As Mumbai, India's financial capital, witnessed vertical growth over the years with highrises dotting its skyline, some 'gaothans' (villages) have held onto their heritage and legacy. Ranwar, in the heart of Bandra, is one such village that has resisted the urge to make way for towering structures. Dwarfed by highrises, the East Indian-majority village has narrow streets lined with old quaint bungalows and crosses outside homes. With jazz music streaming in the air, walking around the area can transport you to a simpler time. While Bandra developed rapidly and became home to Bollywood's elite and a burgeoning street shopping hub, residents of Ranwar maintained their old bungalows. The coexistence, however, has come at a price, causing traffic issues and crowding. And now, plans are afoot to give the 300-year-old village a facelift while preserving the past. Talking to PTI, <keyword id="23283968" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Johan-Dharmai" source="Orion">Johan Dharmai</keyword>, BJP secretary and a member of the East Indian community, said, "Locals want to preserve the heritage. One of the steps in the facelift plan is to close vehicle movement and build a walkway so that tourists can take a stroll and enjoy the architecture." Though many houses in Ranwar are now being redeveloped, Veronica Street has maintained its old-world charm. It has a square erected in 1866. However, honking rents the air on this street, as motorists see it as a shortcut to Bandra Reclamation and other areas. Mehboob Studio is just a stone's throw away, and senior citizens living on Veronica Street recall seeing actors Helen and Zeenat Aman around Ranwar. A beautification, restoration and conservation project is being initiated to improve safety, regulate traffic and create awareness about the centuries-old village. Mumbai BJP president and <keyword id="20238930" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bandra-West" source="keywords">Bandra West</keyword> MLA Ashish Shelar recently met locals to discuss ways to move the project forward. "The beauty of Bandra West is its 'gaothans'. The heritage needs to be protected and showcased. I have asked the government to allocate funds from the District Planning Development Committee (DPDC). <keyword id="23283965" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ranwar-Village" source="keywords">Ranwar village</keyword> will get a facelift. The work has begun on roads, CCTV cameras, street light illumination, parking and traffic plan will be in place with the help of locals and architects," Shelar told PTI. <keyword id="23283967" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Architect-Samir-DMonte" source="keywords">Architect Samir D'Monte</keyword> has been working with the Ranwar Veronica Street Residents' Association since 2009, and they identified a range of problems that the area faced. D'Monte said improvements were made to open spaces and common areas, roads, sewage and drainage systems, street signage, street lighting and traffic and parking management. Apart from this, individual houses were restored, and an innovative fire system was also introduced. Locals say most residents are senior citizens and want to live peacefully without disturbances by motorists. Kaevan Umrigar of Khaki Tours, who works to create awareness about Mumbai's heritage, said Bandra comprised 23 gaothans that housed fisher folk, Kunbis (a farming community) and the agris community who had salt pans. "Ranwar was a farming village, and the area had paddy fields. Later, these paddy fields made way for urban settlements. These little villages are now trapped in the city. Now, only 10 to 15 gaothans in Bandra have survived," he said. But preserving heritage comes at a cost, and if a 'gaothan' comes under heritage guidelines, it becomes difficult to upgrade a home in the area or live a modern life, Umigar said, adding that heritage should be made attractive by tapping the tourism potential of these areas. 'Gaothans' in Mumbai and the larger Mumbai metropolitan region (MMR) are urban villages that house the city's original inhabitants. The Mumbai suburban district collector and Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) have been roped in for Ranwar's facelift plan. Umigar calls land scarcity a threat to 'gaothans', with only 100 left in the city. "When someone wants to develop gaothans, they want to do it vertically. There is a constant battle between heritage and development. They (villages) survive because the houses are tightly packed and on narrow lanes. So individual houses are not attractive for redevelopment, and parking becomes an issue," he said.

300-year-old Bandra village to get facelift to conserve its glorious past

Indian Railways is going to start constructing the <keyword id="1025777" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mumbai-Ahmedabad">Mumbai-Ahmedabad</keyword> high-speed corridor by next year. This was confirmed by the Railway board member (traffic) <keyword id="3785607" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="mohammed-jamshed">Mohammed Jamshed</keyword>, during the chief commercial managers' conference in Mumbai. 
 
"Work on the hi-speed railway corridor will begin next year," he said. 
 Some issues involving acquisition of land still remains a hurdle. Railway administration wants a bullet train terminal to be built in <keyword id="3784325" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="bandra-kur">Bandra-Kur</keyword> la Complex (BKC), but the state government is offering a plot at <keyword id="6374610" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bandra-Reclamation">Bandra Reclamation</keyword>. The Railways are not keen on the Bandra Reclamation land and the Niti Aayog and the prime minister's office are expected to take the final call. 
 
The administration is planning to run its first bullet train by 2023 and it is expected to cover the the distance between between Mumbai and Ahmedabad in about two hours, running at a maximum speed of 350 kmph and operating speed of 320 kmph.

