BMW launches its 3rd gen BMW X1 in India

BMW India unveils all-new sports car M2 at ₹98 lakh

The model will help pave the way for a new electric era for the automaker, which has largely sat on the sidelines of the EV rush over the last decade.BMW's first fully electric sedan (BMW calls the i3 a sedan but it's really more of a hatchback), the i4 will deliver up to 530 horsepower and an EPA-estimated range of 300 miles, the company said. <ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="6355119" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="bmw">BMW</keyword> and two of its subsidiaries agreed to pay a joint penalty of $18 million to the US <keyword id="106012" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Securities-and-Exchange-Commission">Securities and Exchange Commission</keyword>. </li><li>The <keyword id="6362470" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="sec">SEC</keyword> accused the German-based automobile company of inflating its own reported sales figures by having its North American dealers designate cars as sold when they were actually still on the market.</li><li>This comes after the SEC initially launched an investigation into BMW in December 2019 over concerns it was manipulating its sales figures. </li></ul>Bayerische Motoren Werke AG and two of its subsidiaries have agreed to pay a joint penalty of $18 million to the US Securities and Exchange Commission. The SEC – which launched an investigation into the German automaker in 2019 – concluded that it, along with BMW of North America and BMW US Capital, disclosed inaccurate sales figures while raising nearly $18 billion from corporate bond investors.BMW was accused of practicing what is known in the US as "sales punching" between 2015 and 2019. The SEC <a href="https://www.sec.gov/news/press-release/2020-223">said</a> that the company inflated its own reported retail sales figures by having its North American dealers designate cars as sold when they were actually still on the market. "Companies accessing U.S. markets to raise capital have an obligation to provide accurate information to investors," Stephanie Avakian, Director of the Division of Enforcement at the SEC, <a href="https://www.sec.gov/news/press-release/2020-223">said in a press release.</a> "Through its repeated disclosure failures, BMW misled investors about its U.S. retail sales performance and customer demand for BMW vehicles in the U.S. market while raising capital in the U.S."The SEC said BMW resolved the charges without admitting or denying the claims, which is common practice for these sorts of settlements. BMW's penalty was lowered as a result of its cooperation with the SEC.BMW isn't the first international automobile company to fall into hot water with the SEC. In September 2019, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles agreed to pay <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/fiat-chrysler-to-pay-40m-fine-for-overstating-sales-numbers-2019-9">$40 million</a> to settle claims by the SEC that the company misled investors about its sales figures from 2012 to 2016.

BMW is paying $18 million to settle claims it inflated its car sales

<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="12476268" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="bmw" source="Orion">BMW</keyword> is recalling over 917,000 vehicles over a defect that could cause fires. </li><li>A faulty heating element could short-circuit, BMW said. </li></ul>BMW is recalling nearly 1 million vehicles in the US to fix a faulty component that could cause a fire in the engine compartment. It's the third time BMW has recalled many of these older vehicles for the same issue.In <a href="https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/rcl/2022/RCLRPT-22V119-9377.PDF">documents</a> filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, BMW said the recall includes just over 917,000 vehicles. The automaker estimates that 1% of those vehicles have the defect. The recall encompasses many 3 Series, 5 Series, X3, X5, and Z4 vehicles from the 2006 through the 2013 model years. BMW told <keyword id="12350490" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="nhtsa" source="Orion">NHTSA</keyword> that a component called a blow-by-heater "may not have been produced by the supplier to specifications." As a result, the part can short-circuit and lead to a fire. BMW issued <keyword id="12169755" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="recalls" source="Orion">recalls</keyword> for the same part in 2017 and 2019. Since 2019, it learned of several "thermal events" in the engine compartments of vehicles that had been recalled and fixed. Now BMW is recalling those vehicles again and expanding the recall to include 2012 and 2013 vehicles. The carmaker said it is still developing a fix. Owners will be notified in late April if their vehicle is affected. Owners can also input their VIN number at the NHTSA website to learn if their car is covered by the recall.

If the driver is addressing it, for example, a visual image will appear on-screen closer to the driver. BMW group joins the long list of auto manufacturers to revise the prices of all  models and mini models effective by January 2021

