Bharat Stage (BS) Emission Norms for the vehicles operated on the Indian roads was announced for the first time two decades back. These are considered the benchmarks in regulating how much pollutants the automobiles release in the air. BS VI refers to the sixth stage of the Bharat Stage Emission norms that will come into effect from 1 April 2020. The BS emission norms are based on the European emission norms and implement strict control over the emissions from vehicles. BS I was introduced in 2000 by the <keyword id="67999" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Central-Pollution-Control-Board">Central Pollution Control Board</keyword> under the Union Ministry of Environment, Forests, and Climate Change. This was followed by BS II in the year 2005, BS III in 2010 and BS IV in 2017. However, the wide spread alarms raised over the highly deteriorating condition of air pollution in the country has forced the government to skip the BS V and move straight away to BS VI. About BS VI (BS 6) Norms Referred to as the VI stage of Bharat Stage Emission norms, the main difference between the BS IV and the <keyword id="3165424" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="BS-VI-norms">BS VI norms</keyword> is the amount of sulphur content in the emissions. While BS IV compliant vehicles release 50 ppm (parts per million) sulphur, the BS VI compliant vehicles will only release 10 ppm sulphur. Also for the light duty diesel vehicles, the BS VI norms cut down the oxides of nitrogen emission limits. In case of light duty petrol vehicles, the emission of oxides of nitrogen are reduced by about 25 percent. In case of light duty diesel vehicles, BS VI has also introduced heightened particulate matter (PM) emission standard placing an upper limit of 6 X 1011 /km. For the light duty gasoline vehicles, the PM and PN limits have been specified as part of BS VI while they are applied only in case of vehicles that are reported with direct injection <keyword id="240487" type="DOMAIN" weightage="20" keywordseo="engines">engines</keyword>. BS VI also comes with a critical change in the approval procedures for light duty vehicles. It has mandated that portable emissions measurement systems (PEMS) be used for the purpose of in-service commission testing. This will help ensure the emissions performance recorded during the laboratory testing is also maintained during the real world driving conditions. Implementation of BS VI in India In 2018 October, the Supreme Court banned the sales of BS IV vehicles which should never be seen in the market from April 1, 2020. The Supreme Court has also said strictly that there will not be any grace time given to the vehicle manufacturers to sell the vehicles that are not in compliance with the BS VI norms after this deadline. So we can say the BS VI norms will take effect from April 1, 2020. In order to comply with the BS VI norms, the vehicle manufacturers need to invest in technology that will let them upgrade the vehicle they already have with them in stock. Also, they will have to move to the new technology to make the new vehicles in compliant with the BS VI standards.

What are BS VI Norms?

As per the Supreme Court Order, Indian market will see only the sale of BS VI compliant vehicles from April 1, 2020. These new emission control standards being introduced in India will need widespread measures in terms of emission control, automotive electronics, fuel-grade and ECU changes. While the Bharat Stage Emission norms mainly focus on minimizing the pollutant emissions from the vehicles run on the Indian roads, the standards of the VI stage of these norms coming under the title BS VI will call for a drastic change in the technology adopted by the India vehicle manufacturers. The implications of BS VI norms Once these norms come into effect, the emission levels in India will come on par with the emissions standards in the European countries and the US. This also marks a major advancement in the vehicle manufacturing technology in India which will match with the other advanced automotive technologies seen across the globe. Bharat Stage VI norms will demand a host of technology modifications the most important one being the implementation of OBD (on-board diagnostics) a mandatory feature for all the vehicles. The need for India to move to the BSIV to BS VI norms India is a vast country with 10 highly populated cities. This is a qualification that we might not feel happy to boast of considering the alarming amount of pollutants the vehicles of the country release on the Indian roads. In the Indian cities, the vehicular emissions are major contributors to the worsening of air quality. Studies show that the release of NOx, SO2, CO2 and other particulate matters take a toll on the health of Indians. For instance, the PM2.5 levels in a city like Delhi is 6 times more than what is allowed by the WHO. Following the Paris Climate Agreement signed by India in 2016, India has taken the responsibility to cut down its carbon footprint by 35-55% within the next 12 years from what was recorded in 2005. These carbon footprint obligations have forced the country to move directly to BS VI norms bypassing the BS V norms. The BS VI norms will see the NOx emissions come down by 25% approximately in case of petrol engines and 68% in case of diesel engines. The PM emissions for diesel engines will come down by 80%. Technology changes that BS VI demand The OEMs cannot just add some additional components in the manufactured vehicles to reduce the emissions. If Euro VI compliant DPF needs to be fitted in a small diesel car made in India, the bonnet size will have to increase by exceeding the 4 meters mark. In case of natively developed OEMs like Mahindra and TATA, the new standards will have to be implemented in their line of vehicles with utmost perfection. Since this technology has to be multiplied over hundreds of platforms, the challenge seems to be higher. In order to control the PM and NOx emissions, the OEMs will need to implement various kinds of technologies like fitting Diesel particulate filter (DPF) in the vehicles to expel particulate matters from the gas exhausted. For reducing the NOx emission, selective catalytic reduction (SCR) and <keyword id="854698" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="exhaust-gas-recirculation">exhaust gas recirculation</keyword> (EGR) need to be used.

