A Bill to do away with UGC and AICTE will be tabled in the Parliament in October

(Eds: Updates with additional details ) New Delhi, Jun 11 () IIT Madras, IISc Bengaluru and IIT Delhi bagged the top three positions among the educational institutions in the country in the HRD Ministry's National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) rankings announced on Thursday. The top 10 higher education institutes in the country included seven Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). According to the fifth edition of the annual rankings, the top three universities are IISc Bengaluru, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) and Banaras Hindu University (BHU). IIM Ahmedabad has been ranked as the top business school in the country, followed by IIM Bangalore and IIM Calcutta. Union Human Resource Development (HRD) Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal "Nishank" announced that Miranda College bagged the top rank among colleges, followed by Lady Sri Ram College for Women, Hindu College and St Stephen's College -- all under the Delhi University (DU). According to the rankings, the top three engineering colleges in the country are IIT Madras, IIT Delhi and IIT Bombay. In the pharmacy category, the top institute is Delhi's Jamia Hamdard, followed by the Panjab University, Chandigarh and the National Institute of Pharmaceutical Research, Mohali. In the medical colleges category, AIIMS, Delhi bagged the top spot, followed by PGI, Chandigarh and CMC, Vellore. The annual rankings are usually announced in April but had to be postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. "These rankings act as a guide to students for selection of universities based on a set criteria and helps universities to improve their performance on various ranking parameters and identify gaps in research and areas of improvement. This exercise has also created a habit of organising data by the institutions and most of all, these institutions attempt to become more competitive," Nishank said. The HRD minister attributed the performance of Indian institutions in international rankings to the weightage given by them to the parameter of perception and reputation. "I do not agree to their parameters, be it the Times Higher Education Ranking or QS rankings, some of our very credible institutions have produced alumni who are spread across the globe, we are doing excellent research, we should be judged on those parameters," he said. The ranking framework evaluates institutions on five broad generic groups of parameters -- teaching, learning and resources (TLR), research and professional practice (RP), graduation outcomes (GO), outreach and inclusivity (OI) and perception (PR). The ranks are given on the basis of the sum total of marks assigned for each of these five broad groups of parameters. The dental colleges in the country were ranked for the first time by the NIRF. Maulana Azad Institute of Dental Sciences, Manipal College of Dental Sciences and DY Patil Vidyapeeth were ranked the top three institutes in this category. The top three institutions for architecture studies are IIT Kharagpur, IIT Roorkee and National Institute of Technology, Calicut. The top three law schools are -- National Law School of India University, Bengaluru; National Law University, New Delhi and Nalsar University of Law, Hyderabad. A total of 3,771 universities and higher educational institutions across the country participated in the ranking process. The QS World University Rankings were announced on Wednesday, in which two IITs -- Delhi and Bombay -- and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru maintained their positions in the top 200, despite losing some points. The QS rankings is the second consecutive international list where Indian universities have fared poorly compared to 2019. Sisodia also noted that the ‘next generation board’ will not be a replacement of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). The move aims to help students prepare for school and entrance examinations at the same time. The new board will have separate grades for all subjects, focussing on the career interest of the student. "You have four grades for subjects. For instance, divide science into four grades — science for doctors and engineers, science for sportsperson, science for humanities. If a child wants to become a journalist, he can take A grade language and maybe C grade of science so that if he has to cover science, he is well-versed with the basics," Sisodia explained. The move aims to provide a blended learning experience to students. As of now, the school curriculum helps them with only 10% of entrance examination syllabus, making them go for extra coaching classes. This comes on the back of massive opposition in the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/cbse-exam-registration-fee-hike-rolled-back/articleshow/70669606.cms">examination fee hikes</a> rolled out by CBSE. The board increased the exam registration fee for SC and ST students by 24 times, making it ₹1,200 from the existing ₹50. It also doubled the exam fee for class 10th and 12th students of general category to ₹1,500, which was ₹750. However, it rolled back the fee to ₹50 for the Scheduled Caste(SC)/ Scheduled Tribes (ST) students studying at government schools. The centre announced that the rest of the amount will be paid by the Delhi government. Delhi will get a new education board which will blend entrance exam prep with school syllabus

