The following has been edited for length and clarity. Business Insider has verified his education and employment history.When I picked banking as a career, I had very little idea of what the job would actually involve. I'd never even heard of the big names like Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley — but banking felt novel and challenging to me.My first job out of school was at DBS Bank, where I did corporate foreign exchange sales. I was an engineering graduate and not as savvy as my colleagues, who majored in business administration.After two years, I decided to leave DBS and get my master's in finance at Lancaster University. I wasn't able to secure a job in London, though. I ended up returning to Singapore in the thick of the 1997 Asian Financial Crisis.As jobs were scarce, I decided to take work in risk management instead. That was when I joined Standard Chartered.I was fortunate to have a good boss. He really believed in me and sent me on secondments to London and Hong Kong. That kickstarted my international career.I later moved on to Citibank in 2001, where I worked on global markets. In 2005, I saw that China was liberalizing its financial sector, so I asked my boss to post me to China, and I spent two years there.Working in China was eye-opening. Compared to a small country like Singapore, there were lots more industries, such as mining and shipping, to cover.I then relocated to Hong Kong and switched my focus to investment banking and Asia-centric transactions. That paved the way for me to join UBS as a managing director.<h2 id="6126e89b-83ba-409f-829f-7c6830f6f066">I can play the game, but I don't enjoy the game</h2><div type="image" title="Eric Sim giving a lecture to students." height="768" width="1024" msid="115431925" hostid="261" sizebytes="84092"></div>To be honest, I've always thought of leaving banking. Back in 2005, I thought of returning to college to study architecture. I applied for a spot and got accepted into the program after passing a test.But I decided against it. If I went back to school, I would have to study for five years and accrue two years of practical experience before I could qualify as an architect.That was a huge opportunity cost for me, as I could have made up to a million dollars if I had stayed with banking during the same period. I was in my mid-thirties then, and I still had to pay my mortgage. It didn't make financial sense to leave banking then.That said, I also recognized that while I could play the game, I didn't enjoy it. For most people who go into banking, the norm is to work as much as you can and retire when you're 60.However, that leaves you with very limited choices in life. Your health may deteriorate, and you won't be able to travel as much.So after spending over 20 years in banking, I left UBS in 2017.At that point, my health was still good, and I had sufficient savings. That meant that I could pursue the things I liked, and start a new career in professional speaking and executive coaching.In this phase of my life, I'm now focusing on satisfaction, meaning, and fulfillment. Through my work as a speaker and lecturer, I have been able to share my know-how in banking and career planning with more people.<h2 id="cd01a843-0073-4c6f-b1d9-e32d59c1e82f">It is a lot harder to make it in banking these days</h2><div type="image" title="Eric Sim standing in front of the London Bridge." height="768" width="1024" msid="115431926" hostid="261" sizebytes="39050"></div>Banking is really just a sales job. It is about knowing what your customer wants and then building a relationship. You want to be the first person the client calls when they have a problem.But succeeding in banking is a lot harder these days. In the past, there was less competition and less regulation within the sector. It was easier for the banks to make money.Things are different now. After the 2008 Global Financial Crisis, a lot more people now know how much money bankers can make. There is a lot more competition for banking jobs.But even if I could turn the clock back, I would still pick banking as a career. Banking is an excellent industry for self-development.My advice to young professionals is to seek out job opportunities that allow them to learn. That has been my career principle and it has served me well.

I made it to managing director after 17 years in banking, then I quit. I didn't want to work myself into the ground well into my 60s.

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Nvidia stock is set for more gains as demand for its GPU chips surges, Morgan Stanley says.</li><li>Nvidia's Blackwell GPU is on schedule and is sold out for the next 12 months, the company said. </li></ul><a target="_blank" class="" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/nvda-stock">Nvidia</a> stock is poised for more gains as its GPU chip business continues to see surging demand.That's according to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/ms-stock">Morgan Stanley</a>, which hosted meetings with Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, CFO Colette Kress, and other members of the chip maker's management team for three days in New York City this week.The key takeaway is that "every indication from management is that we are still early in a long term AI investment cycle," Morgan Stanley analyst Joseph Moore said.The bank reiterated its "Overweight" and "Top Pick" ratings and $150 price target, representing potential upside of 12% from current levels.Moore said Nvidia's production ramp of its next-generation Blackwell GPU chip is "progressing on schedule," adding that the product is sold out for the next 12 months."Any new Blackwell orders now that aren't already in queue will be shipped late next year, as they are booked out 12 months, which continues to drive strong short term demand for Hopper which will still be a major factor through the year," Moore explained.Hopper is Nvidia's previous generation of AI-enabled GPU chips, which are being sold in clusters to cloud "hyperscalers" like Amazon, Microsoft, and Meta Platforms.And Nvidia has a new "element" to its story, according to Moore, which is the view that inference computing "is starting to solve much more complex problems which will require a much richer mix of hardware."That should be a boon for Nvidia's GPU chip product set, according to the note."The longer term vision is that deep thinking will allow every company in the world to hire large numbers of "digital AI employees" that can execute challenging tasks," Moore said.He added: "The notion that a more thoughtful, task oriented inference would cause an exponential jump in inference complexity strikes us an important new avenue for growth, and another clear area where NVIDIA's full stack approach to solving these problems adds to the company's considerable lead."Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang made it clear to Morgan Stanley that the company expects to see meaningful growth in 2025 that spills over into 2026, "though he did not quantify," Moore said.Nvidia's shares have increased since the start of October, rising about 10%. Nvidia stock is up 172% since the start of this year.

