Online scams in India have been on the rise for the last few months and every now and then, a new case surfaces where a victim loses their hard-earned money. Usually, scammers in many cases pose as company officials to steal your sensitive information and misuse it. In one such recent incident, a 44-year-old woman from <keyword id="19895934" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="noida" source="keywords">Noida</keyword> recently fell victim to an <keyword id="20971199" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="esim-scam" source="Orion">eSIM scam</keyword>, losing ₹27 lakh and becoming the target of fraudulent loan activity. The scam involved the manipulation of her <keyword id="19909735" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="sim" source="keywords">SIM</keyword> card and banking details, which allowed the fraudster to siphon off her funds and take out a loan in her name. <h2>What exactly happened</h2> According to an HT report, <keyword id="23110017" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="jyotsana-bhatia" source="keywords">Jyotsana Bhatia</keyword>, a resident of Sector 82 in Noida, works at a private company and filed a complaint with the cybercrime police station in Sector 36. On August 31, Bhatia received a WhatsApp call from a person posing as a customer care executive from her telecom provider. The caller explained that her SIM card could be converted to an embedded SIM (eSIM), which is a digital version of a physical SIM card and can be helpful in case of phone loss. The suspect offered to help Bhatia activate the eSIM feature, instructing her to select the option in her mobile carrier’s application and enter a verification code that was sent to her phone. Bhatia, unaware of the fraud, followed the steps as instructed. Unfortunately, as soon as she entered the code, her physical SIM card was deactivated. The suspect assured her that a new SIM card would be delivered by September 1, leaving her temporarily without access to her mobile number. When the promised SIM card failed to arrive, Bhatia contacted the telecom provider’s customer care service and was advised to visit the service centre to get a replacement. After three days, on September 3, she was issued a new SIM card. However, by then, the damage had already been done. Bhatia started receiving messages from her bank, revealing that the fraudster had accessed her mobile banking account using her deactivated phone number. By changing the associated email ID, the suspect was able to bypass security checks and transfer large sums of money from her accounts. The fraudster also broke her fixed deposit, siphoned money from two bank accounts, and even took out a loan of ₹7.40 lakh in her name. Bhatia reported that the total amount stolen in multiple transactions amounted to ₹27 lakh. Shocked by the breach, she immediately filed an FIR with the cybercrime unit. The police registered the case under sections 318(4) (cheating) and 319(2) (cheating by personation) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, as well as under relevant sections of the IT Act. Efforts to track down the suspect are currently underway. <h2>Understanding eSIM and its risks </h2> An eSIM (embedded SIM) is a digital version of a SIM card that is built into a device and does not require a physical card. While this technology is convenient and allows users to switch networks or plans without handling a physical card, it also opens the door to new forms of fraud. Scammers can manipulate eSIM features to deactivate a user’s existing SIM card and take control of their phone number, which is linked to various accounts and services. In this case, the fraudster exploited the victim’s trust by posing as a telecom customer care executive, taking advantage of her lack of knowledge about the risks associated with eSIM activation. Once the fraudster gained control of her phone number, they accessed her bank accounts through mobile banking applications that rely on the phone number for authentication. By changing the email ID linked to her account, they prevented the victim from receiving security alerts and were able to make unauthorised transactions without her knowledge.

The scheme is aimed at supporting the development of improved varieties for increasing the production and quality of tea. Under the scheme, the setting up of 800 self-help groups and 330 farmer-producer organisations (FPO) in the next two financial years (2024-26) has been proposed, Amardeep <keyword id="20865624" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="singh-bhatia" source="keywords">Singh Bhatia</keyword>, Additional Secretary in the <keyword id="19992661" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="department-of-commerce" source="keywords">Department of Commerce</keyword> said, adding that the outlay has been increased from Rs 2.7 crore to Rs 105.5 crore for this purpose. "Outlay for the scheme has been increased by 82 per cent from Rs 290.81 crore to Rs 528.97 crore for the next two financial years (2024-25 and 2025-26)," he told reporters here. He said that a significant increase in outlay has been made to promote Indian Tea in both domestic and international markets. The funds for the promotion of tea have been increased to Rs 72.42 crore. For setting up blending and packaging units for value addition, Bhatia said Rs 40 crore has been allocated. "The objective is to increase exports, especially in value-added segments and consumption of quality tea," he said adding a new component of technological interventions for tea plantation has been included for activities like precision farming, drone surveillance, traceability and blockchain, and digitization of activities of <keyword id="20037006" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tea-board" source="keywords">Tea Board</keyword>. India is the third largest exporter of tea in the world. The exports dipped by over 4 per cent to USD 673 million during April-January this fiscal.

