Sensex shoots up 419 points, Nifty over 17k level

Adani Enterprises will be setting up a hyper-scale data centre at <keyword id="7009895" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bengal-Silicon-Valley" source="Orion">Bengal Silicon Valley</keyword> in the New Town area in the northern outskirts of Kolkata, according to the West Bengal Commerce and Industries Minister Partha Chatterjee. "We have already allotted 51.75 acres of land for that purpose at Bengal Silicon Valley. The land is being allotted on the basis of a 99-year lease," he told media persons at the Assembly premises here on Monday. However, Chatterjee declined to comment on the quantum of investment that Adani Enterprises will be making behind that project. He was also silent on the number of direct employment that the proposed project will ensure. While addressing the Bengal Global Business Summit (BGBS)-2022, the annual event organised by the state government to showcase the state as an attractive business destination, in April, <keyword id="6367820" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="adani-group" source="Orion">Adani Group</keyword> Chairman <keyword id="111343" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="gautam-adani" source="Orion">Gautam Adani</keyword> said that his group will invest Rs 10,000 crore in the state over the next ten years. Then he also said that this proposed investment will be in sectors like date centres, warehouses and under-sea cables. "This will provide direct and indirect employment to around 25,000 people. As we make these investments, we will bring in the state world class technology," he had said. According to Chatterjee, this hyper-scale data centre will be the first tranche of the investment of Rs 10,000 crore by Adani Group in the state. He also said that proposals for setting up four bicycle manufacturing units by four different companies at Kharagpur Vidyasagar Industrial Park in West Midnapore district have also been received by the state government. According to him, the four projects combined will entail investment to the tune of Rs 40 crore and will ensure employment to 140 individuals. But if you are a greenhorn out of college and trying to walk in with an idea, you can walk out again. Incubators across the country could be the only hope for you, but the competition is very, very stiff there – as stiff as landing a decent job. 
 
Want to start up? Give us your pound of flesh. This input comes straight from an IIT passout who tried to set up his first solar power project in South Bengal. Even after a year, the venture is stranded mid-way, permissions are pending and <keyword id="85355" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="red-tape">red tape</keyword> rules supreme. It’s still not certain how much persuasion, influence or other incentives will be required to get out of the logjam but in the meantime, the bootstrapped firm is fast running out of cash. If that is the price of starting up here, it is no wonder that potential entrepreneurs give it a wide berth. 
 
What <keyword id="94495" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="100" keywordseo="Innovation">innovation</keyword>? Have you applied for a patent? That’s a real problem, to be sure. Very few <keyword id="770060" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Indian-start-ups">Indian start-ups</keyword> have the <keyword id="1949348" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="RD-fund">R&amp;D fund</keyword> or the inclination to step into uncharted territories. And a recent chat with a <keyword id="6404679" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="start-up">start-up</keyword> focused venture capitalist further validated the point. According to him, most tech start-ups try and focus on the service side of things or at the most, customise tech platforms to meet their requirements. As for creating something as huge as Apple, Google or <keyword id="6354576" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Facebook">Facebook</keyword>, we simply lack the bandwidth. Are the start-ups in non-IT or non-Internet space (for instance, pharma) doing any better? Not really, as very few private organisations are ready to back up risky bets. 
 
If innovations are out, let’s do what we do best – copycating. Majority of the Indian start-ups do just that to survive. Most of the concepts and business models introduced in the US are closely followed here and seem to be making good money. Both <keyword id="18635" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Amazon">Amazon</keyword> and <keyword id="384914" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Groupon">Groupon</keyword> have their India competitions (we prefer not to name any name as this piece is done in jest) for a long time, which shows we are quick to follow good ideas but not quick enough to churn out something ahead of others. 
 
‘No-transparency’ is in, but that does hurt business. We are not taking sides here, but most will remember the ugly showdown between Lilliput Kidswear and its PE investors – Bain Capital and TPG Capital. The PE firms took the company to court over alleged accounting fraud. The same thing seems to be happening to home-grown kids’ wear retailer Catmoss as PE investor SAIF Partners alleged that the company was selling its assets, doctoring its books and fudging meeting minutes. Then there is the painful case of Timtara.com, the controversial e-commerce portal who allegedly failed to deliver and shut shop when its promoters were arrested. If integrity is the first <keyword id="6379994" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="80" keywordseo="casualty">casualty</keyword>, nothing can buy a business a fresh lease of life. 
 