Briefing media after the announcement of bi-monthly monetary policy review, Das said, "regulatory requirements in top-up housing loans are not being followed by certain entities and it is not a system-level problem." Such cases are being dealt at the supervisory level bilaterally, he said. Banks and <keyword id="19938300" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="NBFCs" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="NBFCs" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="NBFCs">NBFCs</keyword> have also been offering top-ups on other collateralised loans like gold loans. "Such practices may lead to loaned funds being deployed in unproductive segments or for speculative purposes. Banks and NBFCs would, therefore, be well-advised to review such practices and take remedial action," he said. Therefore, he said, banks should adhere to regulatory prescriptions relating to loan-to-value (LTV) ratio, risk weights and monitoring of end use of funds with regard to top-ups. Das further said that the divergence between loan and deposit growth may create asset liability mismatch or <keyword id="22712997" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="liquidity-management-issue" source="keywords">liquidity management issue</keyword>. It may potentially expose the banking system to structural liquidity issues, he said. He urged banks to mobilise deposits through innovative products and services by leveraging their vast branch network. On inflation, Das said, it is moderating but the pace of disinflation is uneven and slow. Pinning hopes on monsoon, which is 7 per cent higher than long-term average so far, the Governor said, it will have a good impact on Kharif output as well as Rabi because of improvement in moisture content in the soil. Surge in top-up housing loans not system-wide issue, says RBI Governor

New Delhi: The central government has approved the appointment of a new Chairman and <keyword id="19899229" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Managing-Director" source="keywords">Managing Director</keyword> of the <keyword id="19934368" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="State-Bank-of-India" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="State Bank of India" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="State Bank of India">State Bank of India</keyword> (<keyword id="19898108" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="sbi" source="keywords">SBI</keyword>) as the current Chairman, <keyword id="20944427" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Dinesh-Kumar-Khara" source="keywords">Dinesh Kumar Khara</keyword>, is set to retire on August 28. According to a notification by the Department of Personnel &amp; Training, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) on August 6 approved the proposal of the Department of Financial Services for the appointment of <keyword id="22230591" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Challa-Sreenivasulu-Setty" source="keywords">Challa Sreenivasulu Setty</keyword> as chairman of SBI. The ACC has approved the appointment of Setty, 59, the current Managing Director (MD) of SBI as the new Chairman of the country's biggest lender, for a period of three years, effective from the date he assumes office, on or after August 28, 2024. The government order states, "The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved the proposal of the Department of Financial Services for the appointment of Shri Challa Sreenivasulu Setty (DOB: 26.09.1965), Managing Director (MD), State Bank of India (SBI) as Chairman, SBI for a period of three (03) years w.e.f. the date of assumption of charge of the office, on or after 28.08.2024." Additionally, Rana Ashutosh Kumar Singh, the current Deputy Managing Director (DMD) of SBI, has been appointed as the new Managing Director. His appointment will take effect from the date he assumes office. The government order read, "The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved the proposal of the Department of Financial Services for appointment of Shri Rana Ashutosh Kumar Singh, Deputy Managing Director (DMD), State Bank of India (SBI) as Managing Director (MD) in SBI with effect from the date of assumption of office." According to SBI, Challa Sreenivasulu Setty joined the Board of SBI as Managing Director in January 2020 and currently oversees International Banking, Global Markets, and Technology wings of the Bank. He has previously headed the Retail &amp; Digital Banking vertical and various task forces/committees formed by the Government of India. Setty holds a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture and is a Certified Associate of the Indian Institute of Bankers. He began his career with SBI in 1988 as a Probationary Officer. Over his three-decade-long career, he has gained rich experience in corporate credit, retail, digital, and international banking, as well as banking in developed markets. Setty has also held key positions within SBI, including Deputy Managing Director - Stressed Assets Resolution Group, Chief General Manager, and General Manager in the Corporate Accounts Group, Deputy General Manager in the Mid-Corporate Group, and Vice President &amp; Head (Syndications) at SBI's New York Branch. Centre approves appointments of new Chairman, Managing Director of State Bank of India

<ul class="summary-list"><li>HSBC has reportedly asked some managers to reapply for their jobs as part of a cost-cutting restructure.</li><li>Bloomberg reported Monday that hundreds of senior staff will likely lose their jobs.</li></ul><a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/hsbc-office-redevelopment-london-flexible-working-corporate-real-estate-2024-7">HSBC</a> has asked some managers to reapply for their jobs in its newly created corporate and institutional banking division as part of a cost-cutting drive, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2024-11-18/hsbc-managers-are-competing-to-keep-their-jobs-in-ceo-s-revamp">Bloomberg reported.</a>Citing people familiar with the matter, Bloomberg said that the interview process has already started, involving senior staff from the bank's commercial banking business and others from the global banking and markets unit.The people told Bloomberg that internal recruitment for the merged division would likely result in hundreds of managing directors and other senior bankers losing their jobs over the coming weeks.They added that general manager titles will also be phased out and replaced by managing director titles at HSBC, which has around 221,000 employees worldwide.The plans have not been finalized and could be subject to change, the people said.HSBC declined to comment when approached by Business Insider.The combined division is part of a restructuring plan introduced by new CEO Georges Elhedery in October.The biggest change announced was the simplification of HSBC's structure, creating Eastern and Western arms to manage its global operations.Under the new structure, HSBC's operations in Asia-Pacific and the Middle East will form the "Eastern markets," while its UK, European, and Americas business will be known as the "Western markets."Other changes include the creation of a new international wealth and premier banking unit.The London-listed bank said in October that its third-quarter pre-tax profits rose roughly 10% year over year to $8.5 billion.Elhedery, who was formerly HSBC's CFO and became CEO in September, told analysts in a call after the third-quarter results that cutting senior roles would lower costs."Now, as a result of a simpler, leaner, more efficient bank, there will be cost saves," he said.He previously told staff in October that they should expect job cuts following the announcement of the revamp, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.reuters.com/business/finance/hsbc-ceo-tells-staff-senior-redundancies-inevitable-after-revamp-2024-10-23/">Reuters reported</a> at the time, citing an internal memo."Inevitably some of our colleagues will face redundancies as we streamline duplicative senior roles," Elhedery said.

