 We know what you’re thinking and to answer your doubts- nope he wasn’t wearing a jersey or any accepted sportswear. Instead, <keyword id="6355107" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Baba-Ramdev">Baba Ramdev</keyword> was scoring it up on the field wearing his trademark saffron dhoti and matching shoes, with not a care in the world.

When Baba Ramdev played football wearing a dhoti

<keyword id="6355107" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Baba-Ramdev">Baba Ramdev</keyword>, in a promotional bout of the Patanjali Powervita Pro Wrestling League (<keyword id="3125098" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="PWL">PWL</keyword>) in New Delhi, displayed his wrestling skills as he went head-to-head with 2008 Olympic silver medalist Andriy Stadnik. Ramdev came out on top 12-0 over Stadnik. 
 
Stadink is well remembered by Indian wrestling enthusiasts as he had defeated Indian star wrestler Sushil Kumar in the Beijing Olympics. As the Ukrainian reached the final, it gave Sushil an opportunity to play in repechage and win a bronze medal. 
 
Reportedly, Baba Ramdev walked onto the mat and, before the bout began and exhibited his firebrand yoga moves before proceeding to his friendly battle with Stadnik. 
 
Since it was a promotional bout, Stadnik responded by allowing Ramdev to have his way, as did the referees. After nearly two minutes, he surrendered. 
 
This was not the first time that Baba Ramdev has shown interest in friendly wrestling bouts. Last year, on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of their Ashram in Haridwar, Baba had challenged India's only individual two-time Olympic wrestling medallist and former world champion Sushil.

Before long, the crowd ballooned to create a world record at the 105,000 mark for the ‘largest yoga session’ ever. That number isn’t just a headcount but calculated using standardised methods and drone cameras. That being said, reports suggest that the crowd grew up to 200,000 participants by the end of the day. The new record for the largest yoga session is nearly double the previous record of 55,524 people performing yogic asanas in Mysore just last year. Aside from Baba Ramdev, the Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje, officials from the Guinness World Records as well as 4,500 inspectors were present at the event. With the theme for this year’s International Yoga Day being ‘yoga for peace’, Ramdev expressed the need for people to embrace the three yog mantras of determination, hard work and good nature into their lives.

<ul><li><keyword id="6356684" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="patanjali">Patanjali</keyword>, in a press release, clarified that it’s not entering the telecom sector. </li><li><keyword id="6355107" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Baba-Ramdev">Baba Ramdev</keyword>’s <keyword id="6569072" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="swadeshi-samriddhi-sim-cards">Swadeshi Samriddhi SIM cards</keyword> are for Patanjali employees only. </li><li>The Patanjali-BSNL tie-up is in the spirit of Patanjali’s own ‘Swadeshi’ scheme.</li></ul>It was only yesterday that the Internet was abuzz with news of Baba Ramdev’s new ‘Swadeshi Samriddhi’ SIM cards with value-for-money deals tied in. Well, that’s not entirely true. Patanjali isn’t taking on Jio or any other telco with its Rs 144 plan, which was speculated since it would undercut a lot of existing options in the market. In an official <a href="http://indianexpress.com/article/technology/tech-news-technology/baba-ramdev-patanjali-swadeshi-sim-bsnl-not-true-fake-news-5195213/" data-type="tilCustomLink">press release</a>, Patanjali clarified that the Rs 144 BSNL plan, along with 2GB of data and 100 free SMS a day is only limited to the employees of the company. So, the company has no plans of entering the telecom foray, it’s only looking out for its employees. The press release also resolves that the SIM cards are being launched under the company’s ‘Swadeshi’ scheme. In effect, it’s an internal tie up that’s in the spirit of using products and services that are from India, and BSNL is an Indian telecom company.

The birds in Nestle's nest (logo) will also fly away." 
 
His confidence has come because of Patanjali achieving the 5000 crore mark, and successfully <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Indias-herbal-market-has-got-a-new-life/articleshow/51104012.cms">bringing Ayurveda back</a> into the daily lives of Indians, just the way he had brought Yoga back to the its country of origin many years ago. 
 
And now, Patanjali is all set to overpower traditional FMCG biggies like <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Patanjali-takes-over-the-entire-Ayurveda-industry/articleshow/51453997.cms">Hindustan Unilever, Nestle, Marico and Dabur</a>, and we say this basis data and records. 
 
Patanjali has <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Everyone-wants-to-be-a-part-of-Patanjalis-success-as-FMCG-giant-aims-Rs-1000-crore-this-fiscal/articleshow/51682270.cms">put a dent</a> on these companies in the past four months, and investors think that Ramdev's company will further impact their market share and consumer preferences. 
 
This year, so far, the BSE FMCG index, a gauge of the FMCG stocks on BSE, has already slumped 9%, even though the consumption demand has revived, along with the expectation of good monsoon, which would up rural wages and further support demand growth. 
 "I think the market is growing. So there is room for everyone, but there will be some give and take in market shares. Patanjali has this ayurvedic halo around it and Baba Ramdev is a great brand," Pradip P Shah, Chairman, <keyword id="1539139" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="IndAsia-Fund-Advisors">IndAsia Fund Advisors</keyword>, told ET. 
 