Labour costs increased by 8-10 per cent and reinforcement steel prices by about 20 per cent year-on-year during Q3 2022. Looking ahead, the CBRE report said inflationary pressures are widely expected to abate in 2023. "This, alongside the resolution of supply chain disruptions and more active policy intervention from the government, might limit hikes in material prices," it said. The outlook for construction costs remains stable but cautious as market volatility is likely to persist in 2023 along with monetary tightening, continued high inflation, a possibility of a recession in developed economies and geopolitical turmoil-related challenges. CBRE report forecasts a marginal rise in the overall construction costs during 2023 across cities, with Mumbai likely to witness a sharper rise. Fuel price volatility may also impact the overall input costs in 2023. "Despite supply constraints, the demand side of the equation is bolstered this year by rental increases and market demand. "Buoyed by a strong festive season and rising demand across sectors, the <keyword id="807111" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="indian-staffing-federation" source="Orion">Indian Staffing Federation</keyword> (<keyword id="6608230" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="isf" source="Orion">ISF</keyword>) members added 78,000 new jobs in the July-September quarter, a 6 per cent rise in new jobs over the previous April-June quarter," said ISF's Flexi Staffing Employment Growth report. The new jobs in July-September are a combination of new jobs in general staffing and IT staffing, it stated. ISF is the apex industry body representing formal staffing, facility management and security services companies. New jobs in general staffing - which excludes IT staffing - grew 7.3 per cent in July-September, driven by a rise in demand in <keyword id="34523" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="fmcg" source="Orion">FMCG</keyword>, e-commerce, manufacturing, retail, logistics, banking, hospitality, tourism, insurance, and infrastructure, it stated. On the other hand, new jobs in IT staffing remained under pressure, growing a modest 2.2 per cent in the September quarter. While the IT staffing industry continues to address market demands in niche skills, there is a visible impact of the slowdown in global markets even as big Indian IT players curtail new hiring, it stated. <keyword id="8643518" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="cumulatively" source="Orion">Cumulatively</keyword>, ISF's over 110 member companies added 2.32 lakh jobs in the past four quarters, i.e. during the period from October 2022 to September 2023, which includes the 78,000 new jobs in July-September, it stated. Our sales have improved by steady dine-in footfalls across all our outlets. Changing excise policies a challenge Even as the alcoholic beverages industry in India slowly gets back on the road to recovery, it is having to deal with several obstacles – from tourists triggering pandemic scares to varying excise duties across the country. Delhi, a major market for alcoholic beverages, recently changed its excise policy. From September 1, Delhi and Ghaziabad went back to their old excise policies, leaving private players in the lurch. Private players were offering one plus one free alcohol to sell the remaining stock before the old excise policy came back. “The old excise policy favoured the private players more than the government vendors. Label and registration fees have gone up 100 fold and marketing is restricted. For registering a label in Delhi, we have to pay ₹15 lakh per year. For us, Delhi has been very expensive from the beginning, “ said Simba’s Bhatia. The entrepreneurs in the industry say Tier 1 cities were facing hiccups getting back on track due to the high inflow of travellers post pandemic leading to Covid cases. The tier 2 and tier 3 cities were quicker to adapt. “It is more difficult to sell alcohol in India rather than abroad because every state is a different country with its own excise rules. We have a separate team just to monitor the rapid changes in excise rules across states in India. The southern region of India is especially difficult to tap into as it forms 40% of the beer sales,” said Bhatia. Despite these issues, the Indian alcoholic beverage industry is expecting to grow robustly in the next few years and are looking to expand. UK-based research agency <keyword