Monday, November 11: A rainy day in <keyword id="19895037" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="bengaluru" source="keywords">Bengaluru</keyword> is not something the city’s residents can take lightly. From severely waterlogged roads to toppling buildings, even a single bout of intense rains can set off the crumbling infrastructure of the Karnataka capital. And now, a days-long rainfall forecast is in the cards for the city. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), a low pressure area is expected to form in the Bay of Bengal in the next 24 hours. Thereafter, it is likely to move slowly nearly westwards towards Tamil Nadu/Sri Lanka coasts during subsequent 2-days. While the system will dump most rains over Tamil Nadu, the regions nearing the southern state won’t go unscathed. Heavy rains (64.5 mm-115.5 mm) are expected to lash South Interior Karnataka on Wednesday and Thursday (November 13-14). A yellow watch, urging civilians to “be updated” about the inclement weather, has been placed over the region for those two days. Due to the ongoing metro work in the northern parts of the city, in particular, severe traffic congestion and waterlogging are possible. Locals would do well to avoid areas prone to flooding and follow weather forecasts closely to plan their days accordingly. Apart from Bengaluru, Uttara Kannada, Dakshina Kannada, Belgaum, Chikkaballapur and Udupi districts may also experience considerable rains this week. Meanwhile, after enjoying excess rains in October, the northeast monsoon’s poor performance so far this month has left Karnataka a little parched. Between November 1 and 10, the state has collectively recorded just 11 mm of rainfall — 48% below normal. Bengaluru Urban and Rural have also recorded deficits of 78% and 76%, respectively. It remains to be seen if the upcoming rains will help the state make up for these shortfalls.

Rain gods to determine RCB’s fate in IPL 2024 as Bengaluru braces for wet weather this weekend

One is a Millennium City and other one is India’s startup hub. Gurugram and Bengaluru, two cities that house world’s best companies, have one major issue to deal with and it is not even funny. 
 
Incessant rains in both the cities has brought normal life to a grinding halt as Gurugram and Bengaluru are flooded, leaving residents high and dry and daily commuters stranded in traffic for nearly six hours. 
 
On Thursday evening, the situation in Gurugram turned worse when it rained cats and dogs in the Millennium City. The roads were flooded, people were stuck in bumper-to-bumper traffic for six hours. 
 
The heavy rains exposed the lax attitude of civic authorities who continued to play the blame-game over the nuisance. Haryana Chief Minister ML Khattar blamed Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. The Haryana Government says a large amount of water exits Gurugram through the Najafgarh drain, which flows through Delhi but is blocked partly, which inundates the city. 
 
Meanwhile, Traffic Police worked tirelessly to help move the choc-a-bloc and even advised commuters to stay off roads on Friday. Schools have also been ordered to remain shut. 
 
The situation in Bengaluru is also quite grim as authorities are using boats to rescue people stranded in the rain.

"To provide abundant water to 110 villages under the <keyword id="19916981" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="BBMP" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="BBMP" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="BBMP">BBMP</keyword>, Cauvery Phase 5 drinking water project is being launched today at Torekadanahalli in Malavalli taluk, I appeal to all the people of the country to come in large numbers to witness these extraordinary moments," he further said. The Cauvery Phase 5 Water Supply Project is among the largest of its kind in India, designed to supply water to approximately 5 million people in Bengaluru. This monumental project includes the construction of India's largest <keyword id="19927085" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="water-treatment-plant" source="keywords">water treatment plant</keyword>, with a capacity of 775 MLD. The project is further supported by a cutting-edge flood control system to ensure uninterrupted operations. Three advanced booster pumping stations have been constructed at TK Halli, Harohalli, and Tataguni, allowing water to be pumped to an elevation of 450 meters - roughly the height of a 50-story building through steel pipes ranging from 500mm to 2200mm in diameter. These pipes cover a distance of approximately 110 kilometers to deliver water to Bengaluru. The project required the use of 145,000 metric tonnes of steel and 2.4 crore man-hours to complete, making it a feat of modern engineering. The water conveyed through the Cauvery Phase 5 project will be distributed across Bengaluru's suburbs via a steel trunk main pipeline, reaching reservoirs in Gottigere, Doddakanahalli, Lingadhiranahalli, SMV 6th Block, Kadugodi, and Chokkanahalli. From these reservoirs, water will flow to areas in Yeshwantpur, Bengaluru South, Batarayanpur, T. Dasarahalli, Mahadevpura, Rajarajeshwarinagar, and Bommanahalli, ensuring water reaches every household in the identified areas. Meanwhile, the Deputy Chief Minister lashed out at the Opposition parties for shaming Bengaluru for the waterlogging due to rain fury. "It is not possible to control nature. The government is doing the best it can to manage rain havoc. The Opposition parties must stop tarnishing the image of Bengaluru. I will hold another round of meeting with the officials of BBMP, Police department and Fire department to take stock of the situation, once I return from the inauguration of Cauvery 5th stage project" he said. On the question of posts from Opposition leaders on Bengaluru rains, he said, "Can we tell nature to stop the rains. These are unexpected rains due to cyclones. The government and the people of Bengaluru are capable of handling it."
