"According to the initial assessment, the state has suffered a loss of Rs 4,000 crore. A proper survey will be carried out later," said Home Minister Basavaraj S. Bommai. Bommai and Revenue Minister R. Ashok made this appeal in a video conference with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. As Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa was undergoing treatment for Covid, his cabinet colleagues chipped in for him in Modi's flood review meeting. Additionally, the state has also asked for the second installment of Rs 395 crore to reinforce the State Disaster Response Fund to meet the immediate relief measures. Bommai and Ashok made these requests during the meeting conducted by Modi. The ministers told the Prime Minister that 885 villages spread over the seven districts of Raichur, Belagavi, Kodagu, Chikkamagalur, Shivamogga, Haveri and Hassan have been affected by the floods. Likewise, in an effort to handle emergencies more efficiently, Bommai said four more National Disaster Response Teams (NDRF) have been sought for the state. Karnataka is seeking ₹4,000 crore from the Central government to fund its flood relief measures

Mangaluru, Apr 21 () A 67-year-old woman, neighbour ofthe woman who died of COVID-19 at a village in DakshinaKannada district, has tested positive for coronavirus,officials said.The woman, from Kasba village in Bantwal, was admitted tothe Wenlock Hospital on Saturday with respiratory issues andher throat swab was sent for test. Results received on Tuesdayturned out positive, Deputy Commissioner Sindhu B Rupesh saidin a communique.The district administration had already sealed off Kasbavillage after the death of the 50-year-old woman Sunday.With this, the number of persons tested positive in thedistrict has gone up to 16.A total of 12 patients have recovered and beendischarged, while three are currently under treatment.Dakshina Kannada MP Nalin Kumar Kateel said 34 people inBantwal, including a doctor, have been quarantined. People warned against sharing info about coronavirus victims, patients on social media in K'taka

Mangaluru, Apr 29 () A 67-year old woman COVID-19patient was in a critical condition at a hospital here whileno fresh cases were reported in Dakshina Kannada and Udupidistricts in Karnataka on Wednesday.The woman from Bantwal, being treated at the WenlockHospital here, was on ventilator support in the intensive careunit and her condition stated to be critical, the DakshinaKannada district administration said in a release.In the district, a total of 2,841 samples have been sentfor tests so far, of which 2,426 tested negative and 21positive. Reports of 394 samples are awaited, it said.The district currently has seven active Covid-19patients, while two had succumbed to the disease.A total of 99 persons are quarantined at NIT-K facilityin Surathkal and the ESI hospital here.In Udupi district also, no fresh case was reportedWednesday.The district at present has no Covid-19 patient undertreatment. Elderly woman critical, no fresh COVID-19 cases in DK, Udupi districts in Karnataka

Mangaluru, Apr 24 () The funeral of a 75-year-oldwoman, who died of COVID-19, was held amid opposition fromlocal people in Dakshina Kannada district in Karnataka, policesaid on Friday.    The final rites of the woman from Kasba village were heldat the Hindu Rudrabhoomi at Kaikunje near Bantwal town, about30 kms from here, on Thursday night under strict policeprotection, even as local people who feared risk to theirhealth raised protests, they said.    The funeral was held as per the protocol for COVID-19deaths, police said.    The authorities had earlier decided to hold the cremationat Pachanady, but changed their plans after stiff oppositionfrom the local residents there.    Local MLA Bharath Y Shetty denined reports that he hadobjected to the cremation at Pachanady.    There will not be any danger to the local people ifCOVID-19 victims are cremated in their places, he said in apost on social media.    Such protests due to misconception about spread ofcoronavirus had been witnessed in some other parts of thecountry, including in Chennai, and the governments have warnedof action against those opposing cremation or burial ofCOVID-19 patients. Funeral of COVID-19 victim held amid protest in Karnataka

Mangaluru, May 9 () Three members of a family inDakshina Kannada district of Karnataka tested positive forcoronavirus on Saturday, taking the total number of casesreceiving treatment in the district to 15. The three identified are two women, aged 70 and 60, and a30-year-old man from Kasba village of Bantwal taluk They are relatives of a 69-year-old man of the samefamily who tested positive for the virus on May 1.The family is related to the 50-year-old woman who diedof the disease on April 19.Eight members of the family have been quarantined afterthe 69-year-old man tested positive.Three of them have now been confirmed with theinfection.The source of the infection has been traced to theFirst Neuro hospital at Padil.A total of 16 coronavirus cases reported in thedistrict has been linked with the hospital so far.An expert medical team has already been formed to findthe origin of the infection from the hospital.With three more persons testing positive, the number ofCOVID-19 cases registered in the district has risen to 31.Three persons died of the disease, while 13 haverecovered and been discharged.The district now has 15 cases under treatment. 3 of family test positive for COVID-19