What is BS6 Engine Technology?

India is set to welcome the new Bharat Stage VI (BS-VI) norms from April 1, 2020. However, defence vehicles were given an exception from BS IV norms in 2016 and this could be repeated again. “They have conveyed that it will be difficult to procure new vehicles till 2019 and have said that the dispensation given to the army should also be given to paramilitary vehicles because their operational areas are also similar,” according to an official. Armed forces might get an exemption from new vehicular emission norms

New Delhi, Mar 16 () Bajaj Auto Ltd on Monday said it has launched its BS-VI range of commercial vehicles across brands -- RE, Maxima and Maxima Cargo. The company has launched 14 BS-VI compliant products across the RE, Maxima and Maxima Cargo brands and thus has transitioned to BS-VI regime for the entire three-wheeler range, Bajaj Auto said in a statement. With the upgrade, the RE brand now comes with fuel injection (FI) technology in a 236 cc engine across three fuel options -- CNG, LPG and petrol, it added. In the Maxima brand, the same engine has been re-configured to meet BS-VI emission norms, the company said. The diesel range across RE and Maxima brands meet the stringent BS-VI norms through systems like exhaust gas recirculation and catalytic converter with the same 470 cc diesel engine. Commenting on the launch, BAL Joint President, Intracity Business Unit, Samardeep Subandh said: "The introduction of these models completes the transition of our entire product range to BS-VI emission norms ahead of time." He further said,"We are confident that the new BS6 products in RE and Maxima range will further strengthen our leadership position in the market." Bajaj Auto launches BS-VI range of 3-wheelers, completes transition to new emission norm

New Delhi, Jan 22 () The country's largest carmaker Maruti Suzuki India on Wednesday said its BS-VI compliant vehicles have reached cumulative sales of 5 lakh units ahead of the implementation of stricter emission norms from April 1.
The company is now offering ten models with BS-VI compliant petrol engines, Maruti Suzuki India Ltd (MSIL) said in a statement.
"This achievement reaffirms the growth potential of new engines and technologies in India," MSIL Managing Director &amp; CEO Kenichi Ayukawa said.
He further said,"Early introduction of the BS-VI compliant engine in our popular models represents our commitment to the government's vision for clean and green environment."
 MSIL introduced its first BS-VI compliant petrol car in April 2019, a full year in advance from the mandatory deadline. The company's range of BS-VI compliant petrol models includes Alto, Eeco, S-Presso, Celerio, WagonR, Swift, Baleno, Dzire, Ertiga and XL6. 
 "These contribute nearly 75 per cent of the company's petrol volumes," MSIL said.

