Nepal, which has been experiencing more frequent instances of <keyword id="20144034" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="extreme-weather" source="keywords">extreme weather</keyword> in recent times, became the victim of intense floods and <keyword id="19964849" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="landslides" source="keywords">landslides</keyword> once again over the weekend. An estimated 192 people have lost their lives, nearly 100 are injured and at least 30 individuals remain missing. Sources suggest that a low pressure system over the Bay of Bengal and the unusual positioning of the monsoon trough triggered exceptionally heavy rains across Nepal on Friday. Large swathes of eastern and central Nepal witnessed incessant downpours, resulting in overflowing of the Bagmati — Kathmandu’s main river. One of the hardest-hit areas has been the <keyword id="23370774" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Koshi-River-basin" source="keywords">Koshi River basin</keyword>, with its flooding impacting several districts like Sunsari, Saptari and Udayapur. Other rivers like <keyword id="23370775" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="gandaki" source="keywords">Gandaki</keyword> and Karnali also caused widespread flooding, with damage concentrated in Banke, Bardiya and Dang districts. The low-lying Terai plains in southern Nepal also faced severe flooding due to the accumulation of rainwater from higher elevations, especially in Morang, Jhapa and Rautahat districts. Reports indicate that the floods have damaged at least 322 houses and 16 bridges across Nepal. Many claimed that they have never seen such a devastating flood and inundation in the Kathmandu Valley in 40-45 years. But flooding was hardly the only side effect of the intense rains. Hilly areas, which are aplenty in Nepal, witnessed landslides. Areas like Sindhupalchok, Dolakha, and Lamjung experienced significant landslides that blocked highways and cut off access to remote villages. In <keyword id="20996363" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="gorkha" source="keywords">Gorkha</keyword> and Rasuwa, landslides destroyed homes and caused fatalities, with dozens feared trapped under debris. While thousands remain stranded in various parts of Nepal due to road disruption, as many as 4,000 people affected by flood and inundation have been rescued by the <keyword id="21227724" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nepal-Army" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Nepal Army" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Nepal Army">Nepal Army</keyword>, Nepal Police and Armed Police Force personnel, Ministry of Home Affairs spokesperson Rishiram Pokharel said. Health experts are warning of the outbreak of water-borne diseases, including cholera, as sanitation facilities have been compromised in many flood-affected areas. Hospitals in Nepalgunj and other cities are already overwhelmed with injured people and mobile health units have been deployed to provide medical aid in more remote locations. Experts have pointed out that <keyword id="19907392" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="climate-change" source="keywords">climate change</keyword> is intensifying the frequency of such extreme weather events. Nepal's fragile ecosystem, combined with poor infrastructure, makes the country highly vulnerable to floods and landslides. In the aftermath, rebuilding will require extensive resources, and long-term solutions are being discussed, such as the construction of river embankments, improving disaster preparedness, and better <keyword id="21033786" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="flood-forecasting" source="keywords">flood forecasting</keyword> systems. Nepal floods and landslides have claimed nearly 200 lives over the weekend. What's going on there?

Kathmandu, Jul 13 () Nepal's Culture minister has asked the staff of the trust that operates the Pashupatinath Hindu Temple to start making preparations to reopen the iconic religious and heritage site where special worship was suspended following a spike in COVID-19 cases. Addressing a review meeting of the Pashupati Area Development Trust (PADT) on Sunday, Yogesh Bhattarai told the staff of the organisation to launch a development initiative at the UNESCO World Heritage site. "I have received a complaint that the PADT was working in the interest of middlemen. Whoever is involved in it, it is not good and must be stopped immediately. Consider the interest of the religious site before acting on any plan," said Bhattarai, who is also Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation. The minister directed the staff to make preparations for the opening of the Pashupatinath Temple at a certain time during the day by adopting the health and safety measures, The Rising Nepal newspaper reported. "Various individuals and groups are eying the properties of the PADT, therefore, you must be vigilant to control such activities," the minister cautioned the staff of the trust. He drew the attention of the PADT to the encroachment of the land in Gothatar that belonged to Pashupati. "Immediately fix the boundary of the land and create a fence. If there are any structures created in the land, remove them," Bhattarai said. The minister said that it was important to keep an eye on the private investors who intend to make investments at the heritage site as the "crooked businessmen" could ruin the image of the religious site, the report said. Founded in 1996, PADT is a trust established to conserve and operate the Pashupatinath Temple and other charitable institutions in the Pashupatinath UNESCO World Heritage Sites area. Pashupatinath Temple is the largest temple complex in Nepal and stretches on both sides of the Bagmati River and sees thousands of worshippers from Nepal and India every day Last month, India pledged to construct a Rs 2.33 crore sanitation facility at the temple complex to improve the infrastructure at the holy shrine for the pilgrims. "The world is approaching a major turning point in its demographic trajectory and we think that the shift is likely to be sooner and sharper than mainstream projections suggest," Sanyal writes. 
In case you've missed it, the global <keyword id="6414006" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="fertility">fertility</keyword> rate has been steadily dropping since 1950. 
Sanyal points clients to the Total Fertility Rate (TFR), the average number of live births per women over her lifetime. For most developed countries, the TFR is well below the so-called "replacement rate" of 2.1-2.3. Even in emerging markets like Brazil, the TFR has dropped from 6.2 in the early 1950s to below replacement at 1.8, Sanyal notes.
And in China, the world's most populous country, the TFR is overstated due to a "skewed gender ratio." As Sanyal concludes, "In our view, global fertility will fall to the replacement rate in less than fifteen years."

We feel that the world's overall fertility rate will fall to replacement rate by 2025. In other words, reproductively speaking, our species will no longer be expanding - a major turning point in history. Of course, overall world population will still expand for a couple more decades due to momentum in the age structure and rising longevity, but this lagged effect will ultimately ease off unless we discover the elixir of immortality. Thus, we forecast that world population will peak around 2055 at 8.7bn and will then decline to 8.0bn by 2100. In other words, our forecasts suggest that world population will peak at least half a century sooner than the UN expects and that by 2100, and that level will be 2.8bn below the UN's prediction. This is obviously a radically different view of the world.

"We want merely want to alert readers to the strong likelihood that the future trajectory of world population could be an order of magnitude below what conventional projections suggest," Sanyal tells clients.
