State-owned <keyword id="20039950" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bharat-Petroleum-Corporation" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Bharat Petroleum Corporation" meta.hostid="153" meta.entityid="Bharat Petroleum Corporation">Bharat Petroleum Corporation</keyword> plans to invest Rs 1.7 lakh crore over the next five years to grow its core oil refining and fuel marketing business as well as in 'future big bets' of <keyword id="20115883" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="petrochemicals" source="keywords">petrochemicals</keyword> and <keyword id="19895435" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="green-energy" source="keywords">green energy</keyword>, its chairman G Krishnakumar has said. At present, Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (<keyword id="19908646" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="BPCL" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="BPCL" meta.hostid="153" meta.entityid="BPCL">BPCL</keyword>) owns about 14 per cent of India's oil <keyword id="20064251" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="refining-capacity" source="keywords">refining capacity</keyword> and about a quarter of the fuel retailing network. It plans to grow these businesses while foraying into newer areas. The firm is now implementing the first phase of a multi-decade aspirational journey in the form of '<keyword id="22826627" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="project-Aspire" source="keywords">Project Aspire</keyword>' - its five-year strategic framework that is based on two fundamental pillars - 'Nurturing the Core' and 'Investing in Future Big Bets', he said in the company's latest annual report. "Our mid-term strategy is on a continuum. While we remain committed to growing our core businesses, which include refining and marketing <keyword id="20037698" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="petroleum-products" source="keywords">petroleum products</keyword> and upstream, we are equally focused on our big bets comprising petrochemicals, gas, green energy, non-fuel retail, and digital. "Project Aspire, with a planned capex outlay of around Rs 1.70 lakh crore over five years, will enable us to create long-term value for our stakeholders while preserving our planet for future generations," he said. "A cornerstone of our long-term strategy, Project Aspire, with a Rs 1.70 trillion investment, marks the initial phase of our multi-decade odyssey to shape the energy of tomorrow. This, coupled with our robust balance sheet, fuels our ambition to lead the <keyword id="19951336" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="energy-transition" source="keywords">energy transition</keyword>." The company is targeting net zero carbon emissions from its operations by 2040. "BPCL has drawn a net-zero roadmap, which encompasses renewable power, green hydrogen, compressed biogas, carbon capture, utilisation, and storage (CCUS), efficiency improvement and the offsets procurements. This would require a phased capital outlay of approximately Rs 1 lakh crore till 2040, and the company is geared for the same," he said. The firm's bet on continuing investing in core businesses is based on the premise that India's booming economy will drive a 4-5 per cent annual increase in energy demand and petroleum product consumption. Also, the demand for major petrochemical products is expected to rise by 7-8 per cent annually. "This presents a strategic opportunity to expand refining capacity alongside the development of integrated petrochemical complexes," he said. BPCL is implementing new petrochemical projects at two of its three oil refineries. A Rs 49,000 crore ethylene cracker project is being implemented at the Bina refinery in Madhya Pradesh, alongside raising oil refining capacity from the current 7.8 million tonnes to 11 million tonnes annually by 2029. A polypropylene project is being set up at Kochi refinery in Kerala by 2027. "To meet the anticipated demand beyond our planned expansions in Bina and Kochi, we are actively evaluating options for setting up additional integrated refining and petrochemical capacities within the next 5-7 years," Krishnakumar said without disclosing either the investments or the location of such a project. Andhra