Indian companies across multiple sectors have reported disappointing results in the second quarter of fiscal year 2025, notes a new JM Financials report. Consequently, their poor performance has triggered stock price corrections for affected companies. The brunt of this weaker than expected earnings was largely borne by consumer centric sectors like FMCG (fast moving consumer goods), retail, and auto, which slacked largely due to dampened urban demand. For instance, India's largest automaker, Maruti Suzuki, reported a 5% YoY decline in its total domestic passenger vehicle wholesales, largely on the back of pent-up inventory. Similarly, Honda reported a staggering 23% YoY dip in its total sales during October 2024. A recent report by Bernstein noted that around 48% of the companies listed on the NSE100 index missed their earnings estimate for Q2FY25, the highest since March 2020. Most companies have mentioned deteriorated domestic demand, urban slowing, macroeconomic risk, and margin pressures as the main reasons behind the dip. "The quarter's earnings have made investors nervous," noted the JM Financials report. The challenging environment stems from multiple factors: softening consumer demand, rising input costs, and companies' limited ability to increase prices. Moreover, this is not limited to just one quarter. Companies have been reporting weak, single-digit earnings growth for the last six consecutive quarters. Data from India Data Hub also suggests that corporate profits of listed companies plunged by as much as 3.4% during the quarter ended September 30, 2024. This is in stark contrast to the year-ago period, where they had shot up by over 40% The oil and gas sector had a difficult quarter, with refiners hit by weak margins and city gas distributors struggling with higher input costs. Financial institutions showed mixed results. While government-owned banks reported strong numbers, microfinance institutions and some private lenders faced massive difficulties with their unsecured loans. Most notable amongst this was the case of IndusInd Bank, which saw its net profits dip by 40% amidst burgeoning provisions, which climbed 87% to Rs 1,820 crore in Q2, as against Rs 974 crore reported in the year-ago period. <h2>Markets head southwards</h2>The selling trend by FPIs has dragged down the major Indian indices, the Nifty 50 and Sensex, both of which have dropped by around 8% since the beginning of this selling spree in October. According to National Securities Depository Ltd. (NSDL) data, FPIs offloaded equities worth a significant Rs 19,994 crore in just the first five trading sessions of November last week. The impact is clearly visible on Indian stock markets. Data suggests that while every sector in October closed the month in red, auto, oil and gas, and consumer durables were the most badly hit, each declining by as much as 10% during the month. Another indicator underlining the inherent weakness of the market was that the month saw only 242 stocks hit their 52-week high, significantly below the usual monthly average of 310.

Notably, this was the worst weekly run experienced by the markets over the last 14 months. Clearly, the markets are not in the mood to embrace the impending festivities. Only 12 out of 50 stocks on the Nifty50 advanced today, while the other 38 declined. It was no different on the BSE, where an astounding 3,101 stocks slipped during the day, while just 841 inched up. Smallcaps bore the biggest brunt of this drawdown, with the smallcap 100, 50, 250, and microcaps each sliding by over 2% during the day. Amidst sectors, media, metal, PSU banks, consumer durables, and oil and gas skidded over 2% each today. Gaurav Garg, Research Analyst at Lemonn Markets Desk, explains that on a weekly basis, benchmarks had recorded five consecutive daily losses. Markets appear oversold, with RSI (Relative Strength Index) falling to 27 levels, its lowest in more than a year. Persistent foreign outflows with a record ~97000 crores so far in October, along with disappointing <keyword id="23378466" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Q2-earnings" source="keywords">Q2 earnings</keyword>, have led to sharp valuation corrections in stocks with high multiples as investors adjust their expectations for future growth. Per media reports, investors saw their wealth diminish by a massive Rs 6.80 lakh crore today, largely due to a sharp, 18% dip in the shares of <keyword id="19901053" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="IndusInd-Bank" source="keywords">IndusInd Bank</keyword> and uncontrolled exodus of <keyword id="19900795" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="foreign-investors" source="keywords">foreign investors</keyword>. Reportedly, IndusInd Bank reported a 40% decline in its net profits for the quarter ended September 30, 2024. "Another major factor contributing to this dip is disappointing earnings reports from Indian companies, especially in the consumption sector, which signal an economic slowdown, particularly in urban consumption," Santosh Meena, Head of Research at Swastika Investmart, said. Mahindra &amp; Mahindra, Larsen &amp; Toubro, NTPC, Adani Ports, Tata Steel, Maruti, Bajaj Finance and Titan were also among the laggards. "Markets continued its