Maruti Suzuki sells 5 lakh BS-VI vehicles ahead of implementation of new emission norms

Greater Noida, Feb 5 () Mahindra &amp; Mahindra on Wednesday introduced Cruzio range of buses at the auto expo here and has formally entered into the passenger bus segment.Cruzio would establish Mahindra, a full range player in the commercial vehicle segment having presence across the segment.The company has launched two variants Cruzio and Cruzio Grande having a seating capacity of 15 to 65, respectively and would be compliant with BS VI emission norms."We have formally entered into the bus segment with Cruzio range," said Mahindra &amp; Mahindra Managing Director Pawan Goenka.Mahindra &amp; Mahindra President Automotive Sector Rajan Wadhera said: "The launch of our CRUZIO range of buses is another significant step toward making us a full range player in the CV segment." Mahindra enters bus segment with Cruzio

Mumbai, Dec 23 () Suzuki Motorcycle India on Monday announced it will roll out the BS VI-compliant models of its vehicles from next month, with all-new Suzuki Access 125 scooter set to be the first offering to be launched under the new emission norms.
 The domestic automobile industry has to switch cover to Bharat Stage (BS) VI emission regulations from April next year, replacing the existing BSIV norms, 
 Suzuki Motorcycle's top-selling scooter, Access 125, will be the first product to be rolled out as part of the new emission norms from the Indian subsidiary's portfolio, the company said in a release.
 "We are thrilled to announce our first BS6 product way ahead of the regulation enforcement deadline of April 1. For more than a decade now, Suzuki Access 125 has been among the segment's top-selling scooter. The all-new Access 125 comes loaded with new features," said Koichiro Hirao, Managing Director, Suzuki Motorcycle India.
 The BSVI-compliant Suzuki Access 125 will be launched in India soon, the company said in the release.
 The new scooter will come with new key features such as eco assist illumination, fuel injection engine, external fuel filling lid and LED headlamp.
 Besides, the new special edition model will offer standard USB DC socket for charging mobile phones on the go, the company said.

Suzuki Motorcycle to roll out BS-VI models from Jan, Access 125 to be first offering

New Delhi, Jan 6 () Suzuki Motorcycle India Pvt Ltd (SMIPL) on Monday said it has launched its first BS-VI compliant Suzuki Access 125 scooter priced between Rs 64,800 and Rs 69,500 (ex-showroom Delhi).
 The all-new Suzuki Access 125 BS-VI version will be available in standard as well as special variant with alloy drum brake, alloy disc brake and steel drum brake options, SMIPL said in a statement.
 The standard variant of the new BS-VI compliant Suzuki Access 125 will be retailed at price starting Rs 64,800, whereas the special edition will be available at a price starting Rs 68,500 depending on the variant, going up to Rs 69,500 (all prices ex-showroom Delhi), it said. 
 "Suzuki Access 125 is a major contributor to SMIPL's growth story and has received an overwhelming response from our customers. We believe that with the launch of all-new Suzuki Access 125 BS-VI compliant version, we will continue to meet and exceed our customers' expectations," SMIPL Managing Director Koichiro Hirao said.
 He further said the company has introduced the new family scooter ahead of the regulatory timeline and would continue to work toward aligning its product portfolio with the new emission norms.

Suzuki Motorcycle India launches BS-VI version of scooter Access 125, priced up to Rs 69,500

New Delhi, Nov 20 () German luxury carmaker BMW on Wednesday said it has upgraded its entire petrol vehicle range in India to conform to BS VI emission regulations.
 The automaker said it is now working to upgrade its diesel range to conform to stricter emission norms which kick in the country from April, 1 next year.
 The petrol portfolio is already BS VI compliant while, the diesel portfolio will be converted ahead of stipulated timelines, BMW India said in a statement.
 The company's Chennai-based plant has started local production of BS VI diesel variants of the 5 Series and 6 Series Gran Turismo and is also gearing up to roll out new X1, it added.
 "The complete petrol portfolio is already BS VI compliant while the diesel portfolio will be converted ahead of stipulated timelines. BMW Group Plant Chennai has started local production of BS VI diesel variants of the BMW 5 and the BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo," BMW India said in a statement.
 The production of BS VI version of the BMW X1 will also begin soon, it added.
 "Early start of BS VI production is a strategic call we are taking to meet the unprecedented demand for our new products," BMW Group India President and Chief Executive Officer Rudratej Singh said.
 Beginning next year, the company will increase prices of BS VI models by up to 6 per cent, he added. MSS SHW

BMW upgrades entire petrol model range in India to conform to BS VI emission norms

Come 2020, the automobile manufacturers would in no way be able to fudge emission norms. April of 2020 is the time when BS VI emission standards of cars would be implemented. As discussed earlier, India would skip BS V and skip to BS VI directly. 
 
