According to latest reports, <a href="https://thewire.in/communalism/delhi-violence-mosque-set-on-fire-in-ashok-vihar-hanuman-flag-placed-on-top" data-type="tilCustomLink" target="_blank">a mosque was set on fire</a> (according to The Wire) and journalists were attacked by mobs. When asked about the escalating violence in Delhi, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/india/news/trump-says-i-do-not-want-to-discuss-caa-calls-pm-modi-a-tough-person/articleshow/74303346.cms" data-type="tilCustomLink" target="_blank">Trump evaded the question</a> saying he hadn't discussed the issue with the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Earlier in the day, some top leaders in Delhi including Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, Lieutenant Governor got into a huddle to discuss the issue.

 Meanwhile, 186 people have been injured while 10 have died in the violence in northeast Delhi which erupted on Sunday, according to <keyword id="6358992" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Delhi-Police">Delhi Police</keyword> spokesperson and the Assistant Commissioner of Police, Mandeep Singh Randhawa.  Randhawa also claimed that the situation is under control in Jaffrabad, Gokulpuri, <keyword id="3409958" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="maujpur">Maujpur</keyword> areas as the police and government are alert and security has been beefed up in the areas. He also denied media reports which said that the Delhi Police don't have enough police personnel to tackle the situation.

 The Delhi Police also confirmed that 11 first information reports (FIR) have been registered and several arrests have been made. Additional police forces and paramilitary forces have been deployed while senior Delhi police officials are also present at the spot to tackle the situation. The riots in Delhi were sparked on Sunday with an alleged clash between two sets of people, one that supported the country's new citizenship law that has already been passed by the Parliament and the other group that demands its rollback on grounds that it discriminates against the Muslims.

 Leaders of the ruling dispensation at the Centre, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), had threatened violence even before the clashes erupted. A day later, a 33-year old man by the name Sharukh, from the camp protesting the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, opened fire on a policeman. Another policeman, 42-year old Rattan Lal succumbed to the injuries from stone pelting as the tension escalated.

The violence in Delhi is exploding— at least 10 dead, a mosque burnt, and journalists attacked is making rest of India anxious

New <keyword id="66" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="delhi" source="Orion">Delhi</keyword>, A 36-year-old man, working as a senior <keyword id="6362609" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="manager" source="Orion">manager</keyword> with e-commerce giant <keyword id="18635" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="amazon" source="Orion">Amazon</keyword>, was shot dead in northeast Delhi's Bhajanpura area, police said on Wednesday. The incident took place at around 11.30 pm on Tuesday when five unidentified people opened fire at Harpreet Gill (36) and his relative Govind Singh (32) in Subhash Vihar. Shot in the head, Gill was pronounced brought dead by doctors at the Jag Pravesh Chandra Hospital, while his relative was under treatment, police said. Gill was a resident of Bhajanpura and worked as a senior manager with Amazon. The bullet entered from the right side of his head behind the ear and exited from the other side, Deputy Commissioner of Police (northeast) Joy Tirkey said. Singh lives in Bhajanpura too and owns an eatery in the area. He was also shot in the head and admitted to the Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Hospital, the DCP said. The duo was on a motorcycle when the assailants on a scooter and a motorcycle intercepted and opened fire at them, Tirkey said. Footage from CCTV cameras of the area is being analysed to identify the attackers, police said, adding that the reason behind the firing is being ascertained. A case of murder has been registered, police said. According to the police, six teams have been formed to work on the case. A preliminary probe has suggested that an argument broke out between the two sides before the shooting took place, police said. Singh told police that the assailants appeared to be in the age group of 18 to 19 years. During the investigation conducted so far, the name of a local criminal, Maya, has cropped up and he is one of the suspects, police said. Meanwhile, Gill's parents demanded justice for their son and strict action against his killers. "At around 10.30 pm on Tuesday, Harpreet told his mother that he was going out and would have dinner later. My brother-in-law was also with him when the incident took place," Karnail Singh, the father of the deceased, said. "My son had no enmity with anyone. He was a very hardworking man. I want my son back. We want justice for him," his mother said.