Mangaluru, May 7 (): Karnataka Fisheries Minister andDakshina Kannada district-in-charge Kota Srinivas Poojary hasgiven instructions to the district deputy commissioner anddistrict health officer to trace the origin of COVID-19infection at the First Neuro hospital at Padil here andsubmit a report to the government.The Minister gave the direction at an emergency meetingof officials and health department authorities after threepositive cases were reported on Wednesday, all of them withlinks to people who have been treated at the hospital.    He sought an immediate report from the six-member team ofexperts formed for the purpose to clear the apprehensions inthe minds of the public.    The district health officer Ramachandra Bairy said theteam is collecting information from the patients about theircontacts at the hospital.    A number of tests are being done on patients and theircontacts who were treated at the hospital for other diseases.   Bairy said the team has got all details of the contacts ofpositive patients from the hospital and the investigation isprogressing well. A lot of samples have been collected andresults of many are awaited, he said.    Of the total 28 positive cases recorded in the districtso far, 12 from Bantwal, Narikombu and Boloor haveconnections with patients admitted at the First Neurohospital, which has been declared a containment zone sinceApril 23. Minister seeks report on origin of COVID-19 at hospital

(EDS: Updating with news of death)Mangaluru, Apr 23 (): A 75-year-old woman dieddue to coronavirus infection in Dakshina Kannada (DK)Thursday, taking the number of Covid-19 victims in thedistrict to two. The deceased woman was a close relative of thefirst victim from the district, a 50-year-old woman fromKasba village in Bantwal taluk, who died on April 19. The woman was admitted to a private hospital onApril 16 after suffering a stroke, from where she was shiftedto the intensive care unit of the Wenlock COVID-19 hospitalon Wednesday. Her throat swab samples sent for test turned outpositive earlier in the day and she succumbed to the diseasein the evening, an official medical bulletin said. Another primary contact of the first victim, a 67-year-old woman who is her immediate neighbour, is currentlyunder treatment here. A total of 1,615 samples have been sent for testsso far in the district, of which 1,222 have tested negativeand 17 positive. Twelve patients have been discharged after recovery. Of the reports received Thursday, 213 testednegative and one positive. Reports of 376 samples are awaited. In Udupi district, no positive cases were reported. Bengaluru, Apr 22 () Aimed at empowering people in itsfight against coronavirus, the Karnataka government onWednesday launched "Apthamitra" helpline with an exclusivetoll free number and a mobile app, aimed at providing requiredmedical advice and guidance for those in need. The help line and app was launched by Chief Minister B SYediyurappa in the presence of senior Ministers and officialsof the department."If anyone has symptoms of coronavirus, they can call thehelpline from their home, get medical advice or assistance andget their doubts cleared.Based on the symptoms, an expert team of doctors willadvice on what to do next," he said.According to the department, the 'Apthamitra' helplinewill work from 8 AM to 8 PM, with helpline Centers at sixlocations in Bengaluru (four centers), Mysore and Mangalore(Bantwal) with total of 300 seat capacity are being set up.It's a two tier system where the first tier is manned byAYUSH or nursing or pharma final year volunteer students.The second tier is manned by MBBS or Integrated Medicineor AYUSH volunteer doctors connecting from their respectivelocations for risk assessment, counselling, telemedicine andreferral for testing and treatment, it added. The helpline "14410" will cover residents in all parts ofthe state.While the 'Apthamitra' App is for those with smart phoneto seek advice for telemedicine from doctors directly.The purpose of this initiative is to reach out to people,especially those staying in Corona hotspot areas, identifythose having Influenza Like Illness (ILI), Severe AcuteRespiratory Infection (SERI), coronavirus like symptoms orhaving high risk of getting infected, the state healthdepartment said.It also intends to identify people with low risk, buthaving some symptoms similar to those of coronavirus andprovide them telemedicine support with OTC medicines, andcounsel them for self-quarantine.It also aims to follow-up all low risk cases till theyget fully cured, along with assessing those having medium tohigh risk of coronavirus and get them to fever clinics orCOVID-19 screening centers for testing and treatment, thedepartment said in a release.The intention of the platform is to analyse incidence ofIlI, inform decisions for graded relaxation of the lockdown toresume economic activities in areas with low prevalence of thesymptoms while stepping up containment measures in hotspots,clusters and disease break-out areas, it said.This entire Solution is owned by Health and FamilyWelfare Department and State Disaster Management Authority.The system works under the aegis of NASSCOM, Bengaluru.The Digital Mobile app and the back end CRM system havebeen developed by Infosys BPM (the subsidiary of Infosys Ltd),the release said.Further Infosys BPM and Hinduja Global Solutions haveworked together to design, build and execute the Multi-Channelcustomer contact Solution with the Contact Center Infra beingprovided by Infosys, HGS, Concentrix, MPhasis and HCL aspartners in the fight against coronavirus,it added. Business Insider searched through articles, both its own and those of other news organizations, talked to current and former employees, and sounded out recruiters to aggregate the partners who left. Since <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/goldman-sachs-david-solomon-ceo-2018-7">becoming