New Delhi, June 1 (IANS) Security researchers have discovered that about 7.26 million records linked to users of mobile payments app BHIM were left exposed to the public by a website. The exposed data included sensitive information such as names, dates of birth, age, gender, home address, caste status and Aadhaar card details, among others, said the report from VPN review website vpnMentor. "The scale of the exposed data is extraordinary, affecting millions of people all over India and exposing them to potentially devastating fraud, theft, and attack from hackers and cybercriminals," the security researchers from vpnMentor wrote in a blog post on Sunday. Offered by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), the app BHIM, or Bharat Interface for Money, was launched in 2016. In a statement on Monday, the NPCI said that "there has been no data compromise at BHIM App." "We have come across some news reports which suggest data breach at BHIM App. We would like to clarify that there has been no data compromise at BHIM App and request everyone to not fall prey to such speculations. NPCI follows high level of security and an integrated approach to protect its infrastructure and continue to provide a robust payments ecosystem," said the NPCI. In its report, vpnMentor also said that the website that leaked the data was developed by a company called CSC e-Governance Services LTD. in partnership with the Indian government. The issue was resolved late last month after the researchers contacted India's Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) twice in a month's time. "In this case, the data was stored on an unsecured Amazon Web Services (AWS) S3 bucket," the researchers said, adding that S3 buckets are a popular form of Cloud storage across the world but require developers to set up the security protocols on their accounts. "We reached out to the website's developers to notify them of the misconfiguration in their S3 bucket and to offer our assistance. After not receiving a reply, we contacted India's Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In), which deals with cybersecurity in the country," they added. It appears CSC established the website connected to the misconfigured S3 bucket to promote BHIM usage across India and sign up new merchant businesses, such as mechanics, farmers, service providers, and store owners onto the app, according to the research led by vpnMentor's Noam Rotem and Ran Locar. The volume of exposed data which was first discovered by the security researchers on April 23 amounted to 409GB. "It's difficult to say precisely, but the S3 bucket seemed to contain records from a short period: February 2019. However, even within such a short timeframe, over 7 million records had been uploaded and exposed," said the report.  Aimed for conflict zones, it creates a <keyword id="2069191" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Wi-Fi-zone">Wi-Fi zone</keyword> within a nearly 1-km radius when it flies overhead. With a battery backup of seven hours, the drone can fly into a disaster zone and create a seamless communication network for security forces and rescue personnel. 
 
It maintains long flight times and drops emergency supplies by using parachutes. Bhim costs just one-fourth the price of any average drone used for surveillance in India now.

CSC BHIM site left Aadhaar cards, PAN numbers, and biometric information exposed — could be used to carry out financial fraud and identity theft, says report

In a statement, the NPCI said that it has conducted an independent verification of the recent news, including through a leading Digital Risk Monitoring firm who has reconfirmed that the claims against the BHIM App are untrue. "There is no data leak with respect to the BHIM app," it said. This is a standard feature used by merchants, who only need to receive money using UPI, it said. NPCI denies data breach of BHIM mobile app

<ul><li><keyword id="3005928" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="FASTag">FASTag</keyword> can now be recharged using PhonePe, Google Pay and BHIM.</li><li>At present, Paytm does not allow users to recharge FASTags from other banks.</li></ul>In its push towards automated digital payments at toll plazas, the Indian government has made FASTag mandatory on all national highways. It partnered with over 20 banks to facilitate this change. Earlier, if you had a FASTag from a particular bank, you could add money to it using only that bank’s app or website. Forging an alliance that could bring millions of riders and driver partners into the digital payments revolution, <keyword id="1042120" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Uber">Uber</keyword> India announced a Unified Payments Interface (<keyword id="6358921" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="upi">UPI</keyword>) integration in partnership with <keyword id="6383340" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="national-payments-corporation-of-india">National Payments Corporation of India</keyword> (NPCI) and banking partners <keyword id="6355975" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Axis-Bank">Axis Bank</keyword> and <keyword id="6357149" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="hdfc-bank">HDFC Bank</keyword>. According to Uber, nearly 60 per cent of app based taxi drivers in India continue to make cash transactions.

Why it makes sense This move could help in the mass adoption of governement-led fintech innovations such as BHIM/UPI for millions of riders and drivers using the platform. With over 9.4 million Uber trips a week in India this July, the potential for encouraging adoption of UPI across riders is immense. Equally significant will be the impact on the driver side. The company depends on consumers being able to frequently make low value payments with minimal friction and UPI integration will bring millions of riders and driver partners into the digital payments ecosystem, offering them another secure and seamless payment interface and has offered its riders the option to use their existing UPI IDs to pay for their rides in July 2017. This integration now allows riders to even create UPI IDs using the Uber app directly. By being more accessible in terms of payments, this move bolsters UberSHAAN - an effort to generate 1 million livelihood opportunities on the Uber platform by 2018.

Presently, the upcoming IPO that has created a lot of buzz is Zomato, a food delivery startup that is currently valued at around $8.1 billion. To invest in an IPO, you need to apply to buy a ‘lot of shares’ from the market. The bidding for these IPOs is usually open for three days particularly during market hours. Now, let us understand how to invest in IPOs. A Demat account, a trading application like Zerodha, Angel Broking etc and UPI ID on BHIM app are necessary if you want to invest conveniently in an IPO. Unified payment interface (UPI) is a banking system for money transfers on payment apps like Google Pay, PhonePe and so on. One of the simplest ways to track IPOs and invest in them is through trading platforms. Here’s how you can do it through Zerodha’s Kite application, which is meant for trading stocks and commodities. <ul><li>Login to the mobile app and select the IPO option under console. If you’re logging in through desktop, then go to console -- portfolio -- IPO.</li><li>You will find a list of IPOs that are open for investment. Select the IPO you want to invest in.</li><li>Enter your UPI ID from the BHIM app. Ensure your UPI ID is mapped to your personal bank account. </li><li>Select investor type for your application. </li><li>Enter the lot size (number of shares required to buy in one lot) announced by the company.</li><li>Tick on the cut off price for more chances of allotment of shares as it indicates investor’s willingness to subscribe to shares at any price discovered within the price band. Cut off price is the issue price.</li><li>Retail investors can bid for three lots. </li><li>After this step, click on the check box to confirm and submit.</li><li>The last step is to accept the mandate request for proceeding with IPO on your BHIM UPI app. Once you accept the mandate, the amount of funds for IPO will be blocked till the allotment. </li><li>Now wait till the allotment date of shares to see if you have received the lot size you bid for.</li></ul>Meanwhile you can also invest in Zomato’s pre application offer through Paytm Money Paytm Money has for the first time allowed users to apply for an IPO before the actual IPO opening. This feature is built to help a large proportion of investors who do not trade actively and may miss out during market hours. Basically, a retail investor can plan an IPO order 24x7 on days when a pre-open IPO is enabled. Pre-IPO feature is currently live on Paytm Money’s mobile app. The process to apply in a pre IPO is similar to that of other trading platforms. You just need to fill your investor details, lot size and accept the mandate on BHIM app. Another way to invest is through your bank. This option is generally available between 5 a.m. and 11 a.m. on the bank’s website.
