The college is back with its 13th edition of <keyword id="4377674" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Conquest-2017">Conquest 2017</keyword>, which serves as a launchpad for your startup and entrepreneurial dreams. 
 
Conquest offers one-on-one mentoring sessions with industry leaders, investing and fundraising opportunities, networking sessions with corporate moguls, equity-less funding and resources worth $1 million. 
 
Last year, Conquest 2016 saw over 1200 applications from startups all across Asia during which people got a learning opportunity. 
 
Nilesh Kothari, co-founder at Trifecta Capital, who was a jury member in Conquest 2016 said, “Every year, I’m quite impressed by the quality of the teams and startups present here. It gives youngsters an opportunity to engage and learn new things. I think it’s... really great.” 
 
Conquest 2017 seeks to assist startups from tier 2 and tier 3 cities and provides them an opportunity to be at par with ventures across the globe. This year, Conquest also eyes startups overseas, gearing up to help them with its vast inventory of resources and opportunities. 
 
Over the years, Conquest has produced some of the best startups in India, including Gamezop, iTraveller, PosterGully, GharPay (Acquired by Delhivery), Social Cops, Voonik, etc. 
 
Gamezop, the runners up for Conquest 2015, raised a funding of $350,000, and the founders were featured in Forbes 30 under 30 in 2016. Social Cops, a Conquest 2013 participant, was among the 35 start-ups from India selected for the first India-U.S. Startup Konnect at Silicon Valley.

1. Participants have to fill a form on the Conquest website. Registrations close on April 20. For registering, visit www.conquest.org.in. 
 
2. The Conquest Jury, a panel of entrepreneurs and investors, will screen the applications based on various parameters gauging the start-up performance. 
 
3. The semi-finalists would get personalized mentoring across five major cities in India, wherein the teams will be offered to choose their own mentors. Finally, a networking lunch with industrialists and a pitching opportunity to Indian VC firms will commemorate the Grand Finale.

BITS Pilani’s international startup challenge ‘Conquest 2017’ is back. Get ready to be mentored by experts, funding of $1 million on offer

JAIPUR: Technology and e-commerce players have taken the lead over companies in core industries during the campus placements at the Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS)-Pilani. And <keyword id="6355629" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Google">Google</keyword> has offered an annual package of Rs 1.40 crore to students selected this year, sources said. The institute hopes to break its last year record of Rs 1.44 crore, offered to one of its students by <keyword id="6354576" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Facebook">Facebook</keyword>. 
 With companies such as Linkedln, <keyword id="10387" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Microsoft">Microsoft</keyword>, Flipkart, Schlumberger, <keyword id="6361649" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Goldman-Sachs">Goldman Sachs</keyword> and <keyword id="18635" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Amazon">Amazon</keyword> also visiting the campus, students eye big offers. All these companies have increased their compensation offer by 5-25%, indicating a better job scenario. 
 
The BITS placement session for 2014 started off with Google, which conducted its first round (written) on August 18 at the Pilani campus. The company's HR team is slated to visit India in the first week of September. 
 "A good number of students sat for the first round. We hope that a few of our students will make to the final selection," said G Balasubramanium, chief <keyword id="199325" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="placement-officer">placement officer</keyword> at BITS-Pilani. 
 
This year, 2,300 BITS students are eligible for campus placements — 53 were placed in two days, with the highest domestic package of Rs 23.5 lakh. Microsoft and Schlumberger have also shortlisted students. Both have offered more than Rs 70-lakh annual package to BITS students. 
 
Overall, BITS has placed 150 students at its three centres — Pilani, Goa and Hyderabad. In Goa and Hyderabad, the placement session started on August 13. Facebook, which visited BITS for three consecutive years till last year and offered the highest package in 2013, is not scheduled to visit the campus this year. 
 
The placement officer admitted that attracting these big companies wouldn't have been possible without the support of the alumni who have a wide network among companies. The institute is confident that by the end of April 2015, 100% students will get placements.

Many students here have opted out of placement session to open their own startups. Balasubramanium said among those who opted out of placement sessions, 10 have already started their companies, mostly in IT and communication.