Amazon senior manager shot dead in Delhi

"My son Umar Khalid has been arrested tonight at 11 p.m. by Special Cell, Delhi Police under UAPA. Police was questioning him since 1 p.m. He has been implicated in Delhi riots," said Syed Qasim Rasool Ilyas, father of Umar Khalid. Khalid was summoned on Saturday and Sunday. He was arrested after being questioned for around 10 hours and will be produced before a Delhi court on Monday. Earlier on September 2, Khalid was called by the Crime Branch for questioning in the northeast Delhi riots case. He was let off after the questioning. The arrest comes hours after Delhi police issued a statement on Sunday in which it has asked those who have doubts and questions about the northeast Delhi riots probe to take legal course at the appropriate time. The Delhi police said that various interest groups are using social media platforms and other online portals to raise questions about the fairness of investigation of the northeast Delhi riot cases. Earlier, retired IPS officer Julio Ribeiro, who was former Mumbai police commissioner, DGP Gujarat and Punjab, and former Indian Ambassador to Romania, has written to Delhi Police Commissioner S N Shrivastava, questioning the probe into the northeast Delhi riots cases. Since December, Delhi was brimming with tensions after the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) was passed. A sit-in protest against it started at various parts of the national capital. An agitation also started near Jafrabad metro station in northeast Delhi. The protests in northeast Delhi turned violent and around 53 people were killed. Delhi Police arrests Umar Khalid in connection with Northeast Delhi riots

New Delhi, Jul 6 () A 37-year-old journalist undergoing treatment for COVID-19 at the AIIMS Trauma Centre died after allegedly jumping off the fourth floor of the hospital building on Monday afternoon, police said. The journalist worked with a Hindi daily and was a resident of northeast Delhi's Bhajanpura, they said. The incident took place at around 2 pm and the man was rushed to the hospital's ICU where doctors tried to revive him, a doctor said on condition of anonymity. According to Devender Arya, Deputy Commissioner of Police (southwest), the journalist was admitted to the COVID-19 ward at the Trauma Centre on June 24 after testing positive for the virus. "He was admitted to AIIMS Trauma Centre on June 24 and was apparently shifted to a High Dependency unit at the hospital. He was admitted on the first floor," a source at AIIMS said. New Delhi, Jul 6 () A 37-year-old journalist undergoing treatment for COVID-19 at the AIIMS Trauma Centre here died after allegedly jumping off the fourth floor of the hospital building on Monday afternoon, officials said. The journalist used to work for a Hindi daily and was a resident of northeast Delhi's Bhajanpura, they said. The incident took place around 2 pm. The man jumped from the fourth floor of the Trauma Centre and was shifted to ICU, Devender Arya, Deputy Commissioner of Police (southwest) said. Doctors at the Trauma Centre, which has been converted to a dedicated COVID-19 facility, tried to revive him but he succumbed to the injuries, the hospital authorities said. AIIMS issued a statement that said the journalist was admitted to AIIMS Jai Prakash Narayan Apex Trauma Centre on June 24 with COVID-19. He was making significant recovery from COVID symptoms. He was stable on room air on Monday and was planned for shifting to a general ward from the ICU, it said. He earlier had a surgery for frontal lobe meningioma (a type of brain tumour) at the G B Pant hospital New Delhi in March 2020. "While he was at the Trauma Centre for treatment of COVID-19 he was having bouts of disorientation for which he was seen by a neurologist and psychiatrist and put on medication. "The family members were regularly counselled regarding his condition. At around 1.55 pm today, he ran out of TC-1 where he was admitted. Hospital attendants ran after him and tried to stop him. He ran to fourth floor where he broke a window pane and jumped out," the hospital said in the statement. The reporter was immediately moved to the ICU in Trauma Centre in an ambulance. He was intubated and resuscitation was tried but unfortunately, he succumbed to injuries at 3.35 pm, it added. AMP/PLB IJT

37-yr-old journalist undergoing treatment for COVID dies by suicide at AIIMS Trauma Centre

