These include University of Delhi, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur, Banaras Hindu University, and University of Hyderabad. "Orders have been issued to five public institutions including IIT-Madras, IIT-Kharagpur, DU and University of Hyderabad, declaring them as IoEs," National Herald<a href="https://www.nationalheraldindia.com/india/iit-madras-bhu-iit-kharagpur-delhi-university-hyderabad-university-declared-as-institutions-of-eminence"> reported </a>citing Union HRD Minister <keyword id="60487" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ramesh-Pokhriyal">Ramesh Pokhriyal</keyword> Nishank. The move came after the recommendation of the University Grants Commission (UGC) after the reports from Empowered Expert Committee (EEC). It recommended 15 public and private institutions each for the status of IoE. However, the scheme will extend to 10 public and 10 private institutions. <ul><li>Three premier Indian institutions raised concerns over lack of government funding. </li><li>Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT) Mumbai and Delhi campuses and the Indian Institute of Science (<keyword id="41780" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="IISC">IISc</keyword>) Bengaluru are amongst those who are unhappy with the IoE plans. </li><li>The Human Resource and Development Ministry (MHRD) recently awarded <keyword id="4396140" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="institute-of-eminence">Institute of Eminence</keyword> (IoE) tag to Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) Deemed to be University, Bhubaneswar.</li></ul>Three premier Indian institutions are unhappy with the slow release of <keyword id="92892" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="government-funds">government funds</keyword>. The issue came to the fore when Human Resource and Development Ministry (MHRD) awarded Institute of Eminence (IoE) tag to <a href="https://www.telegraphindia.com/states/west-bengal/global-goal-on-kiit-radar/cid/1719803">Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT)</a> in Bhubaneswar. But two institutes which were given the same recognition last July --Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT) Mumbai and Delhi and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bengaluru — say that the government has not yet provided enough funds to implement IoE plans. The IoE scheme plans to rope in 10 public and private institutions and enable them with better infrastructure, amenities, and autonomy. As per the scheme, the government was to infuse ₹1,000 crore over five years to public institutions. Private institutions are not eligible for government funding. <keyword id="57604" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="iit-delhi">IIT Delhi</keyword> had requested for ₹200 crore but received ₹93 crore, as on September 2019. <keyword id="71852" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIT-Mumbai">IIT Mumbai</keyword> received nearly ₹43 crore. On the other hand, IISc has received ₹78 crore against its demand for ₹167 crore in 2018. “There is a protocol for release of funds. The unused balance with the institute has to be reduced to 20% for further (fund) release,” HRD official <a href="https://indianexpress.com/article/education/three-institutes-iit-of-eminence-flag-slow-funding-govt-points-to-unspent-funds-6123451/">told</a> the Indian Express. The institutions have appealed for a regular inflow of funds to execute IoE scheme. “We cannot start a big project or activity if funds are released in piecemeal (manner). It’ll be much easier if funding is linked to an activity and not to fixed conventional heads under which the government usually releases funds,” the official added. The Yogi Adityanath government has decided to teach engineering courses at the <keyword id="50307" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Banaras-Hindu-University" source="Orion">Banaras Hindu University</keyword> (<keyword id="9367" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="BHU" source="Orion">BHU</keyword>) in Hindi as well from the next academic session. BHU will now be the first institute in the country to offer engineering courses in Hindi. This landmark decision is designed to remove the barrier of language in pursuing technical studies as well as boosting national pride among the youth of Uttar Pradesh. According to the government spokesman, initially, the option of Hindi will be restricted to the first year B-Tech students, but in the coming years it will be introduced at higher stages as well. All the necessary preparations have been made in this regard. A list of experts who can teach engineering in Hindi has been prepared. There is a provision to call experts from outside also to teach engineering courses in Hindi as per requirement. Meanwhile, the BHU is engaged in arranging Hindi books for first year B-Tech courses. Prof Pramod Kumar Jain, Director of IIT BHU and Chairman of Official Language Committee, has confirmed the introduction of engineering courses in Hindi for first year students. He said that the decision to launch engineering courses in Hindi along with English has been taken under the new <keyword id="117020" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="education-policy" source="Orion">Education Policy</keyword>, which has a provision for making mother tongue, the medium of instruction. Prof Jain said that use of regional languages will only expand the scope of engineering with talented youths from a cross section of society coming forward to pursue technical studies. It is worth noting that under the new Education Policy, the central government had announced last year, its plan to introduce engineering courses in Hindi at the <keyword id="55119" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="indian-institute-of-technology" source="Orion">Indian Institute of Technology</keyword> (IIT). Subsequently, the BHU started working on it, but had to shelve its plan due to the pandemic. A Bill to do away with UGC and AICTE will be tabled in the Parliament in October

Teams from <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=BITS+Pilani&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">BITS Pilani</a>, <keyword id="61708" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="IIT-Bombay">IIT Bombay</keyword> and <keyword id="3335295" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="IIT-Varanasi">IIT Varanasi</keyword> were the winners at the 2nd edition of '<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Ericsson+India&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Ericsson</a> Innovation Awards India' held at the IIT Delhi on Friday. <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Ericsson+India&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Ericsson India</a> offered the three winning teams financial support of Rs 13 lakhs each towards incubating them. 
 
The projects were submitted by students in areas such as web design, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=cloud+computing&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">cloud computing</a>, storage and networking, human-machine interface, embedded and hardware system design, MIMO (multiple-input, multiple-output), machine-to-machine/<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Internet+of+Things&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Internet of Things</a>, software-defined networking, open source, signal processing, graphics and visualization, as well as research. 
 
Each shortlisted proposal was given an incentive by <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Ericsson&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Ericsson</a> to complete the initial prototype within two months. The winning projects were selected by the Jury in front of an audience comprising of students, faculty, innovators and industry leaders. 
 
Here are the ideas that took the cake: 
 
<keyword id="6442381" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="BITS-Pilani">BITS Pilani</keyword>: This project was about using GAIT for human recognition. Its an alternative way to the currently established system based on face, fingerprint and iris and the students claim it can’t be spoofed or hacked. 
 
IIT Bombay: These students developed Li-Fi beacons. The product is basically a simple LED light source which can be connected to a receiver that can transmit dta in real time at a couple of GB/sec. 
 
IIT Varanasi: The IIT Varanasi team is working on a smart helmet which can be integrated with a two wheeler which - will keeps both the driver as well as the vehicle safe and secure by making it mandatory for the driver to put on the helmet and have a permissible alcohol breath level so as to be able to start the vehicle. 
 
<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Ericsson+India&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Ericsson</a> in association with the Foundation for Innovation and Technology Transfer (FITT) had organised this contest. It was kicked off in 2014 to promote innovation within engineering students at select IITs.