Pradesh is being speculated as the likely site after Prime Minister Narendra Modi's BJP and regional party TDP stormed to power in the state in recently concluded assembly elections. TDP has been demanding the implementation of a refinery-cum-petrochemical complex that was promised as part of the package when the state was split more than a decade back. "Our investment in the petrochemical project is consistent with our aspiration of becoming a dominant player in India's petrochemical growth story," Krishnakumar said. On energy transition, he said BPCL is targeting to build 2 gigawatts (GW) of <keyword id="19895602" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="renewable-energy" source="keywords">renewable energy</keyword> capacity by 2025 and 10 GW by 2035. "We are investing nearly Rs 1,000 crore to establish two 50 MW captive wind power plants in Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh, which will support our refineries in Mumbai and Bina." The firm is also investing around Rs 300 crore in 72 MWp of solar project in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh. "Concomitantly, we are executing green hydrogen projects aligned with the National Green Hydrogen Mission. These projects include a 5 MW electrolyser plant at Bina refinery and a green hydrogen refuelling station with an indigenously developed electrolyser at Kochi," he noted. BPCL, he said, is committed to supporting the transition to electric mobility through a robust and accessible charging infrastructure. The company has installed over 3,000 charging stations, including fast chargers for cars and two-wheelers. 900 fast chargers are installed across 120 highway corridors, which helps address the range, discovery and time anxiety of electric vehicle (EV) owners. "Over the next five years, we aim to install 4-wheeler fast chargers at approximately 6,000 retail outlets across 400 highway corridors, prioritising high-traffic corridors like the Golden Quadrilateral and N-S/E-W highways," he said. On biofuels, he said BPCL sells petrol with 20 per cent ethanol blend at 4,279 out of its over 22,000 petrol pumps. It is also building compressed biogas plants using municipal solid waste to make gas that can be used as CNG in automobiles. The firm is also exploring partnerships in the arena. "These combined efforts, along with the upcoming commissioning of a bio-ethanol refinery, positions BPCL as a key player in India's transition to a greener fuel mix, creating a robust ecosystem for the adoption of cleaner fuels across the country," he added. BPCL is establishing a corporate venture capital fund to invest directly in promising startups. "In order to thrive in this complex and challenging business landscape, we will leverage our agility and focus on operational excellence to ensure continued success. Safety and reliability will remain our top priorities, guiding all our actions. We are committed to upholding the highest standards of corporate governance," he added. He said the energy sector of India stands at an inflection point. "The nation has an ambitious vision of becoming a USD 30 trillion developed economy by 2047. 'Viksit Bharat @2047' will necessitate an almost fourfold increase in primary energy demand." India's exponential growth trajectory will propel it to a pivotal role in the global energy market, accounting for roughly 12 per cent of world energy consumption by 2047. "The key strategic objectives for India in the energy sector will entail significant expansion in refining capacities, raising the share of gas in the energy basket from about 6 per cent to 15 per cent, establishing leadership in petrochemical exports, and sharply reducing energy imports from current levels of 47 per cent to below 25 per cent by 2030 and to zero by 2047," he said. India is targeting 500 GW of non-fossil fuel energy capacity, sourcing half of its energy needs from renewables, reducing carbon emissions by 1 billion tonnes and lowering carbon intensity by 45 per cent by 2030 with the ultimate goal of net-zero emissions by 2070. "Building on its strong Indian energy presence, BPCL aspires to meet 7-10 per cent of the nation's primary energy demand by 2047," he said.

Union Budget 2024: When will it be presented, what time, where to watch and what are various sectors expecting?

