The move aims to prevent undesired delays by streamlining preparations for the assembly elections due in a few months, BJP's Mumbai unit chief <keyword id="6367689" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ashish-Shelar" source="Orion">Ashish Shelar</keyword> told reporters on Sunday. <br /><br />"The core committee (of the state unit) has met in Mumbai to delegate all decision-making powers concerning seat-sharing and the selection of assembly constituencies to Fadnavis," he said. <br /><br />Party observer and Union minister Bhupender Yadav, BJP national secretary Vinod Tawde, Union minister and Mumbai North MP Piyush Goyal also attended the meeting. <br /><br />Of the 288 assembly seats in Maharashtra, the BJP won 104 in 2019. <br /><br />Shelar confirmed finalisation of the "formula for winning, besides the planning and seat-sharing arrangements with the allies". <br /><br />"Fadnavis has been granted full authority in this regard," he said. <br /><br />The BJP-led Mahayuti, also comprising Chief Minister Eknath Shinde's Shiv Sena and the NCP headed by Ajit Pawar, won only 17 of the 48 Lok Sabha seats in the state in the recent parliamentary polls. If this trend holds, a majority government will form with BJP-led NDA acquiring slightly below 300 seats, almost mirroring exact forecasts by on-ground reporters and some political experts. However, this is quite in contrast with almost all exit polls this election season.<br /><br />If the scorecard settles at the current mark, this will end up becoming the poorest performance for NDA since their historic win in 2014. The alliance came to power after winning an overwhelming 336 seats in 2014, and 353 seats in 2019.<br /><br />However, the main point of shock has come from the performance of Congress and the INDIA bloc, who have maintained a steadfast 200+ seats since the initial polling rounds. Out of the nine odd exit polls that came out with results recently, none had predicted the INDIA bloc to win over 150-170 seats.<br /><br />As the tallying moves into its final phases, let’s look at how exit polls performed in the previous election cycles.<br /><cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="2014 elections" comment="subhead" text="2014 elections"><span data-til="noop">2014 elections</span></cmsannotation><br />In 2014, 834 million voters participated in the largest-ever elections worldwide — only to be surpassed by the 2019 <keyword id="19895394" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="lok-sabha" source="keywords">Lok Sabha</keyword> elections. An average of eight exit polls had indicated that the BJP would see a 283-seat victory, while the opposition would have had to settle for 105 seats.<br /><br />Just as predicted, the BJP saw a landslide victory and swooped in 282 of the 543 seats, with a vote percentage of 31.3%. This win was a huge blow to the INC, which only won 44 seats compared to the 206 in 2009. Since a party must win at least 55 seats to become an official opposition party in India, the Congress’s defeat meant that there was no official opposition party for India.<br /><cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="2019 elections" comment="subhead" text="2019 elections"><span data-til="noop">2019 elections</span></cmsannotation><br />The previous Lok Sabha elections turned out to be an even bigger win for the BJP! In 2019, exit polls had predicted that the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance would peak at 306 and that the INC-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) would win just 120.<br /><br />However, the post-poll statistics turned out to be underwhelming. The BJP won a whopping 37.36% of the vote — the highest by a political party since the 1989 general elections. It won 303 seats, while the NDA collectively won 352 seats. It was another crushing defeat for the Congress, which won just 52 seats, failing to claim the post of Leader of the Opposition once again.<br />

India Today gave leads in 205 seats to the NDA, while the INDIA bloc was ahead in 129; ABP News gave 230 to the NDA and 120 to the opposition alliance; and NDTV showed NDA leading in 194 seats with INDIA bloc closing in on 135 seats. <br /><br />Counting of votes for the <keyword id="56978" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Lok-Sabha-elections" source="Orion">Lok Sabha elections</keyword> has begun across states and Union Territories, Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar told PTI. <br /><br />According to the Conduct of Election Rules, postal ballots were taken up for counting first and the process of counting of votes recorded in electronic voting machines (EVMs) began 30 minutes later. <br /><br />The process of counting votes cast through postal ballots and EVMs will continue simultaneously.<br /><br /><div type="javascript" title="Custom" contenttype="Infographic"><cdata><![CDATA[]]></cdata></div><br />While the Lok Sabha has 543 members, counting is being held for 542 seats after the BJP's Surat candidate Mukesh Dalal was elected unopposed. <br /><br />Counting of votes is also underway for the assembly polls in Andhra Pradesh and Odisha, where polling was held simultaneously with the Lok Sabha elections. <br /><br />Elections to the assemblies of Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim were also held alongside the Lok Sabha polls. The results of these elections were declared on June 2. <br /><br />Since 2019, VVPAT (voter verifiable paper audit trail) slips from five randomly selected polling stations per assembly constituency -- or segment in case of Lok Sabha seats -- are matched with the EVM count for greater transparency.