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Boeing's still-new CEO, Kelly Ortberg, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/see-inside-boeing-777x-test-aircraft-biggest-twin-engine-airliner-2023-8">faces urgent challenges</a>, including a worker strike.</li><li>Ortberg has to address decades of management issues and concerns from customers, workers, and investors.</li></ul><a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/boeing-new-ceo-kelly-ortberg-2024-7">Kelly Ortberg</a> took the helm at Boeing with no time to spare.Just two months in and he is grappling with striking workers, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/boeing-q3-results-earnings-loss-ceo-vows-iconic-again-2024-10">multi-billion-dollar losses</a>, and a corporate culture gone adrift — all while trying to create a plan to one day <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/boeing-ceo-turnaround-plan-employee-memo-earnings-2024-10">develop a new aircraft</a>.Unlike the lucky new CEO who gets to walk factory floors and office hallways before pulling big levers of change, Ortberg faces pressure to do as much as he can quickly to correct course after more than two decades of misfires by five previous CEOs.Ortberg, who started in August, is trying to set expectations."I'm still in the process of traveling around, meeting our people, particularly two and three levels down," he said during an investor call Wednesday. "We just have to get everybody in the right position, running the right play, focused on the right thing, and I think we've got some work to do there."The pressure to perform is significant. On Wednesday, the company reported a loss of $6.1 billion for the third quarter. The same day, the machinists' union again rejected a company proposal that would have delivered a 35% pay increase over four years. According to one group of analysts, the strike has cost the company <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/boeing-strike-costing-50m-per-day-as-negotiations-restart-2024-10">$50 million a day</a>.Ortberg, in a letter released to employees along with the company's third-quarter results, said Boeing's customers want — and need — the company to succeed."With the right focus and culture, we can be an iconic company and aerospace leader once again," he wrote.The letter offered a reminder that Ortberg has to balance pressures from workers, investors, and Boeing's customers. In the case of the company's commercial business, which builds aircraft for airlines, that ultimately means the flying public.Bill George, the former CEO of medical device maker Medtronic and an executive fellow at Harvard Business School, told BI that Ortberg has to tackle short-term challenges like the worker strike and shoring up cash flow while also making "bold decisions" for the long term."He can't just do one or the other," George said.<h2 id="344697db-407e-4770-8539-290cb807cfc8">Restoring a culture of safety</h2>George said that while the company's commercial, defense, and space businesses each face challenges individually, the broader issue that needs prioritizing is restoring a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/alaska-boeing-737-max-9-door-blowout-company-response-earnings-2024-1">culture of safety after high-profile failures</a>."That's the most important thing he's got to do, but that will take time," George said. He estimates fixing the culture and quality concerns might take three to five years and even longer to embed them deep within the company.George said Ortberg's background as an engineer — and not being a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/boeing-ceo-says-decision-resign-his-own-2024-3">finance type who previously ran the company</a> — should help on the communication front with many of the company's workers."They know if you know what you're talking about or not," George said. "If you don't, they don't have any confidence."He added Ortberg's decision to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/boeing-disaster-american-businesses-greedy-broken-stock-market-wall-street-2024-2">move to the Seattle area, unlike prior chiefs</a>, was wise. The company has deep roots there, particularly in its commercial business."You need to have the whole top team in Seattle and run it out of there," George said.<h2 id="aa7aebc2-c476-4c9a-bb7f-bef3296a434a">Rebuilding trust with employees</h2>Rosalind Franklin, a partner in the global leadership consulting practice at the executive search firm Boyden, told BI that to build trust and be most effective, Ortberg needs to sound a note that is "both vulnerable and yet strong" without being deceptive.She said that means being open about "the hurt" that the company's recent decision to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/boeing-layoffs-strike-777x-delay-freighter-2024-10">cut 10% of its workforce</a> will cause. Ortberg needs to "communicate honesty and acknowledge the fact that this is a really difficult time for the company," Franklin said."When you feel that the CEO is with you, and the CEO is feeling your pain, it makes it more tolerable and provides hope for the future," Franklin said.The need to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/top-business-execs-trending-insights-ai-worker-well-being-roundtable-2024-9">convey empathy</a> is greater than before the pandemic, she said, because many workers have come to expect more from their leaders.Franklin said that doesn't mean shying away from tough decisions."You can't give up what you know you need to do. It's not what you do, it's how you do it," she said.