The crimes against women have been rampantly increasing in India. It is thus essential that we take urgent measures to safeguard women in the country. But how do we do it? By increasing police posts or enabling special forces for the task? While these are some of the alternatives, what can really do wonders is: if youths change their mindset towards women and start respecting them.<br />
<br /> Keeping this in mind, Anurag Thakur, president of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (<keyword id="73679" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="BJYM">BJYM</keyword>) and a member of the Lok Sabha, had launched a nationwide campaign ‘Honour Our Women’ (HOW Foundation) last year. HOW foundation, is “an initiative to provide a platform for all those who are individually working towards the safety of women and to constructively make a difference in the lives of about 49% of our population.” It works on the ethos of Thakur’s slogan “Soch Badlo, <keyword id="2612591" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Desh-Badlega">Desh Badlega</keyword>.” The foundation strives to involve the youth and change their mindset about women that they are not just objects.<br />
<br /> In Anurag Thakur’s words, “The HOW initiative is a befitting tribute to one woman who lost her life, but awakened a million others. A year back, when thousands of men and women came on the streets in protest, they were not just demanding justice for Nirbhaya, but they also wanted a guarantee that there will not be any more Nirbhaya cases ever again. But despite new laws and all the policing, cases of rape and <keyword id="6363203" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Crime-against-women">crime against women</keyword> were seen to be on rise.”<br />

So, How does ‘HOW’ work? It organises talks, counselling sessions, panel discussions, street shows etc in order to communicate about the cause. The foundation hasn’t even completed one year, but it already has various teams working dedicatedly in Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab and Delhi. It also invites ideas from school and college students on how to make a difference through creative projects like drama and arts to engage the general public. Under this initiative, it involves educational institutions for conducting street plays and holding panel discussions on various issues related to the safety of women. It also imparts self-defense training to women to make them strong enough to be able to stand up for themselves.<br />

In an interview to <a href="http://blogs.wsj.com/indiarealtime/2013/12/19/bjp-youth-leader-we-need-to-change-mindsets/">The Wall Street Journal</a>, Thakur had said, “I think it’s all about morality, it’s about mindset. If you still think of a woman as an object, or if men think they can do anything and get away with it, nothing will change. People in our country like to hold a candle and do a march. But that’s for a day and then we get busy with our routine lives.”<br />

The group has several upcoming events lined up in the next ten days: A street show against female foeticide at the Mall, Shimla(on November 25th, 2014) and HOW Talk at the DNS School, Jalandhar (on 2<sup>nd</sup> December, 2014).<br />

<p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><ul class="summary-list"><li><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/claires">Claire's</a> is under fire for its policies on piercing non-consenting children's ears.&#xa0;</li><li>A former employee said that that she was told by a manager that she was expected to pierce the ears of protesting children, even if the child needed to be physically restrained by a parent.&#xa0;&#xa0;</li><li>Claire's said in a statement that employees can refuse to pierce children's ears, but did not provide Business Insider with any guidelines as to how workers decide when they should or should not complete piercings.&#xa0;</li><li><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/?hprecirc-bullet">Visit BusinessInsider.com for more stories.&#xa0;</a></li></ul><p>Claire's, a retailer geared at young girls and teens, is under fire for its murky ear piercing polices.&#xa0;</p><p>On Sunday, Raylene Marks published an <a href="https://www.facebook.com/notes/raylene-marks/an-open-letter-to-claires-corporate/10158352387633989/">open letter to Claire's,</a> her former employer, about the company's ear piercing policies.</p><p>According to Marks, she quit her job at an Edmonton, Alberta, area Claire's location after being told by her manager that she would be expected to pierce a child's ears, even if the child protested and had to be physically restrained.&#xa0;</p><p>"I had a couple 'gray area' piercings ... where the children resisted heavily, were pressured and intimidated by the parents into settling down, and the children weren't happy with what had happened even after the earrings were in place and the standard lollipop had been dispensed," Marks writes.&#xa0;</p><p>Recently, Marks said she was supposed to pierce the ears of a seven-year-old girl who was actively resisting having her ears pierced.&#xa0;</p><p>"She made it clear she no longer wanted to get her ears pierced," Marks writes. "She begged, over and over again, for Mom to please, just take her home. That child's message was loud and clear to me: Do not touch my body, do not pierce my ears, I do not want to be here."&#xa0;</p><p>Marks said she wouldn't help pierce the child's ears. Ultimately, the girl's mother agreed not to go through with the piercing and took her daughter home.&#xa0;</p><p>After the incident, Marks spoke with her manager about what to do if the mother had insisted. According to Marks, her manager said she would have "no choice" but to pierce the child's ears.&#xa0;</p><p>"I wanted to know how far we were supposed to take this policy of piercing non-consenting children," Marks writes. "'So if a mother is physically restraining her daughter, holding her down and saying, 'DO IT,' while that little girl cries and asks me not to, do I do the piercing?' Doing older children who were prepared, or adults, was fine, but kids who didn't want it, and usually was the parent who wanted it done, was heartbreaking, and I felt awful," <a href="https://www.facebook.com/notes/raylene-marks/an-open-letter-to-claires-corporate/10158352387633989/">reads one comment on Marks' post.&#xa0;</a></p><p>"This teaches a child that their refusing consent to be touched means nothing," <a href="https://www.facebook.com/notes/raylene-marks/an-open-letter-to-claires-corporate/10158352387633989/">reads another.</a> "Think of the precedent that sets for other contact in their lives. Thank you for doing what is right by that little girl and all the children that come in these stores."&#xa0;</p><p>Claire's told Business Insider in a statement that customer well-being is the company's "main priority," and that all children's piercings are carried out with the agreement of the legal guardian.&#xa0;</p><p>"In relation to the ear piercing incident involving the former employee Raylene Marks, we believe she acted appropriately and in line with our policy by refusing to do the piercing," Claire's said in a statement. "The policy is in place to ensure that if a child is distressed or resisting, Claire's employees have the right to refuse to continue the piercing."</p><p>Claire's did not respond to Business Insider's question as to whether employees are given guidelines regarding when they should refuse to complete piercings.&#xa0;</p><p>"We are investigating the specific store instances she mentions, and will take appropriate corrective action," the statement continued. In an address telecast on his personal NaMo application, <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword> <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/politics-and-nation/pm-modi-warns-bjp-legislators-against-making-out-of-turn-statements/articleshow/63869881.cms" data-type="tilCustomLink">told</a> his party motormouths, “We make mistakes and give 'masala' to the media... as if we are great social scientists and experts to analyse issues... the moment you see a camera you start speaking. The rest of the post read: “I feel pity while looking at that woman journalist. She claims she was disturbed because the governor touched her. But when you read her tweets, it is understood that her intention was to target the Governor and Modi. It is actually the governor who has to wash his hands with Phenoyl after touching her. These (TN media persons) are cheap and disgusting creatures. Most people who work in the media in TN are usually Illiterate, cheap and don’t have any general knowledge. This woman is not any different.” </li><li><strong>BJP MP <keyword id="6462806" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Vinay-Katiyar">Vinay Katiyar</keyword> believes Muslims have "no business" to be in India.</strong> Here’s what he had to <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/politics-and-nation/muslims-have-no-business-to-be-in-india-bjp-mp-katiyar/articleshow/62823901.cms">say</a>: "Muslims should not be staying in India.
