 <keyword id="6354321" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Bengaluru">Bengaluru</keyword> made it to the final by virtue of superior aggregate goal difference of 4-2. The first leg in Malaysia ended in a 1-1 draw. 
 
This is a historic day for Indian football as no club from the country has ever made it to the summit clash of the prestigious second-tier continental tournament. 
 
After the Malaysian team went ahead with Shafiq Rahim's 11th minute goal, Chhetri struck the equaliser in the 41st minute and put the side ahead in the 67th minute. Bengaluru's win was sealed when Spanish defender Juan Antonio Gonzalez Fernandez found the back of the net in the 75th minute. 
 
In front of a packed stadium, the hosts, who trailed 0-1 till the 41st minute, saw their skipper rising to the occasion as he nodded home a Eugenson Lyngdoh flag kick. Chhetri evaded the defence and timed his jump to perfection to bring the 'Blues' back in the match. 
 The significance of this achievement could be gauged by the fact that only two Indian football clubs - <keyword id="57671" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Dempo-Sports-Club">Dempo Sports Club</keyword> of Goa and Kolkata giants East Bengal - had made it to the semi-finals of the tournament since its inception.

What started off as an ALS awareness drive in America is probably on the verge of becoming a worldwide phenomenon. 
 
Indian Tennis player Rohan Bopanna was the one who started this challenge in India after being nominated by former tennis player Amrit Narsimhan. After taking up the challenge, he nominated actor Rahul Bose, sports editor Digvijay Singh Deo and the entire team of Bengaluru Football club. 
 

 
While Rahul Bose decided to donate to the charity, Bengaluru FC did a group challenge and, in turn, nominated Badminton star Ashwini Ponappa, Tennis sensation Sania Mirza and the blue-eyed boy of Indian cricket Yuvraj Singh. 
 
 
 
Sania Mirza took the challenge twice, having not enough water in the bucket in the first go, and challenged fellow Tennis players Cara Black and Mahesh Bhupathi, Yuvraj Singh, her sister Anam Mirza and actor Riteish Deshmukh, thus, taking the challenge from Indian sports to Bollywood. 
 
 
 
Ashwini Ponappa completed the challenge as well and nominated fellow baddie player Jwala Gutta, swimmer Rehan Poncha and her friend and fashion designer Shravya Verma. 
 
 
 
Mahesh Bhupathi took the challenge and nominated his coach Scott Davidoff, shooter Abhinav Bindra, Abhishek Bachchan and all the members of the Kabaddi team Jaipur Pink Panthers. 
 
 
 
Riteish Deshmukh, who is in Poland shooting for his film Bangistan, produced by Excel Entertainment, went ahead to take the challenge via his <a href="https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=854831017863533&amp;set=vb.149681275045181&amp;type=2&amp;theater">Facebook account</a> and nominated his ‘good friends’ actors Akshay Kumar, Abhishek Bachchan, Pulkit Samrat, Siddharth Malhotra and Ashish Chowdhry. 
 
All of the above actors as well as Abhinav Bindra, Jaipur Pink Panthers, Jwala Gutta, Scott Davidoff, Rehan Poncha,and Yuvraj Singh are yet to take the challenge.

ALS Ice Bucket Challenge Comes To India

New Delhi, Mar 11 () Indian football team captain and star striker <keyword id="99507" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sunil-Chhetri">Sunil Chhetri</keyword> on Thursday said he has tested positive for COVID-19, a development that is set to rule him out of the international friendly against Oman on March 25 in Dubai. He is also likely to miss the March 29 friendly against United Arab Emirates at the same venue. The Bengaluru FC star forward took to social media to post the update and said that he is feeling fine. "In a not-so-happy update, I've tested positive for COVID-19. In better news, I feel fine as I continue my recovery from the virus and should be back on a football pitch soon," <keyword id="268788" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Chhetri">Chhetri</keyword> wrote on his Twitter handle. "No better time to keep reminding everyone to continue taking all the safety precautions always." The 36-year-old was competing in the <keyword id="1910227" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Super-League">Indian Super League</keyword> (ISL) till last month in Goa in a bio-secure bubble. His campaign got over after Bengaluru FC failed to make the semifinals. The team's last game was on February 25, which Chhetri played and also scored a goal. Bengaluru FC were placed seventh on the table at the end of the league stage. The former champions logged 22 points after winning five matches, drawing seven and losing eight games. Chhetri, the second highest goal scorer in international football among active players, scored eight times in the 20 ISL games this season. As part of the preparation for the two matches against Oman and UAE, the national team is scheduled to assemble for a preparatory camp in Dubai from March 15. India last played an international match in November 2019, in the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Afghanistan (in Tajikistan) and Oman (in Muscat). Already out of contention for the second round of World Cup qualifiers, India are scheduled to play two home matches against Asian Champions Qatar and Afghanistan, and an away game against Bangladesh. Indian football team captain Sunil Chhetri tests positive for COVID 19