Google Offers Rs 1.4 Crore Pay At BITS-Pilani

Kota, Feb 2 () Researchers are working on two electric vehicle solutions, including a technology that would allow sharing of stored battery power with another EV and even sell excess energy to make a fast buck, for making the clean vehicles more economical, a professor at <keyword id="6442381" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="bits-pilani">BITS Pilani</keyword> said. Along with the power sharing tool vehicle-to-everything (V2X), researchers are also examining the feasibility of battery swapping stations where an EV owner would simply replace the batteries like refilling of gas cylinders, <keyword id="8706186" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Hitesh-Datt-Mathur">Hitesh Datt Mathur</keyword>, associate professor at the Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS), Pilani, said. The two solutions can make EVs economical as customers would not need to buy expensive heavy batteries which account for around 25-30 per cent of the total cost of an EV currently.
 The research projects are sponsored by the <keyword id="201062" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="department-of-science">Department of Science</keyword> and Technology and the Ministry of Human Resource Development. Mathur, who has designed an EV with V2X technology, said the model is capable of sharing stored power with another EV, a grid, hotels, malls etc. 
 "The incentive could be seen by an example where a customer is charging EV with V2X feature at home at Rs 8 per unit and discharging some part of stored power at any commercial place at Rs 15 as commercial rates are higher than domestic rates of electricity," he suggested.
 When the EV is not in use, some part of stored energy may be sold to others including the grid, another EV customer, even to some offices or homes.
 If a customer sells 20 units equivalent of power during this discharge, he will have Rs 140 earned. The power grid, at large, during peak hour, can also be supplemented by orderly managed owners of EVs with V2X feature.
 "One can imagine a parking lot of a mall where, hundreds of V2X electric cars are parked for more than 6-7 hours in a day which is equivalent to a mid-sized power plant of 5 to 10 megawatt range since each electric car has battery power of 20-25 kilowatts. Even if 30-40 per cent customers decide to sell power to grid, it would be good enough for that mall itself. All this would be executed through a mobile app," he said.
 "The project will develop a cyber physical network using artificial intelligence and machine learning algorithms," Mathur said. 
 However, the project faces some challenges, he said. The associated infrastructure at various commercial and non-commercial places to enable V2X EVs is a great challenge. 
 Developing battery swapping stations (BSS) is another aspect of the project as it would make EVs with V2X feature affordable because one does not have to buy a battery of EV that costs approximately 25-30 per cent of the total cost of the vehicle, Mathur said. 
 "This would just be like the refilling of gas cylinders we use. The opening of BSS has a huge commercial opportunity and many private players can be given option to open a BSS (similar to petrol pumps)," he added.

A BITS Pilani professor claims his students have found a way to EVs affordable

Teams from <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=BITS+Pilani&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">BITS Pilani</a>, <keyword id="61708" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="IIT-Bombay">IIT Bombay</keyword> and <keyword id="3335295" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="IIT-Varanasi">IIT Varanasi</keyword> were the winners at the 2nd edition of '<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Ericsson+India&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Ericsson</a> Innovation Awards India' held at the IIT Delhi on Friday. <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Ericsson+India&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Ericsson India</a> offered the three winning teams financial support of Rs 13 lakhs each towards incubating them. 
 
The projects were submitted by students in areas such as web design, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=cloud+computing&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">cloud computing</a>, storage and networking, human-machine interface, embedded and hardware system design, MIMO (multiple-input, multiple-output), machine-to-machine/<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Internet+of+Things&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Internet of Things</a>, software-defined networking, open source, signal processing, graphics and visualization, as well as research. 
 
Each shortlisted proposal was given an incentive by <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Ericsson&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Ericsson</a> to complete the initial prototype within two months. The winning projects were selected by the Jury in front of an audience comprising of students, faculty, innovators and industry leaders. 
 
Here are the ideas that took the cake: 
 
<keyword id="6442381" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="BITS-Pilani">BITS Pilani</keyword>: This project was about using GAIT for human recognition. Its an alternative way to the currently established system based on face, fingerprint and iris and the students claim it can’t be spoofed or hacked. 
 
IIT Bombay: These students developed Li-Fi beacons. The product is basically a simple LED light source which can be connected to a receiver that can transmit dta in real time at a couple of GB/sec. 
 
IIT Varanasi: The IIT Varanasi team is working on a smart helmet which can be integrated with a two wheeler which - will keeps both the driver as well as the vehicle safe and secure by making it mandatory for the driver to put on the helmet and have a permissible alcohol breath level so as to be able to start the vehicle. 
 
<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Ericsson+India&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Ericsson</a> in association with the Foundation for Innovation and Technology Transfer (FITT) had organised this contest. It was kicked off in 2014 to promote innovation within engineering students at select IITs. 
 
