Think again. Bharat has gone high-end, and now most cities be it Baroda, Budaun, Indore, Nagpur or Udaipur — are where mall developers are crowding to. In with the trend are not just Indian brands but foreign brands want to go where they see ‘growth’. When it comes to store opening both fashion, cars or even fast food chains, they all want to grow across metros and smaller cities — on an almost equal footing. For luxury car brands, small is the new big. Companies like BMW, <keyword id="25952" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="mercedes-benz" source="Orion">Mercedes-Benz</keyword>, <keyword id="75789" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="lamborghini" source="Orion">Lamborghini</keyword>, and others are eyeing smaller towns and cities like Ludhiana, Kanpur, Surat, etc. to drive up their volume growth in India. By selling an average number of 40,000 units annually, luxury carmakers make up less than 2% of the entire passenger vehicle market in the country-as compared to 13% penetration in China and 10 per cent in the US. They are now hoping to drive up sales by penetrating deeper into the Tier-II and Tier-III markets in the country. According to top luxury players in India, non-metro cities could drive significant sales volumes owing to an emergence of young entrepreneurs from these places. M&amp;S has opened a store each in Ranchi, and Kochi has just gotten its second store like Baroda. It’s also present in Surat, Coimbatore, Bhubaneswar and Guwahati. "Even though growth in Tier 1 cities has not yet exhausted, Tier 2 cities are growing much faster. At present, 40 out of our 100 stores are in Tier 2 cities. Provided the right locations come up in these cities, we will look at more stores in these cities," Ritesh Mishra, MD of Marks and Spencer Reliance India told Business Insider India. Yet another UK based fashion retailer Pepe Jeans India also said that it plans to open around 30 new stores every year. Of that, a majority would be in smaller cities. “We have not covered many Tier 2 cities, and they also provide higher avenues to growth,” said Manish Kapoor, CEO &amp; MD of Pepe Jeans India told Business Insider India. Thanks to exposure to the internet, the small town consumers are just as fashion forward as their metro consumers. “Their exposure to brands, fashions and international styles is on par with the metro consumers,” said Kapoor. Online presence also helps these brands service many more pin codes across the country. Mishra agrees, and adds that there is not much of a difference between the consumers in Tier 1 and Tier 2 cities except that the basket value in the smaller cities may be a tad lower. They also intend to reach more pin codes via e-commerce, taking their style and substance to all of India that wants it. For a long time, smaller cities have been smaller markets for large brands. But what’s changed in the last few years, the number of middle income households are changing. Their incomes are growing on-par too. According to consumer insights company Kantar, all-India urban average monthly household income has been growing at 8.4% for the last five years. In Tier 2 and tier 3 cities, it has been growing a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 7.8%. More money to spend The discretionary wallet share of a smaller city consumer is also higher, argues Kapoor. “For example, take a person who earns ₹1 lakh per month in Bombay, he or she would spend ₹40,000-45,000 on rent and then some more on commuting and other essentials. Then take a person who earns ₹50,000 pm in Lucknow — all the aforesaid expenses will be under ₹25,000,” he explains. Moreover, the new generation of consumers – be it millennials or GenZs – are focussed on experiences, consumption and self-care. That’s bringing about a marked change in the traditional mindset of people — all manna for brands. “Earlier people would feel guilty of spending, now the new generation thinks — Why not? What else do we earn for?” sums up Kapoor, profiling the consumers they’re going after in smaller towns, who wouldn’t flinch before spending ₹5,000 on a pair of jeans. Unlike their apparel counterparts, they are a tad more careful about their approach. Quick service restaurants (QSR) are more of a habit where even consumers with chunky wallets seek value. “We have to be strategic with the value we provide. We have offers like one plus one meals, My Box which is a meal for one. But we are also appealing to local tastes. One of our innovations is Dhabe Da <keyword id="4821660" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="keema-pizza" source="Orion">Keema Pizza</keyword>, the way a small town consumer would think is, we are used to it, let’s see how it tastes on a pizza whereas a big city consumer would see it as a fusion menu,” Pereyra explained. Foreign brands bet big on Bharat’s bulging wallets