BMW envisions a situation where, for example, if one customer wanted a feature that wasn't requested when they bought the car, it can be added afterward. And if that car came into new ownership with someone else, that new owner could also activate the features that they want. <div type="image" title="2020 BMW Connected Car Beta Days4" height="1414" width="2000" msid="76843936" hostid="261"></div><a href="https://www.cnn.com/2020/07/03/business/bmw-options-software-subscription-features/index.html">CNN</a> better details this subscription service by giving <keyword id="6358815" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="tech">tech</keyword> features — adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assistance, adaptive suspension — and comfort features — a heated steering wheel — as examples."We offer maximum flexibility and peace of mind to our customers when it comes to choosing and using their optional equipment in their BMWs, whether this BMW is new or used," <a href="https://techcrunch.com/2020/07/01/bmw-wants-to-sell-you-subscriptions-to-your-cars-features/">a BMW spokesperson told Techcrunch</a>."In the near future, we will not only be able to add more functions here, but we will also be able to add even more flexibility for our customers with temporary bookings so booking of options for three years, for one year, or even shorter periods of time, like a few months," the spokesperson continued.BMW didn't immediately respond to Business Insider's inquiries of when and in which markets customers can expect these on-demand functions and digital personalization to roll out. According to CNN, the company said that hypothetically a first owner could purchase a three-year subscription to heated seats, which is how long that person would expect to keep the car. Then, the next owner could decide for themselves if they wanted to subscribe to the heated seats, too. This, of course, requires the car to already have the feature's hardware built-in from the factory, such as the required sensors for adaptive cruise control or the heating elements in a seat or steering wheel. BMW casts the idea in a very favorable light in its press release, stating that it is "strengthening selection and personalization for customers, offering them maximum flexibility."Yet, this move can also be seen as the start of major automakers' dangerous slide into the territory of microtransactions. Microtransactions, <a href="https://kotaku.com/in-game-purchases-poison-the-well-1820844066">known and hated in the gaming world as in-game purchases</a>, have infuriated players by essentially charging them more money to enjoy a game they already bought.<div type="image" title="2020 BMW Connected Car Beta Days3" height="1333" width="2000" msid="76843939" hostid="261"></div>This BMW could end up being similar. Your car would have all the necessary hardware already included. You would still pay for the gas to haul it all around. But you would also have to pay BMW a subscription fee just for it to turn the features on. What happens if, after a while, the cost of the subscription outpaces the price of the feature itself? Then you have to consider what happens in the used-car market. Will the new owner also be on the hook for paying for now-outdated hardware? <keyword id="107096" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Tesla">Tesla</keyword> famously offers over-the-air features, but as <a href="https://jalopnik.com/tesla-remotely-removes-autopilot-features-from-customer-1841472617">Jalopnik reported in February</a>, this isn't always a perfect process from owner to owner. All of them were 2017 models, only had a few thousand miles on them, and were priced at less than $18,000. A representative at New Century BMW confirmed to Business Insider that the cars were indeed from the LAPD's fleet, and that the dealership was selling them as CPO models. Some prices were as low as $15,000, which is a steal for a three-year-old, low-mileage CPO BMW <a href="https://www.kbb.com/bmw/i3/2017/#:~:text=The%20Manufacturer's%20Suggested%20Retail%20Price,with%20the%20Range%20Extender%2C%20%2448%2C445.">that had a starting price of more than $43,000</a>. Some had only about 9,000 miles on them.A cursory glance through Autotrader shows 2017 BMW i3s with more miles on them going for a few thousand dollars more. At the time of Friday's writing, there are no more LAPD i3s left for sale. The dealership rep told Business Insider that the store's first shipment of i3s contained 28 cars and all of them sold in four days. <div type="image" title="P90222767_highRes_los angeles police d" height="1667" width="2500" msid="77949945" hostid="261"></div>However, a second shipment will come at some point this month, and the rep said all of the cars would be priced between $15,000 and $18,000. Interested customers must show up in person at the dealership and the cars will be sold on a first-come, first-serve basis. The i3s were part of Los Angeles Mayor <keyword id="277939" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Eric-Garcetti">Eric Garcetti</keyword>'s push to go greener. Despite the good intentions, things didn't go according to plan.The cars didn't wind up doing much of the outreach they were intended for, a <a href="https://losangeles.cbslocal.com/2018/01/16/goldstein-investigation-10-million-lapd-electric-bmws-appear-unused-misused/">CBS Los Angeles investigation</a> from January 2018 found. Instead, they sat, rarely used. If they were used, CBS Los Angeles said they were used for non-police business, such as visiting nail salons and picking folks up for lunch. CBS Los Angeles <a href="https://jalopnik.com/that-fleet-of-electric-cars-the-lapd-paid-at-least-2-9-1822197230">later clarified</a> that, according to numbers it obtained from the LAPD, the entire cost of the i3 and charging-station operation cost $10.2 million, with plans for 300 cars in the fleet.In an emailed response to Business Insider, an LAPD spokesperson said the department is not selling the i3s. Rather, they said the cars' leases had expired and that's why they're being resold by the leasing company."The 50 vehicles were turned in by us at the end of the leasing period per the contract," the spokesperson said.So if you're in the Southern California region and you're looking for a cheap EV, keep your eyes on New Century BMW's inventory list. Owners who don't pay up won't get access, even if their car came with all the necessary hardware from the factory. The move comes as <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/car-feature-subscriptions-add-ons-bmw-ford-toyota-gm-2022-2">car companies push to make more money from the software</a> in their vehicles. Through subscriptions and the like, automakers intend to generate a steady stream of revenue (tens of billions per year, some say) that continues long after a car is made and sold.