Snif… Snif… I don’t want to be your co-founder. 
Nothing can cure that holier-than-thou attitude that ails most start-up founders. And the result is a painful walkout by key people – right from co-founders to senior executives. Oh yes, most of them are sweet about it, saying they need to start all over again and would love to get a kick out of their new assignments. But then, people like Bal Krishn Birla, co-founder of the online hypermarket ZopNow.com, complain openly about being wrongly ousted from their own companies. That kind of conflict might remind you of Steve Jobs but it’s hardly an ideal situation for an early-stage business to thrive upon.

That’s the exit line for most of the start-ups and investors are only too happy to go with the flow. Well, that’s not exactly what Snapchat is doing right now (it has refused a $3 billion offer from the mighty Facebook) or what WhatsApp did a year ago. But then, ventures at home are always in a hurry to get over with it if they can and walk away with a tidy sum. Of course, that is sound business sense but it hardly helps growth at a global level. Patience pays at times and <keyword id="6354616" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Twitter">Twitter</keyword>, once a no-revenue company, has proved it by going for a really huge IPO. As Manipur goes to polls again, the Returning Officer (RO)The Returning Officer (RO) of the Outer Manipur Parliamentary Constituency, Haobam Rosita, has <a href="https://www.newsclick.in/returning-officer-recommends-re-poll-19-polling-stations-manipur">recommended</a> that re-polling needs to take place at 19 of the polling stations from the first phase of the general elections in the state. Among the many reasons that Rosita cites for repolling, the most disturbing is probably one of the constituencies showed that voter turnout in excess of 100% and that the polling booth for the Najang Village was put up at a non-designated location. In order to keep disruptive elements from affecting the polls similarly, the west Indian states of West Bengal and Assam are <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/patna/2nd-phase-tight-security-in-five-election-bound-districts/articleshow/68868180.cms">increasing</a> security in constituencies along the border — especially in districts classified as ‘vulnerable’ and ‘critical’. And unfortunately, for Jammu and Kashmir, none of the contesting political parties are talking about the environmental issues which have a heavy bearing on the state’s water supply as well as its tourism industry, which has been suffering as more and more of the state’s green capital is being destroyed. The third phase of the general election will kick off on April 23 covering 14 states — Assam, Goa, Karnataka, Odisha, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Bihar, Gujarat, Kerala, Uttar Pradesh, Daman and Diu, Chhattisgarh, Jammu and Kashmir, Maharashtra and West Bengal. Here’s what the second phase of the Indian general election has in store for the 11 states polling today