Now, Meta has come under fire again for a similar role in promoting political polarisation during <keyword id="19895063" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="India" source="keywords">India</keyword>'s ongoing <keyword id="19895394" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="lok-sabha" source="keywords">Lok Sabha</keyword> <keyword id="19900767" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="elections" source="keywords">elections</keyword>.<br /><br />A recent research report by the corporate accountability group Ekō, in collaboration with India Civil Watch International, has revealed alarming shortcomings in Meta's ability to detect and block <keyword id="21749265" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="AI-generated-ads" source="keywords">AI-generated ads</keyword> that promote <keyword id="20028741" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="hate-speech" source="keywords">hate speech</keyword>, election disinformation, and incitement to violence. These findings are particularly concerning given the critical election period in India, which several experts have termed as the most important Lok Sabha elections in recent times.<br /><cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Infiltrating election silence periods" comment="subhead" text="Infiltrating election silence periods"><span data-til="noop">Infiltrating election silence periods</span></cmsannotation><br />The investigation, spanning the third and fourth phases of India's seven-phase election, targeted 189 contentious constituencies during the election's 48-hour "silence period." However, researchers found that Meta failed to enforce these restrictions, allowing the dissemination of harmful political advertising, mainly by the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (<keyword id="14666" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="bjp" source="Orion">BJP</keyword>).<br /><cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Type of ads approved by Meta" comment="subhead" text="Type of ads approved by Meta"><span data-til="noop">Type of ads approved by Meta</span></cmsannotation><br />Between May 8-13, the study organisations received publishing approvals for 14 self-submitted highly inflammatory advertisements, meaning that Meta’s auto-check systems were unable to pick up on the posts’ disturbing content. These ads contained violent rhetoric anywhere from targeting Muslim minorities, spreading disinformation by exploiting communal conspiracy theories, and inciting violence through Hindu supremacist narratives. One ad even mimicked a recent AI-doctored video of Home Minister Amit Shah, which had recently gained enough notoriety to sanction arrests of some opposition party members. <br /><br />The approved ads were placed in English, Hindi, Bengali, Gujarati and Kannada, and mimicked or exaggerated existing Hindu-supremacist propaganda, such as:<br /><ul><li>Ads targeting BJP opposition parties with accusations of Muslim favouritism</li><li>Dog whistles about Muslim “invaders” and calls for violence against <keyword id="20024988" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Muslims" source="keywords">Muslims</keyword></li><li>Narratives claiming electronic voting machine tampering, calling for uprisings</li><li>Hindu supremacist language and calls for burning Muslims</li><li>A call for executing a lawmaker accused of Pakistani allegiance</li><li>Disinformation about affirmative action policies</li></ul>Each ad featured manipulated images created using common AI tools such as Stable Diffusion, <keyword id="20004545" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="midjourney" source="keywords">Midjourney</keyword>, and Dall-e, highlighting how easily AI can amplify harmful content.<br /><br />This news comes despite Meta’s earlier announcements to detect and label AI-generated content to protect the electoral process. Of the total 22 provocative ads that had been submitted to the platform, 14 were reportedly approved within 24 hours, despite them all breaching Meta’s own policies on hate speech, misinformation, and violence.<br /><cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Exploiting Meta's weaknesses" comment="subhead" text="Exploiting Meta's weaknesses"><span data-til="noop">Exploiting Meta's weaknesses</span></cmsannotation><br />The research also highlighted vulnerabilities in Meta’s automated ad review system. Even in the rare chance that these ads were flagged by the platform, slightly adjusting the content was enough to bypass Meta’s scrutiny, the researchers found. This reveals how easily bad actors can exploit Meta’s platform to spread disinformation and incite violence.<br /><br />Civil society groups, both in India and internationally, have called on Meta to enforce stricter measures during elections, emphasising the need for transparency and accountability.