<h2 id="8c691d8b-13f0-4c1e-afad-b5a3768d68d2">Leading from the front</h2>Jeffrey Sonnenfeld, senior associate dean for leadership studies at Yale School of Management, told BI that "usually, the advice we would give someone is not to do too much too soon."In this case, he said, Ortberg doesn't have much choice but to try to fix the problems with labor, with the company's "precarious" financial situation, and with regulators' concerns.Sonnenfeld, who's also the founder of Yale's Chief Executive Leadership Institute, said the task before Ortberg is similar to those once faced by General Motors CEO Mary Barra and Alan Mulally, the former chief at Ford who once ran Boeing's commercial division.Like Boeing, Sonnenfeld said, both GM and Ford are complicated industrial businesses that sit prominently in the public eye. When the automakers' respective CEOs had to wrest their companies from crises, both made "really bold" public statements and were highly visible, he said."They banked a lot on the character of leadership and demonstrated it with accountability and visibility with really good follow-up," Sonnenfeld said.In his letter, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/boeing-corporate-culture-fix-executives-factory-floor-2024-10">Ortberg encouraged senior leaders</a> to close the distance between those in management and those closest to the manufacturing process. "We need to be on the factory floors, in the back shops and in our engineering labs," he wrote.That type of leadership "shows an accountability, shows an accessibility," Sonnenfeld said. "It shows a transparent and less formal style, and that's long past due."<h2 id="3996aed0-3075-47ab-98f6-3c71139b4c7c">A clear plan for the future</h2>George, the former Medtronic chief, said one step Ortberg could take to start restoring confidence and getting people excited about the future would be to announce a program for a new single-aisle aircraft redesigned from scratch."I think he must do that," George said.A new aircraft could leapfrog older designs that he said haven't kept pace with advances in jet engine and avionics in recent decades.Ortberg alluded to such a future in his letter. He wrote that the company has to fix its balance sheet "so that we do have a path to the next commercial aircraft."Richard Aboulafia, an aviation industry analyst who's a managing director at AeroDynamic Advisory, told BI that it's essential to talk about what's coming. He said Ortberg also needs to make clear that the planned job cuts won't compromise safety, add to delays in the company's defense business, or shortchange future product development."He has to reassure investors and everyone else that the situation is stable and also reassure the industry that they're prepared to invest in the future," Aboulafia said. "It's tough to thread that needle."

Moreover, the win by the incumbent government in Maharashtra, further fueled investor confidence in economic stability, sparking a rally in equity markets. At the interbank foreign exchange, the rupee opened at 84.27 and moved in a tight range and touched an early high of 84.22 against the greenback, registering a gain of 7 paise over its previous close. On Monday, the rupee appreciated 12 paise to close at 84.29 against US dollar. "While Donald Trump's aggressive trade policies loom large, the rupee's outlook remains cautiously optimistic. The <keyword id="19899810" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Reserve-Bank-of-India" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Reserve Bank of India" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Reserve Bank of India">Reserve Bank of India</keyword>'s projection of a GDP growth rebound to 7.6 per cent in Q3 has infused fresh confidence in India's economic trajectory. Additionally, a surge in capital inflows is likely to provide robust support," CR Forex Advisors MD Amit Pabari said. Pabari further said that the RBI's vigilant stance will be critical in managing volatility, with interventions likely at key levels to maintain stability. "Given the factors, the USDINR pair appears to face resistance around the 84.50 level, with expectations of trading within a range of 83.80 to 84.50, leaning toward a downside bias," he said. On the global front, US Treasury Secretary nominee Scott Bessent's fiscal deficit reduction agenda capped US Treasury yields, Pabari said. The dollar index, which gauges the greenback's strength against a basket of six currencies, was trading higher by 0.28 per cent at 107.11. Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, rose by 0.33 per cent to USD 73.25 per barrel in futures trade. In the domestic equity market, the 30-share equity benchmark Sensex jumped 167.76 points or 0.21 per cent to 80,277.61 points in early trade, while Nifty jumped 55.80 points or 0.23 per cent to 24,277.70 points. Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) turned net buyers in the capital markets on Monday, purchasing shares worth Rs 9,947.55 crore, according to exchange data. You have a younger sibling you’re mighty envious of. And why not? Unlike you, they seem to enjoy all the freedom and money in the world. They party like there’s no tomorrow, and here you are, stuck in a boring, ultra-disciplined but responsible routine that feels completely devoid of any independence, and mostly, funds. But of late, things are changing. This sibling is in massive trouble and just cannot escape the parent’s wrath anymore. Long story short, the party is over, and it is time to go back home. The rising defaults on this sibling’s part have now begun pulling the entire house down, thereby attracting the regulator’s ire. <h2>The Wild West of <keyword id="113684" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="microfinance" source="Orion">microfinance</keyword> and unsecured loans</h2>It's hard to ignore the issues with microfinance and unsecured loans in India. Many saw them as a small gamble and ignored the rising defaults much like the younger siblings’ tantrums, and now they find themselves in hot waters. The skyrocketing instances of non-payments aren't a micro-issue anymore and are threatening the stability of the entire banking system. In the quarter ended