downward trajectory as a broader selloff pulled down key benchmarks with Sensex ending below the crucial 80k mark. The dismal Q2 earnings so far has aggravated the investors' woes while persistent <keyword id="21360658" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="FII-selling" source="keywords">FII selling</keyword> continued to create havoc in the market," said Prashanth Tapse, Senior VP (Research), Mehta Equities Ltd. On October 24, 2024, i.e. yesterday, foreign investors offloaded a massive Rs 5,062.45 worth of equities, while domestic investors remained net buyers, purchasing around Rs 3,620.47 crore worth of shares. Thus far in October, foreign investors have pulled out a record Rs 97,205.42 crore from Indian markets. Shrikant Chouhan, Head Equity Research, Kotak Securities expects that the "market sentiment will continue to be weighed down by weaker-than-expected Q2FY25 earnings prints and continued weak commentary. FPI flows are expected to remain volatile in the days to come". "Indian equity markets corrected sharply this week as FII continued with selling in Indian markets. Benchmark indices (Nifty 50 and Sensex 30) declined between 2-3% this week. The midcap and the <keyword id="20187540" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="smallcap-stocks" source="keywords">smallcap stocks</keyword> witnessed selling pressure. As a result, the BSE Midcap and the BSE Smallcap indices underperformed the larger peers and were down between 5-8% on a weekly basis. The company's net profits surged 19.5% on a year-on-year (YoY) basis to touch Rs 1,988 crore, while its earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (<keyword id="19957744" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="EBITDA" source="keywords">EBITDA</keyword>) inched up by 24% YoY to reach Rs 2,415 crore. The company also reported healthy sales and export figures for the quarter ended June 30, 2024. The automaker's exports jumped 7% YoY to 4,11,435 units in the previous quarter, as opposed to 3,85,851 units in the same quarter last year. The company's sales also saw a 7% YoY jump from 11,02,056 units in the June quarter, compared to 10,27,407 units in the same quarter last year. The company's most popular motorcycle, <keyword id="20050188" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Pulsar" source="keywords">Pulsar</keyword>, saw 3x growth over its other industry peers among all sports motorcycles. That should soothe fears about further price cuts and convince investors that better days are ahead, Ives said. Electric two-wheeler sales declined in August 2024, but year-on-year growth continues

<keyword id="6359783" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="bajaj-auto" source="Orion">Bajaj Auto</keyword> said its consolidated net profit increased 17.51% to Rs 2,020 crore for the September quarter with robust domestic performance driving record revenue. The Pune-based company had reported a consolidated net profit of Rs 1,719 crore in the year-ago period. Total income increased to Rs 11,207 crore for the second quarter of the current fiscal from Rs 10,537 crore a year ago, Bajaj Auto said in a regulatory filing. Bajaj Auto said its revenue from operations registered a new high of Rs 10,777 crore, up 6% year-on-year (YoY). In terms of volume, Bajaj said it sold a total of 10,53,953 units in the quarter under review, down 8% from 11,51,012 units in the year-ago period. Two-wheeler sales in the domestic market were down 19% to 5,05,320 units in Q2 as compared to 6,21,134 units in the year-ago period, while exports were at 3,76,263 units as against 3,97,900 units last year, down 5%. Total three-wheeler sales were at 1,72,370 units in the quarter under review as against 1,31,978 units in the corresponding period a year ago, up 31%. In the domestic market, the company said it clocked its highest-ever quarterly sales at 1,32,236 units as against 73,241 units last year, registering an increase of 81%. Addressing reporters in a virtual earnings call, Bajaj Auto Executive Director Rakesh Sharma said the company has been able to deliver "record breaking" performance in the midst of difficult international trading conditions. He said the drop in volumes of two-wheelers was due to the high base effect of the corresponding period last fiscal. Led by strong performance in the 125cc and above motorcycle segment, Sharma said Bajaj Auto has been able to increase its market share, which, along with better product mix, resulted in better revenue realisation. The domestic business registered a new peak, on the back of six successive quarters of double-digit growth, he added. On the company's electric two-wheeler brand <keyword id="409918" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="chetak" source="Orion">Chetak</keyword>, Sharma said after sorting out supply chain issues since March-April this year, Bajaj Auto has been able to increase its market share in the electric two-wheeler segment to 11% in Q2, up from 3% in FY23. The portfolio of the brand would also be expanded, he said, adding that the sales network of Chetak is present in 120 cities as against 90 in the previous quarter. Asked about the penetration of electric two-wheelers, he said it is at around 5% of the overall two-wheeler industry and in the