Mumbai, Former Lok Sabha Speaker and ex-Maharashtra Chief Minister Manohar G. <keyword id="19952829" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="joshi" source="keywords">Joshi</keyword>, a senior <keyword id="19905334" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="shiv-sena" source="keywords">Shiv Sena</keyword> (UBT) leader, passed away following a heart attack early on Friday morning. "Our family is deeply saddened to inform you that <keyword id="20281058" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="manohar-joshi" source="keywords">Manohar Joshi</keyword> passed away today morning at 3 a.m. following prolonged age related health issues," his family said in a terse announcement at dawn. Joshi, 86, was rushed to the Hinduja Hospital in Mahim after suffering a heart attack late on Thursday. 'Sir', as he was popular in political circles because of his teaching background and a stern demeanour, succumbed during treatment around 3 a.m., plunging the state political fraternity into gloom. His family said that Joshi's mortal remains will be kept at their home in Matunga to enable people to pay their last respects from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m., and then taken in a procession for the funeral at Dadar Crematorium around 3 p.m. One of the closest confidantes of the late Shiv Sena founder Balasaheb Thackeray, Joshi had over six decades in politics starting as a Municipal Corporator, then Mayor, Maharashtra CM, Union Minister, then crowning glory as the Speaker of Lok Sabha. Joshi had been suffering from certain old-age related ailments for the past several months and largely kept out of public glare, but remained with the SS-UBT, till he breathed his last. Top leaders across the political spectrum have paid rich tributes to Joshi who headed the first-ever saffron government in the state comprising the undivided Shiv Sena-Bharatiya Janata Party (1995-1999), in an era when politics was more principled and less unscrupulous. Prime Minister <keyword id="19895781" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="narendra-modi" source="keywords">Narendra Modi</keyword> condoled the demise of the veteran leader. "Pained by the passing away of Shri Manohar Joshi Ji. He was a veteran leader who spent years in public service and held various responsibilities at the municipal, state and national level. As Maharashtra CM, he worked tirelessly for the state's progress. He also made noteworthy contributions as a Union Minister. During his tenure as the Lok Sabha Speaker, he strove to make our Parliamentary processes more vibrant and participative. Manohar Joshi Ji will also be remembered for his diligence as a legislator, having had the honour of serving in all four legislatures. Condolences to his family and supporters. Om Shanti." Maharashtra Governor Ramesh Bais, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, Deputy CMs Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, mourned the demise of Joshi and recalled his services to the state and country. Shiv Sena (UBT) President and ex-CM <keyword id="19905331" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="uddhav-thackeray" source="keywords">Uddhav Thackeray</keyword>, who is in Buldhana, cut short his political tour to rush to Mumbai to pay his respects to Joshi. Top SS-UBT leaders, including Leader of Opposition Ambadas Danve, Aditya Thackeray, Sanjay Raut, Arvind Sawant, Sushma Andhare, Kishore Tiwari, and others paid rich tributes to Joshi, and remembered his contributions at various levels in public life. State and Central Bharatiya Janata Party leaders, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena Chief Raj Thackeray, leaders of Maha Vikas Aghadi and other parties also condoled the demise of Joshi.