September 30, 2024, 5 of India’s 8 largest private sector <keyword id="19934118" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="banks" source="keywords">banks</keyword> reported a steep rise in their bad loan book, mostly thanks to microfinance loans. Some banks, in a bid to strengthen their fortress against these <keyword id="142154" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="bad-loans" source="Orion">bad loans</keyword>, have significantly upped their provisions. For instance, IndusInd Bank set aside Rs 525 crore during July and September 2024 to battle the menace of defaults on microfinance loans, which make up about 9% of its total loan book. See, banks rely heavily on their interest income, which they earn from advancing loans. Any loan where the borrower has not paid interest to the bank or defaulted for 90 days or more becomes bad, i.e. an NPA, or non-performing asset for the bank. And who likes things going bad? Simply put, there has been a steep rise in three areas, much to the dislike of banks and MFIs (micro-finance institutions). But hey, it's mostly their doing! <ol><li>GNPA ratio (gross net performing assets): The quantum of non-performing assets a bank has in proportion to its total assets.</li><li>Provision: The amount banks set aside to take care of such NPAs.</li><li>Slippage ratio: The rate at which good girls go bad, or the speed at which good loans turn into NPAs</li></ol>But how are these plaguing the Indian banking sector? And what does the road ahead look like? We decode it for you. <h2> Microfinance: A not-so-micro-menace</h2>Microfinance loans were initially brought forth for low-income households and individuals i.e. for those who might not generally have access to traditional ways of credit, like bank loans and more. They don’t require collateral or an asset to be pledged in lieu of the loan, making it a tad bit easier for borrowers. As of June 2024, the amount of outstanding loans in the microfinance industry stood at a staggering Rs 4,20,256 crore. Of this, NBFC-MFIs accounted for 40% and banks made for 33% of these. In 2022, RBI, in a bid to inspire some competition in this space, did something radical-they did away with the ceiling on how much interest MFIs could charge their customers. Previously, MFIs could add up to 12% to their cost of acquiring funds to determine the final interest rate chargeable to the consumer. So, assuming that Bank A incurs a 5% cost to acquire funds for further loaning, A could charge up to 17% interest from the end consumer. So, interest rates were in the hands of MFIs, and boy, did they have a gala time with it. Instead of spurring some healthy competition, as RBI expected, MFIs and banks went rogue and all guns blazing, competing for the title of “Who will charge the highest interest?” Recently, RBI banned 4 microfinance institutions (MFIs), namely Asirvad Micro Finance Limited, Arohan Financial Services Limited, DMI Finance Private Limited, and <keyword id="20117932" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="navi-finserv" source="keywords">Navi Finserv</keyword> from disbursing loans effective October 21, 2024. Why? Because they were charging 14% extra interest over their original cost of funds. To maintain their loan books (and pockets), banks and NBFCs resorted to shady practices like netting off loans, which RBI has now advised MFIs against. Here, lenders allow borrowers to settle a previous outstanding loan by issuing them a new loan! As crazy as it sounds, it helped banks to report less of their total assets as NPAs, since the new credit would cover pending instalments of the borrower’s previous loan. Then there was the issue of borrowers overleveraging, i.e. taking multiple loans using different IDs from various lenders and then failing to honour any of them. The consequence? Banks and NBFCs end up with massive NPAs. Data from credit bureaus suggests that over the last quarter, there was a 17.2% rise in the number of borrowers who had 5 or more active loans at the same time. <h2>Growth &gt; Caution</h2>It's an age-old tale unfolding yet again in India’s banking sector- Icarus flew too close to the sun and eventually, fell to its death. Between April and June 2024, NBFCs microfinance portfolio jumped by 2.7%. If you see this in terms of loan sources, microfinance loans issued by banks grew by 11.2% in Q1FY25. But the same portfolio in NBFCs swelled by almost double-23.9%. While most of these loans had an average ticket size between Rs 30,000-50,000, there was a sharp spike in the number of loans that had a ticket size of Rs 80,000 or more. Data suggests that as of March 2024, more than 12% of all microfinance borrowers had over 4 or more active loans. In dating parlance, this is a classic case of borrowers going polyamorous, minus the honesty and transparency. Not the best of situations, you'd agree! <h2>Will banks and NBFCs stand up to this stress?</h2>If their results for Q2FY25 are to be believed, NBFCs are not handling the pressure all that well. Or even slightly well. Only a few banks like Bank of Baroda (BoB), ICICI, and Indian Bank were up for the battle, even witnessing a decline in their loan delinquencies. Some others, like IndusInd Bank, saw their stock dip by a massive 16.2% over the last 5 days. Its slippages in the previous quarter burgeoned from Rs 15.3 billion in Q1FY25 to Rs 17.9 billion in Q2. As a result, the bank pushed a staggeringly high amount of money to create an NPA cushion for itself. While its management has highlighted its preference for secured lending, that was hardly reflected in its actions during the quarter, where growth in unsecured personal loans remained exceptionally high at over 7% on a QoQ basis. Turns out, only 44% of customers in IndusInd Banks’ microfinance loan portfolio were exclusive to it. The rest 47% were, you guessed it right-polyamorous! 