Mumbai, Jul 4 () The Reliance Foundation Young Champs (RFYC) academy has been conferred two-star academy status by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC). The recognition was confirmed by AFC general secretary Dato' Windsor John in a communication to the All India Football Federation (AIFF) on Friday. RFYC became the first youth academy in India to be granted a five-star rating by the AIFF Academy Accreditation process in June, 2019. The other academy that got the two-star rating is Bengaluru FC's Youth Development programme. Assessments are made on the basis of the academy's ability to provide leadership, planning, organisation, staffing, recruitment, finance, facilities, coaching, player health, coaching and fitness among other requirements. "To be granted Two-Star Academy status is indeed a proud moment for all of us at RFYC," said Nita Ambani, Reliance Foundation chairperson. "Our goal is to unlock the huge potential of Indian football. I firmly believe in order to accomplish that, we need to create a world class eco-system that helps funnel the talent pool that exists across the country. "This recognition by AFC will only strengthen our resolve to continue to strive towards excellence and ensure RFYC plays its part in putting Indian football on the global map. I thank AFC and AIFF for the honour." Since the inception of its journey in May 2015, RFYC has made rapid strides towards achieving its vision of creating not only the nation's next generation of football stars but also future role models and leaders. Over the last five years, RFYC has emerged as not only the most well-equipped residential academy in the country but also as a nursery for budding talents scouted from across India. The rapid strides made were visible at the PL-ISL Next Generation Mumbai Cup earlier this year when the RFYC U-15 side defeated Manchester United U-14 1-0 to clinch third place, after having beaten Southampton U-14 3-0 earlier in the tournament. Reliance Foundation Young Champs conferred two-star academy status by AFC

Some of the big companies in India are keen on buying a team in the Indian Premier League (<keyword id="6354312" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="IPL">IPL</keyword>) after the <keyword id="6354977" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Supreme-Court">Supreme Court</keyword> banned Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and <keyword id="13802" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Rajasthan-Royals">Rajasthan Royals</keyword> (RR) on Tuesday from participating in the game. 

	This move provides room for the induction of two more teams in the next edition of IPL, reported ToI.
 

	The IPL is the richest of the world's Twenty20 cricket leagues.
 The expected list of names are: Gautam Adani, <keyword id="2742230" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Adani-Group-chairman">Adani group chairman</keyword>, <keyword id="52673" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="harsh-goenka">Harsh Goenka</keyword>, RPG group chairman, Sajjan Jindal, chairman JSW, <keyword id="7025" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Venugopal-Dhoot">Venugopal Dhoot</keyword>, Videocon group chairman, besides others such as Prasad Potluri of South-based PVP Ventures and the Munjals of Hero group. Confirming the development Harsh Goenka told ToI, that honour was restored to the gentleman's game with corruption getting clean bowled by the apex court’s verdict. "The league remains an interesting investment opportunity. If <keyword id="6354756" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="BCCI">BCCI</keyword> auctions a franchise, I will consider it only if the valuations are considerable." 

	Moreover, the valuations of the IPL teams have come down considerably due to a series of corruption. According to experts, the new teams are likely to be bought for less than $100 million.
 Venugopal Dhoot, one of the key sponsors of Mukesh Ambani-owned <keyword id="13880" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Mumbai-Indians">Mumbai Indians</keyword>, is also keen on buying a team. "We will definitely look at bidding for an IPL franchise as and when BCCI calls for bid. We spend crores in branding exercise and owning an IPL team would be a great idea," he said. 