id="14971974" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="iwsr-drinks" source="Orion">IWSR Drinks</keyword> market analysis says Indian spirits segments will grow 4.4% in the next five years while beer will grow 9.3%. “We have been pushing our franchise model quite aggressively and have already begun talks for outlets in Maharashtra, Delhi, Punjab, Rajasthan among other states. We plan to have at least 30 outlets across India in the next few years,” said Ironhill India’s Chekuri. The win helped the runners-up of 2017 edition of the tournament move up to third spot on the points table with three wins and an equal number of losses. But more importantly, it's the healthy +0.768 Net Run Rate (NRR) that could help India make the semifinal knockouts if multiple teams finish their assignments on identical points. Not to forget that the Mithali Raj-led India will also have to win their last league game against South Africa at Christchurch on March 27. It wasn't all smooth sailing for India, though, as they were struggling at 176/6 before Sneh <keyword id="6369941" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="rana" source="Orion">Rana</keyword> and Pooja Vastrakar finished with a flurry to set Bangladesh a target of 230. Yastika Bhatia was the star of the show with a patient 80-ball 50. As wickets kept falling, she stitched two crucial partnerships with Harmanpreet Kaur and Richa Ghosh to keep the scoreboard ticking in the middle overs. Rana was brilliant with the ball as well, finishing with four wickets that broke the back of Bangladesh's batting line-up. All the Indian bowlers looked unplayable from the word go and were rewarded for their tight bowling with wickets as the required run rate kept climbing for the opponents. Bangladesh's chase never took off as only five batters registered double-digit scores, with Salma Khatun top-scoring with 32. Defending 230, India chose to open the bowling with pace-bowling stalwart Jhulan Goswami and spinner Rajeshwari Gayakwad. Rajeshwari broke through first by dismissing Sharmin Akter while the veteran pacer kept things tight at the other end. India struck once again in the Powerplay through Pooja Vastrakar, who trapped Fargana Hoque in front of the stumps. With spinners operating at both ends on a slow track, Bangladesh found getting runs tough. Sneh Rana, who created several chances in her first spell, was rewarded with the wicket of Nigar Sultana, who holed out at mid-on attempting to accelerate. Poonam Yadav claimed her first World Cup wicket by dismissing Murshida Khatun, whose 54-ball 19-run innings came to an end in the 16th over. Rumana Ahmed's stay at the crease didn't last long either, with Rana picking up her second wicket of the game as Bangladesh lost half their side. Lata Mondal and Salma Khatun provided some resistance with a 40-run stand before Goswami got in on the act to remove Khatun. Rana picked up wickets in consecutive overs and eventually finished with a four-for. Goswami finished things off with a wonderful yorker to dismiss Ritu Moni as Bangladesh fell short by 110 runs. Earlier, Shafali Verma (42) and Smriti Mandhana (30) got India off to a flying start after they opted to bat first, with the duo putting on 74 for the opening wicket until disaster struck on the final ball of the 15th over. Mandhana hit Nahida Akter straight to Fargana Hoque and then Ritu Moni got in on the act during the next over to turn the game on its head quickly. Shafali Verma tried to hit one out of the ground and was stumped, before skipper Mithali Raj hit her first ball straight to Fahima Khatun at cover as India were quickly reduced to 74/3. Bhatia and Harmanpreet Kaur repaired the innings but it came at the cost of the run rate falling - their 34-run partnership came in 70 balls before Hoque's direct hit caught Kaur short of her crease. India once again had to rebuild their innings with Ghosh joining Bhatia at the crease. The wicketkeeper-batter took the attack to the bowlers early on, smashing Lata Mondal for consecutive boundaries in the 30th over. The duo kept finding the boundaries regularly but just when they looked set, Ghosh was caught behind trying to cut a ball that was too close to the body. Bhatia got to her second fifty of the tournament but fell off the very next ball attempting the paddle sweep. At 180/6 at the end of 44th over, India needed to finish well and Rana and Vastrakar did just that. Their partnership of 48 in 38 balls propelled India to 229/7.