This year the Awards have been rolled out to IITs across Delhi, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Mumbai, Roorkee, Guwahati, Bhubaneswar, Mandi, Hyderabad as well as IISc Bangalore, BITS Pilani, IIIT Gwalior, IIIT Delhi, Banaras Hindu University (BHU) in Varanasi.

E-commerce companies, especially start-ups are going to find it difficult to hire engineering graduates from leading Indian institutes, since the placement teams at these institutes have decided to go strict after some start-ups failed to deliver on the offers they had made in last placement seasons. 
 
Placement teams at institutes, like Birla Institute of Technology &amp; Science (BITS) Pilani University and Delhi Technological University (DTU) told ET that for the coming placement seasons, they would be turning extra vigilant and introduce stringent background checks on companies from e-commerce sector. Till last season, these companies were the most sought-after recruiters, thanks to their loaded pockets and the surging start-up wave in the country.

National Institute of Technology (NIT), Surathkal, NIT-Trichy and Motilal Nehru National Institute of Technology (MNNIT), Allahabad are also pursuing similar strategies for their ongoing and upcoming placements. 
 
"Barring some big names such as Amazon and Paytm, e-commerce companies will have difficulty attracting the best students this year," said a professor in charge of placements at a top NIT on the condition of anonymity. 
 
Last season, as many as 42 students from BITS Pilani, got their offers from start-ups like <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Flipkart-calls-deferring-joining-dates-of-campus-recruits-a-tough-decision-but-necessary/articleshow/52437180.cms">Flipkart</a> and Grofers deferred or revoked. Taking a lesson from that, the placement team has, this time, allowed only five to six recruiters from e-commerce and start-up sector to hire their students from the campus.

G Balasubramanian, chief placement officer (India and Dubai) at BITS Pilani, said that the institute will now ask new recruiters in said sectors to sign an agreement that states that they are liable to pay six months' compensation along with an experience certificate in case they revoke a job offer.

NO STARTUPS AT DTU THIS MTH 
Delhi Technological University, which started its placement season a few days ago, has decided that no start-ups would be invited for the entire first month of the season. They have only allowed one e-commerce company, Amazon, to attend the placement season. Other e-commerce companies and start-ups could be allowed to attend placements much later, in the second phase of the placements.

MUMBAI: <keyword id="6355629" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Google">Google</keyword> has set the placement season at top non-IIT engineering colleges off to a rocking start, offering $2,35,000 (Rs 1.44 crore) to BITS-Pilani students who make the cut for international vacancies, according to campus sources involved in the process. <keyword id="10387" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Microsoft">Microsoft</keyword> is offering Rs 79.51 lakh for jobs at its Redmond headquarters. 
 Last year, Google and Microsoft had offered top salaries of Rs 68.34 lakh and Rs 60 lakh, respectively. Reflecting upbeat business sentiment, aggressive recruiters including <keyword id="18635" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Amazon">Amazon</keyword>, eBay, Flipkart, Schlumberger and lesser-known startups such as CodeNation have hiked pay packets by up to 25 per cent compared with the previous year, mostly for domestic jobs. 
 
They are also stepping up hiring in a big way. “There has been more than 40 per cent growth in the number of recruiters this year and the Goa campus has seen a 100 per cent increase,” said G Balasubramanian, chief placement officer at BITS-Pilani University. 
 
The college has 4 campuses across Pilani, Goa, Hyderabad and Dubai. “Salary packages have gone up by an average of 20 per cent at several companies,” said Samuel Rajkumar, deputy director (placements), VIT University. 
 
Placements at the non-IIT campuses are a precursor to campus hiring at IITs, which kick off in December. Early indications at these institutes suggest that happy days are here again for the job market. 
 Epic Systems with a $1,08,300 (Rs 66.4 lakh) offer and Schlumberger with $1,05,000 (Rs 64.4 lakh) are the other top paymasters soon to arrive on campus during the placement season. According to campus sources, <keyword id="6361649" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Goldman-Sachs">Goldman Sachs</keyword> paid Rs 13 lakh this year for roles in the technological division compared with Rs 11 lakh last year. 
 
 
 
 
For strategy roles, Goldman Sachs has paid up to Rs 35 lakh this year at certain campuses. Amazon has offered Rs 25 lakh to three students of Motilal Nehru National Institute of Technology (MNNIT), Allahabad, and NIT-Calicut. 
 At NIT-Warangal and NITK-Surathkal, the offers were for Rs 18 lakh. This is for domestic jobs. Rival Flipkart is offering Rs 15 lakh plus benefits across campuses and its subsidiary <keyword id="319719" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Myntra">Myntra</keyword> is picking up students for a similar amount but through a separate process. 
 AT NITK-Surathkal, Flipkart has been given the ‘dream company’ status along with <keyword id="28120" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Linkedin">LinkedIn</keyword>, Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs. All students can sit for interviews at these firms even if they have other offers. 
 
