In a statement, it said compared to physically and psychologically battle-hardened Indian troops, Chinese troops mostly are from urban areas and not used to hardships or prolonged deployment under field conditions. The Army' Northern Command headquarters made these assertions reacting to China's official media Global Times reports that India's operational logistics is not geared up adequately and it will not be able to fight through winters effectively. "This can best be attributed to ignorance. Indian Army is fully prepared and more than capable of fighting a full-fledged war even in winters in eastern Ladakh," a Northern Command spokesperson said here. "India is a peace-loving country and wishes to have good relations with its neighbours. India always prefers to resolve issues through dialogue. While talks are in progress to resolve the border issues with China in eastern Ladakh, at the military level it is well prepared for the prolonged stand-off," he said. He said altitudes in Ladakh range from "high to super-high altitude" and there is a lot of snowfall - up to 40 feet after November. "Coupled with this, the temperature dipping down to minus 30 to 40 degree Celsius is a usual phenomenon. Wind chill factor makes matters even worse for the troops. The roads also get closed due to the snow. But despite all this, the most encouraging part for India is that the Indian soldiers have a huge experience of winter warfare and are psychologically tuned to operate at short notice," the spokesperson said. While these facts are known to the world, he said, adding the operational logistics capabilities, however, are hardly known. "Logistic capability relates to mobility, habitat and billeting, quality services for health, special rations, repair and recovery, heating systems, high-quality weapons, ammunition, quality clothing, and so on. While much of these capabilities existed earlier and troops could simply plug and play, a lot has also been boosted since May this year when China showed first signs of aggression," he said. The spokesperson said it is important to understand that the Army has the experience of Siachen, the highest battleground in the world, where conditions are much more demanding than the frontiers with China. "Traditionally there were two routes for moving into Ladakh, that is through Zojila (Srinagar-Leh Highway) and Rohtang Passes (Manali-Leh). Recently India commissioned a third road from Darcha to Leh which is much shorter distance-wise and less prone to closure," he said. The spokesperson said completion of Atal tunnel on the Rohtang route has force multiplied the logistic capacities. "In addition, we have a large number of airbases with the help of which we can maintain the Army well. Modern snow clearing equipment has also been placed on these routes to keep them open beyond November, thus giving us more time for daily maintenance of the troops," he said. The spokesperson said special fuel and lubricants for tanks and armoured personnel carriers have also been stocked adequately, including spares for their maintenance. "Water points and tube wells have been established for the troops and animals like mules and yaks. The living barracks have also been prepared which are comfortable and warm," he said. He said facilities such as the central heating system are some of the high points of these facilities. "Ammunition of various types including small arms, missiles and tank and artillery ammunition have also been adequately stocked. The medical system is also in place for any eventuality." The spokesperson said "China's concept has always been to win the wars without fighting, hence if they create conditions for war, they will come across better trained, better prepared, fully rested and psychologically hardened Indian troops. Now it's me. I'm farming," Rashid told <a href="https://www.facebook.com/watch/BusinessInsiderToday/470155010549573/">Business Insider Weekly</a>.About 7% of the world's saffron is harvested in the Indian-controlled union territory of Jammu and Kashmir, making India one of the top exporters since it gained control of part of the region in 1947. But saffron farmers like Rashid have struggled ever since India's government has put Kashmir on lockdown, imposing an internet blackout and region-wide curfews as well as stepping up its military presence. It's been more than five months since the lockdown begain in August, making it the <a href="https://www.insider.com/kashmir-internet-shut-down-imposed-india-longest-ever-by-democracy-2019-12">longest ever imposed in a democratic state</a>."During conflicts, a farmer cannot go to work. He cannot tend to his land, so that affects productivity," Rashid said.This year, life in Indian-administered Kashmir became even more unbearable.On August 5, Indian prime minister Narendra Modi <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2019/08/06/this-is-modi-governments-darkest-moment/">revoked Article 370</a> of India's constitution, ending decades of semi-autonomous rule for the Muslim-majority Kashmir.The Indian government sent in <a href="https://www.indiatoday.in/india/story/28-000-more-troops-deployed-in-kashmir-valley-1576280-2019-08-02">38,000 extra troops</a> to smother any signs of dissent, critics say. Modi also imposed a curfew, blocked roads, and shut off most forms of communication, including the internet.India's supreme court ruled on Friday that the indefinite internet shutdown is <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/india-top-court-proclaims-kashmir-internet-blackout-unconstitutional-2020-1">unlawful</a>, ordering the government to review