New Delhi, Mar 9 () The CBI carried out searches at seven locations on Monday in connection with the Yes Bank scam case pertaining to the Rs 600 crore alleged bribe to the family of its co-founder Rana Kapoor by DHFL, officials said.The CBI has named in the FIR five companies, seven individuals, including Kapoor's wife and three daughters, and unidentified people.Besides Rana Kapoor, the agency has booked his wife Bindu, daughters Roshini, Raakhe and Radha.Kapil Wadhawan, promoter of Dewan Housing Finance Corporation Limited (DHFL) and Dheeraj Rajesh Kumar Wadhawan, Director of RKW Developers Private Limited, a company linked to DHFL have also been named as accused, the officials said.Companies DHFL, RKW Developers Private Limited, DoIt Urban Ventures controlled by the Kapoor family, RAB Enterprises (lndia) Private Limited in which Bindu Rana Kapoor was director and Morgan Credits Private Ltd in which Rana Kapoor's daughters were directors are also named as accused.Teams of Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) officers are carrying out operations at the residence and official premises of the accused in Mumbai, they said.The agency has alleged that Kapoor, 62, entered into a criminal conspiracy with Kapil Wadhawan, DHFL director-promoter for round-tripping of funds where loans from Yes Bank to DHFL landed in companies owned by Rana Kapoor's daughters, DoIT Urban Ventures (India) Pvt Ltd, the officials said.The agency has alleged that between April and June, 2018, Yes Bank invested Rs 3,700 crore in short-term debentures of Dewan Housing Finance Corporation Ltd (DHFL), they said.Yes Bank also sanctioned a loan of Rs 750 crore to RKW Developers Pvt Ltd whose Director is Dheeraj Wadhawan and is a DHFL group company for their Bandra reclamation project, the officials said.The amount was transferred to by RKW Developers to DHFL without investing anything in the project for which it was sanctioned, they said.In return for these Yes Bank funds, Wadhawan allegedly invested Rs 600 crore in a company of Kapoor's daughters -- DoIt Urban Ventures (India) Pvt Ltd, which the CBI alleges to be a bribe to Kapoor for Yes Bank investments.DHFL is alleged to have had siphoned off Rs 31,000 crore out of total bank loans of Rs 97,000 crore using a web of multiple shell companies.The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on Thursday imposed a moratorium on the capital-starved Yes Bank, capping withdrawals at Rs 50,000 per account, and superseded the board of the private sector lender with immediate effect.Yes Bank will not be able to grant or renew any loan or advance, make any investment, incur any liability or agree to disburse any payment.As per the RBI's draft reconstruction scheme, State Bank of India will pick up 49 per cent stake in the crisis-ridden Yes Bank under a government-approved bailout plan. <ul><li><keyword id="7271887" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="dhfl-promoters">DHFL promoters</keyword> Kapil and Dheeraj Wadhawan have been taken into custody by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for their role in the <keyword id="8878575" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="yes-bank-scam">Yes Bank scam</keyword> case.</li><li>The brothers' trip to Mahabaleshwar was not in violation of the nationwide lockdown, but also the conditions of their bail.</li><li>An inquiry has also been initiated against Maharashtra's home department principal secretary Amitabh Gupta for giving the Wadhawans' permission to travel during the lockdown citing a 'family emergency'.</li></ul> The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has taken Diwan Housing Finance Limited (DHFL) promoters Kapil and Dheeraj Wadhawan into custody for their involvement Yes Bank scam case. "The Satara Police has extended to the CBI all required assistance and an escort vehicle with guards up to Mumbai on a written request. The arrest procedures are going on," said Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh. They were granted protection from arrest even though there was an FIR in their name registered under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). The two had been staying at a government guest house in Panchgani along with 21 other family members for violating lockdown rules, according Deshmukh. They had been placed under institutional quarantine at the location on April 9 after it was revealed that the family had travelled from the Khandala to the family’s farmhouse in Mahabaleshwar. Not only did the trip violate the nationwide lockdown but it was also in violation of their bail conditions, according to Poornima Kantharia, Maharashtra’s government pleader. DHFL’s Wadhawan brothers had filed for anticipatory bail which was opposed by the Enforcement Directorate (ED). Earlier this week the Maharashtra police requested the CBI to take the Wadhawan brothers into custody. "Upon the completion of their institutional quarantine period, the family has been shifted to their property in Mahabaleshwar till 6 May," said the senior official of Satara police. An inquiry has also been initiated against Maharashtra's home department principal secretary Amitabh Gupta for giving the Wadhawans' permission to travel during the lockdown citing a 'family emergency'. he is already under 'compulsory leave'. Gupta gave the family consent to travel in five vehicles. However, once they reached Mahabaleshwar it sparked a huge political row. DHFL’s involvement in the Yes Bank fraud case Yes Bank co-founder Rana Kapoor allegedly entered into a criminal conspiracy with <keyword id="152129" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kapil-Wadhawan">Kapil Wadhawan</keyword>, according to the CBI. The scheme was that loans from Yes Bank were authorised for DHFL but ended up in the hands of companies, which were owned by Kapoor’s daughters, like DoIt Urban Ventures. Between April and June 2018, the CBI believes that Yes Bank invested approximately ₹3,700 crore in short-term debentures of DHFL. In addition, the bank also sanctioned a loan of ₹750 crore to RKW Developers, a DHFL group company, which had the other Wadhawan brother — Dheeraj — listed as the director. That entire loan was transferred from RKW Developers to DHFL without investing anything in the Bandra reclamation project, for which it was sanctioned. DHFL has allegedly siphoned off ₹31,000 crore from loans worth ₹97,000 crore from Yes Bank using a web of multiple shell companies.