"There is a natural feeling that these products are good and the price points are lower compared with the premium products available in the market. There is a great product out there and their distribution and packaging are pretty good," he said. 
 
One might be forced to think that the success of this 10-year old FMCG firm is just because of Baba's charm. Raamdeo Agrawal, Co-Founder &amp; Joint MD of MOFSL, says, "It will definitely <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/BabaRamdevs-Patanjali-is-already-spelling-doom-for-this-global-brand-in-India/articleshow/51303845.cms">take away market shares</a> in some segments. They have a segment where they will thrive. So it is a marketing challenge for the rest of the pack, be it <keyword id="6365619" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Hindustan-UniLever">Hindustan Unilever</keyword> or Colgate or <keyword id="40233" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="emami">Emami</keyword>, whosoever is hurt by Patanjali products." However, he also added that, "Patanjali will have some challenges coming in later on product superiority, because one needs to see whether product superiority or just the blind faith in Baba Ramdev's brand equity is driving them" 
 
Some, however, are of the view that the market is big enough for the competitors to survive. "Clearly, Patanjali is making inroads, but that does not mean the Unilevers of the world will fade away. They are astute. They have excellent marketing. They will come out with different products. They will come out with different prices," Pradip P Shah of IndAsia Fund Advisors told ET.

After winning hearts of the consumers with <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=patanjali">Patanjali products</a>, Ramdev wants shopkeepers and traders to adopt ‘Made in India’ products. However, it is yet to see if the <keyword id="6363690" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="strategy">strategy</keyword> will work as the yoga guru is not paying anything extra to shopkeepers to give prominence to <keyword id="6356684" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="patanjali">Patanjali</keyword> products. 
 
Generally, companies pay shopkeepers to place their products prominently.

"No one can deny them (Patanjali) the Swadeshi plank. But we are Swadeshi too, and we also make in India. Besides, the shopkeepers are looking for returns on investment from their real estate space and pushing products for prominence on shops won't cut ice," Parle products marketing head Mayank Shah told ET. 
 
Meanwhile, Reliance Retail has created 'Patanjali Destinations' and the Future Group has a tie-up with <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/FMCG-companies-are-sweating-it-out-as-Baba-Ramdevs-Patanjali-is-entering-kitchens-and-even-bathrooms/articleshow/50351200.cms">Patanjali</a> already. 
 
Experts say the ‘swadeshi’ angle might work for end users but the strategy may fail with traders, who only mean good business. 
 
It is worth mentioning that IIFL Institutional Equities has projected the Patanjali brand's sales to reach Rs 20,000 crore by fiscal 2020. 
 
"We believe Patanjali will gather some initial market share in juices as it has done in honey and Chyawanprash on the back of lower priced products," Edelweiss Securities stated in its report.

Baba Ramdev wants shopkeepers to give prominence to Patanjali products without spending a penny, plays ‘swadeshi’ plank

<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=baba+ramdev&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Baba Ramdev’s</a> <keyword id="6356684" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="patanjali">Patanjali</keyword> is becoming a major threat to FMCGs and MNCs, who are doing everything they can to stop his juggernaut. 
 
However, it seems there is no stopping for Ramdev as his <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=patanjali&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Patanjali</a> leased 1.2 million sq ft of warehousing space across 20 cities. 
 Patanjali wants to double its revenues to Rs 10,000 crore by the end of March 2017. The Ayurveda brand is also working on enhancing its distribution network as it prepares for the roll out of the Goods and Services Tax (<keyword id="6354679" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="GST">GST</keyword>). 
 
“In the last three months, the Baba Ramdev-backed FMCG firm has leased 1.2 million sq ft of modern warehousing space across 20 top cities and will ramp this up to over 2 million sq ft by end of fiscal. We reached turnover of around Rs 5,000 crore at March-end and should reach Rs 10,000 crore by fiscal-end,” Acharya Balkrishna, who is Ramdev's partner in the venture, told ET. 
 
As <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=gst&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">GST</a> is also expected to get passed in Rajya Sabha, Patanjali is also planning for the new tax regime. 
 
“The entire supply chain planning is being done in-house, unlike FMCG firms that hire international consultants to draw up a plan. The company has hired a qualified team,” Balkrishna told ET, adding “the new manufacturing plants are likely to be in Vidharbha, Bundelkhand regions and Assam to tap markets in the Northeast.” 
 
Patanjali is also looking to set up a plant on the Yamuna Expressway near Noida. 
 
Patanjali started with a turnover of around Rs 450 crore in 2011-12 to Rs 2,000 crore in 2014-15 and more than doubling to Rs 5,000 crore at end of March 2016.

Our main aim was to serve mankind by making our country disease- free with the help of our age old science of Yoga &amp; Ayurveda, which have no side effects. Several problems do arise and we tackle them in the course of serving society vis-a-vis mankind. 
 
