CES is often the hotbed of whacky new technology concepts and solutions – not all of those become reality or find their way into consumer goods, but it’s still a peek into the future and scratches the surface of the next set of innovations which might one day become mainstream. BMW’s concept uses a simple solution that we have seen elsewhere – in e-readers. However, this is perhaps one of the first instances of this colour-changing tech making its way to cars. The BMW iX that was presented at the CES is capable of changing its colour from white to black and grey. It’s still a fairly constrained colour palette, but it shows us this is possible and it’s more than just a fancy concept. The company says that the different shades could help the car remain relatively cooler under direct sun, for instance, since white surfaces reflect a lot more sunlight than black ones. Similarly, in cooler weathers, darker tones would help the car absorb more warmth from the sun, thereby reducing the need to amp up the heater inside the car. It is powerful as it can deliver up to 11Gbps of data, however, its most unique feature would be the mechanical antennas that rotate and adjust according to where most devices are placed in the household. It also features a 10Gb ethernet port for wired connectivity. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Razer Zephyr Pro smart mask" comment="subhead" text="Razer Zephyr Pro smart mask">Razer Zephyr Pro smart mask</cmsannotation> This smart mask from Razer is the need of the hour, however in a fancy way. It features an N95 filter, dual-fan active air filtration system and an RGB lighting to make it stand apart. Seeking a double digit growth this year, <keyword id="45964" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Rolls-Royce">Rolls Royce</keyword> plans to attract women and younger buyers as these are its hot customers right now who are boosting its sales. Two factors, with cars starting at around Rs 3 crore and going up to Rs 6 crore depending on the level of customisation, only those with serious spending money can afford a Rolls and the growth in the number of female ultra-high net worth individuals is expected to exceed that of males, fuelled by entrepreneurship, albeit on a smaller base, are working behind its sales. 
 "This expected growth of affluent self-made women is very encouraging," said <keyword id="85936" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Paul-Harris">Paul Harris</keyword>, region director, Asia Pacific for Rolls Royce. "Buyers now are younger. I would say female interest has doubled, female ownership of our modern products has significantly increased." 
 Film star <keyword id="1655" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Priyanka-Chopra">Priyanka Chopra</keyword> bought a Rolls last year, according to industry sources. 
 
"I like the design, which I feel is a marvel that transcends time," Gupta told ET recently. "Every inch of the car is an epitome of superior craftsmanship. The design pays homage to the classical models, but is still contemporary. The Ghost starts silently, and stays silent even when it gathers speed. I find its power of silence remarkable," said entrepreneur Paras Gupta, 22, a director at pre-school chain Mother's Pride, who recently took delivery of a Rolls Royce Ghost Series 2 in Delhi. 
 
 
Moreover, Rolls Royce will be organising an exclusive women's event in Mumbai this year, said Harris. The events will revolve around the fashion and bridal arenas — no men will be allowed, not even Harris. 
 
He also pointed out that the seven members Asia marketing team is all women. Additionally, the company's Bespoke Design Team at the Goodwood headquarters in the UK has textile design experts Cherica Haye and Michelle Lusby who are responsible for designing exterior paint and leather colours as well as interior textures. In India, the dealership in Chennai is headed by a woman and the company intends to hire a significant female workforce at its sales outlets going ahead. 
 
"We need to adapt and make sure that there are enough women working at our dealerships, so we would be hiring more to cater to future need," Harris said. Besides this, the company is trying to make its communication more suited to a youthful audience rather than those of an older generation, he said. It collaborated with New York's <keyword id="212569" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Pratt-Institute">Pratt Institute</keyword>, known for its architecture, interior design and industrial design programmes, on the 'Inspired by Fashion' version of the Wraith. The launch event in New York in March 2015 also featured three women fashion leaders discussing change in the fashion industry. 
 
Apart from the Wraith cited above, the Phantom Limelight has also been designed to appeal to women. The Limelight, of which only 25 have been made, features a women's pannier, or storage area, that can be personalised. 
 
Super sports carmaker Lamborghini is also catering to this trend. When it comes to choosing among sports cars, women tip the scales, according to internal research. Globally, celebrity Lamborghini owners include Nicki Minaj, Rihanna and model Deana Uppal. 
This is a reflection of women wanting to drive the powerful machines that were once the preserve of men, said Pavan Shetty, head of operations at Lamborghini India. 
 