If you have been waiting for a drop in the price of your favourite luxury car, now is the time to bring it home. For Delhi buyers, a <keyword id="25952" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Mercedes-Benz">Mercedes-Benz</keyword> Maybach, one of its most luxurious cars, is now available with a price drop of as much as Rs 7 lakh. Several such ‘Made in India’ luxury vehicles have seen a drop in their prices, since manufacturers are offering lower prices to keep sales momentum going before <keyword id="6359833" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Goods-and-Services-Tax">goods and services tax</keyword> (<keyword id="6354679" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="GST">GST</keyword>) gets implemented in July this year. Since after GST the tax levied on this segment is expected to go down, buyers could be postponing buying luxury vehicles to post GST period. The companies, however, don’t want their sales to go down in this period, hence the attractive offers including lower prices and better finance schemes. For Mercedes-Benz, the entire range of ‘Made in India’ vehicles has seen an average price cut of 4%. Similarly, <keyword id="6355119" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="BMW">BMW</keyword> is also offering a series of benefits, like price and financing benefits, complimentary service and maintenance for three years, free insurance for the first year, and assured buyback for up to four years. Cars and SUVs have been placed in the highest GST slab of 28%, on top of which there would be a cess of 1-3% on small cars and 15% on large vehicles. However, the current levies on luxury vehicles go up to 55%, which means after GST, these cars would have lesser taxes of to 12%. Tesla partnership reports send stocks of these three companies rallying up to 11%

India's largest automobile company by sales, <keyword id="42747" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Tata-Motors">Tata Motors</keyword> will see its first high-profile exit this year as <keyword id="1387239" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Vinod-Sahay">Vinod Sahay</keyword>, head of sales and marketing for intermediate and medium and heavy commercial vehicles division, has resigned. He will join <keyword id="6357096" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Mahindra-Mahindra">Mahindra &amp; Mahindra</keyword>'s two-wheelers division in July as <keyword id="136383" type="POSITION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Chief-Operating-Officer">chief operating officer</keyword>, according to an Economic Times report. 

	A Tata Motors spokeswoman has confirmed the resignation and said he would be replaced by Rajesh Kaul, business head of CVLCV &amp; SCV Cargo. 
 

	Sahay is currently serving his notice period and the last working day for him at Tata Motors will be June 30. He is set to take up a senior position at Mahindra &amp; Mahindra's two-wheelers division, people familiar with the development told the financial daily. 
 

	Moreover, a Mahindra &amp; Mahindra spokesman said Sahay will join its two-wheelers as chief operating officer in July and will be responsible for sales, marketing, product planning, exports, manufacturing and quality. 
 

	According to industry experts, his exit will leave a big void for Tata Motors to fill as Sahay, apart from heading the bigger truck division, was also leading several other strategic initiatives of the commercial vehicles business unit, such as key account management, analytics project, scenario planning, sectorial as well as telematics and loyalty programmes. 
 His exit happens at a critical time for Tata Motors as the company faces intense competition from the world's top two truck makers, <keyword id="86015" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Daimler">Daimler</keyword> through its Indian subsidiary <keyword id="1489658" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Bharat-Benz">Bharat-Benz</keyword> and <keyword id="6359474" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Volvo">Volvo</keyword> through its joint venture in India with Eicher, as well as the Hinduja group's <keyword id="6357085" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Ashok-Leyland">Ashok Leyland</keyword>. Tata Motors has already seen its overall <keyword id="34527" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="market-share">market share</keyword> fall by 10% in the last few years. However, the company has creditably held on to its high share of 55% in the medium and heavy commercial vehicles space in the past one year. 

	Sahay successfully led the creation and execution of Tata Motors' turnaround strategy for the light commercial vehicles business in 2003-2005. He is also being credited for insulating the largest region of North from the shock during the recession years of 2008-09. 
 

	An alumnus of Symbiosis Institute, Sahay has more than 15 years of experience in the automobile industry in areas of strategy, business management, sales and marketing, product management, and channel management.

Business Insider verified this from the government’s motor vehicle portal, Homologation Vahan Seva. “The tests ensure that the vehicle matches the requirements of the Indian market in terms of emission and safety and road-worthiness as per the Central Motor Vehicle Rules,” the website says. Tesla inches closer to its India debut as four models approved

It’s British luxury car unit Jaguar Land Rover’s sales seem to be stabilsing. At least, that’s what the street believes. After three years of having a ‘SELL’ rating, Tata Motors has finally been upgraded to ‘BUY’ rating by global broking firm CLSA. Tata Motors’ share price spiked over 13% after the company’s second-quarter earnings.

