possible

A research group at <keyword id="6364832" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIT-Kharagpur">IIT Kharagpur</keyword> has designed the country's first indigenous superpower <keyword id="6354474" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Drone">drone</keyword> called '<keyword id="1461878" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bhim">Bhim</keyword>'. 
 
BHIM has been built by using the "internet of things" -the inter-networking of physical devices, vehicles, buildings and other items embedded with electronics, software, sensors, actuators and network connectivity -which enables these objects to collect and exchange data. 
 Aimed for conflict zones, it creates a <keyword id="2069191" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Wi-Fi-zone">Wi-Fi zone</keyword> within a nearly 1-km radius when it flies overhead. With a battery backup of seven hours, the drone can fly into a disaster zone and create a seamless communication network for security forces and rescue personnel. 
 
It maintains long flight times and drops emergency supplies by using parachutes. Bhim costs just one-fourth the price of any average drone used for surveillance in India now.