Bharat Stage (BS) Emission Norms for the vehicles operated on the Indian roads was announced for the first time two decades back. These are considered the benchmarks in regulating how much pollutants the automobiles release in the air. BS VI refers to the sixth stage of the Bharat Stage Emission norms that will come into effect from 1 April 2020. The BS emission norms are based on the European emission norms and implement strict control over the emissions from vehicles. BS I was introduced in 2000 by the <keyword id="67999" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Central-Pollution-Control-Board">Central Pollution Control Board</keyword> under the Union Ministry of Environment, Forests, and Climate Change. This was followed by BS II in the year 2005, BS III in 2010 and BS IV in 2017. However, the wide spread alarms raised over the highly deteriorating condition of air pollution in the country has forced the government to skip the BS V and move straight away to BS VI. About BS VI (BS 6) Norms Referred to as the VI stage of Bharat Stage Emission norms, the main difference between the BS IV and the <keyword id="3165424" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="BS-VI-norms">BS VI norms</keyword> is the amount of sulphur content in the emissions. While BS IV compliant vehicles release 50 ppm (parts per million) sulphur, the BS VI compliant vehicles will only release 10 ppm sulphur. Also for the light duty diesel vehicles, the BS VI norms cut down the oxides of nitrogen emission limits. In case of light duty petrol vehicles, the emission of oxides of nitrogen are reduced by about 25 percent. In case of light duty diesel vehicles, BS VI has also introduced heightened particulate matter (PM) emission standard placing an upper limit of 6 X 1011 /km. For the light duty gasoline vehicles, the PM and PN limits have been specified as part of BS VI while they are applied only in case of vehicles that are reported with direct injection <keyword id="240487" type="DOMAIN" weightage="20" keywordseo="engines">engines</keyword>. BS VI also comes with a critical change in the approval procedures for light duty vehicles. It has mandated that portable emissions measurement systems (PEMS) be used for the purpose of in-service commission testing. This will help ensure the emissions performance recorded during the laboratory testing is also maintained during the real world driving conditions. Implementation of BS VI in India In 2018 October, the Supreme Court banned the sales of BS IV vehicles which should never be seen in the market from April 1, 2020. The Supreme Court has also said strictly that there will not be any grace time given to the vehicle manufacturers to sell the vehicles that are not in compliance with the BS VI norms after this deadline. So we can say the BS VI norms will take effect from April 1, 2020. In order to comply with the BS VI norms, the vehicle manufacturers need to invest in technology that will let them upgrade the vehicle they already have with them in stock. Also, they will have to move to the new technology to make the new vehicles in compliant with the BS VI standards.

What are BS VI Norms?

<ul><li>The SC allowed registration of <keyword id="142302" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="BS-IV">BS-IV</keyword> vehicles, which were sold before the <keyword id="8902499" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="nationwide-lockdown">nationwide lockdown</keyword> in March, but couldn't get the registration process done.</li><li>The apex court noted that only those vehicles would be registered whose details were uploaded on the government's Vahan portal.</li><li>The <keyword id="6799687" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="BS6-emission-norms">BS6 emission norms</keyword> were brought into effect in April 2020. But, the transition has not been as smooth as it was expected to be due to the <keyword id="8595403" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Coronavirus-outbreak">coronavirus outbreak</keyword> in the country. </li></ul><keyword id="1346916" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="The-Supreme-Court-of-India">The Supreme Court of India</keyword> on Thursday allowed registration of BS-IV vehicles, which were sold before the nationwide lockdown in March, but couldn't get the registration process done due to the coronavirus induced lockdown period. Following the appeal by the automotive industry, the Supreme Court on July 8 recalled its previous order (of March 27), which allowed the sale of BS-IV vehicles for ten days across India, except in Delhi National capital region (NCR), post lockdown. But it turned out that dealerships ended up selling more BS-IV vehicles than the court permitted, after which the court had to ban registration of BS-IV vehicles in India temporarily. Back then, it said it would have to examine whether these transactions were "genuine" or "backdated". What are BS-VI norms? Supreme Court allows registration of BS-IV vehicles bought before lockdown