Even lesser-known startups are waging a fierce war for engineering talent. Code-Nation — which develops high-quality enterprise software — is offering Rs 24 lakh across campuses, substantially more than Flipkart. It has hired from NIT-Warangal, VIT-University and will visit NITK-Surathkal in the next few days. It is looking to hire 35-40 students overall, the company has said on its official website. As always, Esops are also in play. 
 
LinkedIn is offering stock options worth $40,000 and a Rs 1.3 lakh bonus over and above a Rs 13 lakh salary. “Our placements started around 10 days ago. Around 50-60 offers have been made by 15-odd companies so far, not including PPOs,” Sumit Mishra, placement coordinator, MNNIT-Allahabad. The college has 800 students. Placements will go on for a few more months.

Samsung had hired 1200 engineers in 2019 as well from these top colleges, but they joined the company in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The reason behind this massive hiring was its main agenda to strengthen their R&amp;D centres. “This is part of our continued growth and expansion plans in India. For us R&amp;D has been on the front. We opened our first R&amp;D centre in India in 1996 in Bengaluru, and a factory in the same year. This shows our commitment to the Indian market and India-related product and talent,” Wadhawan added. The smartphone maker company witnessed a high attrition rate in the last couple of months. “Attrition rate is slightly higher than usual and it is more to do with the simple demand and supply issue, also there are so many tech jobs available, but the situation is not alarming for us”, he said. Attrition rate, also known as churn rate is the rate at which employees leave the company and is often calculated as an annual figure. Samsung, in their third quarter results which came out in October, reported a 28% increase in their operating profit from its previous quarter. The healthcare platform was created by students of the <keyword id="472692" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Birla-Institute-of-Technology-and-Science">Birla Institute of Technology and Science</keyword> (BITS), Pilani in <keyword id="6355588" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="rajasthan">Rajasthan</keyword>. Anurag Prasad, Vaibhav Singh, Shashvat Tripari and Chetan Anand came up with the idea of the AI-powered chatbot that dispenses health advice in 2016. The ‘advice’ it gives out is based on assisting doctors and learning from them. Stone <a href="https://medium.com/@biz/why-im-investing-in-visit-d3296c45d293">explains</a>, “People interact with the ‘Visit’ chatbot by sharing some symptoms. The bot follows up with relevant questions to collect more symptoms and risk factors (is the person hypertensive, diabetic, a smoker). This triaging is conversational and low stress.” How does Visit work? Visit takes queries from multiple people and learns from them. Since many queries will be the same, it allows the AI to learn more and pick patterns. In order to do so, Visit dispenses advice based on over 20,000 probabilistic relationships between variables (variables being family history, symptoms, conditions etc). This implies that if you have certain symptoms that may be more pertinent to a pre-existing condition in the family, then the probability calculations of that situation would be skewed to take that into consideration. The bot takes into account factors such as symptoms, risk factors, patient history, living conditions etc. Once the bot is able to determine which medical condition needs to be addressed, it connects the patient to a health specialist from anywhere across the country. Visit currently has over 2,000 doctors who can be contacted via video chat, phone or text. And it’s not a one-time deal. Patients will apparently have the option of keeping in touch with their practitioner for a follow-up. Stone also adds, “The objective is not to replace the doctor but to help practitioners in an assistive way by regular patient check-ins and reminders related to their care plan.” According to him, the goal behind Visit is to address the shortage of doctors in the nation using AI. In support of which he wrote - “Accessibility to quality health care advice is an overwhelming problem in a country with over 200 million people affected by lifestyle problems like stress, chronic conditions, obesity, skin conditions and more. This is where the technology approach by ‘Visit’ comes in.” The situation in India is <a href="http://indianexpress.com/article/india/less-than-one-doctor-for-1000-population-in-india-government-tells-lok-sabha-4760892/">reportedly</a> as bad a 921 patients per doctor. Platforms like Visit could make it easier for people to access healthcare services and doctors, exponentially. Visit isn’t alone in its endeavour. Many online consultancy services such as quickconsult, Practo, Portea and Zoylo already exist but they’re still depend on man-power exclusively. Visit has the potential to be largely self-reliant once the AI has reached a point where it has enough information.