 Between July and September 2019, Tata Motors reported a net loss of ₹216.5 crore but that was still a massive improvement from the same quarter in the previous year⁠— when the loss was nearly five times more. For the quarter ending in September, Jaguar Land Rover retail sales nearly the same (down 0.7%) as a year earlier⁠— but the losses were less because the company had cut costs. Jaguar Land Rover saw a 24.3% jump in its sales in China, which is a big market for the company. “JLR’s volume is showing signs of bottoming-out on a low base in China and the ramp-up of the recently upgraded Evoque model—the start of defender sales in 4QFY20 should provide a further boost,” the CLSA report said. Earlier this year, global rating agencies Fitch Ratings and Moody’s both had downgraded Tata Motors with a negative outlook. In June 2019, Jaguar Land Rover retail sales was down by 9.6% as compared to the same month the previous year. In May 2019 too, the company had seen a 12% decrease as compared to the same month in the previous year. “Against challenging market headwinds, for the third consecutive month we have achieved double-digit growth in China, benefitting from our local turnaround plan and performing ahead of the broader market. We have also outperformed shrinking markets in other regions,” said Felix Brautigam, Jaguar Land Rover Chief Commercial Officer in a statement. JLR cheer is spreading The market excitement is visible not just with Tata Motors’ share price but that of many ancillary companies in the business. For the <keyword id="34478" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="auto-industry">auto industry</keyword> which has been hit by a slowdown for a year now, the comeback of Tata Motors and JLR is a positive sign for many others. Stocks like Bharat Forge, Motherson Sumi, and Exide, which make parts for automobiles, are also celebrating what they believe is a light at the end of the tunnel. Motherson Sumi, the largest manufacturer of automotive wiring harnesses and mirrors for passenger cars, too saw its stock trading at a 10% jump on Tuesday afternoon.

"In terms of passenger vehicle sales, we have witnessed a similar off-take pattern to last year's Dhanteras day," Vinkesh Gulati, Vice President of the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA) told IANS.

Daimler has ambitious plans to run one of its largest factories entirely on renewable energy by 2018

If you are planning to junk your old car, there is a possibility that the government will offer discount up to 15% on new vehicles. 
 
The road transport and highways ministry has prepared a policy under which anyone voluntary scrapping their four-wheelers older than 12 years (pre-Bharat stage II vehicle) will get up to 15% discount (including manufacturer discount and rebate on excise duty) on new vehicles. 
 
This proposal comes amid automakers are hiking car prices after <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=arun+jaitley">Finance Minister Arun Jaitley</a> announced a ‘green tax’ in his <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=budget+2016">Budget 2016-17</a>. 
Under the proposed policy, commercial and passenger vehicles will be covered and while junking, a certificate will be issued. 
 
Reportedly, there are more than 40 lakh Pre BS-II four-wheeler vehicles in both commercial and passenger segment in India. 
 
This is a plan under modernisation of fleet as Pre-BS II vehicles are almost 10 times more polluting than BS V vehicles. 
 Meanwhile, <keyword id="44883" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Maruti-Suzuki">Maruti Suzuki</keyword> India, Mercedes Benz, Honda Cars India, <keyword id="596" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Hyundai">Hyundai</keyword> Motors and <keyword id="42747" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tata-Motors">Tata Motors</keyword> are hiking their car prices due to green tax.

However, smart hybrid models are exempted from the tax net. 
 
Honda Cars India also plans to raise prices in a range of Rs 4,000 to Rs 80,000. 
 
The infrastructure cess of 1-4 per cent proposed in the Budget will make cars pricier by Rs 2,000-80,000 for the mainstream models and up to Rs 4-5 lakh for luxury vehicles. 
 
Hyundai Motor is also raising prices from Rs 3000 on small car Eon to Rs 80000 on SUV Santa Fe. 
 
The government is going to impose 2.5 percent cess on diesel vehicles of length not exceeding 4 metre and engine capacity not exceeding 1,500 cc, while a cess of 4 per cent was imposed on higher engine capacity SUVs and bigger sedans.
