He said construction of metro lines is also progressing well on the airport side. He said the biggest challenge in urban mobility is the integration of multi-modal transport systems and moving people to get into public transport from personalised transport modes. Parwez said urban India was the most neglected area until the 1990s, as urban planning was not in sync with connectivity or mobility issues. He said BMRCL is getting a lot of support from startups in mobility to ensure that commuters have last-mile connectivity. He said the corporation is tying up with mobility providers to get people to reach the nodal point and commute to their workplaces. Parwez said the <keyword id="6367447" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Namma-Metro" source="Orion">Namma Metro</keyword> has recently gone digital with its payment options that include the use of QR code scans and UPI-based payment options which has met with good response from commuters. Also, there is no waiting time for passengers who are in a hurry as there is no need to stand in queues to buy tickets or cards now. He said BMRCL is working on a transit-oriented development where commuters live close to the stations and to the workplace. Besides, the BMRCL also intends to integrate all aggregators by bringing out a mobility card for commuters. He said the corporation is in talks with BMTC to have bus stops at metro stations to help commuters hop on and hop off both modes of transport. He said bike taxis and carpooling should be encouraged although the government of Karnataka had put brakes on their operation. The BMRCL is also working on introducing shopping options for commuters inside and outside the metro stations. He said the BMRCL plans to sell office space in metro stations and provide end-to-end solutions to all the stakeholders. Amit Bhatt, Managing Director of the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT), said urbanisation in India is 33 per cent while it is about 80-85 per cent in European and American countries. He said about 66 per cent of urban infrastructure is yet to be built in India as the country is set to see a number of cities being built. The biggest challenge is to ensure zero emission, zero exclusion and zero accidents in urban transport, he said. Vadiraj Krishnamurthy, Vice President of Technology and Innovation, Bosch Global Software Technologies, said the future is software-defined fully programmable vehicles. "The key enablers of urban transport are personalised multi-modal mobility, automated mobility, electrified and connected mobility. Connecting vehicles using technology is an engineering challenge of the future," he said. Bengaluru metro rail on track to complete 175 km of commute by June 2025: BMRCL MD

In <keyword id="19900881" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="delhi" source="keywords">Delhi</keyword>, Chief Minister Atishi has spearheaded a city-wide initiative to make the capital pothole-free before Diwali. Along with her team, she has conducted inspections across the city, with a plan to repair or rebuild about 1,400 km of roads. This is a response to long-standing complaints about damaged roads that have deteriorated further due to utility work left unfinished. Similarly, after strict orders from Deputy Chief Minister Shivakumar, the <keyword id="19916945" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="bruhat-bengaluru-mahanagara-palike" source="keywords">Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike</keyword> (BBMP) has begun a war effort to repair over 12,000 km of roads using this new technology. <keyword id="19895037" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="bengaluru" source="keywords">Bengaluru</keyword> has also rolled out its "<keyword id="22571639" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="fix-pothole" source="keywords">Fix Pothole</keyword>" app, aiming for a transparent and efficient process to address the city’s road woes. But while these efforts sound like a solution, there are compelling reasons to argue that rapid <keyword id="735732" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="pothole-repair" source="Orion">pothole repair</keyword> may be more problematic than helpful. <h2>A band-aid that is also a safety hazard</h2>One of the key issues is that filling potholes is essentially a "band-aid" solution. Roads often degrade due to structural problems, poor-quality materials, or heavy utility work beneath the surface. For example, in Delhi, much of the road damage is attributed to unfinished work by power companies and the <keyword id="20169378" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="delhi-jal-board" source="keywords">Delhi Jal Board</keyword>. Merely filling potholes without addressing these underlying issues means the repairs are temporary, and potholes will likely reappear — especially if the city does not use good-quality materials for the work. Bengaluru faces similar concerns, where underground utility work is a major cause of road deterioration, leading to a recurring cycle of damage and repair. <div type="Article" hostid="261" msid="113802715" title="Delhi to be pothole-free by end of October, declares Atishi as the CM begins road inspection" mstype="2" mssubtype="0"></div>Further, a quick pothole patch usually doesn’t integrate