the restrictions on the region. Additionally, the court ordered India's government to make public its orders on internet shutdowns, which the government deploys often. India has experienced <a href="https://internetshutdowns.in/">353 internet shutdowns</a> since 2016. The lockdown has enraged Kashmiris, and stifled businesses that rely on the internet."Many farmers, many product sellers in Kashmir used to sell their products on online websites like Amazon, Flipkart and other online websites," Sajad Rafeeq, a former saffron farmer, told Business Insider Weekly. "So when there's, you know, any kind of shutdown or when there's, you know, conflict and the communication is not good, so all of the industry gets affected."Recently, the Indian government has slowly begun restoring communications. Cellphone service returned in October, and on the first day of 2020, internet access was granted to government schools and hospitals, albeit with heavy restrictions. Most residents are still living without it. Experts are already noticing early consequences of the lockdown."The Kashmiris have always felt that they have a distinctive identity, especially the Muslims in the Valley and that had actually been written into the constitution," Sumit Ganguly, a political science professor at Indiana University, told Business Insider Weekly. "Now they feel that that special status, which had been eroded over time, has now been completely abrogated."<h2>Turmoil in the region dates back to more than 70 years ago.</h2>Turmoil in Kashmir started more than 70 years ago, when India and Pakistan <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2017/08/08/asia/india-pakistan-independence-timeline/index.html">gained their independence from the British</a> in 1947. The dispute over who controlled the former princely state of Jammu and Kashmir gave rise to three wars and other armed conflicts over the region.To this day, India blames Pakistan for stirring the unrest by backing separatist militants - a charge its neighbor denies.At least 4,000 people have died in violent clashes in Kashmir over the past decade or so - including 1000 Indian security forces, <a href="http://jkccs.net/">according to a nonprofit</a> based in the city of Srinagar. Still, in the past five months, it's gotten even harder to sustain commerce at every level.In October, unidentified gunmen <a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/us-india-kashmir-apples/suspected-militants-kill-two-in-indian-kashmir-set-apple-trucks-ablaze-idUSKBN1X328R">set fire to three apple trucks</a> in Indian Kashmir's Shopian district, killing two drivers and stoking more fear. Apple farming is the pillar of the region's economy, <a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/us-india-kashmir-apples/kashmir-apple-trade-picks-up-again-under-shadow-of-militant-attacks-idUSKBN1WX1LY">employing half of the population</a>, about 3.5 million people. In fact, 70% of India's apples came from Kashmir last year, <a href="https://www.latimes.com/world-nation/story/2019-10-28/india-kashmir-economy-crackdown">contributing $1.5 billion</a> to the Indian economy.But now, Kashmiri fruit traders like Maqbool Hussain say they're having trouble getting their produce to market."If nobody comes to buy apples from outside, then how will Kashmiri apples sell?" Hussain said. "We can't find anyone to work in the markets. Almonds are spoiling. Walnut sales have gone down by 60%."<h2>The fallout can be felt hundreds of miles away in neighboring Ladakh.</h2>The fallout from the conflict can also be felt hundreds of miles away from the violence, in the serene mountains of Ladakh, a neighboring region that's also administered by India. There, herders like Karma Takgol still <a href="https://www.utsavpedia.com/textiles/pashmina/">gather raw wool from Tibetan goats</a> the way they have since the 15th century."Old people say that the villages with the coldest weather have the best pashmina," Takgol told Business Insider Weekly.India officially split Ladakh from the rest of Jammu and Kashmir in October, creating a separate territory that is mostly Buddhist. The army maintains the only road connecting Ladakh to the rest of India.But no matter where the government draws its lines around Kashmir, what happens across the mountains can still be felt in the birthplace of the material that carries its name - cashmere - known locally as pashmina.As traditional industries have suffered because of the conflict, the Indian government has at times tried to support the local economy. A federal agency offered to buy up Kashmir's apple crop in October, but farmers said the rates were too low and many didn't take up the offer. The country's leaders also devised a plan a decade ago to help saffron growers combat drought, with a $57 million proposal to irrigate the land.But several farmers, including Gulam Rasool Bhat, told us the scheme has failed."The government promised proper irrigation. Funds were sanctioned and infrastructure built, but no actual assistance was provided," Bhat said. "They even charged us 5,000 rupees per acre for providing irrigation - still nothing was done."Now, Kashmiris say the Indian government's help cannot make up for the way that the heavy military presence, internet blackout, and curfews have upended the economy. Saffron farmers like Rashid said that "because of the conflict here, the curfew here, our ambitions remain unfulfilled.""Younger people feel angry that I want to increase the productivity of my land," he said. "We hope our desires will be fulfilled but the conflict and curfew here don't allow us to prosper."