27% had borrowed from another lender as well, apart from IndusInd Bank, while 20% were those who had outstanding loans with two other lenders, apart from IndusInd Bank. IndusInd Bank’s credit card segment did not miss the NPA bus and accounted for 7-8% of its GNPAs. Canara Bank’s total slippages during the previous quarter jumped to Rs 11.1 billion, up by 24.7% QoQ, and making up for 3.6% of its total loans. As for Bandhan Bank, its gross NPA for Q2FY25 inched up on a QoQ basis, up from 4.23% in Q1, to 4.68% in the second quarter. IDFC Bank’s heavy provisioning for its NPAs marred its profits significantly, causing its PAT (profit after tax) to dip by 73% on a YoY basis. Data from ICRA Analytics suggest that the AUM (asset under management) growth in microfinance loans and unsecured (personal and business) loans by the NBFCs will moderate to 10-12% and 19-21%, respectively, in FY2025 compared to 30% and 38%, in FY2024. Says A M Karthik, Senior Vice President &amp; Co-Group Head, Financial Sector Ratings, ICRA, “As bank funds constitute a larger share in the overall funding of NBFCs, a slower credit flow from banks to the NBFCs will compress their AUM growth. The NBFCs in unsecured and digital lending businesses shall face a higher squeeze in funding compared to others, and the unsecured lending space will continue to be a source of stress in the near term.” There has been uninhibited growth in <keyword id="6051027" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Unsecured-loan" source="Orion">unsecured loan</keyword>s, apart from just the microfinance segment. For instance, Axis Bank’s gross slippages jumped by Rs 4,443 crore, largely thanks to its unsecured business. The same is the case with Yes Bank, which saw 35–40% of its retail slippages emerging from the unsecured loan portfolio. <keyword id="6376194" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="kotak-mahindra" source="Orion">Kotak Mahindra</keyword> Bank was also quick to follow Yes Bank’s suit, with around 35%-40% of its slippages coming from credit cards. <h2>How is the road ahead?</h2>While RBI has just cracked its whip and served a warning at the moment, experts at Morgan Stanley believe that more changes (read regulatory lashes) are underway. Moreover, with both festive and wedding seasons underway in our country, unsecured lending might pick up momentum, much to the disdain of the calibrated approach banks have been taking towards it so far. But if the situation doesn't improve, RBI will not waste any time in becoming the typical tyrannical <keyword id="19897820" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="bollywood" source="keywords">Bollywood</keyword> headmaster who runs his dominion with an iron fist. His name adorns the New York Public Library and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/steve-schwarzman-name-buildings-yale-2015-5">buildings on prominent university campuses</a> such as Yale's and MIT's. He and his wife, Christine Hearst Schwarzman, have been guests and supporters of the Metropolitan Museum's star-studded Met Gala fundraising extravaganza. Steve is wearing white tie attire, and Christine is wearing a gold." height="2656" width="3984" msid="115333170" hostid="261" sizebytes="476358"></div>Little is known, however, about how the private-equity titan manages his money.At a conference last year, Schwarzman suggested that the firm he <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/blackstone-deal-to-expand-hq-in-latest-sign-of-growth-2024-6">cofounded in 1985</a> was sufficient to handle his financial affairs."I own a lot of stock, and I invest in all of our funds, so the firm is my family office," Schwarzman said at the Bank of America Securities Financial Services gathering, according to an AlphaSense transcript.Business Insider has learned, however, that Schwarzman also has a family office with a name that harkens back to his childhood. Pennypack is run by a former Blackstone tax expert and employs dozens of people, including housekeepers, lawyers, and personal assistants, according to public records and conversations with people with knowledge of Schwarzman's money-management tactics, some of whom requested anonymity to speak about his private matters.It's secretive, with a nondisclosure agreement at the ready for its contractors, and provides support for at least some of Schwarzman's charitable organizations and political dealings. Pennypack also helps care for and manage many of the Schwarzman family's properties.Here's a look at what it takes to manage billionaire Steve Schwarzman's wealth.<h2 id="061bb84c-1342-46df-a7e6-0fa5a6a820d1">Most of Schwarzman's wealth is tied up in Blackstone</h2>Schwarzman cofounded Blackstone in 1985 with his former boss, Pete Peterson, and $400,000 in seed money. Today, it manages <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/blackstone-third-quarter-earnings-private-credit-insurance-unit-aum-2024-10">more than $1 trillion</a>, making it the largest alternative-asset manager in the world.He is the biggest single shareholder, with a 19% stake, surpassing institutional giants like Vanguard. Based on a recent stock price of $181.17, his stake is worth $41.7 billion, which means that more than two-thirds of Schwarzman's wealth comes directly from his equity in Blackstone.As a shareholder, Schwarzman also benefits from <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/blackstone-ceo-steve-schwarzman-earnings-in-2017-2018-3">cash dividends</a> the company pays its stock owners. Public records show that in 2023, he took home $777 million in dividends, a 29% decline from the more than $1 billion in dividends he took home in 2022. Before Blackstone went public, Schwarzman received cash dividends as a partner in the firm.Schwarzman is also the largest individual investor in Blackstone's funds, a spokesperson for him said."Mr. Schwarzman is the largest individual investor in both Blackstone's stock and our funds — demonstrating his full alignment with the success of the firm and its clients," the spokesperson wrote.BI could find no evidence that Pennypack invests on behalf of Schwarzman, with no regulatory filings showing that it owns stock.This is unusual but not unheard of, Marc Sharpe, a professor and the chair of the Family Office Association, said. He pointed to Michael Dell, the founder of Dell Computer who invests through MSD Capital but also has a separate office to manage and run his personal affairs."There is no single correct way to define a family office," Sharpe wrote to BI. "Oftentimes, they're described as a buffet menu of financial plus concierge services that wealthy families might utilize."