After 2014, the emissions are checked by the government approved agencies in tie ups with manufacturers. But soon after introducing BS VI, the govt would test cars randomly by picking up from dealers. The transport ministry has said that 50% of test cars would be sourced directly from the dealers to check goof ups, a process known as conformity of production (COP). 
 Currently India doesn’t have any emission norm, which is why <keyword id="6361865" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Volkswagen">Volkswagen</keyword>’s infamous emission scam couldn’t be prosecuted in India. 
 
"Now this share of getting samples from dealers has been doubled. So, the manufacturers cannot manipulate with the vehicles that are lifted randomly from dealers or warehouse," a government official told the ET.

BS VI emission: Random cars from dealers to be sourced for testing from 2020

New Delhi, Mar 31 () India is all set to enter the strict BS-VI emission era from Tuesday midnight with Indian automobile industry pumping in around Rs 70,0000 crore in the last four years to upgrade its technology. While auto companies put in around Rs 40,000 crore to upgrade their facilities and products, the auto component industry chipped in with an investment of Rs 30,000 crore for the same. Originally, automobile manufacturers across segments were to not produce or sell BS-IV vehicles from midnight tonight, although the Supreme Court recently allowed sale and registration of BS-IV vehicles for ten days after the end of the ongoing lockdown. Automotive Component Manufacturers Association of India (ACMA) President Deepak Jain said the auto components industry invested around Rs 30,000 crore for migrating to BS-VI regime. In the long-term, the changeover to stricter emission norms would be beneficial for the country, but in short-term it would bring pain in terms of price escalation to an industry which is already reeling under a slowdown and now the lockdown due to coronavirus pandemic, he added. "Besides this, we also need initiatives like scrappage policy at the earliest to chuck out old polluting vehicles from roads," Jain said. Reflecting upon the company's journey of upgrading to stricter emission norms, Maruti Suzuki India (MSI) Senior Executive Director and Member of Executive Board CV Raman said the auto major conducted over 11,000 emission tests across 14 models, besides spending hundreds of hours on engine calibration and validations. "All of these efforts helped us in phasing out BS-IV systematically and we are glad to share that we barely have any BS-IV inventory left. We were able to liquidate all our BS-IV stock and hence there is no need for any fire sales from Maruti," Raman said. The company had upgraded its mass models such as Alto and Baleno with BS-VI petrol engines in April 2019. This was closely followed by other models. MSI stopped production of BS-IV vehicles in January 2020. In fact, the auto major has already sold over 7.5 lakh BS-VI units till date. Similarly, Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) Senior Vice President Naveen Soni said the company's vehicles turned compliant to BS-VI norms well ahead of time. "We have been successful in upgrading our vehicles to BS-VI technology before the stipulated timelines, thereby allowing us to focus on the production and sale of BS-VI vehicles," he noted. Various other carmakers including Honda, Hyundai and Tata Motors have also worked towards making their products BS-VI compliant. Similarly, various two-wheeler companies and commercial vehicle players have also announced transition to BS-VI norms. On a petition filed by auto dealers' body FADA, the Supreme Court on March 27 allowed the sale of unsold stock of BS-IV vehicles for 10 days after the expiry of the lockdown period, except in Delhi-NCR. The Federation of Automobile Dealers Association (FADA) had sought additional time of two months to clear the BS-IV inventory. The nationwide lockdown imposed on March 24 to check spread of coronavirus will last till April 14. The government in 2016 had asked automobile industry to upgrade to BS-VI norms by April 1, 2020. The short deadline was unprecedented anywhere in the world as it was a leap from BS-IV to BS-VI. Deteriorating air pollution situation in various cities, including Delhi-NCR, was one of the prominent reason to usher in stricter emission norms in the country. In 2018, the Supreme Court ordered that no Bharat Stage-IV (BS-IV) vehicle shall be sold across the country with effect from April 1, 2020. New Delhi, Mar 16 () Honda Motorcycle &amp; Scooter India (HMSI) on Monday said it has sold over 5.5 lakh units of BS-VI-compliant vehicles till date. The company currently has six BS-VI-compliant models -- Activa 125 SP 125, Activa 6G, Shine, Unicorn and Dio -- available in the market. The strict BS-VI emission norms come into effect from April 1. Commenting on crossing the milestone, HMSI Senior Vice-President (Sales and Marketing) Yadvinder Singh Guleria said, "The launch of six BS-VI-compliant models offering many segment-first features has provided Honda with great momentum to leap ahead in the BS-VI era." He said the company's offer of additional benefits such as 6-year warranty package (3 years standard and 3 years optional extended warranty) has helped in getting good response from customers for its BS-VI product line. HMSI crosses 5.5 lakh units sales of BS-VI-compliant vehicles

