<br /><strong><br />‘Sam Bahadur’ </strong><br /><br />Known widely as Sam Bahadur, he was the Chief of Army Staff during 1971 Bangladesh Liberation war.<br /><br />He was the first general of the modern Indian army to be made a field marshal. Manekshaw’s career lasted four decades, and saw five wars. Iconic Indian pediatrician, <keyword id="5722920" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="dilip-mahalanabis" source="Orion">Dilip Mahalanabis</keyword>, who pioneered the use of oral rehydration theory for treatment of diarrhoeal diseases and development of <keyword id="6561144" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="ors" source="Orion">ORS</keyword>, died at city-based hospital in <keyword id="6354925" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="kolkata" source="Orion">Kolkata</keyword> on Sunday. He was 88.<br /><br />His family sources said that he was admitted to a private hospital in Kolkata a couple of weeks back with a number of age-related ailments including lung problems. However, all the efforts of the doctors to revive his health conditions failed and ultimately, he died on Sunday.<br /><br />Oral rehydration theory is an alternative to intravenous rehydration theory for prevention and treatment of dehydration from diarrhoea in an emergency situation when intravenous therapy is not available.<br /><br />As per the estimates of the <keyword id="43588" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="world-health-organization" source="Orion">World Health Organization</keyword> (WHO), oral rehydration theory is estimated to have saved over 60 million lives.<br /><br />He was awarded the Pollin Prize in 2002 and <keyword id="15276484" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="prince-mahidol-award" source="Orion">Prince Mahidol Award</keyword> in 2006. He was elected as a foreign member of the <keyword id="449075" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="royal-swedish-academy-of-sciences" source="Orion">Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences</keyword> in 1994. However, there was hardly any recognition from the Union government for his contribution in a field of medicine that saved millions of lives.<br /><br />To recall, Bangladesh came under the grip of cholera during the liberation war there in 1971. Mahalanabis was then serving as a doctor in a refugee camp at the Indo-Bangladesh border area at Bangaon in West Bengal. To protect the people at the camp from cholera and diarrhoea, he prepared an oral solution mixing salt and sugar in water. This solution worked as a miracle in preventing these two fatal diseases and the solution later became famous as ORS.<br /><br />Mahalanabis completed his degree in MBBS from Calcutta Medical College and Hospital in 1958. Later, he secured his Diploma in Child Health from London.<br /><br />A pall of gloom has set in among the medical fraternity in the state following his demise.

War games are addictive and while some of the games like “Age of Empires” are commended for encouraging the youth to think more strategically, a vast majority of these games contain violence, which may have adverse effects on the psyche of the young.<br />
<br />
Therefore, many parents encourage their wards to invest more time in mastering strategic board games like Chess instead of video games. But, war veterans like Gen. Dwight Eisenhower point out that “No board game can replicate the conditions of the battlefield or the manoeuvres of geo-strategy”. What then is a viable alternative to the war video games?<br />
<br />
Bridge, the most popular card game in the world (played by an estimated 60+ million players) teaches you more about strategy and war than any other game can; even more than Chess.<br />
<br />
Bridge is considered more of a strategic game than chess because unlike chess, Bridge is a team game and depends considerably on the subtleties of communication.<br />
<br />
Interestingly, these communications (when players call out to their teams/allies while bidding or playing a significant card) may or may not necessarily be the truth. So the players have a choice – to tell the truth or deceive their opponents.<br />
<br />
Consequently, every message the player sends needs to be ‘decoded’ correctly by his/her allies and incorrectly by their foes. Remember, unlike in chess where the opponent’s counters are visible, in bridge, a player’s cards are visible only to her/him. This corroborates much more closely with battles and wars where propaganda, feints and outright deceit is used in equal measure to outfox and out-manoeuvre the enemy.<br />
<br />
Compare this to chess where machines have long beaten human players (IBM scored a priceless PR coup when it used its super-computer named Deep Blue to beat grandmaster Garry Kasparov in the 1990s). While it did seem improbable at the time, the fact is that it wasn’t difficult for a computer capable of making billions of calculations each second by analysing its opponent’s moves. But the same is not possible with Bridge because computers cannot distinguish between truth and lies (eventually of course, I expect artificial intelligence to remove this disparity).<br />
<br />
History records great generals and leaders as bridge players. America’s Gen. Dwight ‘Ike’ Eisenhower, who went on to become America’s 34th President from 1953 to 1961 was an avid bridge player. One of his compatriots, Gen. Alfred Gruenther, subsequently the NATO Commander, also shouldered the responsibility of being the president of the World Bridge Federation for many years.<br />
<br />
President Eisenhower’s Secretary of State and a World War I veteran John Foster Dulles was so passionate about the game that in addition to being one of the President’s bridge partners, he encouraged the state department to conduct bridge tournaments across US embassies and consulates the world over. Closer home, Deng Xiaoping, the builder of modern China, was an avid bridge player who, it is said, even had a private railroad car for his games. One of India’s finest soldiers, Sam Manekshaw, the ‘first Indian Army officer to be promoted to Field Marshall’ was a bridge player as was his friend and colleague Lt Gen JFR Jacob, the man who, along with the Field Marshal, played a larger than life role during the liberation of Bangladesh from Pakistan in 1971.<br />
<br /> I will quote arguably the world’s greatest war leader and strategist – the legendary Chinese military general Sun Tzu. His philosophy on <keyword id="34454" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="leadership">leadership</keyword> is immortalised in his widely influential book, The Art of War. His take on ‘deception’ forms one of his fundamental philosophies on leadership where he says, “All warfare is based on deception. Hence, when able to attack, we must seem unable; when using our forces, we must seem inactive; when we are near, we must make the enemy believe we are far away; when far away, we must make him believe we are near.” I’m quite sure, he would’ve made an incredible Bridge player.<br />

