The currency <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/bitcoin-price-rocketing-on-trump-win-2016-11">spiked on Donald Trump's shock victory in the US election</a> and <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/bitcoin-wallet-blockchain-record-trump-president-in-wallet-purchase-2016-11">bitcoin wallet provider Blockchain had a record month as a result.</a></p><p>"I think the world is starting to realise that, just like gold is a good hedge, bitcoin is a great hedge against the system because it's outside the system," says Bobby Lee, the CEO and cofounder of BTCC, one of China's three biggest bitcoin exchanges.</p><p>"Gold is sort of the hedge against the system, the status quo. Our society is ingrained with the current monetary system of fiat money, where governments issue it, they can put out as much of it as they want. Today's money system, in a very rude way, it's no different to airline miles or hotel reward points."</p><p>Like gold, cryptocurrency is not controlled by any one central bank or country. The network is instead run by a distributed and dispersed network of computers who do the back office work required to run the system in return for bitcoins. However, the work to earn 1 bitcoin gets harder and harder, requiring more and more computing power.</p><p>"The philosophy of bitcoin is that it's a limited digital asset," Lee says. "There's only 21 million bitcoin. The smallest amount you can get is not one bitcoin, you can get fractions of bitcoin. But if you own 1 bitcoin or 0.1 bitcoin you'll forever have that percentage of the world's supply. No one can dilute you. In that sense it's very attractive, it's very unique."</p><h2>'A much higher percentage of drug trades are done in US dollars'</h2><p>However, one thing standing in the way of bitcoin becoming a mainstream investment product is its reputation. The US dollar is also associated with drugs, drug money, cartels. Sure bitcoin can be used for that, but it can also be used for a lot of good things. I think it's a meta-narrative that's not factually based.<p></p><p>"I think it's a meta-narrative that's not factually based. If you want to look at facts, a much higher percentage of drug trades are done in US dollars - both in the number of instances and in the raw amounts. It's a matter of a narrative."</p><p>He turns to metaphor to support his point: "A knife can be used for good things - I'm using it to eat my breakfast - but it can be also used for potentially nefarious activities. It's how you choose it. You can try to eliminate all knifes and guns but it doesn't solve the problem of murder.</p><p>"Bitcoin - the question is about the causal relationship. Bitcoin itself does not cause drugs trades, just as the US dollar doesn't. I think it's more important we focus on the correct narrative - how bitcoin brings value to society. I'm not concerned. I think the truth will prevail. I truly bitcoin has great functionality and great features and it will be recognised for the value it brings to society, rather than any nefarious uses."</p><p>China currently <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/bitcoin-trading-china-yuan-remnibi-2017-1">dominates the global trade in bitcoin</a> and the price has been <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/btcc-ceo-bobby-lee-on-bitcoin-regulation-in-china-and-pboc-2017-1">hit in recent weeks by a government-led prove on bitcoin exchanges in the country.</a> Lee is confident that the currency can overcome these issues and is confident about the outlook for 2017.</p><p>"Four years ago bitcoin was very much used as trading in China," he says. Bitcoin is 'a great hedge against the system' and could be the new gold

<p>Bitcoin was still falling against the dollar on Saturday after <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/bitcoin-price-january-5-2017-2017-1">losing more than a fifth of its value in trade Thursday</a>.</p><p>Bitcoin was down more than 7% to $832 at 9:21 a.m. GMT (4:21 a.m. ET), <a href="http://markets.businessinsider.com/currencies/BTC-USD">according to Markets Insider</a>. Bitcoin is plunging again