<h2 id="37457fb4-3ead-4cc8-a639-7ed014e15612">The name is linked to his childhood</h2>The Pennypack name appears to be a throwback to Schwarzman's youth. His family lived on Pennypack Road after moving from Philadelphia to its neighboring suburbs when Schwarzman was a teenager. Property records show that his parents bought their home, which abuts Pennypack Creek, a 22-mile creek that empties into the Delaware River, in 1960 and sold it decades later, in 2004.<div type="image" title="A railroad bridge over a river, surrounded by a forest in autumn" height="3765" width="5648" msid="115333168" hostid="261" sizebytes="2645164"></div>Pennypack LLC was incorporated in 2018 in <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-done-with-delaware-other-corporations-unlikely-to-follow-2024-2">Delaware</a>. It's unclear whether the entity existed before in a different form, and representatives for Schwarzman declined to clarify.According to Blackstone's 2023 annual report, it provides Schwarzman's family office with "offices, technology, and support," though Schwarzman is responsible for reimbursing Blackstone for the costs. Until this year, the company was registered to a Blackstone office address, according to corporate filings.<div type="image" title="Blackstone signage outside Blackstone Group headquarters in NYC" height="2268" width="3400" msid="115333173" hostid="261" sizebytes="564594"></div>Like many family offices, Pennypack is secretive. According to a copy of an <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-nondisclosure-agreements-silence-control-workers-silicon-valley-2021-7">NDA </a>for vendors that work with Pennypack, obtained by BI, signees are not allowed to disclose information about the "Schwarzman Group."According to the document, the Schwarzman Group includes "all employees of Pennypack, all employees of all residences of Stephen A. Schwarzman and/or Christine Hearst Schwarzman regardless of the location of such residences; and all business entities that Pennypack manages, operates or is associated with, and the employees and agents of those businesses."<h2 id="ce719a95-bc69-41be-9292-52d9184d267d">Who runs Pennypack?</h2>Pennypack is run by John Magliano, a former Blackstone executive and accountant. Magliano's LinkedIn profile says he has been the president of a family office since 2017.He spent more than 18 years with Blackstone, including as the CFO of its private-equity group, which runs its control investments in businesses, and as a managing director of Blackstone's tax group, which helps prepare its tax returns and studies the tax implications of business decisions. After leaving to run Pennypack, Magliano stayed on as a senior advisor to Blackstone through 2021.Schwarzman thanks Magliano in the acknowledgments section of his autobiography, along with Paul A. White, another Pennypack executive. The pair are listed as officers in LLCs tied to a string of Schwarzman's recent home purchases, including his $32.5 million purchase of a mansion on the tony Easton Street in <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nantucket-homes-give-away-free-move-houses-cost-reason-2024-4">Nantucket, Massachusetts,</a> which marked the largest private-home sale in the island's history at the time.<div type="image" title="Postcard of the White Elephant, an iconic Nantucket hotel, with sailboats in front of it." height="2673" width="4212" msid="115333174" hostid="261" sizebytes="1269842"></div>The two men are also named as officers of LLCs linked to the $43 million purchase and renovation of two <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gilded-age-mansions-photos-wealth-2024-9">historic Newport, Rhode Island, mansions</a>: Ocean View and Miramar, the latter of which Schwarzman said he would <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.townandcountrymag.com/society/money-and-power/a61852950/steve-schwarzman-miramar-private-museum/">turn into a museum</a> when he dies. They are also named as officers of an LLC tied to Schwarzman's $100 million purchase of an estate named Conholt Park, which is about a 30-minute drive from Stonehenge in Wiltshire, England.<h2 id="665829e5-e31a-44d6-b0d6-9cfaacbcba9a">The staff</h2>A person with direct knowledge of Pennypack's operations told BI that Pennypack employed over 100 people in various roles, from executive assistants to the housekeepers who clean and maintain his homes.One employee on LinkedIn described their role at Pennypack as providing administrative support to "Mrs.," an apparent reference to Hearst Schwarzman. Listed duties included managing her personal projects and board and foundation endeavors, drafting emails, preparing her for speaking engagements, and tracking auctions for purchases.Another Pennypack employee described themself on LinkedIn as a housekeeper.A list of contractors obtained by BI shows that Pennypack has hired landscapers, ornamental plasterers, construction workers, and architects. The building conservationist linked to Miramar, the Gilded Age Newport home he bought for $27 million in 2021, is on the list.