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>REUTERS/Jose Luis Gonzalez</span></p><p class="caption">A worker building a barrier on the US-Mexico border.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>In 1990 there were 15 border walls in the world - today there are almost 70.</p><p>Not only is the number of brick divisions increasing; the number of deaths at borders is as well.</p><p>Border restrictions have been in the limelight over the past year in the US, where President-elect Donald Trump has promised to build a "giant wall" on the country's border with Mexico.</p><p>But in Europe, which has used such barriers to try to restrict the hundreds of thousands of migrants who have approached the continent over the past few years, many of them fleeing violence in the Middle East, the deterrents have been found to be a flawed solution.</p><p>That's the view of Reece Jones, a professor of geography at the University of Hawaii in Manoa. He explored the motives for building border walls in his 2012 book "Border Walls: Security and the War on Terror in the United States, India, and Israel."</p><h2>Why the walls are being erected</h2><p>Jones' research - and data collected by Elisabeth Vallet at the University of Quebec at Montreal - has shown that just after World War II, there were fewer than five border walls in the world. Now there are 70.</p><p>"There is a perception that in some past era most borders were secured with walls. This is false," Jones told Business Insider in an email. "The great wall of China, for example, is a historical anomaly. In the past, many cities had walls to protect resources, but long walls in remote frontier areas were extremely rare until the past twenty years."</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>FAB/Reuters</span></p><p class="caption">A man hammering a section of the Berlin Wall near the Brandenburg Gate after the opening of the East German border.</p></div><p></p></div></div>Jones said the increase was for two big reasons: security and deterrence.</p><p>"First, in the 1990s border walls were associated with the Berlin Wall, which had a negative stigma and was not something that a democratic state would build," Jones said. "After the war on terror began, the stigma disappeared and border walls were transformed into something that was almost obligatory for states to build to protect their population from external threats."</p><p>The desire to protect a nation by building walls is a sentiment that has been particularly potent throughout Europe in the past year. The terrorist attacks on France, Belgium, and Germany - perpetrated in part by supporters of the Islamic State terrorist group who had entered Europe as refugees - exacerbated this feeling.</p><p>But the aversion to having thousands of refugees entering a territory does not stem only from a fear of terrorism. Public support, cost, differences in cultures, religions, and mores, as well as fear of the unknown have driven countries to erect walls hoping to keep people from even trying to cross borders.</p><h2>Why the walls are not working</h2><p>"Since the 1990s, the US and EU have tried a deterrence model, which attempts to deter migration by making the journey difficult through the construction of walls and the deployment of more agents and surveillance equipment," Jones said. "The deterrence strategy has failed."</p><p>Jones said that while the deterrence strategy had made journeys to the US and the European Union more difficult, the number of people attempting the journey did not diminish. "Instead, it has meant that there have been a staggering number of deaths at borders," he added. According to the International Organization for Migration, more than 10,000 people have died trying to cross a border since the start of 2015.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_left"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span><a href="http://www.apimages.com/metadata/Index/APTOPIX-Libya-Migrants/67dec1bc43e74dbfb19729911903d382/158/0">Santi Palacios/AP</a></span></p><p class="caption">Migrants from Mali, Bangladesh, and other countries waiting to be rescued on board a dinghy in the Mediterranean Sea.</p></div><p></p></div></div>"These deaths are not accidental, but are directly related to the use of deterrence strategy and the construction of walls on borders," Jones said.</p><p>Europe's refugee crisis, the biggest the continent has faced since World War II, has led to the erection of numerous barriers to keep out migrants.</p><p><a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/us-europe-migrants-austria-idUSKCN11Q0R0" target="_blank">Austria, for example, is erecting a physical border to keep out migrants travelling through Hungary</a>, <a href="http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/europe/norway-border-fence-russia-refugees-refugee-crisis-schengen-syria-war-a7208806.html" target="_blank">while Norway is also building a wall to keep out immigrants from Russia</a> and <a href="http://www.balkaninsight.com/en/article/slovenian-migrant-border-fence-could-lead-to-violence-10-24-2016" target="_blank">Slovenia has done the same on its border with Croatia</a>.</p><p>This and the lack of safe, legal routes has forced refugees to take increasingly dangerous routes to reach the continent. In 2016 alone, <a href="http://data.unhcr.org/mediterranean/regional.php" target="_blank">more than 4,000 people have died trying to cross the Mediterranean</a>.</p><p>All over Europe and even within the Schengen Area - which is designed to allow for the free movement of goods and people between countries that are part of it - police controls and new fences are almost commonplace. Politicians have said overstretched services and systems and the inability to control the identity of the thousands of people on the move were causes for the walls and police controls.</p><p>European governments have mostly described those measures as only temporary, yet many governments keep renewing the controls whenever the end date draws close, citing a situation still not under control.</p><p>"In the short term, it seems that many countries are turning to walls," Jones said. "Even Norway built a border wall in 2016. However, in the longer term, the walls are not very effective at preventing movement. They just divert it to other more dangerous crossing points and they are expensive to build and maintain."</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Mike Nudelman/Business Insider</span></p></div><p></p></div></div>Jones added that he thought the border walls inside the Schengen Area would not become a permanent fixture in the European landscape. "Fear and misinformation have resulted in some restrictions on free movement in the EU, but that eventually the benefits will be acknowledged and it will be maintained," Jones said.</p><p>Though Jones is optimistic about free movement inside Europe, the worldwide trend at the moment is one of countries turning inward. The public is increasingly unhappy with globalisation, with both Trump's election and the British vote to exit the EU believed to be evidence of this.</p><p>But as the border controls stack up, so do the deaths.