According to Reuters, the country's three largest bitcoin exchanges announced they will begin <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/r-chinas-bitcoin-exchanges-eyed-by-regulators-slap-on-trading-fees-2017-1">charging a flat fee</a> of 0.2% per transaction. Releases from <a href="https://www.btcc.com/news/en/">BTCC</a><span>, <a href="https://news.huobi.com/">Huobi</a> and <a href="https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&amp;rct=j&amp;q=&amp;esrc=s&amp;source=newssearch&amp;cd=&amp;cad=rja&amp;uact=8&amp;ved=0ahUKEwiH58GXnNjRAhUG8CYKHTfID5cQFggaMAA&amp;url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.okcoin.com%2F&amp;usg=AFQjCNELtvNMKsYl5m5eFiHKfSA534Sa7Q&amp;bvm=bv.144686652,d.eWE">OkCoin</a> state that the fees are being implemented to</span> <span>"further curb market manipulation and extreme volatility." </span></p><p><span>Bitcoin has had a wild start to 2017. The cryptocurrency rallied more than 20% in the opening days of 2017 amid huge interest from China, which accounts for <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/bitcoin-trading-china-yuan-remnibi-2017-1">nearly 100% of trading</a>. </span><span>In fact, data from<span> </span><a href="https://www.cryptocompare.com/coins/btc/analysis/USD?utm_source=Triggermail&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=Post%20Blast%20(bii-fintech):%20Bitcoin%20surpasses%20%241,000%20mark%20%E2%80%94%20Digital-only%20bank%20raises%20%2410M%20%E2%80%94%20BBVA%20on%20blockchain%20regulation&amp;utm_term=BII%20List%20Fintech%20ALL">Cryptocompare</a> found,<span> "In the first 24 hours of the new year, over 5 million bitcoins were bought in Chinese yuan, equating to $3.8 billion. Bitcoin is shrugging off some big news of out of China

<p><strong><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>ANTHONY WALLACE/AFP/Getty Images)</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></strong></p><ul><li><strong>China has previously taken steps to curb cryptocurrency trading in the country, but recent moves may eliminate trading in the country completely. </strong></li><li><strong>People's Bank of China said on Sunday that it would block access to all domestic and foreign cryptocurrency exchanges and ICO websites.</strong></li><li><strong>China already banned Bitcoin exchanges in late 2017 as a way to stem online trading, but the attempt failed to eliminate cryptocurrency trading completely. </strong></li><li><strong>The cryptocurrency market has lost $340 billion of value since the start of January, and many speculate it has much to do with a regulatory crackdown in Asia. </strong></li></ul><p><br />China has previously taken steps to curb cryptocurrency trading in the country, but recent moves may eliminate trading in the country completely. </p><p>A news publication affiliated with the People's Bank of China (PBOC) said in an article on Sunday that it would block access to all domestic and foreign <span>cryptocurrency exchanges and ICO websites, the <a href="http://www.scmp.com/business/banking-finance/article/2132009/china-stamp-out-cryptocurrency-trading-completely-ban">South China Morning Post reported</a>.</span></p><p><span>China <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/bitcoin-price-ethereum-after-china-ico-ban">already banned bitcoin exchanges</a> in late 2017 as a way to stem online trading, but the attempt failed to eliminate cryptocurrency trading completely. </span><span></span></p><p><span>"ICOs and virtual currency trading did not completely withdraw from China following the official ban,"  the article said, according to SCMP.</span></p><p><span>Instead, many traders turned to foreign exchanges to make cryptocurrency transactions.</span></p><p><span>"Overseas transactions and regulatory evasion have resumed … risks are still there, fueled by illegal issuance, and even fraud and pyramid selling," the article said.</span></p><p><span>ICOs are a cryptocurrency-based fundraising method that has become popular with startups to raise money. Some industry experts have warned that <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2017/11/17/many-icos-are-fraud-according-to-ethereum-co-founder-and-ripple-ceo.html">many ICOs are fraudulent</a>, and operate in the gray area as they remain unregulated.</span></p><p>China news agency <a href="http://www.xinhuanet.com/english/2018-02/05/c_136950494.htm">Xinhua</a> said the PBOC would tighten its regulations on domestic crypto investors engaging in foreign transactions of ICOs and virtual currency as the market remains unstable.