New Delhi, Apr 24 () The usage of artificial substances to polish the cricket ball, which effectively means ball tampering, could be considered for legalisation when the game resumes after the COVID-19 pandemic that has made bowlers wary of applying saliva on the red cherry.<p> 'ESPNCricinfo' reported that administrators are "open to the option of allowing for the use of an agreed artificial substance to polish the ball under the supervision of the umpires", which amounts to ball-tampering as per the current rules governing the sport.</p><p> The matter of saliva being unsafe was raised by the ICC's medical committee and it would be addressed before cricket resumes. All sports activities have come to a halt after the coronavirus outbreak. </p><p> Shining the ball is an integral part of Test cricket as it helps the bowlers swing the ball, both conventional and reverse.</p><p> If the move gets the go ahead, it would be quite ironic for the game's administrators after the 2018 ball-tampering controversy which led to one-year bans on Steve Smith and David Warner for conspiring to use sandpaper to alter the ball.</p><p> Following the chief executives meeting of the ICC on Thursday, its medical committee, headed by Peter Harcourt, had issued an update.</p><p> "Our next step is to create a roadmap for the resumption of international cricket which will include a criteria for decision making and a checklist for what needs to happen. </p><p> "This will consider everything from player preparation to government restrictions and advisories and bio-bubbles. The scale and complexity of getting cricket started again cannot be underestimated particularly with respect to a global event," Harcourt said.</p><p> Australian pacer Josh Hazlewood recently said that Test cricket will become harder if the bowlers did not have enough means to move the ball.</p><p> "I think the white ball would be fine, (but) Test cricket would be very hard. Bowlers rely on any sort of sideways movement in the air," said Hazlewood.</p><p> "If you didn't maintain the ball at all for 80 overs it would be quite easy to bat after that initial shine has gone. Whether you use saliva or sweat, maybe one person can do it. </p><p> Former India pacer Venkatesh Prasad supports the idea of not using saliva on the ball.</p><p> "When the action resumes, they should use only sweat for some time as safety of the players is paramount," former pacer Prasad, who played 33 Tests and 161 ODIs for India, told .</p><p>However, he reckons it will be tough for the bowlers to stop all of a sudden.</p><p> "When you are in the thick of things, you tend to forget it. You have to get the upper hand over the batsmen as you can't use anything else besides sweat and saliva.</p> "The question is what do you do when the batsman is pulping you? You need to swing the ball and what helps swing the ball is the aerodynamics," the 50-year-old explained.  BS PM   PM

Melbourne, May 5 () Australian spin legend Shane Warne has offered a unique answer to the question of how to swing the ball without using saliva or resorting to tampering in a post COVID-19 world -- make one side of it heavier to ensure that it doesn't need any shining.<p> Warne feels it can help fast bowlers generate swing even on flat wickets and permanently eradicate ball-tampering.</p><p> "Why can't the ball be weighted on one side so it always swings? It would be like a taped tennis ball or like with the lawn bowls," Warne told the Sky Sports Cricket Podcast.</p><p> There is speculation that the use of saliva to shine the ball will be stopped to cut down the risk of the highly contagious.</p><p>Responding to the extraordinary situation, Australian manufacturer Kookaburra has started developing a wax applicator -- which could be ready in a month -- as an alternative to saliva and sweat to help bowlers shine cricket balls in the post COVID-19 world.</p><p> "I'm not sure you'd want it to hoop around corners like Wasim (Akram) and Waqar (Younis) but it could swing and give the seamer something on flat wickets when it's hot and the pitch is at its flattest on day two, day three," Warne said.</p><p> "It would actually be a really good way to move forward, as you know no one needs to do anything to the ball.</p><p> "You wouldn't have to worry about anyone tampering with it with bottle tops, sandpaper, or whatever. It would be a good competition between bat and ball," he added.</p><p> The iconic spinner said while bats have become bigger and lighter, the ball has not evolved over the years and his suggestion can bring about a balance.</p><p>"Have a look at how the bats have evolved. If you pick up one of the bats you started with in the 80s, and then one you used at the end of your career, it's like four of your old ones stuck together - but the thing is lighter!