well with the surrounding road material, leading to uneven surfaces. This inconsistency can make the repaired section more susceptible to further damage. Continuous patchwork repairs degrade the overall quality of the road, reducing its lifespan and necessitating more frequent repairs. Uneven patchwork can also create safety issues for drivers and pedestrians. These bumpy roads can cause accidents, especially in areas with high-speed <keyword id="6361065" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="traffic" source="Orion">traffic</keyword>. Motorists might swerve to avoid patches, increasing the risk of collisions. Poorly done repairs can also create loose gravel or uneven surfaces that may endanger two-wheeler riders. <h2>Ignored drainage issues</h2>Neither city has thoroughly addressed drainage problems. Poor drainage systems contribute heavily to the formation of potholes, especially during monsoon seasons. In Bengaluru — a city that has recently gained notoriety for its famous monsoon flooding — the continuous accumulation of water, combined with the wear and tear from underground cables and pipes, creates the perfect conditions for potholes to form. Delhi, too, is no stranger to drainage issues, particularly in low-lying areas like Ashram Chowk and Okhla. Repairing roads without fixing drainage will result in recurring damage, especially with heavy rains. During the rainy season (and sometimes even otherwise) many of these potholes hazardously fill up with water, making it difficult for motorists to ascertain the depth of the holes. This often leads to accidents where the vehicles and their drivers fall into larger-than-expected potholes, creating an issue that can only be solved once the road’s drainage issues are properly addressed. Further, most Bengalureans understand the joy and fear of a new metro line being announced in their areas. Wherever these lines go, there often follow a trail of roadwork and traffic congestion that strain these roads beyond repair. As BBMP Chief Commissioner <keyword id="23375818" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tushar-guru" source="keywords">Tushar Guru</keyword> Nath explains, “Wherever BMRCL is constructing metro stations, they are acquiring more land and installing pillars, which are damaging our drains. Mud is filling it up, and the entire drainage system needs to be redesigned.” <h2>Misallocation of funds</h2>According to official data, BBMP had spent Rs 7,121 crores over the course of 2019-2022 to fill approximately 24,000 potholes in the city. If you explain this figure to any resident, there is a good chance they would, quite understandably, laugh at you. When asked about these funds, even Tushar Guru Nath seemed confused, noting that there may have been “something wrong in data augmentation”. In Bengaluru, about Rs 33.75 crore has been allocated for pothole repairs across 225 wards the city. While this may seem like a significant investment, it’s arguably a misallocation. Rather than addressing the root causes of road damage — like poor construction standards and lack of oversight — cities are pouring money into short-term fixes. This is a whole lot of money that is going into the exhaustingly non-transparent pipeline, with little coming out the other end. <div type="Article" hostid="261" msid="113733172" title="Hopping signals or using phones when cops aren’t there? While patchwork repairs may be relatively inexpensive, they can certainly add up over time, as the same areas need to be fixed repeatedly. A proper long-term solution would involve overhauling road-building processes, improving drainage, and ensuring that utility work is completed before road resurfacing. <h2>Poor oversight and longer-term accountability</h2>Citizens have little faith in the work that will be carried out to address the pothole problem, even if it may seem like the urgency has been dialled up this time around. Civic activist and road expert Nagesh Aras even alleged that the system has been designed in such an inefficient way that favours the formation of new potholes. “The BBMP always blames the rains, but though the civic body has adopted the Indian Road Congress (IRS) guidelines, it has only remained on paper,” Aras told the media. “The civic body is guilty of approving road works of bad quality. Even pothole filling is done unscientifically.” Both cities have introduced technological solutions to track potholes and repairs, but the effectiveness of such measures remains in question. Bengaluru’s previous app, "Fix My Street," was largely ineffective due to poor oversight, and there’s scepticism about whether the new "Fix Pothole" app will be any different. Similarly, while Delhi’s repair drive has a detailed plan, it’s unclear whether there will be robust monitoring of quality and whether repairs will last beyond a single season. While the ambition to fix potholes in Delhi and Bengaluru is commendable, these efforts are likely to fall short without addressing deeper structural and infrastructural problems. Instead of focusing on short-term fixes, a more sustainable solution would be to invest in better road construction, drainage systems, and long-term planning to prevent potholes from forming in the first place. Otherwise, these cities might find themselves caught in a cycle of perpetual repair.