New Delhi, Jan 30 () Petrol and diesel prices may go up by 50 paise to Re 1 per litre beginning April when India leapfrogs to using Euro-VI emission-compliant ultra-clean auto fuels.
 Currently, BS-IV grade fuel, equivalent to Euro-IV emission-compliant fuel, is being supplied in the country and the government decided to leapfrog to BS-VI grade fuel from April 2020 to cut vehicular emissions, which are one among the many reasons for rising pollution in the national capital and other cities.
 Sanjiv Singh, chairman of Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), the country's largest oil firm, said that all of the company's refineries have started producing BS-VI grade fuel and the same will reach depots across the country by next month. "We are very much sticking to April 1 deadline and 100 per cent of petrol and diesel in the country will be BS-VI compliant from April 1," he said.
 Petrol currently costs Rs 73.36 per litre in Delhi and diesel is priced at Rs 66.36 a litre.
 IOC invested Rs 17,000 crore in upgrading its refineries to produce the cleaner fuel while industry spent some Rs 30,000 crore.
 "We are in the process of working out implications of supplying BS-VI fuel from April," he said adding that the international benchmark price for petrol and diesel compliant with BS-VI grade is higher than BS-IV fuel and since domestic fuel prices are directly linked to global rates, pump prices will have to rise.
 He said exact numbers are being worked out but the increase would not be significant to warrant a staggered hike.
 "I don't think premium (for BS-VI) will be larger for it to be staggered," he said indicating a one-time hike in petrol and diesel prices when the BS-VI grade fuel is rolled out across the country.
 Though the exact quantum is being worked out, the increase may be anywhere between Rs 0.50 per litre and Re 1 a litre, he said.
 As part of India's fuels upgradation programme, the vehicular pollution norms introduced in the early 1990s have been made more stringent over time. The current BS-IV norms were enforced in 2017, after BS-II and BS-III norms, which were enforced in 2005 and 2010, respectively.
 In the transition to BS-VI fuels, BS-V norms have been skipped in order to have a more stringent standard at the earliest to curb pollution levels.
 As per the roll-out plan, national capital Delhi and adjoining cities were to have BS-VI fuel supplies by April 2019 and the rest of the country from April 2020. Oil firms switched over to supply of BS-VI grade fuels in the national capital territory (NCT) on April 1, 2018. Supply of BS-VI fuels was further extended to four contiguous districts of Rajasthan and 8 of Uttar Pradesh in the national capital region (NCR) on April 1, 2019, together with the city of Agra. BS-VI grade fuels were made available in 7 districts of Haryana from October 1, 2019.
 BS-VI fuels are ultra-clean fuels with sulphur content cut to just 10 parts per million (ppm) from 50 ppm in BS-IV fuels. The emission norms of BS-VI diesel are as good or even superior to those of compressed natural gas (CNG).
 "Switchover to BS-VI fuel supplies by IOC's marketing and retail network is also in full-swing across the country. As per the current progress, about 80 per cent of IOC's 121 bulk storage terminals/depots will achieve the conversion from BS-IV to BS-VI fuels by January 31, 2020. In the markets catered to by them, 100 per cent dispensing of BS-VI fuels at petrol/diesel stations is likely to be achieved by the end of February 2020," Singh said. New Delhi, Feb 19 () India will switch to the world's cleanest petrol and diesel from April 1 as it leapfrogs straight to Euro-VI emission compliant fuels from Euro-IV grades now - a feat achieved in just three years and not seen in any of the large economies around the globe.India will join the select league of nations using petrol and diesel containing just 10 parts per million of sulphur as it looks to cut vehicular emissions that are said to be one of the reasons for the choking pollution in major cities.Sanjiv Singh, Chairman of Indian Oil Corp (IOC) - the firm that controls