The worst floods in recent memory in Jammu &amp; Kashmir washed away hopes and dreams, leaving death and destruction in its wake. Phones came handy in making distress calls before they too conked out, forcing many harried people stuck in swirling waters and their relatives at safer places to take to social media to post desperate messages for help. 
 Bollywood actor Aamir Bashir, best remembered for his role in A Wednesday, tweeted his cousin's family was stuck on their rooftop in Raj Bagh in Srinagar on Sunday before they were rescued. There were dozens of such desperate tweets and posts on social media. In one of them, London-based novelist-journalist <keyword id="1331944" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Mirza-Waheed">Mirza Waheed</keyword> posted his aunt and family were trapped in their house in Qamarwari before he lost contact with them. 
 
Kashmiris were united in grief across religious lines. Chandigarh-based Kashmiri student Japjyot Singh posted a heart-warming story of his family’s rescue from Raj Bagh. He wrote on Facebook his family was stuck on the second floor of their house and “were in a big danger". 
 
He added but no rescue team, no army came. His father’s shikara wala friend, Gul, came from the Dal Lake, around six-km away, to save his family. "…was thanking him he told beta so what if your dad is a Sikh he's my brother and I can die to save his life," posted Singh. 
 Many netizens posted locations of their relatives stuck in flood waters on <keyword id="6355629" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Google">Google</keyword> Maps to seek their rescue on Facebook and Twitter. 
 
Opposition People’s Democratic Party lawmaker Naeem Akhtar posted a desperate message seeking rescue of his friends and relatives including his uncle and noted poet, Farooq Nazki, and his wife, who were are marooned and out of touch. 
 
“Disaster has just unfolded itself. Going by the response to it, it could turn out to be a catastrophe. Have received frantic calls from friends, relatives and unknown people for help. One single demand is boats, the only life saving device needed now," he wrote on Sunday. 
 “Have spoken to everyone I know in administration but without success. Nobody picks up phones any more. Peer Ghulam Hassan Shah, the octogenarian legendary DGP and architect of <keyword id="108598" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="JK-police">J&amp;K Police</keyword>, is squeezed into his second storey with no help in sight." 
 
He added Dr Shafqat, his hands on physician, had spoken to him from the third floor of his house in Raj Bagh. “Shahid, my young friend who ran a volunteer service till last evening in Raj Bagh, is also drowning as he informed me in panic. Lots of relatives in the area." 
 Tech savvy chief minister <keyword id="19464" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Omar-Abdullah">Omar Abdullah</keyword>, who oversaw disaster management, updated people about rescue operations on Twitter. “Around 25 boats flown into Awantipura air base for South Kashmir rescue ops and are being sent to the affected areas," he tweeted on Sunday night. 
 