New Delhi, Jul 7 () A media body on Tuesday demanded a judicial inquiry into the death of a 37-year-old journalist undergoing treatment for COVID-19 at the AIIMS Trauma Centre here after he allegedly jumped off the fourth floor of the hospital building. In a statement, the Press Association, a media body of accredited journalists, also appealed to the government to sanction funds to the next of kin of the deceased as help in this grave crisis. Journalist Tarun Sisodia worked for a Hindi daily and lived with his wife and two children in northeast Delhi's Bhajanpura. Sisodia jumped from the fourth floor of the Trauma Centre on Monday and was shifted to the ICU, Devender Arya, Deputy Commissioner of Police (southwest) had said. The police has said that they initiated inquest proceedings. Doctors at the Trauma Centre, which has been converted into a dedicated COVID-19 facility, tried to revive him but he succumbed to the injuries, hospital authorities had said. In letters to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Health Minister Harsh Vardhan and Information and Broadcasting Prakash Javadekar, the Press Association demanded a judicial inquiry into the incident which can bring the truth to light. Following the incident, Health Minister Vardhan had asked the AIIMS director to set up a panel to probe the matter. "I ordered AIIMS Director to immediately constitute an official inquiry into this incident, following which a high-level committee has been set up &amp; shall submit its report within 48 hours," he had tweeted. The Press Association said the inquiry that the government has ordered consisting of department heads of AIIMS, may not be appropriate since the incident happened in the institute. Sisodia was the sole bread earner in his family and is survived by his wife and two young daughters, it said. The government should sanction funds to the next of kin of the deceased, the statement said. By Gunjan Sharma New Delhi, Apr 7 () With all lessons revised and new stationary bought, 14-year-old Ravi Kumar was ready to spend a relaxed evening before his class 10 board exam the next day when the news of communal violence in northeast Delhi broke, ultimately leading to postponement of the exam by CBSE in affected areas.But, for the students in northeast Delhi, the wait for the exams has become an "test of patience" with it being postponed again, this time due to the coronavirus outbreak, and no clarity emerging yet on when the exams will be held.Rani Kumari says that while trying to concentrate on studies amid the fear of knock on doors during the communal violence over the amended citizenship law that brought northeast Delhi to a standstill, she was confident that "this too shall pass"."It has become an endless wait and now I don't feel like studying too. Earlier I thought that this too shall pass. How much can one study the same thing over and over again? May be I will begin revision when the date sheet is announced," said the class 12 student from Maujpur who wants to join nursing school.Kumar, a resident of Chandbagh, told , "Right from childhood, we are taught that board exams are too crucial and have to be focussed at least two years in advance. It all seems immaterial now, the entire enthusiasm is gone. Bigger than board exams now is this exam of patience."Gagandeep Singh, who lives in Gokalpuri area, said, "I think I will remember how disturbed I was during my class 10 exams all my life. The stress of exams and scoring well seems immaterial now, when we are facing riots and global pandemic."In February, the northeast part of the national capital was rocked by violence in which 53 people were killed and over 200 injured. The areas worst affected in the violence included Jaffrabad, Maujpur, Chand Bagh, Khureji Khas and Bhajanpura.In view of the violence, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) had postponed exams at over 80 centres in northeast Delhi area till February 29.The exams were, however, conducted as per original schedule from March 2 onwards as board officials opined that any further delay in conducting exams will affect the students' prospects in undergraduate admissions.The board had announced a fresh schedule, according to which class 12 exams in the area were supposed to begin on March 31 and conclude on April 14, while exams for class 10 were scheduled from March 21 to March 30.However, the exams had to be again postponed in view of the coronavirus outbreak its resultant 21-day nationwide lockdown.According to board officials, students will be given a 10-day notice before exams are conducted when the lockdown is lifted.The death toll due to novel coronavirus rose to 114 and the number of cases in the country climbed to 4,421 on Tuesday, according to the Union Health Ministry. For three days now, India’s national capital has been the centre of violence and communal clashes, with mobs running wild on the streets and Muslim-majority areas under attack. Localities like Chand Bagh, Bhajanpura, Maujpur-Babarpur, and Jaffrabad are witnessing the most violence. Srivastava’s appointment came in place as the rapid rise in death toll shocked the nation. Currently, as many as 17 people have died as mobs attacked each other with guns, petrol bombs, stones and iron rods. Over 150 have been brought injured to GTB Hospital, and fire services and ambulances are running furiously all over the city for two days now. Right after his appointment, Srivastava attended an emergency meeting with the Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Srivastava was called out from the Central Reserve Police Force to take over in Delhi. He held the position of Special Director General (Training). Since his appointment as the Special Commissioner, a shoot-at-sight order was issued in Yamuna Vihar on Tuesday night. Late in the night on Tuesday, Patnaik along with National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval reached Seelampur in North East Delhi to take stock of the situation. Early in the morning on Wednesday, water cannons were sprayed by the Delhi police on protestors who had gathered in front of the Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s residence. Srivastava is from the 1985 batch of AGMUT cadre – a common cadre for Arunachal Pradesh, Goa, Mizoram and union territories. He is a batchmate of the incumbent Delhi police commissioner Patnaik. In 2017, he was also considered to be in the running for the <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/delhi/1985-batch-ips-man-new-tihar-boss/articleshow/60888285.cms">Director General</a> position of the Tihar Jail but was reportedly not keen on the job. Srivastava is known for being a hard taskmaster with a no nonsense approach. In 2015, Srivastava held the position as Chief of Delhi Police’s elite anti-terror unit but was transferred to the Recruitment Cell and Delhi Armed Police 3rd Battalion. His transfer had come at a time when he was being criticised for the arrest of Liaquat Shah. According to <a href="https://indianexpress.com/article/cities/delhi/delhi-police-reshuffle-srivastava-moves-out-of-elite-anti-terror-unit/">reports</a>, the National Investigation Agency had recommended punishment for five officers from the anti terror unit for framing charges against Shah to make him look like a ‘suicide attacker’ from Hizbul Mujahideen.
