The Bangladesh Cricket Board has sought security assurance from the country's army chief for conducting the <keyword id="21536718" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="womens-T20-World-Cup" source="keywords">women's T20 World Cup</keyword>, scheduled to be held in October 3-20 amid <keyword id="20444027" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="political-unrest" source="keywords">political unrest</keyword> in the country following ouster of former Prime Minister <keyword id="20024637" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sheikh-Hasina" source="keywords">Sheikh Hasina</keyword>. The women's T20 World Cup is slated to be held in two Bangladesh cities ---- Sylhet and Mirpur. According to Cricbuzz, the <keyword id="20013507" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="BCB" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="BCB" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="BCB">BCB</keyword> has written to Bangladesh's army chief of staff General Waker-Uz-Zaman seeking security assurance for organising the tournament. The warm-up round for the women's T20 World Cup is set to begin on September 27. The <keyword id="19901177" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ICC" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="ICC" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="ICC">ICC</keyword> has been monitoring the situation after violent protests against the government led to deaths of hundreds of people and culminated with the resignation and fleeing of former PM Hasina. It is expected that the ICC could also opt to host the tournament at a different venue within a similar time zone, which leaves India, UAE and Sri Lanka as the choices. The current BCB president Nazmul Hasan Papon has also fled the country along with a few others board directors, who were believed to be having the backing of the former PM's party Awami League. However, a few other directors remain in <keyword id="19936600" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Dhaka" source="keywords">Dhaka</keyword> and hope that the tournament will not be shifted from Bangladesh. BCB umpiring committee chairman Iftekhar Ahmed Mithu said, "We are trying to host the tournament." "To be honest, there are not too many among us present in the country and on Thursday (August 8) we have sent a letter to the Army Chief regarding assurance about the security of the ICC Women's T20 World Cup as we have only two months in hand," he said. "ICC communicated with us two days back and we replied that we will come back to them shortly." "After the (interim) government is formed, still we have to give them assurance of the security considering it cannot be given by the board or any anyone else apart from a law enforcement agency of the country and so we sent the letter and after getting written assurance from them (the Army), we will inform the ICC," he added. BCB seeks Bangladesh army's assurance for hosting women's T20 World Cup

The <keyword id="129260" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bangladesh-army">Bangladesh Army</keyword> on Sunday said some 3,500 soldiers would maintain their presence on the streets to strictly enforce social distancing to combat the coronavirus threat and would return to their barracks only on the orders of the government. Chief of Army Staff General Aziz Ahmed said that his troops would do "everything possible" under Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's leadership to fight the deadly coronavirus pandemic as their presence on the streets appeared to have "highly energised" the common people and the civil administration. The virus has claimed the lives of five people and infected 48 others in the country, according to health officials. The Army will render its service in aid to civil power as long as the government wants, the Daily Sun newspaper quoted the four-star general as saying. General Ahmed said that the troops' deployment seemed to have mentally relieved the people and the officials amid fears about the course of the pandemic in the coming days. Prime Minister Hasina called the campaign against COVID-19 a "war" as her government has called out the armed forces to assist nationwide the administration in combating the pandemic in the country. A defence ministry spokesman, meanwhile, said that some 3,000 military personnel and 400 Navy troopers were deployed across the country mainly to enforce "social distancing" while the Air Force was kept ready for ferrying men and medical aid to any part of Bangladesh. He said that the new batches of troops will replace periodically the personnel already deployed on the COVID-19 duty while the previous ones would be quarantined on return to their barracks for safety. Defence ministry's inter service public relations directorate earlier said that the personnel would prepare lists of coronavirus-infected persons, extend cooperation to the local administrations to ensure quarantining of people who returned from abroad alongside enforcing the social distancing. The troops are seen patrolling the streets in capital Dhaka and other cities mounting megaphones on their vehicles to ask people to stay indoors and disperse usual neighbourhood crowds. Authorities apparently ordered a nationwide virtual lockdown shutting offices, businesses and halting all modes of public transports this week days after closing schools and restricting overseas flight operations. Bangladesh declared a 10-day nationwide holiday beginning March 26 in view of the COVID-19 outbreak, and called in Army troops to enforce social distancing as the World Health Organisation (WHO) called it the most crucial means to prevent the spread of the virus. ARSA earlier took responsibility for coordinating several attacks on security posts last week that sparked clashes between the group and a retaliatory effort from the Myanmar army. According to the United Nations High Commissioner on Refugees, the UN's agency responsible for handling refugee crises, 58,600 Rohingya have fled to Bangladesh from Myanmar since the conflict escalated. The treatment of Myanmar's roughly 1.1 million Rohingya is the biggest challenge facing leader Aung San Suu Kyi, accused by Western critics of not speaking out for the Muslim minority that has long complained of persecution.The clashes and army crackdown have killed nearly 400 people and more than 11,700 "ethnic residents" have been evacuated from the area, the government said, referring to the non-Muslim residents.It marks a dramatic escalation of a conflict that has simmered since October, when a smaller Rohingya attack on security posts prompted a military response dogged by allegations of rights abuses."A total of 2,625 houses from Kotankauk, Myinlut and Kyikanpyin villages and two wards in Maungtaw were burned down by the ARSA extremist terrorists," the state-run Global New Light of Myanmar said. Bangladesh is also growing increasingly hostile to Rohingya, more than 400,000 of whom live in the poor South Asian country after fleeing Myanmar since the early 1990s.Jalal Ahmed, 60, who arrived in Bangladesh on Friday with a group of about 3,000 after walking from Kyikanpyin for almost a week, said he believed the Rohingya were being pushed out of Myanmar."The military came with 200 people to the village and started fires...All the houses in my village are already destroyed.
