NEW DELHI: Some of the essential services related to banking, transportation, railways and electricity are likely to be impacted during a two-day nationwide strike called by a joint forum of central trade unions beginning Monday. Talking to PTI, All Indian Trade Union Congress General Secretary <keyword id="366518" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="amarjeet-kaur" source="Orion">Amarjeet Kaur</keyword> said, "We are expecting participation of over 20 crore formal and informal workers with mass mobilisation of workers across the country during the strike on March 28 and 29 to protest against government policies." She said that the strike is expected to hit the rural parts also, where informal workers of farming and other sectors will join the protest. The strike notices were given by workers' unions of various sectors such as coal, steel, oil, telecom, postal, income tax, copper, banks and insurance. Unions in railways and defence sector will carry out mass mobilization in support of the strike at several places, the joint forum said. The unions' demands include scrapping of the proposed changes in labour laws, privatisation of any form and the national monetisation pipeline. Increased allocation of wages under MNREGA (<keyword id="1194612" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="mahatma-gandhi-rural-employment-guarantee-act" source="Orion">Mahatma Gandhi Rural Employment Guarantee Act</keyword>) and regularisation of contract workers are also part of their demands. Workers of roadways, transport and electricity departments have also decided to join the strike in spite of the impending threat of ESMA (Essential Services Maintenance Act) which is likely to be imposed in Haryana and Chandigarh, the joint forum said in a statement. Trade unions, including INTUC, AITUC, HMS, CITU, AIUTUC, TUCC, SEWA, AICCTU, LPF and UTUC are part of the joint forum. Meanwhile, the <keyword id="6375040" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="power-ministry" source="Orion">power ministry</keyword> on Sunday advised all the state-run utilities and other agencies to be on high alert and ensure round-the-clock electricity supply and stability of the national grid. "The Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) have called for a nationwide strike with effect from 06:00 hrs of March 28 to 06:00 hrs of March 30, 2022," an advisory issued by the power ministry said. The advisory has been issued to all states, central public sector undertakings, central electricity authority, national load dispatch centre and regional load dispatch centres. In the interest of the consumers of electricity, it is advised that all the power utilities shall take necessary measures to ensure round-the-clock functioning of the electricity grid and availability of all plants, transmission lines and substations, the ministry said, adding that all regional/state control room executives should be vigilant and on high alert. The ministry also suggested measures to be taken to ensure secure and reliable grid operations. Shutdown activities planned during March 28-29 may be rescheduled to suitable future dates to the extent possible, it said and asked all concerned officials to ensure close supervision of their regional network/control area. Also, manpower may be deployed at all critical sub-stations/power station 24X7 to handle any emergency situation, it said. Power supply to those engaged in essential services such as hospitals, defence, and railways must be ensured, it added and suggested setting up of a 24x7 control room for information dissemination and handling any kind of contingency. Bank employees' unions said they will support the strike. All <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="India" source="Orion">India</keyword> Bank Employees' Association (AIBEA) General Secretary C H Venkatachalam said the union demands the government to stop privatisation of public sector banks and strengthen them. Bank employees also demand speedy recovey of bad loans, higher deposit rates by banks, lower service charges on customers as well as restoration of old pension scheme for staff. A number of public sector banks, including country's largest lender SBI, have said that their services may get impacted to a limited extent due to the strike. SBI said it has made necessary arrangements to ensure normal functioning in its branches and offices during the strike. "It is likely that work at our bank may be impacted, to a limited extent, by the strike," SBI said. The 'Bandh' will start at 8 am, and the chakka jams (road blockades) will be in force up to 3 pm across the country. Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Chandigarh, West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Odisha and Tamil Nadu are among the 12 states that have chalked out a plan for the 'Bharat Bandh' so far. The farmer leaders have decided to continue their sit-in until their first and major demand to repeal all three farm laws is not accepted. While the government was agreeable in the fifth government-farmer meet to do amendments to the three bills, farmers were pushing for these laws to be scrapped. These are the services that will be affected by 'Bharat Bandh' tomorrow: Transport services: Transport services are likely to be affected as some auto and taxi unions have decided to join Bharat Bandh. Many other associations are sympathetic towards farmers’ cause but are refraining from supporting the bandh. The general secretary of Delhi Auto Rickshaw Sangh, and Delhi Pradesh Taxi Union, Rajender Soni, said that many "important" auto, taxi and last-mile vehicle driver unions would not join the strike. Explaining further in a <a href="https://www.india.com/news/india/bharat-bandh-on-8th-december-2020-banking-services-milk-and-vegetables-supply-to-be-affected-all-you-need-to-know-4248831/">statement, </a>he said, "We fully sympathise with the farmers' struggle and support their demand. But the drivers of autos, taxis and Gramin Sewa and other last-mile vehicles are already hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic and can not afford to strike now." Banking services: Many bank unions including — The All India Bank Employees' Association (AIBEA) All India Bank Officers' Confederation (AIBOC), All India Bank Officers' Association (AIBOA) and Indian National Bank Officers' Congress (INBOC) have also expressed solidarity with the protesting farmers. Many bank employees will likely be joining the protest, therefore affecting the banking services on December 8. Shops and small businesses: Farmers said they have also appealed offices and shops to close for one day across the country, along with dairy suppliers and local transport operators. This could disrupt the supply of milk and vegetables. Emergency services and weddings exempted: Emergency and hospital services will continue unaffected. The farmer representatives from around 40 unions said that the weddings and emergency services including ambulances would be exempted from the nationwide protest. The Congress has decided to take out marches in every state, after which memorandums will be submitted to the respective governors on September 28 against these farm bills. Punjab and Haryana at the centre of farmer’s protest As many as 31 farmer organisations have joined hands for the 'Punjab Bandh'. Several organisations in Haryana, including the Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU), said they had extended support to the nationwide strike called by some farmers' bodies against the bills. Farmers in Punjab and Haryana will go on a strike today in protest against the contentious farm bills that were passed in the Parliament. Heavy police force has been deployed in both states to deal with any untoward situation. Even shopkeepers in most of the major towns in both the states shut their shops, expressing solidarity with the farmers. In Punjab, several trains have been suspended since September 24 as farmers began a three-day 'rail roko' campaign against the Bills. On September 24, Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh said he is ready to lead the political fight against the three anti-farmer bills passed in Parliament. The chief minister urged all political parties to rise above petty considerations and come on one platform to unitedly fight against the bills, which he said will destroy farmers. His remarks come a day ahead of the Punjab bandh announced by several farmer groups against the bills. The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), an ally of the BJP-led NDA government, announced a statewide 'chakka jam' to mark their protest. The SAD has been a longstanding ally of the ruling BJP. SAD's Lok Sabha MP and Sukhbir Badal's wife Harsimrat Kaur Badal, had resigned from the Union Cabinet on September 17, citing her party's opposition to the three Bills. In Tamil Nadu, members of some farmer organisations protested in Trichy and Tambaram on Friday morning. Led by Tamil Nadu Farmers' Association President P Ayyakannu, half-clad farmers held their protest outside the Collectorate in Trichy while carrying human skulls in their hands. They demanded that the Bills should not be made into law. Whereas, in Karnataka, members of the Karnataka State Farmers' Association on Friday held protests at various places against the three farm Bills passed in Parliament, which however has elicited a lukewarm response so far. Although the farmers begun a blockade since morning to register their protests at highways entry points in Bengaluru, it received a lukewarm response as vehicular movement in CBD areas was not affected much. Farm bills won't be implemented in Maharashtra, says Ajit Pawar