September quarter, it has been "stuck" at monthly sales of about 65,000 units due to increase in prices after the reduction in FAME II subsidy. It has led to consolidation with the top-five players commanding 75% of the market as compared to 50% earlier and the bottom players have been weakened and severely hit. Sharma said one needs to wait and see how electric two-wheelers will grow in future as it will depend on the continuation or changes in the FAME scheme. Commenting on the performance of premium bike <keyword id="52525" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="triumph" source="Orion">Triumph</keyword>, he said it has been received extremely well in the market with the model clocking 8,000 units in the first one and half months of deliveries since August. Bajaj Auto will increase monthly production of the model to 10,000 units by the fourth quarter of FY24, up from 7,000 units currently. The company is also planning to start exports of Triumph bikes in the third quarter, while work on taking the brand experience to over 100 cities by the year end is on track from 26 currently, he added. Asked about the company's new launches, Sharma said there will be six upgrades and new launches in the 125 cc and above segment in the next four to five months starting after Diwali. On exports, he said a slow and steady recovery is expected considering the current global geopolitical situation and the difficulties in the financial system. Bajaj Auto said it sustained strong cash generation by adding over Rs 3,600 crore of free cash flow in the first half of the current fiscal. Shares of the company ended marginally up at 5,143.80 apiece on the BSE on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, IT services company HCL Tech on Friday posted a 20.4 per cent rise in consolidated net profit to Rs 4,257 crore for the June-ended quarter and gave a revenue growth guidance of 3-5 per cent for FY25 on GenAI diversification and strong operational execution. "On Monday, markets will react to India's inflation data. Key results this week include Jio Financial Services, HDFC Life, Asian Paints, LTIMindtree, Infosys, Wipro, JSW Steel, Paytm, etc. Also globally, investors will take cues from China's GDP numbers, US core retail sales data, and ECB (European Central Bank) interest rate decision," Siddhartha Khemka, Head, Retail Research, Motilal Oswal Financial Services Ltd, said. In the week ahead, economic data like China GDP, EuroZone CPI inflation, ECB policy, and the US Fed chair speech will be watched by investors to get cues on market momentum, Nair added. On a weekly basis, the BSE benchmark jumped 522.74 points, or 0.65 per cent, while the Nifty climbed 178.3 points, or 0.73 per cent. Bajaj Finserv Q2 net profit rises 24%, revenue up 25%

The company had posted a net profit of Rs 2,061.5 crore in the second quarter of FY23, Maruti Suzuki India said in a statement. The car maker also said that it recorded its highest-ever quarterly sale volume, net sales and net profit in this quarter. During the quarter under review, the company registered net sales of Rs 35,535.1 crore, against Rs 28,543.50 crore recorded in the same quarter of the previous fiscal, owing to higher sales volume and product mix, it said. The company sold 5,52,055 vehicles during the quarter as compared to 5,17,395 units in the second quarter of last year. Of the 5,52,055 vehicles sold in the July-September period this year, 4,82,731 units were sold in the domestic market while the remaining 69,324 cars were exported, the company said The EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation) margin for the quarter stood at 12.9%. On a year-on-year basis, EBITDA rose nearly 73%, margin expanding by 360 basis points. Raw material costs as a percentage of sales fell 300 basis points from last year to 73.5% from 76.5%.

Maruti Suzuki Q2 profit jumps over 80% on highest-ever sales

The company had posted a net profit of Rs 62 crore in the July-September period a year ago, according to a regulatory filing. Its net sales declined 3.76 per cent to Rs 1,107.40 crore in the second quarter of the current fiscal as against Rs 1,150.77 crore in the year-ago period. "The company has achieved a stable performance amidst a weak consumer demand sentiment," its chairman Shekhar Bajaj said in an earnings statement. Bajaj Electricals' total expenses in the September quarter rose 1.2 per cent to Rs 1,097.11 crore. Its revenue from consumer products fell 2.86 per cent to Rs 857.57 crore as against Rs 882.87 crore in the corresponding quarter in the preceding fiscal year. Similarly, revenue from the lighting solutions segment declined 7.42 per cent to Rs 255.25 crore in comparison to Rs 275.73 crore a year ago. "Consumer Products and Lighting Solutions revenues have contracted by 2.9 per cent and 7.4 per cent, respectively, for the quarter, due to demand slowdown and pricing constraints," the company said. For the September quarter, the company's total revenue from operations, which includes other operating income, stood at Rs 1,112.82 crore, down 3.95 per cent. Its total income in the reported quarter fell 1.81 per cent to Rs 1,142.26 crore. "Meanwhile, we continue to monitor the demand and continue to focus on our long-term strategic objectives with a