New Delhi, A meeting of the Subject Expert Committee (SEC) of the <keyword id="170943" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Central-Drugs-Standard-Control-Organisation">Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation</keyword> (CDSCO) is currently underway to discuss the permission sought by vaccine developer <keyword id="149108" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bharat-Biotech">Bharat Biotech</keyword> to conduct <keyword id="83911" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Clinical-trials">clinical trials</keyword> of its <keyword id="9985444" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="intranasal-vaccine">intranasal vaccine</keyword> for the <keyword id="1754604" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="coronavirus">coronavirus</keyword>. Days after getting the Drugs Controller General of India's nod for restricted emergency use of India's first indigenously-made <keyword id="8624004" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="coronavirus-vaccine">coronavirus vaccine</keyword>, Bharat Biotech had applied to the drug regulator for permission to start Phase 1 and 2 trials of their nasal coronavirus vaccine. The nasal vaccine is different from the intramuscular vaccine which recently got approval, as it is non-invasive, needle-free, doesn't require trained healthcare workers, eliminates needle-associated risks, suits children and adults and has scalable manufacturing. Clinical trials of Bharat Biotech's 'BBV154' - a novel adenovirus vectored intranasal vaccine for coronavirus -- will be conducted at various locations, a top source privy to the development told IANS. The vaccine will be single-dosed. According to the firm, an intranasal vaccine stimulates a broad immune response at the site of infection, in the nasal mucosa, which is essential for blocking both infection and transmission of Covid-19. The vaccine has demonstrated protective efficacy in mice and hamsters. Mice and hamsters immunised with its single-dose were conferred superior protection against SARS-CoV-2 challenge, "more so than one or two intramuscular immunisations of the same vaccine and dose". "Thus, intranasal immunisation of ChAd-SARS-CoV-2-S can create an immune response in the nose, which is the point of entry for the virus, thereby protecting against disease, infection and transmission," Bharat Biotech said in a statement. On January 3, two intramuscular vaccines - Bharat Biotech's Covaxin and Oxford-AstraZeneca's Covishield manufactured by Serum Institute of India - were approved for restricted emergency use and have been administered to over three lakh people till now. Both are two-dose vaccines. While the full efficacy of Covaxin is yet to be determined, it was given go-ahead by the DCGI citing 'public interest'. Covaxin is an indigenously developed vaccine by Bharat Biotech, in collaboration with the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR). Public health experts believe that intranasal vaccines for coronavirus, administered through the nose rather than muscles, can be a potential gamechanger in India's fight against the coronavirus pandemic. Last month, Pune-based Serum Insititute of India and Codagenix Inc had announced that they have received regulatory approval in the UK to begin an early-stage trial of their single-dose, intranasal coronavirus vaccine. As per the Supreme Court Order, Indian market will see only the sale of BS VI compliant vehicles from April 1, 2020. These new emission control standards being introduced in India will need widespread measures in terms of emission control, automotive electronics, fuel-grade and ECU changes. While the Bharat Stage Emission norms mainly focus on minimizing the pollutant emissions from the vehicles run on the Indian roads, the standards of the VI stage of these norms coming under the title BS VI will call for a drastic change in the technology adopted by the India vehicle manufacturers. The implications of BS VI norms Once these norms come into effect, the emission levels in India will come on par with the emissions standards in the European countries and the US. This also marks a major advancement in the vehicle manufacturing technology in India which will match with the other advanced automotive technologies seen across the globe. Bharat Stage VI norms will demand a host of technology modifications the most important one being the implementation of OBD (on-board diagnostics) a mandatory feature for all the vehicles. The need for India to move to the BSIV to BS VI norms India is a vast country with 10 highly populated cities. This is a qualification that we might not feel happy to boast of considering the alarming amount of pollutants the vehicles of the country release on the Indian roads. In the Indian cities, the vehicular emissions are major contributors to the worsening of air quality. Studies show that the release of NOx, SO2, CO2 and other particulate matters take a toll on the health of Indians. For instance, the PM2.5 levels in a city like Delhi is 6 times more than what is allowed by the WHO. Following the Paris Climate Agreement signed by India in 2016, India has taken the responsibility to cut down its carbon footprint by 35-55% within the next 12 years from what was recorded in 2005. The BS VI norms will see the NOx emissions come down by 25% approximately in case of petrol engines and 68% in case of diesel engines. The PM emissions for diesel engines will come down by 80%. Technology changes that BS VI demand The OEMs cannot just add some additional components in the manufactured vehicles to reduce the emissions. If Euro VI compliant DPF needs to be fitted in a small diesel car made in India, the bonnet size will have to increase by exceeding the 4 meters mark. In case of natively developed OEMs like Mahindra and TATA, the new standards will have to be implemented in their line of vehicles with utmost perfection. Since this technology has to be multiplied over hundreds of platforms, the challenge seems to be higher. In order to control the PM and NOx emissions, the OEMs will need to implement various kinds of technologies like fitting Diesel particulate filter (DPF) in the vehicles to expel particulate matters from the gas exhausted. For reducing the NOx emission, selective catalytic reduction (SCR) and <keyword id="854698" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="exhaust-gas-recirculation">exhaust gas recirculation</keyword> (EGR) need to be used.