The residents at many locations have had severe inconvenience as water entered their houses. Many vehicles were left stranded on the roads due to waterlogging. The funds will be used to scale up its fleet, and battery swapping network capacity by 10 times each, in the next 12 months. “We can clearly see a 100X growth opportunity for Yulu in both the BaaS and MaaS businesses in the next three-four years. We will go deeper and denser in our existing markets and explore new areas while delivering a great customer experience,” Amit Gupta, co-founder &amp; CEO, Yulu (Bikes) said. Yulu also aims to increase its EV fleet to more than one lakh electric 2-wheelers along with over 500 battery charging and swapping stations within the same timeframe. Yulu is forming a new entity, <keyword id="14959361" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="yulu-energy" source="Orion">Yulu Energy</keyword>, with Magna to create nation-wide battery charging and swapping infrastructure. Electric mobility startup Yulu raises $82 million in Series B funding

The state-run <keyword id="6355033" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="bangalore">Bangalore</keyword> <keyword id="6356415" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Metro">Metro</keyword> Rail Corporation Ltd (BMRCL) is ready to resume its services in the tech city amid Covid pandemic, an official said on Wednesday. "We are waiting for the Central government's clearance to resume operations on east-west and north-south routes in compliance with the standard operating procedures (SOPs) of the Union Ministry of Home Affairs and guidelines of the Union Health Ministry to ensure the safety of commuters," the official told IANS. Like other state-run transport firms, Namma Metro too suspended its services since March 25, when the lockdown was suddenly enforced and extended, forcing thousands of commuters to switch over to alternative modes of transport. "Though limited bus, train and plane services were allowed to resume gradually during the three-phases of unlocking, regular express/mail passenger trains and metro rail services remained suspended to prevent crowding in public places and the virus spread," said the official. As the most popular transport mode for its punctual, efficient and cleaner service in air-conditioned coaches, the metro has been ferrying more than four lakh commuters on the twin routes, covering 42.3 km across 44 well-lit stations till pre-Covid days. "As social distancing has to be maintained, the guidelines may limit the number of commuters to one-third of the capacity in a six-coach train, that in normal times carries nearly 1,000 people per trip," the official observed. To ensure the commuters are virus-free, they will be screened at the entrance and advised to keep wearing mask throughout the journey for their safety and that of others. "As most of the commuters use smartphones, they will be advised to download the 'Aarogya Setu' application (app) for contact tracing in the event of any of them getting infected by the virus," the official added. All commuters will be advised to use e-tickets in the form of a smart card for entry and exit from the metro stations to minimise contact with tokens. "We are hoping the government to permit resuming <keyword id="63449" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Metro-services">metro services</keyword> in a phased manner under the guidelines to ensure the safety of commuters and the staff as restrictions on inter-state and intra-state travel have been lifted across the country," the official said. As a joint venture between the state and Centre, the operator has incurred Rs 300 crore loss over the last five months due to the suspension of its services to contain the pandemic.

And the app declares them "safe". As cities get unlocked and people begin to visit markets, eating joints, malls and other public places, this attitude is worrisome as this does not paint the real picture, especially if someone who is an asymptomatic Covid patient visits public places even with the 'safe' app tag on. "I only update the app while visiting the complex and leave it without any use for days. It surprises me that it is so easy to just fill in wrong details and enter wherever you want with the 'you are safe' tag," Kumar told IANS. Kumar said he has even seen people who are not aware of the Aarogya Setu app, downloading it right in front of the complex, filling the self-assessment form quickly with 'None of the Above' symptoms and entering the premises, only to remove the app later. According to latest data from app intelligence company Sensor Tower, Aarogya Setu downloads have decreased significantly in the country, as much as 90 per cent less last month compared to April when it was launched with much fanfare. As Delhi Metro resumed services after more than five months due to Covid-19 restrictions, officials in some stations, including Noida Sector 16, were seen trying to block entry of people into the station for not having "Aarogya Setu" app on their mobile phones during the initial trial phase. This despite the fact that in the new travel protocol for passengers published by Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) on September 3, it mentioned that "the use of 'Aarogya Setu App' for updating health status by passengers will be advisable." However, as the services gathered full steam, passengers have hardly reported facing any questions about having the app on the smartphones. The decision of Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (BMRCL) to make Aarogya Setu mandatory for metro commuters was brought to Karnataka High Court's notice this month after legal services organisation SFLC.IN's <keyword id="61253" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="advisory-board">advisory board</keyword> member Anivar A. Aravind filed a petition challenging the voluntary-mandatory nature of Aarogya Setu and invasion of privacy rights in the absence of a specific legislation governing data collected by it. Meanwhile, security guards at several outlets in shopping malls across the country are allowing entry only after visitors show they have the app downloaded on their mobile phones. A similar experience was reported by Aasheesh when he tried to visit a Lifestyle outlet at the City Centre Mall at Sector 10, Rohini in New Delhi. Visitors to government offices have also reported that they were allowed to enter the offices only after downloading the app. However, the biggest question is: Is it worthwhile to track people with Covid? "Several people in my localities have stopped using the app or removed it altogether as it at times creates panic, in case if the person was near a Covid-19 patient. The lack of proper guidance and right messaging, people have started to shun the app, including me," Nidhi Dixit from West Delhi told IANS. Aarogya Setu was developed by the <keyword id="6373306" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="national-informatics-centre">National Informatics Centre</keyword> under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) as the country's Bluetooth-based contact tracing app, with an objective of mapping of likely hotspots and dissemination of relevant information about Covid-19. The app utilises the data provided by users, to track if you may have come in close contact with a Covid-positive person via Bluetooth and location generated social graphs. It uses contact tracing to record details of all the people you may have come in contact with during normal activities.