continued push on new products and brand strengthening," the chairman said. The order book of Bajaj Electricals' was Rs 144 crore as of July 1, 2023, for Professional Lighting Projects. The EPC (Engineering Procurement &amp; Construction) segment has been demerged from September 1, 2023, and has a positive outlook for the future. Public sector banks are expected to see healthy growth as well but will be at their lowest in 8-10 quarters, forecasts Motilal. Equirus also sees NBFC and private sector earnings growth in double digits. “4QFY24 is expected to have 16% loan growth driven by retail and business banking. Sequentially, net interest margin (NIM) will compress for most banks due to the upward repricing of deposits. Among NBFC, Gold, Diversified and microfinance institutions (MFIs) to report strong growth,” says a report by Equirus. The most watched tech sector, however, is expected to continue with its weak revenue growth performance, hit by furloughs and a cut in discretionary spending. It also falls under the theme of global cyclicals impact. Most of the companies in the sector’s earnings growth has been stagnant for the last six quarters. “Sluggish performance from top-6 large caps continues with -1.2% to 1.3% QoQ growth in CC terms along with a flattish margin. MidCap IT to outperform large peers with QoQ sales growth of 2.4% against 0.3% for large caps,” says Equirus. sluggish growth in FY24 due to a much-delayed uptick in rural consumption. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/corporates/news/caught-between-devil-and-deep-sea-fmcg-majors-are-losing-both-mass-and-premium-consumers/articleshow/108960816.cms">Competition from smaller players</a> has also been eating into top companies’ sales in select staples, leading them towards price cuts. “Steady growth in urban markets, soft demand trend in rural markets, further moderation in pricing growth and a YoY margin expansion off a weak base would be the key trends for the staple companies,” says Equirus. Going ahead, however, FMCG players could see a better year, believes Motilal Oswal. “FY24 was an interim phase when price cuts and consumer offers impacted revenue growth, while volume recovery lagged (around 12-15 months). We believe volume growth has bottomed out and expect a better print in FY25,” it adds. The retail sector might also see some improvement due to the wedding and festival season. “Demand is expected to remain subdued in the retail space as January was soft and February was slightly better, benefiting from the wedding season and partly from the extended winter season. Metros/Tier 1 cities/towns continue to outperform Tier 2/Tier 3 cities,” says Motilal Oswal. But, overall trends remain weak especially if compared on a year-on-year basis. Added to that, many companies have been expanding their store footprints. “Continued weakness in demand trends to result in muted performance for most apparel &amp; footwear players, though network addition &amp; low base of last year to make revenue numbers optically higher,” opines Equirus. On an overall basis, the key commentary from companies that investors would watch include demand trends for the coming year. The key ponderables by investors in FY25 would be political continuity in the upcoming election season, consumption trends, as well as the pace of institutional inflows into equity. Earning forecasts for Q4 FY24: Healthcare and cement companies to shine

Mumbai, <keyword id="19897354" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="bajaj-auto" source="keywords">Bajaj Auto</keyword> has toppled Mahindra &amp; Mahindra (M&amp;M) as the third most valued auto company in the country. Bajaj Auto's market cap on Thursday crossed the Rs 2 lakh crore-mark to touch Rs 2.04 lakh crore, surpassing M&amp;M. Maruti <keyword id="20032993" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="suzuki" source="keywords">Suzuki</keyword> has a market cap of Rs 3.13 lakh crore, while <keyword id="19906967" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tata-motors" source="keywords">Tata Motors</keyword> mcap is Rs 2.59 lakh crore. Bajaj Auto stock gained 5.3 per cent to close at Rs 7,596 on Thursday. <keyword id="20332980" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="arun-agarwal" source="keywords">Arun Agarwal</keyword>, Vice-President &amp; Automobile Analyst, <keyword id="19958661" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="kotak-securities" source="keywords">Kotak Securities</keyword>, said Bajaj Auto's volumes grew 14 per cent QoQ led by 30 per cent QoQ volume growth in the domestic two-wheeler segment. Its EBITDA margin expanded YoY, supported by commodity tailwinds. In Q3FY24, gross profit per vehicle and EBITDA per vehicle improved over Q2FY24. Recovery in the domestic two-wheeler segment is expected to continue. "We are impressed by Bajaj Auto's margin resilience despite adverse mix (3W volume contribution down 300bps QoQ). This validates the fact that its margin performance is not overtly dependent on 3W performance. Domestic 2W retail market share gain has been impressive at 150bps YoY to 12 per cent YTDFY24. Domestic 2W industry volumes have held up post festive season as well. We expect these to grow in high single-digit in FY25E," Elara Securities said.