</p><p><span><a href="http://www.scmp.com/business/banking-finance/article/2129645/pboc-orders-banks-halt-banking-services-cryptocurrency">Earlier this month</a>, the PBOC prohibited financial institutions from providing any funding to activities related to cryptocurrencies.</span></p><p><span>The bans have already affected major cryptocurrency exchanges in the country. In September, </span><span>Shanghai-based bitcoin exchange BTCC <a href="https://www.coindesk.com/btcc-to-cease-china-trading-as-media-warns-closures-could-continue/">announced the closure</a> of its China trading operations.</span></p><p><span>According to the Post, China's moves to ban cryptocurrency trading in the country has yet to deter individual investors, who move their trading to other areas like Hong Kong or Japan while still raising funds from mainland investors. </span></p><p><span>It's uncertain whether new regulations will be effective in eliminate trading in the country completely, as China houses some of the <a href="https://qz.com/1055126/photos-china-has-one-of-worlds-largest-bitcoin-mines/">world's largest bitcoin mines</a>.  However, many agree that the moves will certainly have an impact on the Bitcoin market overall. </span></p><p>Stricter regulations by the PBOC will "definitely weigh on the cryptocurrency universe," Wayne Cao, who runs a company that recently offered 10 billion tokens in an ICO, told the Post.</p><p>Cao added that most of the Chinese ICO's, are invested in by Chinese investors, so a complete cryptocurrency shutdown would drag the entire cryptocurrency market down.</p><p>The bitcoin market has seen increased volatility in the last month, and many have speculated that the bitcoin bubble may soon burst. </p><p>Bitcoin was trading<span> below $8,000 a coin <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/bitcoin-ethereum-ripple-prices-on-february-5-bitcoin-below-8000-2018-2">on Monday</a> and closed in on $7,000 for the first time since November. China is moving to eliminate all cryptocurrency trading with a ban on foreign exchanges

Here's what you need to know on Monday.</p><p><strong><a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/trump-4-gdp-growth-promise-2017-1">Donald Trump is officially pledging to boost US growth to 4% per year during his presidency.</a> </strong>"To get the economy back on track, President Trump has outlined a bold plan to create 25 million new American jobs in the next decade and return to 4 percent annual economic growth," reads the White House site.</p><p><strong><a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/bank-of-america-may-leaving-single-market-immigration-control-2017-1">Prime Minister Theresa May's plan for a "hard Brexit" will lower UK incomes and cost up to 10% of GDP over 15 years, according to analysts at Bank of America Merrill Lynch.</a></strong> In a note to clients, the US investment bank highlighted the economic benefits of the customs union and single market, as well as the costs of leaving.</p><p><strong><a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/may-appears-on-marr-on-sunday-2017-1">May will hold talks with new US President Trump next week, becoming one of the first foreign leaders to meet with him since his inauguration.</a> </strong>She will discuss a "possible future trading agreement" between the <keyword id="6354868" type="COUNTRY" weightage="60" keywordseo="UK">UK</keyword> and the US during the meeting with Trump, as well as "how we can build the special relationship," she said.</p><p><strong><a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/australia-and-uk-post-brexit-trade-deal-2017-1">Australia has said it is willing to wrap up a trade deal with the UK in less than a year, if immigration restrictions are relaxed between the two countries, according to a top diplomat.</a> </strong>Australia's high commissioner to the UK, Alexander Downer, said a quick free trade agreement would be possible once there was more clarity from the government about post-Brexit priorities.</p><p><strong><a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/mortgage-fintech-habito-raises-55m-from-silicon-valleys-ribbit-capital-2017-1">Online mortgage broking startup Habito has raised £5.5 million from Silicon Valley-based Ribbit Capital and existing investor Mosaic Ventures.</a> </strong>The Series A round takes the total raised by the British startup to £8.2 million.