"The number of women who own Lamborghinis today and the ones who share the cars with their husbands is increasing," he said. "We intend to seriously increase our engagement with women prospects and would like to see more women owning our cars." Harris, who declined to mention a target for sales this year, was asked if 100 cars a year would be possible. 
 
"That number is still the market we see as the potential, with the product lines that are coming in and as long as the rest of the platform remains same," he said. "I think it is possible. Absolutely." He also sees forthcoming models as widening the company's appeal. One is the Dawn, which will be launched globally this year and is likely to reach India by 2016. The Cullinan, the company's first SUV, is expected to be launched in three years or so. 
 All alike agree that catering to women’s likes is the key to its growth. The market for super <keyword id="6376889" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="luxury-cars">luxury cars</keyword> such as Rolls Royce, Bentley, Lamborghini and Ferrari, priced at Rs 2 crore to Rs 6 crore, posted a decline of 15% to 110-115 units due to sluggish macro-economic factors. 
 
Last year, Rolls Royce sold 4,000 cars worldwide — the fifth record year in a row. But only 40 of those cars were sold in India, down from 91 in 2011. In the luxury auto trade, the marque has unbeatable cachet but the BMW-owned Rolls Royce needs to rebuild sales in the country.

<keyword id="2573" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="air-india" source="Orion">Air India</keyword>'s cabin crew union has objected to the company's new rules mandating pre-flight -- Body Mass Index (BMI) and weight -- checks by "grooming associates". The All India Cabin Crew Association conveyed its objections to the airline's 'Inflight Services Department'. On January 20, 2022, the Executive Director of ISD, through an internal communication, informed cabin crew members about the new rules of checks on a quarterly basis. The guidelines were introduced so that the crews are in line with laid-out norms in the uniform regulations. According to the communication, the cabin supervisor of the flight will be responsible to ensure the required guidelines are followed. "...it will be the responsibility of the cabin supervisor of the flight to ensure that her/his set of crew are well turned out and follow complete uniform regulations," the communication sent out by the airline said. The bone of contention between the union and the airline was that the latter wants these checks to be conducted by doctors in the privacy of medical clinics instead of "grooming assistants". "Furthermore there is to be dignity and privacy during the conduct of such medical checks, and ladies may only be treated/checked by a female practitioner," the union said. Besides, the newly-mandated compliance may disturb cabin crew members mentally ahead of their flights, it said. "This stressful BMI check during a reporting at 'CCMCO' is bound to disturb crew mental preparation through giving rise to flight safety issues, pre-departure when cabin crew are required to conduct rapid review and briefings," the union added. The new rules could be in violation of the 'Share Purchase Agreement' between the government and Air India and Tata Group -- the new owner of the national carrier awaiting formal handover, the union said in the letter to the ISD. The union may seek legal remedies if the new rules are not withdrawn, it said. "Respectfully, we thus would call upon you to amend the impugned circular and reissue it without the offending clause of 'BMI Check/BMI Management' failing which AICCA may be compelled to seek legal redressal which may also extend to the issuance of a directive and/or contempt, none of which we desire at this stage," it added. Once you can track the trends, you can analye their influence on your brand over time, the possible directions of growth to take in future. The brand manifesto, once it has been created will largely consist of the following: name, colour, font type, spaces, motion and how it leads to different mediums. What would happen if one day, suddenly, he gets all buffed up, adopts grunge, starts talking slang and hangs out with truckers! It's going to take a while to accept the changes - if at all! Brands are no different. They start out with a purpose and a promise. That's sacrosanct. Over time and as people and lifestyles change, it incorporates subtly these very changes in itself too. Design helps in keeping the brand contemporary. Only if it needs to. There are some that are staunchly ancient. But it's their DNA. maybe they are agarbattis, clinging on to tradition. Conclusion There is no anti-ageing cream. Design is but one aspect of keeping brands from ageing. It really is the meaning it brings to our lives. That is what dictates its success. But like in life, everything has a shelf life. Everything ages, eventually. Those that stay with the times seem immortal. But then they’ve earned the right to be called ageless. But change doesn't have to be just for the sake of change. If the brand owners do not have a compelling answer to the question, "Why are we revamping the brand?", they'd be better off leaving it alone.