As many as 18 nurses and medical staff from civic-run <keyword id="4320864" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Balasaheb-Thackeray-hospital">Balasaheb Thackeray Hospital</keyword> in Jogeshwari on Wednesday staged a protest demanding protective gear to attend to COVID-19 <keyword id="6364395" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="patients">patients</keyword> admitted at the facility. The protesting medical staff from Balasaheb <keyword id="41515" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Thackeray">Thackeray</keyword> Hospital signed a letter addressed to the <keyword id="53938" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Brihanmumbai-Municipal-Corporation">Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation</keyword>'s medical officer. The hospital was converted into a COVID-19 facility, for treating positive patients and suspected cases, the letter stated. "Despite the guidelines, we have not been provided the required kits for our own safety while serving patients. If any one of us suffers from the infection, the BMC would be solely responsible for it," the nurses have stated in the letter. <keyword id="13126" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Maharashtra">Maharashtra</keyword> on Tuesday recorded 23 new Covid-19 cases, with the total jumping from 868 to 891, besides a total of 52 deaths till Monday, including a 30-year-old pregnant woman, officials said here. On Tuesday, 10 fresh cases were reported from Mumbai, Pune had 4 new cases, Ahmednagar 3, Nagpur and Buldhana two each, and one each from Sangli and Thane this morning. The increased figures came a day after aA huge health scare with a tea-seller testing positive from Bandra, near 'Matoshri' - the residence of Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, and two major private hospitals, one in Mumbai and one in Pune being sealed after around 130 staffers were found Covid-19 positive. The tea-seller, who was in business till March 22, has been admitted to the Hinduhridaysamrat Balasaheb Thackeray Medical College &amp; R.N. Cooper Hospital in Juhu, and efforts are on to trace his contacts even as Kala Nagar - the area around 'Matoshri' has been sealed. Maharashtra Coronavirus tally rises to 891 after 23 new cases detected

At the current speed at which COVID-19 is spreading in the country, India is at the threshold of a major medical calamity within a month, and the country must implement a 'Janata Curfew' for at least two weeks, warns a leading microbiologist. "We feel if asocial distancing' is not implemented seriously, by end-April hospitals may be full of patients and the situation could be totally unmanageable," a concerned A.M. Deshmukh, President of <keyword id="8947210" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="microbiologists-society">Microbiologists Society</keyword>, India (MSI), told IANS. Expressing worries over the manner in which people are blatantly flouting norms of asocial distancing' and continue to crowd in open, Deshmukh said this poses a huge risk of spreading the virus by 'contact'. The MSI has shot off a memorandum to Prime Minister Narendra Modi demanding that in view of this, the 'Janata Curfew' of March 22 must be extended and continued for at least another 14 days to effectively check the spread of the <keyword id="1754604" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="coronavirus">coronavirus</keyword>. The MSI statement came even as Modi and Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, Nationalist Congress Party President Sharad Pawar and Congress state President Balasaheb Thorat expressed distress over the hordes which trooped out after yesterday's 'Janata Curfew' in Mumbai on Monday (March 23). The crowds thronged despite statewide near-total lockdown implemented since midnight of March 22-23 till March 31 by Thackeray, along with prohibitory orders right up to Nagar Panchayat jurisdictions. Deshmukh explains that the COVID-19 has an incubation period of 14 days after which the patient tests either negative or positive, but if infected (positive) he/she will be hospitalized, like in China, Italy, Iran, Germany, Spain, Portugal, US, UK, etc. "We are confident that by implementing 'Janata Curfew' for another 14 days will control the outbreak and we will succeed to bring the outbreak in reverse direction," said the MSI plea to the PM. Referring to global statistics that COVID-19 commands upto 2 per cent death rate, Deshmukh pointed out that if the WHO-declared pandemic is not controlled immediately, then in the next quarter, everyone in this country could be a potential infectee. Deshmukh said any major spread could be catastrophic for India's 125-crore population, though the silver lining is the ensuing heat of summer may have an adverse impact on the coronavirus. "Moreover, India has severe limitations in the health-care sector, like shortages of beds, ventilators, medical and para-medical staff, etc, so even a miniscule percentage of the affected population poses a monumental challenge," Deshmukh said. He admits that such a long period of 'Janata Curfew' would play havoc with the poor, daily wage-earners, senior or single citizens, the sick or handicapped, especially in the big cities. "They are the responsibility of the government and society... The government and society must take proper care of such persons by ensuring they get proper meals and other life essentials. It is for the larger good of the government and people, so they can do this much for this helpless class," Deshmukh urged. With around 350 members, the Maharashtra-based MSI was founded in 1996 as an apex body of microbiologists and works in different spheres including environment, agriculture and academic.