3. You are over 50 years old. What keeps you so fit other than yoga? 
Besides Yoga, factors that keep me fit are positive approach, simple living, high thinking, balanced food habits and a disciplined lifestyle close to nature. 
 
4. When you look at Indian companies, which are the ones with potential? 
We intend to see Indian companies (Swadesi) flourishing by their high quality, low priced hygienic products in the service of mankind. 
 
5. How do you ensure Patanjali’s employees are fit? Are they required to do mandatory hours of yoga? 
Patanjali's employees are taught, trained and guided to adopt healthy life-style free from all vices (like alcohol, tobacco) based on practice of Yoga, healthy food habits, Ayurvedic and natural medication &amp; dwelling near nature. 
 
6. You’ve been the center of many controversies. Why do you think that is? 
When there is a change or transformation takes place, no one easily intend to accept it. Transformation also attracts controversies. We should, thus, work in the legal frame of our country with great transparency while keeping our cultural and spiritual values in mind.

When asked if the company is planning to venture into the lucrative e-commerce sector Acharya Balkrishna, MD, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Patanjali+Ayurved">Patanjali</a> says, “It’s difficult for us to get into e-commerce due to our thin margins. We would have to hike prices or decrease quality to get in. That is not a part of our policy. We may try with some categories, but not all.” 
 
Patanjali sells over Rs. 50 lakhs to 1 Crore worth products per month from its website currently. 
 
<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Baba+Ramdev">Baba Ramdev</a> is incredibly optimistic about the ‘desi’ partnership. “We'll revolutionize the retail industry. We would offer products without discounts at prices that most brands do with discounts”, he declared. 
 “There is a lot of avenue for herbal products in the Indian market. We may also consider a manufacturing relationship with Patanjali”, <keyword id="44950" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Kishore-Biyani">Kishore Biyani</keyword>, CEO, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Future+Group">Future Group</a> said. 
 
When asked if <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Patanjali+Ayurved">Patanjali</a>'s appeal might eat into <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Future+Group">Future group</a>'s in-house brand revenues <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Kishore+Biyani">Biyani</a> smiles. "There would be products from <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Unilever">Unilever</a>, Future and other brands including <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Patanjali+Ayurved">Patanjali</a>. The best product would sell the most", he says. Ramdev adds, "We believe there should be a healthy competition between Swadeshi brands and MNCs.” 
 
While Biyani was tight-lipped about exporting <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Patanjali+Ayurved">Patanjali</a> products under his brand, Acharya Balkrishna revealed to BI India that the company already ships tonnes of its honey to the US.

Speaking to a group of professionals at the ongoing 'Goa Fest 2018' organised by the Advertising Agencies Association of India (AAAI), co-founder <keyword id="6355107" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Baba-Ramdev">Baba Ramdev</keyword> <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/industry/cons-products/garments-/-textiles/baba-ramdev-to-launch-patanjali-garments-in-2019/articleshow/63631770.cms">said</a>, "People are asking me, when are you launching jeans of your company in the market. So, we have decided to launch garment products, including ethnic wear, catering to kids, men and women next year." Since its conception, Patanjali has aggressively, and successfully, permeated most parts of the country with all kinds of products. You name it, they have it: soaps - check, honey - check, ayurvedic medicines - check, cookies - check, Mehandi - check, toothpaste - check, instant noodles - check, 'Shudhi' phenyl infused with cow urine - check. Now with this move, you could soon buy your yoga pants or that trendy pair of ripped jeans at the neighbourhood store or even online. Apart from garments, the company is also planning to launch its footwear brand called Paridhan. In January this year, the company announced a partnership with <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/industry/cons-products/fmcg/patanjali-to-partner-with-flipkart-amazon/articleshow/62519620.cms">eight major players</a> -- Amazon, Flipkart, Grofers, Shopclues, BigBasket, 1mg, Paytm Mall and Netmeds -- to sell its goods online, with a targeted revenue of over Rs 10000 million crore within the year. It has also <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/industry/services/retail/patanjali-stores-in-airports-soon-across-the-country/articleshow/63475065.cms">teamed up</a> with JHS Svendgaard Laboratories, a manufacturer of oral care products, to set up exclusive Patanjali stores at airports across the country. Their ability to make inroads into every nook and cranny of India as well as a few neighbouring countries -- Bangladesh and Nepal -- is impressive. In a statement made by Ramdev in January, he said, “We have created capacity of Rs 50,000 crore and we are racing ahead now. Our target is to beat HUL by next year.” Naysayers may find this hard to believe but the company’s FY17 <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/industry/cons-products/fmcg/page-1-patanjali-plans-to-overtake-hul-by-next-year-not-weighing-ipo-_-1000-crore-online-sales-target-this-year/articleshow/62532371.cms">sales</a> amounted to a Rs 105610 million which is pretty decent considering it is only 12-years-old as opposed to HUL which is 84-years-old and has reported sales of Rs 344870 million - almost three times that of Patanjali but with a head start of 72 years.
