Friday the 13th! A joyous 'Bhai Dooj' for India, but a 'haunted' day for the West

These are two well-known festivals that even a kid raised in an Indian family would know about. Dhanteras is a popular tradition to purchase utensils, electronics and gold jewellery. On Bhai Dooj, sisters give special gifts to their brothers and pray for their well-being and long life. We all know that, yes. But did you know, these smaller events are actually a part of Diwali. Diwali is not a one-day festival. It’s actually a five-day long festival beginning with Dhanteras (Festival of Wealth), Naraka Chaturdasi (Day before Diwali also called Choti Diwali), Amavasya (New moon), Kartika Shuddha Padyami (Day after Diwali) and Bhai Dooj (ritual commemorating brother-sister relationships).

For years, we have stood in front of idols with folded hands on the festival of lights. By now, we know that Goddess Lakshmi is the show stealer but do we know why? Lakshmi Puja is performed on the following day of Amavasya, the new moon night. It is widely believed that Goddess Lakshmi’s destroyer form (marak form) is active on this day and she is in search of the cleanest house to bring an end to all negative energies and offer blessings of fortune and prosperity to the family. It is precisely this reason why a broom is kept when prayers are done and the house doors are left open to welcome the goddess. 
 
Cleaning the house before Diwali 
 
Just as mentioned above, mythology suggests goddess Lakshmi enters only the cleanest houses to give her blessings. That’s why you hear mothers hyperventilating looking at that dust-laced furniture and cloth-laden bed boxes! How will the goddess touch upon you with all that dirt! 
 
Lighting Diyas: 
 
Yes, it is to celebrate the homecoming of Shri Ram, but that’s not it! Goddess Lakshmi is believed to enter not only the cleanest, but also the brightest house. 
 
Making rangoli 
 
Rangoli is preferably smeared at the main entrance of the house in the form of both - a belief and a custom. They beautify the entrances in the houses, but are also believed to keep bad spirits at bay as well as curb negativity. It further attracts wealth, happiness as well as prosperity into the house. 
 
Playing Tambola/card games 
 
It’s not just for fun, there’s mythological significance to this. Firstly, playing card games during Diwali is believed to bring good luck and prosperity in the year ahead. But it is also believed that Goddess Parvati played dice with her husband Lord Shiva on this day. Elated with her victory, she announced that whoever gambled on Diwali night would mint wealth throughout the year. As Goddess Lakshmi is an incarnation of Parvati, she visits earth to bestow pecuniary benefits on anyone found gambling.

<keyword id="6358190" type="DEFINITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nitish-Kumar">Nitish Kumar</keyword> was on Monday sworn in as Chief Minister of Bihar for his fourth successive term. Governor Phagu Chauhan administered the oath to Kumar at the ceremony at Raj Bhavan. The National Democratic Alliance secured a majority in the October-November Assembly elections, winning 125 seats in the 243-member house. However, Nitish Kumar saw his Janata Dal-United's share slip to 43, while the BJP won 74 seats. Two smaller parties won eight seats. After taking oath as the chief minister of Bihar here on Monday, Nitish Kumar said he is missing his trusted colleague Sushil Kumar Modi in the new cabinet. Sushil Modi, who has been Deputy Chief Minister in Nitish Kumar's cabinets several times, hasn't been included in the cabinet this time. "We have a combination of old and new faces in the cabinet and we will work towards a better future for Bihar," Kumar said. Asked whether he was missing Sushil Kumar Modi this time, Kumar replied in the affirmative. Kumar took the oath on Monday, along with Tar Kishore Prasad and Renu Devi (likely to be deputy chief ministers) and 12 other ministers. These include Vijay Kumar Chaudhary, Mewa Lal Chaudhary, Ashok Chaudhary, Bijendra Prasad Yadav, Sheela Kumari, Mangal Pandey, Amarendra Pratap Singh, Ram Preet Paswan, Jivesh Kumar, Ram Surat Kumar, Santosh Kumar Suman and Mukesh Sahani. The new faces in Kumar's cabinet in 2020 are Jivesh Kumar, Ram Surat Kumar, Sheela Kumari, Santosh Kumar Suman and Mukesh Sahani. Former Maharastra CM Devendra Fadnavis said: "For the BJP, it's a generational change to promote new faces in the party. BJP has internal democracy and it's reflect through such a decisions. BJP gives opportunity to every leader. With this, the eventual goal is to strengthen party." He further said: "Sushil Kumar is an asset for the BJP. He served for party over 40 years and party will use his experience at right place." The NDA has included two women ministers Renu Devi and Sheela Kumari in the cabinet. Women are considered as silent voters for NDA and it has been mentioned PM Narendra Modi himself. "Nitish Kumar is like my elder brother. On the occasion of Bhai Dooj, I have got a great opportunity to work with him again. I will work in the interest of women as well as all other persons sitting in the last line. The eventual goal for me is to work on the lines of Aatmanirbhar Bihar," Renu Devi said.  The incarnation dramedy involves three brothers who are supposed to marry three sisters but things go haywire after one of the brothers ‘remembers’ their past. The film features Akshay Kumar, Riteish Deshmukh, Bobby Deol, Kriti Sanon, Kriti Kharbanda, Pooja Hegde and Chunkey Pandey. This is the fourth in the series of the heavily successful Housefull series whose stories revolve an ensemble cast, confusion---all in a large home. While all the other movies were directed by Sajod Khan, his involvement in the #metoo scandal, made the team bring in a new director to helm the project. This movie directed by Farhad Samji opened on October 25 to mixed reviews, but made nearly ₹19 crore on the first day. Its collections for Saturday and Sunday stood at ₹18.8 crore and ₹15.3 crore, respectively. As the festive fever continues with Bhai Dooj on Tuesday, the film is expected to continue its good run at the box office.  "The first three days of our film release were like paid previews. People have come despite the festive season and enjoyed the film.