Amid widespread anger and protest over Centre's <keyword id="13558307" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Agnipath-scheme" source="Orion">Agnipath scheme</keyword>, the <keyword id="6354416" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="indian-army" source="Orion">Indian Army</keyword> on Monday issued notification for the first round of recruitment through the scheme. As per the notification, the registration for the recruitment rallies will start from July. "The registrations will be opened from July onwards by the respective <keyword id="1497108" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Army-Recruitment-Offices" source="Orion">Army Recruitment Offices</keyword> (ARO) for <keyword id="14193007" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="agniveer" source="Orion">Agniveer</keyword> General Duty, Agniveer Technical, Agniveer Technical (aviation/ammunition examiner), Agniveer clerk/store keeper technical, Agniveer tradesman (10th pass) and Agniveer Tradesman (8th pass) as per the ARO rally schedule", the <keyword id="15350" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="army" source="Orion">Army</keyword> notification reads. The notification released by the Indian Army broadly outlines terms and conditions of service, eligibility, discharge and other important information related to the scheme. "Agniveers enrolled under the scheme will not be eligible for any kind of Pension and Gratuity", said the notification issued on Monday. The service of the 'Agniveers' will commence from the date of enrolment. They would form a distinct rank in the Army, different from other existing ranks, it said further. The personnel enrolled under this scheme will be required to undergo periodical medical checkups along with physical/written/field tests as per orders, said the notification. The notification has come on a day when several groups called 'Bharat Bandh'. The national capital also witnessed traffic jams as the police have tightened security across the city and its bordering areas. Indian army issues first recruitment notice amid protest

These board exams are usually held in February and March, but this year their schedule has been changed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. "We had announced the proposed dates of the examinations on February 16 and invited suggestions from the stakeholders. After due consultation with them, we have fixed this final schedule of the exams," Bhosale said. Maharashtra to conduct class X, XII exams from April 23 and April 29

A team of researchers has developed a tool to identify <keyword id="6355300" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="security">security</keyword> and privacy risks associated with <keyword id="10837159" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="covid-19-contact-tracing-apps">Covid-19 contact tracing apps</keyword>. "COVIDGuardian", the first automated security and privacy assessment tool, tests contact tracing apps for potential threats such as malware, embedded trackers and private information leakage. Using the "COVIDGuardian" tool, cybersecurity experts from <keyword id="1828955" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Queen-Mary-University-of-London">Queen Mary University of London</keyword> assessed 40 <keyword id="8763838" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="covid-19">Covid-19</keyword> contact tracing apps that have been employed worldwide for potential privacy and security threats. They found that 72.5 per cent of the apps use at least one insecure cryptographic algorithm. "Three quarters of apps contained at least one tracker that reports information to third parties such as Facebook Analytics or Google Firebase. While most apps were free of malware, the Kyrgyzstan app 'Stop Covid-19 KG' was discovered to have malware," the researchers said in a paper scheduled to be presented at the virtual International Conference on Software Engineering in May. "With the pandemic there was a rapid need for contact tracing apps to support efforts to control the spread of Covid-19. Unsurprisingly we found that this had resulted in some relatively mainstream security bugs being introduced worldwide," said Dr Gareth Tyson, Senior Lecturer at Queen Mary University of <keyword id="6354968" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="london">London</keyword>. Some of the most common risks relate to the use of out-of-date cryptographic algorithms and the storage of sensitive information in plain text formats that could be read by potential attackers. "Through COVIDGuardian we've produced a tool that can be used by developers to discover and fix potential weaknesses in their apps and share guidelines that will help to ensure user privacy and security is maintained," Tyson said. To support this work the researchers also performed a survey involving over 370 individuals to understand the likelihood that they would use a contact tracing app and highlight concerns around their use.