After <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=BJP+leader+Subramanian+Swamy+">BJP leader Subramanian Swamy</a> hoax, the HRD Ministry has finally initiated the process to appoint the next vice chancellor of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Jawaharlal+Nehru+University+%28JNU%29">Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU)</a>. It has constituted a search-cum-selection committee to be headed by the former vice chancellor of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Banaras+Hindu+University+%28BHU%29+">Banaras Hindu University (BHU)</a> Prof Dhirendra Pal Singh. 
 <keyword id="6370187" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Subramanian-Swamy">Subramanian Swamy</keyword> have already set the stage for appointment of the new <keyword id="6356383" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="JNU">JNU</keyword> vice chancellor, by claiming that he is an informal frontrunner for the post. 
 Last week, the ministry has constituted the committee under Prof <keyword id="174899" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="DP-Singh">DP Singh</keyword>, director at the National Assessment &amp; Accreditation Council. The two others on the committee are former <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/3-ISRO-achievements-that-made-Indians-proud/articleshow/48347077.cms">ISRO</a> chief K Radhakrishnan and former diplomat Ashok Sen. 
 
Radhakrishnan and Sen were appointed to the committee according to the recommendations of the JNUI Executive Committee and Prof DP Singh is the nominee of the visitor to the Central University— the President of India. 
 
The HRD ministry has also invited applications to the VC's post which will now be screened by this committee. After Subramanian Swamy hoax, HRD Ministry sets the ball rolling for new JNU VC

Teams from <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=BITS+Pilani&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">BITS Pilani</a>, <keyword id="61708" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="IIT-Bombay">IIT Bombay</keyword> and <keyword id="3335295" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="IIT-Varanasi">IIT Varanasi</keyword> were the winners at the 2nd edition of '<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Ericsson+India&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Ericsson</a> Innovation Awards India' held at the IIT Delhi on Friday. <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Ericsson+India&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Ericsson India</a> offered the three winning teams financial support of Rs 13 lakhs each towards incubating them. 
 
The projects were submitted by students in areas such as web design, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=cloud+computing&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">cloud computing</a>, storage and networking, human-machine interface, embedded and hardware system design, MIMO (multiple-input, multiple-output), machine-to-machine/<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Internet+of+Things&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Internet of Things</a>, software-defined networking, open source, signal processing, graphics and visualization, as well as research. 
 
Each shortlisted proposal was given an incentive by <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Ericsson&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Ericsson</a> to complete the initial prototype within two months. The winning projects were selected by the Jury in front of an audience comprising of students, faculty, innovators and industry leaders. 
 
Here are the ideas that took the cake: 
 
<keyword id="6442381" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="BITS-Pilani">BITS Pilani</keyword>: This project was about using GAIT for human recognition. Its an alternative way to the currently established system based on face, fingerprint and iris and the students claim it can’t be spoofed or hacked. 
 
IIT Bombay: These students developed Li-Fi beacons. The product is basically a simple LED light source which can be connected to a receiver that can transmit dta in real time at a couple of GB/sec. 
 
IIT Varanasi: The IIT Varanasi team is working on a smart helmet which can be integrated with a two wheeler which - will keeps both the driver as well as the vehicle safe and secure by making it mandatory for the driver to put on the helmet and have a permissible alcohol breath level so as to be able to start the vehicle. 
 
<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Ericsson+India&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Ericsson</a> in association with the Foundation for Innovation and Technology Transfer (FITT) had organised this contest. It was kicked off in 2014 to promote innovation within engineering students at select IITs. 
 
This year the Awards have been rolled out to IITs across Delhi, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Mumbai, Roorkee, Guwahati, Bhubaneswar, Mandi, Hyderabad as well as IISc Bangalore, BITS Pilani, IIIT Gwalior, IIIT Delhi, Banaras Hindu University (BHU) in Varanasi.

Edition of Ericsson Innovation Awards

The QS Asia University Rankings has found out that Indian Institute of Technology-Madras has made it to the top 50 universities in Asia this year by jumping 13 places from its position last year. It is now ranked 43. With this, four IITs – Kanpur, Madras, Bombay and Delhi are featured among the top ones in Asia. 
 