roughly half of the country's fuel market, said almost all refineries began producing ultra-low sulphur BS-VI (equivalent to Euro-VI grade) petrol and diesel by the end of 2019 and oil companies have now undertaken the tedious task of replacing every drop of fuel in the country with the new one."We are absolutely on track for supplying BS-VI fuel from April 1. Almost all refineries have begun supplying BS-VI fuel and the same has reached storage depots across the country," he said. From storage depots, the fuel has started travelling to petrol pumps and in the next few weeks all of them will only have BS-VI grade petrol and diesel, he said. "We are 100 per cent confident that fuel that will flow from nozzles at all the petrol pumps in the country on April 1 will be BS-VI emission compliant fuel." India adopted Euro-III equivalent (or Bharat Stage-III) fuel with a sulphur content of 350 ppm in 2010 and then took seven years to move to BS-IV that had a sulphur content of 50 ppm. From BS-IV to BS-VI it took just three years. "It was a conscious decision to leapfrog to BS-VI as first upgrading to BS-V and then shifting to BS-VI would have prolonged the journey to 4 to 6 years. Besides, oil refineries, as well as automobile manufacturers, would have had to make investments twice - first to producing BS-V grade fuel and engines and then BS-VI ones," he said. State-owned oil refineries spent about Rs 35,000 crore to upgrade plants that could produce ultra-low sulphur fuel. This investment is on top of Rs 60,000 crore they spent on refinery upgrades in the previous switchovers. BS-VI has a sulphur content of just 10 ppm and emission standards are as good as CNG. Originally, Delhi and its adjoining towns were to have BS-VI fuel supplies by April 2019 and the rest of the country was to get same supplies from April 2020. But oil marketing companies switched over to supply of BS-VI grade fuels in the national capital territory of Delhi on April 1, 2018. The supply of BS-VI fuels was further extended to four contiguous districts of Rajasthan and eight of Uttar Pradesh in the National Capital Region (NCR) on April 1, 2019, together with the city of Agra. BS-VI grade fuels were made available in 7 districts of Haryana from October 1, 2019. Singh said the new fuel will result in a reduction in NOx in BS-VI compliant vehicles by 25 per cent in petrol cars and by 70 per cent in diesel cars. The switchover, he said, is a tedious task as every drop of old, higher-sulphur content fuel has to be flushed out in depots, pipelines and tanks before being replaced by BS-VI. "We are confident of disruption-free switchover to BS-VI supplies across the country," he said. "What we will be supplying is the best quality available anywhere in the world. You don't have any better fuel that is supplied in any part of the world. Perhaps our BS-VI fuel will be better than equivalent fuel in some parts of the US and Europe." India adopted a fuel upgradation programme in the early 1990s. Low lead gasoline (petrol) was introduced in 1994 in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai. On February 1, 2000, unleaded gasoline was mandated nationwide. Similarly, BS-2000 (Euro-I equivalent, BS-1) vehicle emission norms were introduced for new vehicles from April 2000. BS-II (Euro-II equivalent) emission norms for new cars were introduced in Delhi from 2000 and extended to the other metro cities in 2001. Benzene limits have been reduced progressively from 5 per cent in 2000 to 1 per cent nationwide. Lead content in gasoline was removed in phases and only unleaded gasoline is being produced and sold from February 1, 2000. The octane number of gasoline signifies the improved performance of the engine. Loss in octane number due to phasing out of lead was made up by installing new facilities in the refinery and changes in refinery operation. RON (Research Octane Number) of gasoline for BS-2000 spec was increased to 88. This has over time been increased to 91. Singh said sulphur reduction will reduce Particulate Matter (PM) emissions even in the in-use older generation diesel vehicles. ANZ MKJ