This vision rests on something called vehicle-to-grid technology, or V2G. Experts like Matthias Preindl, an electrical engineering professor at Columbia University, also anticipate that V2G could help wean the country off dirty energy sources. Participants will also need to get paid by utilities for their contributions, he said. A more feasible use case for V2G in the short term could be with large fleets, Meintz said. Amazon, for example, has the money and sway to work with utilities, vehicle makers, and charging companies to iron out the kinks. <h2>EVs are already helping out the grid on a small scale</h2>Highland Electric Fleets, which provides electric buses and charging infrastructure to school districts, has experimented with V2G as another revenue source since 2021. This summer, its two V2G-enabled school buses in Massachusetts pushed power to the grid almost daily to help the local utility handle periods of high energy consumption, Sean Leach, the firm's director of technology, told Insider. Suzuki just lost nearly $2 billion in 2 days because of what’s happening in India

New Delhi, Jan 30 () India's steel demand is likely to more than quadruple in the next 30 years, resulting in rise in carbon dioxide emissions by around 600 million tonnes, a report by the think-tank The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) said on Thursday.
The report, released on the second day of the 20th edition of World Sustainable Development Summit 2020, a TERI flagship event, said the CO2 emissions from India's steel sector could increase up to 837 million tonnes (MT) by 2050 if steel demand continues to grow, "having serious implications for the environment through its contribution to climate change."
"India's steel demand will more than quadruple from around 111 million tonnes to 489 million tonnes. The carbon dioxide emissions from the sector are projected to go from 242 MT to 837 MT.
"This is equivalent to around 35 per cent of India's total current carbon dioxide emissions from fossil fuel combustion and industry, which would be incompatible with limiting the worst effects of climate change," said the report titled 'Towards a Low Carbon Steel Sector: Overview of the Changing Market, Technology, and Policy Context for Indian Steel'.
The report on Low Carbon Steel has been prepared by the Energy Transitions Commission (ETC) India, a research platform based in TERI in New Delhi.
TERI has suggested a comprehensive package of measures that would keep the sector competitive while reducing its environmental impacts.
The report recommends maximising the use of domestic scrap and deploying energy efficiency measures, as well as facilitating greater resource efficiency throughout the economy. 
"This can start by building on the progress under the Perform, Achieve and Trade scheme and India's upcoming Resource Efficiency Strategy. This can be achieved cost-effectively, helping make the steel sector, and the Indian economy more competitive. Combining greater energy and resource efficiency could lead to a reduction in emissions by up to 45 per cent," the report said.
The report also suggests establishing pilot and demonstration plants to test emerging low-carbon technologies.
"TERI expects that by the 2040s, more radical decarbonisation technologies, which are currently in the demonstration stage, would be commercially available in India. 
"Of particular interest is the substitution of coal or natural gas as a reducing agent with hydrogen, allowing India to reduce its import dependency and reduce emissions," it said. 
The report also recommends stimulating the demand for low-carbon steel, through developing standards, public procurement schemes, or voluntary buyers' clubs. 
It also suggests introducing a penalty for emissions in steel sector, 2030 onwards, to send a clear signal to the industry to start planning for deeper decarbonisation technologies.
"Measures such as these could put the sector on a pathway to reduce emissions to near zero levels soon after 2050, making India the first country to industrialise while decarbonising its steel production," it said. AG AG ABH