IIT-Kanpur gained 10 places to be ranked as the 48th university. Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bengaluru which remained India's best university with 33rd rank was closely followed by IIT-Bombay (35th rank) and IIT-Delhi (36th rank). If we go beyond the top 50, IIT-Kharagpur was placed 51st and two other IITs - Roorkee (78) and Guwahati (94) - made it to the top 100. 
 <keyword id="6360099" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Delhi-University">Delhi University</keyword> (DU), which had got 91st position last year, jumped several steps and was ranked 66th. University of Calcutta was ranked 108th, a big jump from 149th last year, University of Mumbai (145), while Banaras Hindu University was placed at 155th position. <keyword id="49466" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Panjab-University">Panjab University</keyword> featured in the 251 to 300 bracket. Overall, like last year, National University of Singapore (NUS) has been ranked the best university in Asia, followed by University of Hong Kong. 
 The QS report has clearly brought good news for IITs, especially for <keyword id="6356755" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIT-Madras">IIT Madras</keyword>. Bhaskar Ramamurthi, the Director of the institution said: "We are delighted to be listed in the top 50 Asian Universities. We have been focused on growing and improving our research, teaching and overall curriculum as part of our strategic plan 2020 and it appears to be paying off. We will persevere and do our best to move still further up in the Asian and global rankings in the coming years.” 
 
When asked what are the points IIT-Madras is losing out on, P Sriram, Dean of Administration, said: “It is in the perception scores (results of surveys), especially, the academic perception scores. We have to make IIT-Madras more visible internationally and make our research strengths visible in a widespread manner in order to enhance our academic reputation score.” 
 
With 23 universities in the top 350, India's performance was fifth best among the 17 countries featured in the list. National University of Singapore, University of Hong Kong and Nanyang Technological University took the top three spots in the rankings which evaluated 920 universities from Asia. 
 Notably, the rankings by British company <keyword id="990919" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Quacquarelli-Symonds">Quacquarelli Symonds</keyword> were expanded to include Asia's 350 best universities, an addition of 50 from last year. Methodological enhancements too were in place - staff with a PhD was included in the parameters. Academic reputation (30%), reputation among prospective employers (20%), faculty/student ratio (15%), citations per paper (10%), papers per faculty (10%), staff with a PhD (5%), proportion of international faculty (2.5%), proportion of international students (2.5%), proportion of inbound exchange students (2.5%) and proportion of outbound exchange students (2.5%) were the deciding factors for ranking the institutions.

With IIT Madras' entry this year, four IITs make their place among Asia's top 50 universities

It has never happened before. Pre-placement offers (PPOs) at the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) have increased by almost 50%. Even before the actual placement kick starts by the end of this year, most students have a job in hand. 
 
From 35 to 50, that’s precisely what IIT Madras had received in terms of PPOs. IIT Bombay has so far received 123 PPOs, exceeding the 110 it got all of last year. IIT Kanpur has received 90, which is 24 more than the tally by last September. IIT Kharagpur has seen a spurt of almost 55% in PPOs to 142 until now from 92 last year. Several investment banking and financial services companies are making a comeback to IIT campuses after a gap of two years or so. These include JP Morgan, Morgan Stanley and Barclays at Madras and Kharagpur. Other are making their debut, like Credit Suisse and Capital One at IIT Bombay. Ecommerce companies and startups remain the largest recruiters. 
 
PPOs are a key source of talent for Amazon India. "At Amazon we believe that interns are our future leaders," Raj Raghavan, director of human resources to ld The Economic Times. "More than 50% of our campus hiring comes through pre-placement offers and would continue to be one of the key areas of identifying and hiring talent." 
 
Over the last two years, the conversion of IIT interns to PPOs has seen an increase at Amazon. More than 60% of its IIT hiring now takes place through the PPO route. This year's top recruiters at the IITs through PPOs include Samsung India, Adobe, Microsoft, Reliance Industries, Tata Steel, Flipkart and Strand Life Sciences. 
 
Samsung India's IIT interns rose around 60% from last year. Most have got PPOs and are sto join. "We believe that internships give both the interns and the organisation an opportunity to interact with each other over an extended period of time," said a Samsung India spokesperson. "This makes it easier for students to decide once they have an offer, as well as assimilate into the organisation faster once they join." 
 
Companies visiting campuses to offer PPOs for the first time include Texas Instruments and JSW Group, American Express and Axsiom at IIT-BHU (Banaras Hindu University); Bentley Systems India, Fuzzy Logix, Innoplexus Consulting Services, Quetzal Online, Glow Homes Technologies and Zimply at IIT Roorkee; and JP Morgan at IIT Bombay, besides the Credit Suisse and Capital One cited earlier. Apart from these, there are the companies begun by old students.
