<keyword id="6386086" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Indian-Institutes-of-Technology">Indian Institutes of Technology</keyword> (<keyword id="49737" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="IITs">IITs</keyword>), the elite colleges in India, have lost places in this year’s <keyword id="3627377" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="QS-World-University-Rankings-2016-17">QS World University Rankings 2016-17</keyword> which were issued today, while Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has retained its top position for the fifth consecutive year. 
 
The best-ranked institution from India remained Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, even as it lost ranks and dropped out of the top 150. 
 
As the only good news, IIT Madras managed to break into the top 250, five ranks up from last year. 
 
Talking of world's top 100 institutions in research impact, only four Indian institutions feature in the list, as compared to last year's five, since the ranking of IIT Madras has dropped to 101. In this field, India’s best institute is IISc, ranked 11th. 
 "The performance of Indian institutions in our recent regional rankings suggests that India is gaining some ground on its regional competitors. Though India is making substantial and commendable progress towards ensuring that more of its tertiary-age population have access to tertiary education, the global edition indicates that substantial challenges remain," said <keyword id="1667476" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Ben-Sowter">Ben Sowter</keyword>, head of research at QS Intelligence Unit.

IITs lose places in world rankings, MIT still on top

<ul><li>Nearly 20 Indian universities were ranked in the top 200 in the <keyword id="421975" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="QS-World-University-Rankings">QS World University Rankings</keyword>: Asia 2020 this year.</li><li>IITs aside, 11 Indian universities were ranked in the top 200 including University of Delhi, University of Mumbai and <keyword id="6364790" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="anna-university">Anna University</keyword>. </li><li>However, even the elite IITs — Bombay, Delhi and Madras campuses — did not make it to the top 30. </li></ul>Nearly 20 universities were ranked in the top 200 in the <a href="https://www.qs.com/rankings-revealed-qs-wur-asia-2020/">QS World University Rankings: Asia 2020</a> this year. But even the elite IITs — Bombay, Delhi and Madras campuses — did not make it to the top 30. IIT Bombay — which the top ranking Indian institutions — ranks 21 in terms of employer reputation and 32 for academic reputation as per the list. Overall, 96 universities featured in the QS rankings — including 20 new entrants. However, India’s top 10 universities dropped in the Asia rankings compared to last year. The research also says that Indian education infrastructure is expanding but demand is expanding faster. “The number of universities has nearly doubled, and the number of colleges has grown by 50%. Nevertheless, the domestic demand for tertiary education of its young population — which is estimated to become the world’s largest by 2030 — is growing more rapidly than the expanded provision,” Ben Sowter, director of research at QS <a href="https://indianexpress.com/article/explained/qs-rankings-8-india-universities-in-asia-top-100-iit-bombay-34th-6140356/">said</a>. The QS rankings assess universities on 11 parameters including academic reputation, employer reputation, citations per paper and paper per faculty and others. IITs aside, 11 Indian universities ranked in the top 200 including University of Delhi, University of Hyderabad and <keyword id="6379311" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Jamia-Millia-Islamia">Jamia Millia Islamia</keyword>.

None of the India’s top IITs feature in the list of top 30 Asian universities

But IIT Indore has turned out to be the only institution that has shown a positive trend. The institute crawled up by 53 places — from ranking 241 in 2019 to 188 in 2020. The QS rankings assess universities on 11 parameters including academic reputation, employer reputation, citations per paper and paper per faculty and others. Located in Madhya Pradesh, IIT Indore is one of the eight new IITs established by the Indian government. It came into existence a decade ago under the mentorship of IIT Bombay. In 2016, it started functioning at its own campus. Among the BRICS nations, the institute ranks 97 and is known for its high research output among the Asian universities. It scored 94 points for papers per faculty metric and 64 points for citations per paper. The rankings for other IITs in the top 200 — Bombay, Delhi, Madras, Kharagpur, Kanpur, Roorkee and Guwahati campuses — dropped as compared to last year. The elite IITs did not make it to the top 30. IIT Bombay, which is the top ranking Indian institution slipped by one spot to at 34 compared to its 2019 ranking. It ranks 21 in terms of employer reputation and 32 for academic reputation as per the list. On the other hand, IIT Delhi, which was ranked at 40th position last year dropped by three spots to 43. “The number of universities has nearly doubled, and the number of colleges has grown by 50%. India’s IIT Indore crawls up by 53 places in the top 200 Asian universities while 8 other IITs drop

Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore was ranked second in the University Rankings, globally for its research facilities. This makes IISc the first Indian institution to get nearly 100,000 citations in research papers in a span of five years. Last year, the institute was ranked sixth among the top performing Indian universities. “The Indian Higher Education system is making progress in some key areas. The sector requires more substantial, sustained and strategic investments both in research and education,” Ben Sowter, QS Research Director said. Four of the 23 prominent Indian institutions ranked, improved on the performance in the higher education sector. But seven IITs reported a drop in rank. India’s premier institution Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Bombay moved up by ten spots to the 152th rank, according to <keyword id="2893769" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="QS-University-Rankings">QS University Rankings</keyword> 2020. IISc is now the world's second best research institute: QS University Rankings

Thirty eight of the <keyword id="6354868" type="COUNTRY" weightage="60" keywordseo="UK">UK</keyword>'s 48 universities in top 400 have dropped down the rankings this year, with Cambridge falling out of the top three.Political uncertainty over immigration reform and problems with long-term funding, could have affected the UK universities' performance, said Ben Sowter, head of research at QS, <a href="http://www.telegraph.co.uk/education/2016/09/05/top-100-world-universities-201617--qs-world-university-rankings/">according to a report in The Telegraph.</a>Most of the top 30 are in the US, but here's the definitive ranking:

And finally, overcoming all the hurdles including getting lost in the crowd of mediocrity, Indian Institute of Science(IISC), Bengaluru and Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi have secured a position among the 200 top universities of the world. The premiere Indian educational institutes have managed to bag top positions in QS World University Rankings 2015. 
 
While IISC has been ranked 147th, IIT Delhi has secured the 179th position, far ahead from last year’s 235th. 
 
According to the QS World University Rankings 2015, there are 14 Indian institutions in the World University Rankings and half of them are among the global 400. No other Indian universities have managed any ranks there. 
 
The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) is the world's top university, closely followed by Harvard. The University of Cambridge is tied to Stanford University for the third place. London is the only city in the world with four universities in the top 50, more than Boston and New York (3) Paris, Sydney, Hong Kong and Beijing (2), with the London School of Economics and Political Science making the top 40 for the first time. 
 
In an exclusive interview to The Times of India, Ben Sowter, QS head of research, said, "India has two institutions in the top 200 this year, which has occurred as a result of QS evolving its methodology to be more even-handed across subject areas and it has revealed strength in research in engineering, technology and the natural sciences. If you want to compare India and China, the primary shortfalls are money and consistent policy leadership." 
 
Thirty-four countries are represented in the top 200. 
 
The US is the dominant nation, with 49 institutions, ahead of the UK (30), the Netherlands (12), Germany (11), Canada, Australia, and Japan (8), China (7), France, Sweden and Hong Kong (5). 
 
“ What India should probably focus on, is having its universities focus on fostering global citizens with leadership potential, whilst maintaining its strengths in research in engineering, technology and natural sciences. In pursuing these objectives, institutions might conclude that a more diverse international mix on campus is not just a benefit for the visitors, but also for the natives, who will learn important skills and understanding, from working alongside their international peers,” Sowter added.