CEO</a> in October 2018, David Solomon has turned a sharp eye to Goldman's trading division, where former CEO Lloyd Blankfein made his career and where many of his top lieutenants kept their desks. The securities division has struggled with a move toward electronic trading and calm financial markets that have kept many clients on the sidelines, and yet many of the exits were well-known names on Wall Street. Salame, David Casner, and Justin Gmelich, to name just three, quickly found jobs elsewhere. Salame, once head of the division, joined Ken Griffin's hedge fund, Citadel, as head of credit, while Casner, a senior exec in equity derivatives, joined Citadel last year as well. Gmelich, one of two leaders of Goldman's fixed-income franchise, joined hedge fund King Street Capital as global head of markets and also joined MarketAxess' board. Some partners didn't leave the firm, but gave up their standing as partners. John Madsen, the former chief technology officer, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/goldman-sachs-departures-robin-vince-latest-to-leave-2019-9">chose</a> to "retire from the partnership," according to a September memo that hewed closely to a phrase that's been used in other cases as well. Dean Backer, head of Goldman's prime brokerage unit, also retired from the partnership, but stayed on as chairman of the business. Others are still at the firm, but have made it known that they intend to leave. Josh Struzziery, for example, will leave by the end of this month, according to a person with knowledge of his exit. One current partner, research chief Steve Strongin, is widely thought to be giving up his management post and partnership status this year to focus on writing and research, though he remains a partner today, according to a person familiar with his thinking. Each individual decision was likely a mixture of realizing that there was no place for them in Solomon's Goldman Sachs and finding exciting opportunities elsewhere. When people leave, there's a number of ways to go. While many like to stay private, others host cocktail hours or private dinners with close colleagues, and sometimes, clients. Marty Chavez, for example, is hosting a retirement dinner on Wednesday night at the Izakaya-style Japanese restaurant Zuma. Colleagues arranged marching bands to fete Justin Gmelich and Brian Levine when they left, and Levine gave a short speech over the trading floor's loudspeaker known as the hoot, according to a person who witnessed it. Others are clapped off the floor. And still others star in movies: Paul Russo was the subject of a short video featuring old photos that aired in the auditorium. In all, roughly 50 partners have already left since the last partner class was <a href="https://www.goldmansachs.com/media-relations/press-releases/archived/2018/gs-partner-class-2018.html">announced</a> in November 2018, or said they will leave shortly, according to a person who has seen the numbers. Executives expect another 30 or so to leave between now and when the new partner class is announced later this year, the person said.Executives close to Solomon think the exits are tracking past cycles. By other counts, the firmwide departures have been greater than in years past. The Wall Street Journal <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/goldman-sachss-partnership-is-shrinking-11567635448">reported</a> in September, without saying where it got the information, that as much as 15% of the firm's roughly 500 partners would leave. The newspaper said at the time that as many as 12 partners were negotiating their exit before the end of the year.Goldman's partnership stood at roughly 500 in late 2018 when a new class of 69 partners - the smallest in Goldman's two decades as a public company - received the promotion.The CEO is looking to shrink the partnership and make it more exclusive, and he's made it clear internally that he wants to give more of the prestigious titles to revenue producers than those who work in human resources, finance, or operations. He's also said that some of the exits have come as a byproduct of choosing other executives for more senior roles. Jeff Nedelman, for example, is widely thought to have left after Solomon named Marc Nachmann as co-head of the securities division."As a management team, John, Stephen and I are very focused on creating opportunities for the next generation of leaders at Goldman Sachs," Solomon said in October on the firm's earnings call. "As we set forth an ambitious long-term strategic plan for the firm, it is a natural point in time for this transition to occur."The CEO has encouraged some of the exits by offering some partners <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/goldman-ceo-solomon-offering-buyouts-to-partners-shrink-senior-ranks-2019-9">generous payouts</a>, people with knowledge of the discussions said in September. In some cases, that might look like a prorated bonus adjusted for their performance, while in others, it may be a larger sum, one of the people said. The preponderance of exits from the securities division has led some to call it a purge, or a sign that Solomon is focused on thinning out enemies or Blankfein lieutenants. It's also true that the division is undergoing large scale changes the likes of which aren't being seen in most of Goldman's other units. Solomon has named investment bankers to securities division roles: Two out of three of the securities division co-heads, Jim Esposito and Marc Nachmann, spent the majority of their careers in the division Solomon ran before getting promoted. Vivek Bantwal, last seen running the firm's credit and structured finance businesses, has been named as chief operating officer of the securities division. Bantwal worked for Nachmann in the investment bank, according to a person with knowledge of their careers.
