Going vegan for eight weeks was found to be linked to lowering <keyword id="20730859" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="biological-age" source="keywords">biological age</keyword>, according to a study published in the journal BioMed Central (BMC) Medicine. Researchers looked at the molecular effects of the <keyword id="20041126" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="plant-based-diet" source="keywords">plant-based diet</keyword> that abstains from consuming animal food products, such as dairy. The diet largely includes eating fruits and vegetables, along with grains, beans and nuts. The researchers, including those at <keyword id="20089812" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Stanford-University" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Stanford University" meta.hostid="83" meta.entityid="Stanford University">Stanford University</keyword>, US, found that consuming the plant-based diet was related with changes in how a gene expressed itself, or gene behaviour, without changing the DNA itself. Specifically, they looked at <keyword id="21419638" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="DNA-methylation" source="keywords">DNA methylation</keyword>, known to be able to "turn off" or "silence" a gene, thereby not allowing it to express itself. Higher levels of DNA methylation is associated with a higher biological age. It is one of the epigenetic processes, which affect the behaviour of a gene by altering its environment. For eight weeks, the team followed 21 pairs of adult identical twins -- one half of each pair consumed an omnivorous diet, including meat, eggs and dairy, while the other consumed a vegan one. Identical twins share a significant amount of their genetic makeup. On average, the participants were aged 40 years and had a body mass index (BMI) in the overweight category. About 77% of the group were women. After eight weeks, the researchers observed a 'younger' heart, liver, inflammatory and metabolic system among the participants consuming the <keyword id="20703587" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="vegan-diet" source="keywords">vegan diet</keyword>. These changes were not seen in those eating the omnivorous diet. However, the authors cautioned that the extent to which these changes could be attributed to their diets was unclear. They noted that on average, the individuals on the vegan diet lost two kilograms more compared to those on the omnivorous diet. The results suggest that the weight loss could have contributed to lowering of the biological age in the vegan group, the researchers said. Reacting to the study, Tom Sanders, a professor emeritus of Nutrition and Dietetics at King's College London, and not involved in the study, said that the findings might be favourable for vegans in terms of ageing. However, the diet can come with <keyword id="21204758" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="micronutrient-deficiencies" source="keywords">micronutrient deficiencies</keyword>, which often take years to exert harmful effects, Sanders said. "For example, unless a vegan diet is supplemented with vitamin B12 they develop vitamin B12 deficiency that causes chronic and often insidious damage to the nervous system," Sanders said. Long-term studies of vegans also find adverse effects on bone density, probably caused by very low calcium and barely adequate protein intakes, Sanders said.

Portion of under-construction flyover crashes in Mumbai, 14 injured

Citing the COVID-19 situation, police on Thursday imposed orders under CrPC <keyword id="6382007" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Section-144" source="Orion">section 144</keyword> in <keyword id="6358070" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mumbai" source="Orion">Mumbai</keyword>, prohibiting assembly of five or more persons during the <keyword id="6527887" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ganesh-festival" source="Orion">Ganesh festival</keyword> between September 10 to 19. No processions of any kind would be allowed in the city during this period and devotees would not be allowed to visit Ganesh pandals either, an official statement said. All prominent Ganesh mandals would be offering the online 'darshan' facility, police said. Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure empowers the authorities to issue prohibitory orders for preventive purposes. The Maharashtra home department had issued a circular the day before banning visits to pandals so as to prevent the spread of the viral infection. Mumbai on Wednesday recorded 530 new coronavirus cases, highest since mid-July. The order issued by Deputy Commissioner of Police S Chaitanya referred to the directives of the home department as well as the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (<keyword id="48434" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="BMC" source="Orion">BMC</keyword>). In a significant finding, a sero-survey conducted by the <keyword id="53938" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Brihanmumbai-Municipal-Corporation">BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation</keyword> (<keyword id="48434" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="BMC">BMC</keyword>) has revealed that 50 per cent of the pediatric population in <keyword id="6358070" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="mumbai">Mumbai</keyword> has developed <keyword id="9387280" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="covid-19-antibodies">Covid-19 antibodies</keyword>, ahead of the anticipated third wave of the pandemic, a top official said here on Monday. BMC Commissioner I.S. Chahal said that even the proportion of the pediatric population having antibodies has shown an increase, as per the survey, the fourth of its kind conducted between April 1 and June 15. While the sero-positivity is highest -- 53.43 per cent -- in the 10-14 age group, it is 51.04 per cent for 1-4, 47.33 per cent for 5-9 and 51.39 per cent for 15-18 age groups. The overall sero-positivity is 51.18 per cent, comprising 54.36 per cent in the public sector and 47.03 per cent in the private sector, indicating that more than half the pediatric population in a healthcare setting have already been exposed to <keyword id="8858345" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="sars-cov-2">SARS-COV-2</keyword>, said Chahal. The survey was conducted by a team of doctors comprising Jayanthi Shastri, Sachee Agrawal, Gargi Kakani, Surbhi Rathi, Ramesh Bharmal, Chandrakant Pawar, Kusum Jashnani and Gayathri Amonkar, under the supervision of Chahal and Additional Municipal Commissioner Suresh Kakani. As compared to the Sero-survey 3 in March, which showed a sero-positivity of 39.04 per cent in the under-18 age group, there is a noticeable increase (51.18 per cent) in the latest survey, conducted jointly by BMC's <keyword id="6548875" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="BYL-Nair-Hospital">BYL Nair Hospital</keyword> and Kasturba Molecular Diagnostic Laboratory (KMDL). A total of 2,176 blood samples were made available from the samples received by various public (1,283) and private laboratories (893) and sent to the KMDL for analysis, against the backdrop of the imminent danger of the Covid 'third wave' to the pediatric population. The heartening outcome indicates that over 50 per cent of the pediatric population has antibodies to Covid-19 and the proportion has also increased as compared to the previous survey, amid apprehensions that the 'third wave' could affect the vulnerable youngsters in the below 18 age groups, against the higher ages that were hit in the previous two waves.