<div type="image" title="Black and white photo of Miramar, taken between 1917-1927" height="1122" width="1536" msid="115333180" hostid="261" sizebytes="64092"></div>Pennypack also appears to play in role in the Schwarzman's family's security. In June, the family office purchased a radio call sign tied to Ocean View in Newport. The Federal Communications Commission application said that "radios will be used to coordinate private security details."<h2 id="d929c107-fbef-4672-bcc4-3c5d65f98c0b">Schwarzman's charities and politics</h2>Pennypack's officers also play a role in <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/steve-schwarzman-comments-on-report-cards-2015-11">Schwarzman's charitable works</a>. Public filings show that Magliano is the treasurer and director at the Stephen A. Schwarzman Foundation, Schwarzman's main philanthropic arm. Its recent donations include $350 million to MIT for a building dedicated to the study of artificial intelligence and computing, as well as more than $220 million to create a new Centre for the Humanities at Oxford, which is set to include the study of <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/blackstone-steve-schwarzman-on-ai-infrastructure-investment-goals-2024-7">ethics in AI</a>.<div type="image" title="A view of the New York Public Library - Stephen A. She grew up in Jonesboro, Arkansas, where her parents were professors at the local university. After graduating from New York University in 2007, she thought she would work at Goldman Sachs for a few years to save up for graduate school, perhaps to study public policy or become a lawyer. But even when the financial crisis hit, which was an opportune time to go back to school, she didn't want to leave."At Goldman, you are given tremendous responsibility and opportunity young in your career if you prove yourself able," she told Business Insider in an interview. "I've never once been bored, and so it's an easy choice to stay."The 39-year-old is based in Atlanta and runs the Southeast region of Goldman Sach's private wealth division. While wealth management clients skew older, the division has a pipeline of rich millennial founders who work with the investment banking arm. Boals Moeller said these clients in their 30s and 40s are more likely to want more than investment advice, desiring services like concierge healthcare and bill pay that make their lives easier. To keep these clients loyal, she leads an initiative to cater to younger clients, including heirs and self-made entrepreneurs, and another that focuses on women customers."They're busy. They want simplicity. They need good people around them to help," she said.During the dealmaking drought, the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/goldman-sachs-private-wealth-management-asset-david-solomon-2023-1">wealth management</a> business gained new prominence. "Quite frankly, private wealth management at Goldman Sachs has never been as much of a focus for the firm as it is today," division cohead John Mallory told BI in 2023.Boals Moeller said the business's current stature is the result of investments more than a decade in the making. She served as chief of staff to wealth management head Tucker York during the financial crisis. Around 2010, she embarked on a listening tour of every wealth office. The advisor feedback led to the bank expanding its offerings beyond investment and tax planning advice."We knew this going way back, and it certainly continues today, which is we are not purely an investment solution for our clients," she said. "Investments are critical and core to our work, but increasingly we're seeing that with the next generation of wealth owners today, they are seeking simplicity and solutions in all aspects of their life."Goldman Sachs' family office offering, Apex, launched a few years later. Now, the division offers chief financial officer services to help clients with not just estate planning but also lifestyle services like cybersecurity.Catering to these younger clients, whether they are old-money heirs or startup founders celebrating their first windfall, requires meeting them where they are. That usually isn't over a steak and martini lunch or 18 holes at the golf course. What entices these clients more, Boals Moeller said, is getting to meet like-minded people.Goldman Sachs holds events and conferences, often with star-studded lineups or in scenic locales. In August, Boals Moeller hosted a reception in Atlanta with singer Ciara and Marc-Kwesi Farrell, the founder of a rum brand that provided custom cocktails. In October 2023, Goldman Sachs hosted a conference in Deer Valley where billionaire Patrón founder John Paul DeJoria talked about keeping a business empire in the family. Sustainability and sports are particularly interesting to this demographic, with Goldman Sachs hosting a tour of a waste-to-clean-energy power plant in Copenhagen and bringing in Michelle Hynik, president of women's football club Utah Royals, to the Deer Valley summit.Advisors also introduce clients to each other when appropriate, such as a pre-IPO founder to an entrepreneur who has already been through the process."A lot of effort is put into helping people not only just manage the risk and obviously the investment side of things, but also the broader piece, which is how do we help you have an amazing corporate outcome from the sale of your business, and how do we help you as a family appropriately prepare for that?" she said.Advisors can meet with families one-on-one for financial education. However, many of these millennial and Gen-Z clients prefer digital education on their own time. Goldman Sachs has courses for children of clients as early as 15 years old. This Semester at GS program has six one-hour sessions that span trading talks from executives in global markets as well as personal finance topics like how to think about a credit score. These virtual sessions are cameras off, Boals Moeller notes."You don't have to be at a desk," she said. "It's not another hour of homework."