	The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) might want to revive the Pune and Kochi teams. However, launching a new team for Ahmedabad may not be ruled out, according to sources. 
 

	In that case Gautam Adani may be a key contender to buy the Ahmedabad team as the billionaire businessman had once dreamt of owning an IPL team for his home state. 
 "The idea of having an Ahmedabad team would be great as it would draw lots of interest from corporates for being the home state of Prime Minister <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword>," said an industry leader. 

	Sajjan Jindal is another top contender to own an IPL team. "Cricket is the number one sport in our country so there is an idea to acquire a team... an IPL team. But, I cannot comment which team would it be," Jindal, JSW group chairman said earlier this month.
 He did not confirm or deny if he wanted to buy <keyword id="12643" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Royal-Challengers">Royal Challengers</keyword> Bangalore (RCB), owned by liquor baron <keyword id="14678" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Vijay-Mallya">Vijay Mallya</keyword>. 

	JSW Sports, a JSW Group owned firm, is the owner of Bengaluru FC, one of the I-league teams led by Indian football team's captain Sunil Chhetri.
 Potluri Vara Prasad might again try his luck this time after he failed to buy <keyword id="1336250" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Deccan-Charger">Deccan Charger</keyword> in 2012, industry sources said.

Somebody's loss is somebody's gain! India Inc biggies eye IPL team after ban on CSK, RR

India football captain <keyword id="99507" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Sunil-Chhetri">Sunil Chhetri</keyword> has become the biggest earner at the first-ever <keyword id="1910227" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Indian-Super-League">Indian Super League</keyword> (ISL) auction in Mumbai on Friday, going to <keyword id="34339" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="mumbai-city">Mumbai City</keyword> FC for Rs 1.20 crore. Eugeneson Lyngdoh and Rino Anto fetched amounts far above their base prices. 

	Chhetri, 31, was bought at Rs 40 lakh above his base price of Rs 80 lakh. The India skipper would play alongside former French international Nicholas Anelka up front, reported PTI. 
 Central midfielder Lyngdoh, among the star performers in last season's I-League for Bengaluru FC, went to <keyword id="34055" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="pune-city">Pune City</keyword> FC for Rs 1.5 crore. The amount was more than three times his base price of Rs 27.5 lakh after six teams were involved in an intense bidding war to get his services. 

	The first two were sold in the first part of the two-stage auction process while defender Anto was successfully bid and bought for Rs 90 lakh by last year's tournament winners Atletico de Kolkata, which was more than five times his base price of Rs 17.5 lakh. 
 

	Meanwhile, Anto had the lowest base prize in the 10-player auction. 
 Midfielder <keyword id="1069688" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Thoi-Singh">Thoi Singh</keyword> also fetched a much higher price, more than twice his base price of Rs 39 lakh. He took part as a free agent, who was sold to Chennayin FC for 86 lakh after an aggressive fight with North East United and Mumbai City. Winger <keyword id="636477" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Jackichand-Singh">Jackichand Singh</keyword>, of I-League team Royal Wahingdoh, was the first player to be bid for in the auction that saw a hot race featuring four teams and was finally won by Pune City FC with a clinching bid of Rs 45 lakh -- more than twice his base price of Rs 20 lakh. Central medio <keyword id="150589" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Arata-Izumi">Arata Izumi</keyword> (base price Rs 40 lakh) was clinched by ATK for Rs 68 lakh, striker Robin Singh (base price Rs 40 lakh) went to Delhi Dynamos for Rs 51 lakh while winger <keyword id="2728244" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Seityasen-Singh">Seityasen Singh</keyword> (base price Rs 20 lakh) was successfully bid for by North East United for Rs 56 lakh. Defender <keyword id="244211" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Anas-Edathodika">Anas Edathodika</keyword> was bought for Rs 41 lakh, just one lakh above his base price, by Delhi Dynamos in a lukewarm bidding, while Chennayin FC were the lone bidders to buy the services of goalkeeper Karanjeet Singh at his base prize of Rs 60 lakh.