<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image">Redis LabsOfer Bengal, co-founder and CEO of Redis Labs</div></div></div><ul class="summary-list"><li>On Thursday, database startup <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/redis-labs-funding-amazon-2019-2">Redis Labs</a> announced a new license for its software, called the <a href="https://redislabs.com/community/licenses/">Redis Source Available License.</a></li><li> Last year, Redis Labs took a stand against <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-web-services-firecracker-open-source-2018-11">Amazon Web Services </a>and other cloud giants with a new software license that put restrictions on how its open source code can be used. That license was confusing for users, Redis Labs CEO Ofer Bengal now says. </li><li>The new license is more clear about how the code can and can't be used - but it also means that any of Redis Labs' software covered by this license will no longer be considered open source. </li><li>Redis Labs sees this as a worthy trade-off, and a necessary move to protect its business from Amazon.</li></ul>Last year, Redis Labs - the proprietors of the popular Redis database - took a stand against cloud providers like Amazon by changing the terms of its open source software license. The upshot: Years after Amazon Web Services took the open source Redis database and started offering it as a paid service to its own customers, Redis Labs put a provision in its licensing that lets anybody do anything with the code, except sell it as a paid service. The move proved controversial: Some said the license <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-web-services-open-source-licensing-undermine-2018-12">went against</a> the meaning of open source, while others <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-investors-throwing-money-at-open-source-startups-2019-2">supported it</a> as a way to protect Redis Labs' business. Importantly, the change doesn't affect the main Redis database itself, but rather the additional add-ons for it developed by Redis Labs.Now, though, Redis Labs CEO Ofer Bengal tells Business Insider that the move confused some users, so it's making another change aimed at simplifying matters by introducing the <a href="https://redislabs.com/community/licenses/">Redis Source Available License</a>. It's a move that's necessary for Redis Labs to take on the major cloud providers, Bengal says, whatever the philosophical implications - and, in fact, it means that those Redis add-ons will go from being "open source" software to "source available," a subtle but important distinction."People realized that something must be changed because the situation with open source cannot go on like this," Bengal told Business Insider. "Otherwise, no one will develop significant open source projects. It doesn't make sense when cloud providers take it from them."<h2>The new changes</h2>Last year, Redis Labs appended the <a href="https://commonsclause.com/">Commons Clause</a> to the Apache 2.0 software license for the add-ons, or extensions, to the Redis database. Like most other open source software licenses, the Apache 2.0 allows for anybody to legally download the code for free and do whatever they want with it - even package it up and sell it, as Amazon has done to Redis with its own AWS Elasticache service.But by adding Commons Clause, it effectively blocked Amazon and other cloud providers from selling its Redis add-ons for a profit. Otherwise, the main Redis database remains open source. Soon after, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/fedora-a-red-hat-sponsored-project-rejects-mongodb-because-of-sspl-2019-1">MongoDB</a> and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/confluent-community-license-created-after-amazon-web-services-starts-selling-kafka-2018-12">Confluent</a> created new licenses of their own, with similar goals. Since Redis Labs added the Commons Clause, it has collected feedback from its users about the licensing change, and Bengal says that there are three main points of confusion for users. The first was, users found it confusing that Redis Labs was using the Commons Clause, which places limits on open source, in conjunction with the otherwise very permissive Apache 2.0 license. The second was that Commons Clause says that users can't sell it as a product or service "whose value derives, entirely or substantially, from the functionality of the Software." "Substantially" wasn't defined specifically enough for users, making it difficult to know if they were in compliance.The third was that users were confused about in what ways they can and can't sell Redis Labs' software. For example, some users said they wanted to offer consultancy and support services around Redis Labs' software, but were not sure if they were allowed to.With the feedback in hand, Redis Labs decided to scrap it all and create a completely new license that was more specific. Meet the <a href="https://redislabs.com/community/licenses/">Redis Source Available License</a>.<h2>The big change</h2>Importantly, Bengal points out again that the <a href="https://redislabs.com/community/licenses/">Redis Source Available License</a> doesn't affect the main Redis database, which will remain open source as before. It's only those add-ons that are affected. "Our case was a little more complex than others," Bengal said. "We wanted to keep the core of Redis open source and apply this new license only to extensions. Each company has its own needs and nuances when it comes to carving a new software license. We did what's best for us."According to this license, anyone can use the source code, modify it, and integrate it into their applications, and they don't need to contribute the code back if they don't want to. The one restriction is that users cannot distribute or sell their application as a database or caching system.For example, if a company has a website that uses Redis Labs' database components in the back end, it can use the database and make money from its website without any limitations. Likewise, users can sell support and consultancy services around Redis Labs' software. However, if a company sells a database based on Redis Labs' product, that is not allowed."If you read it, you can do everything with the new software except selling it as a database product," Bengal said. "If you're using it and otherwise selling it in software that's not a database, you can do whatever you want, no restrictions. We think this is very clear compared to what we had before."<h2>'We don't want to fight'</h2>Elsewhere in the market, MongoDB has said that it considers its new Server Side Public License (SSPL) to be open source, despite provisions that place limitations on how the code can be used.To that end, the MongoDB SSPL is currently under review by the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/open-source-initiative-open-letter-definition-2019-2">Open Source Initiative (OSI)</a>, which gives the stamp of approval on whether licenses are officially considered open source or not. It's an important distinction, as having the official open source designation serves as something of a guarantee to would-be buyers of the software that it doesn't have complicated or otherwise odious licensing terms. Bengal says that it's perfectly happy to have its Redis extensions defined as "source available" - meaning that while users can see the source code to its software, it doesn't meet the criteria. "According to the definition of the OSI, anything which has any limitations on anything is not open source by definition," Bengal said. "We think, by the way, that this is wrong, but for us, open source is not a religion. It's a practical thing. We have a business to run, so we don't want to fight the OSI, so basically this new license is not open source, although it has most of the ingredients of open source."Bengal expects some people to condemn Redis Labs' new approach, while others will react positively. Redis Labs could have completely closed off its code to the public with a commercial license, Bengal says, but it did not want to take this approach."No one would have said anything if we put all this software under a commercial license, not this type of new license, but we wanted to be more fair to the community and let them have the source code, play with it, and let them use it in their projects," Bengal said. "Whatever you do in this world, some people are for it, some people are against it.