</p>"So why has the ball not evolved? <p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p>The NFL and NFLPA were <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/why-nfl-is-trying-to-punish-tom-brady-for-deflategate-2016-3">back in court Thursday for an appeal hearing over "Deflategate</a>."</p><p>Deflategate was the scandal that rocked the NFL world, when after the 2015 AFC Championship between the Patriots and the Colts, it was revealed that several of the Patriots' footballs were under-inflated.</p><p>After Judge Richard Berman overruled the NFL's four-game suspension for Tom Brady for Deflategate, the NFL immediately filed an appeal, which was shelved until after the season.</p><p>On Thursday, the&#xa0;NFL was trying to get a favorable ruling that Commissioner Roger Goodell was within his right to punish Brady and the Patriots for conduct "detrimental" to the game.</p><p><a href="https://twitter.com/BenVolin/with_replies">And according to The Boston Globe's Ben Volin</a>, Tom Brady might be in trouble.</p><p>When the hearing was over, Volin tweeted a string of updates on the case. They didn't sound good for Brady:</p><p><div></div></p><p class="embed-spacer"><div></div></p><p class="embed-spacer"><div></div></p><p class="embed-spacer"><div></div></p><p class="embed-spacer">Brady and Roger Goodell were not expected to be in attendance for the meeting, but it doesn't seem as if Jeffrey Kessler, the NFLPA's lawyer, will have good news to give Brady.</p><p class="embed-spacer">The NFL is not just trying to suspend Brady, but they're also trying to set a precedent with this hearing.</p><p class="embed-spacer">The league's image took a hit when it was beaten in court&#xa0;by Brady over the summer. So, regardless of costs, the NFL is trying to protect its image. Losing to Brady not only casts doubt on Goodell's power to punish players, but it also could encourage other players to fight their own punishments after seeing Brady win in a court case.</p><p class="embed-spacer"><a href="http://www.bostonglobe.com/2016/03/03/tom-brady-deflategate-appeal/TnrgVNVYDpa6n4VtBBJr2I/story.html">According to Volin</a>, a two-thirds vote is needed for either side to win the appeal.</p><p class="embed-spacer">If the NFL once again loses, they could file for another appeal, which would reportedly go to the US Supreme Court. Report: Tom Brady got 'hammered' in the Deflategate appeal hearing, and he might be in trouble

<p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>The NFL and NFL Players Association had its second settlement hearing in court on Wednesday, and it sounds like it went horribly for the NFL.<p>Since the NFLPA took the NFL to court over Tom Brady's four-game suspension, the two sides haven't made any progress on a settlement.</p><p>While Judge Richard Berman, who is overseeing the case, can't force either side to come to a settlement, he can push in one direction to encourage a settlement, <a href="http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2015/08/11/judge-berman-tells-nfl-nflpa-to-keep-talking-about-a-potential-settlement/">perhaps hinting that he favors one side's argument</a>.</p><p>Based on the reports from Wednesday's hearing, it sounds like Berman may be pushing the NFL to come to a settlement.</p><p>Berman was apparently very critical of the NFL's argument:</p><p><div></div></p><p class="embed-spacer"><div></div></p><p>Berman was reportedly critical of the Wells Report saying Brady was "generally aware" as a way for the NFL to argue&#xa0;Brady was part of the scheme.</p><p class="embed-spacer"><div></div></p><p class="embed-spacer">Berman also questioned why the Wells Report didn't specifically mention January 18, the day of the AFC Championship game against the Colts, when referees found the balls were deflated under regulation:</p><p class="embed-spacer"><div></div></p><p>Though, in fairness, the NFL had a good counterargument:</p><p class="embed-spacer"><div></div></p><p class="embed-spacer">As has been commonly argued against the NFL, Berman was curious as to how and why the NFL chose a four-game suspension for Brady:</p><p class="embed-spacer"><div></div></p><p class="embed-spacer"><div></div></p><p class="embed-spacer"><div></div></p><p>When league lawyer Daniel Nash said he would defer to Roger Goodell on that, saying Goodell weighed all evidence and made a decision, Berman responded:</p><p class="embed-spacer"><div></div></p><p>Berman was also unhappy with Goodell comparing the situation to a player being on steroids:</p><p class="embed-spacer"><div></div></p><p class="embed-spacer"><div></div></p><p>Berman ultimately didn't side too heavily with Brady, however:</p><p class="embed-spacer"><div></div></p><p>As <a href="https://twitter.com/adbrandt/status/634048387395026944">Andrew Brandt mentioned</a>, this could be Berman's way of pushing the NFL closer to a settlement.