 
 
Earlier, he announced boats have begun rescuing people and operations would continue as long as needed. “The boats flown in from Delhi have been launched in Srinagar's worst affected areas of Indiranagar, Shivpura, Rajbagh." He acknowledged tweets for help he was receiving and assured: “We are trying our best.’’ 
 
He called floods “an unprecedented situation" and urged people not to panic while assuring: “We will reach you, I promise." 
 
Right-wing trolls as usual had a field day spewing venom, forcing a prominent Delhi-based journalist to tweet: “So now we have patriotic floods and anti-national floods, and patriotic disasters and anti-national disasters."

Social Media Keeps Hope Afloat In Flood-Hit J&K

Bridges snapped, houses flooded, lives lost and army working round-the-clock to rescue people who had taken shelter on rooftops, terraces, any place that saved them from the gushing floodwaters. The crown of India, the picturesque valley of <keyword id="17605" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Jammu-and-kashmir">Jammu and Kashmir</keyword> that held best of nature’s bounty had turned into a courtyard of death in a matter of few days. Even now, the flood waters endanger a lot of lives around, but the worst seems to be over, or so do the people hope. 
 
Monsoon in the snowy valley, which grows some of the priciest of the spices, flowers and thrives on tourism, has hardworking people too who have kept the lifelines going through their dedication. Even when the incessant rain in the last few days turned a big threat to their lives, they took out their small boats, shikaras and life-saving spirit to help stranded tourists and saved thousands, risking their own lives in the ordeal. 
 <keyword id="6354416" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Army">Indian Army</keyword> and allied forces have kept their rescue efforts on and rose phenomenally to the occasion. Over 1, 10, 000 people have been taken to safer places after flood waters inundated the valley. Now that the water level has been receding in Indian administered Kashmir, the part that has been occupied by <keyword id="3001" type="COUNTRY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Pakistan">Pakistan</keyword> is in for some worst times. Waters have now reached that part as well. The dyke has breached, and thousands are fleeing the area for safety. More than one million people are said to have been affected by floods in Pakistan. 
 
Death toll, as of now, has been put at 450 from both countries. Rescue choppers have found no time to rest yet and have continued with their efforts of finding survivors trapped in various parts of the flooded areas. 
 
Chaotic scenes have been witnessed at Srinagar, from where the flights have been taking locals and tourists to other parts of the country. Anger and resentment is raising its ugly head at the most challenging time when Natural Disaster Response Force has been relentlessly working and carrying people to relief camps set up in safe areas. 
 
Major boost has come from the fact that cellphone connectivity has been restored in majority of the areas, enabling people to connect with their families. However, having been stranded in isolated areas with five feet deep water, with barely any food and least of all, no battery to keep their cellphones working, people still continue to seek help through ways that are beyond the reach of technology. 
 
A sense of abandoned feeling has been gripping the valley with people pitching in to do their bit on rescuing front. Locals have begun to feel they neither belong to India nor to Pakistan while both countries stake claim on their land. Relief camps run by residents of various areas have been set up to help their co-inhabitants with food and water. 
 Though the government feels the response was as swift as it could get, the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir – <keyword id="19464" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Omar-Abdullah">Omar Abdullah</keyword> claimed helplessness with the nature unleashing its fury. 
 
“We had no government for the entire 36 hours since the entire establishment was wiped out,” he told media persons when asked about the state government’s unpreparedness to combat the worst times since terrorist attacks that marred the valley since long. 
 
In a way, Kashmir is most blessed and most cursed too. The terrorist attacks and instigating activities by separatist groups have stolen the peace of the valley since long. Now, with floods disrupting the life of Kashmiris, people feel the government wasn’t really up to face the situation. 
 
Now, with flood waters receding, people are hoping there is no sunshine since that would mean the glaciers melting. If that happens, they would be in for some worse times as waters would start flowing with great force again, wiping out life that has got a second chance to set its course right. 
 
The floods that have shaken the very spirit of an otherwise peace-loving valley are said to be the worst in last half a century. People are only hoping the worst is behind them by now.
