"We have entered into a 10-year partnership with IBM's 's global business services arm to digitise our IT network for operating the Kempegowda airport," said <keyword id="436900" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bangalore-International-Airport-Ltd">Bangalore International Airport Ltd</keyword> (<keyword id="56145" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="BIAL">BIAL</keyword>), a public-private consortium that operates the country's third largest airport, in a statement here. Red Hat automation and Kyndryl, an entity of IBM's managed infrastructure services business, will partner with the US-based IT behemoth to create an airport in a box platform to transform the travel experience of passengers. "As one of the fastest-growing airports, we needed a nimble, scalable and cost-competitive technology to handle growth in passenger traffic in the future, with operational flexibility," said the operator. The new platform is expected to improve the operator's employee productivity, better utilisation of its IT assets, reduce costs through inventory control and improved incident management. "The IBM platform will support the operator's business growth and generate AI (artificial intelligence)-powered insights from IBM Maximo enterprise asset management technology to optimise inventory management and the cost of ownership," said BIAL in the statement. When the platform goes operational and enhances travel experience of fliers, the twin partners plan to advance the platform for the transformation of global travel and transportation industry. "The partnership with IBM is part of our vision to make the airport smart, digitised, connected and intuitive," said BIAL chief executive Hari Marar on the occasion. Bengaluru Airport City breaks ground for 2 million sq. ft. business park

Kempegowda International Airport Bengaluru (KIAB / BLR Airport) reported a strong growth in passenger numbers and maintained its leading position in processing perishable cargo, it said. The increase in passenger volumes in FY23 can be attributed to post-pandemic operations resumption, as well as the re-introduction of key routes and the initiation of new routes connecting leading business hubs and travel destinations. Bangalore Airport is now connected to a total of 100 destinations, 75 destinations across India, and 25 international, contributing to a steady recovery, it said. The airport in 2022-23 saw Akasa launching its services from the airport, Qantas' service to Sydney and the launch of daily Airbus A380 services to Dubai by Emirates, BIAL said. "With the recent launch of Terminal 2 (T2), we are better equipped than ever before, to maintain our standing as the preferred gateway to South and Central India," said Satyaki Raghunath, Chief Strategy and Development Officer, BIAL. The recovery in air transport movements (ATMs) saw 50.8 per cent overall growth in the previous fiscal with domestic ATMs growing 49.8 per cent year-on-year while international growth stood at 59.6 per cent, BIAL said. On February 26 this year, the airport recorded the highest number of passengers for the fiscal 2022-23 at 114,299 passengers, which was also the highest number of passengers on a single day since the airport opened in 2008, it stated. Major international airlines have reinstated their operations from Bengaluru during the fiscal, BIAL said. The airport also said it has maintained its position in cargo as India's leading airport for handling perishable cargo for the third consecutive year. The airport has processed 44,143 MT of perishable cargo in the current year till January 2023 (full-year results awaited) and 52,366 MT during FY22, the airport operator said. Passenger traffic at Bangalore airport up 96% at 31.91 million in FY23

New Delhi, Mar 12 () Bangalore Airport has seen a 50 per cent dip in international traffic in March amid travel restrictions by a host of countries and subsequent flight cancellations due to coronavirus concerns. Bangalore International Airport Ltd (BIAL), in a statement on Thursday also said domestic passengers volume has also been squeezed by 2-4 per cent and it may dip further if the number of coronavirus cases go up further. The number of coronavirus patients in India rose to 74 with the reporting of 14 fresh cases from various states as well as one foreign national, according to the Union Health Ministry. "Traffic at Bangalore Airport has been affected by the Coronavirus, like most other airports globally. International traffic has dropped by 20 per cent from normal levels (before COVID19 was detected) in February and almost by 50 per cent from normal levels in March," BIAL said in a statement. Against an average daily international passenger volume of around 14,000-15,000, only around 6,000-7,000 international passengers are arriving at Bangalore airport per day, the statement added. Earlier in the day, Civil Aviation Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said the number of international passengers arriving at the country's airports has come down to around 62,000 per day from 70,000 in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak. The count is expected to decline further to 40,000 following the fresh travel restrictions announced by the government on Wednesday. Although domestic traffic has not shown a dramatic drop, there is already an impact of up to 2-4 per cent on domestic travel. While a lot of airports around the world already implement paperless boarding, India is yet to take-off on this initiative. DigiYatra has already started installing their automated security system in Varanasi at the Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport where the airport director, AK Rai, has speculated that the airport will be ready go live with their services by October. In addition, the DigiYatra scheme will also extend to the Visakhapatnam airport and the Kolkata airport as well. That being said, government projects run the risk of not being on time, so there’s a high possibility that BIAL might actually be India’s first paperless boarding airport. The first phase of their roll-out will include Jet Airways, Spice Jet and Air Asia in the first quarter of 2019. If done on time, BIAL could be the first airport to have a end-to-end solution of paperless air travel.

"Today @airindiain@flyspicejet @goairlinesindia&amp;@IndiGo6E will operate 9 flights from Pune with 56.5 lakh doses to Delhi, Chennai, Kolkata, Guwahati, Shillong, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Vijayawada, Bhubaneswar, Patna, Bengaluru, Lucknow &amp; Chandigarh," Union Civil Aviation Minister Hardeep Singh Puri, said in a tweet. Last week, Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) issued guidelines to airlines and other aircraft operators for transportation of Covid-19 vaccines. As per the guidelines, authorised airlines can carry the vaccine packed in dry ice in the passenger or the cargo cabin. The circular noted that the carriage of Covid-19 vaccines from the manufacturing units to the place of administration gains significant importance especially in the light of the high expectations of the governments, healthcare personnel and the general public. Sector wise, IndiGo transported 900 kg of vaccine from Pune to Chandigarh and Lucknow via flight 6E 6515 and 6E 882 respectively today. From Wednesday, it will transport the vaccines from Mumbai to other cities, basis the allocation. On its part, GoAir operated two flights from Pune to Chennai ferrying 708,000 doses of the vaccine. "While our efforts to alleviate the complexities of the vaccine movement given the scale of the consignments and logistics, we are taking every possible step to support the institutions and our stakeholders to reach the vaccine in all possible corners of the country," said GoAir CEO Kaushik Khona. "This responsibility of vaccine shipment recognises the efforts taken by GoAir towards developing its cargo services for critical vaccine movement and motivates us to take the lead in order to remain the preferred choice for the industry." A BIAL spokesperson said that 54 boxes of the Covid19 vaccine, consisting of approximately 650,000 doses arrived at Bengaluru airport from Pune "at 1145 hours on Tuesday, January 12, 2021". Besides, budget airline SpiceJet carried the first consignment of Covid-19 vaccine from Pune to Delhi. The first consignment of Covishield consisted of 2,64,000 doses from Pune to Delhi on SpiceJet flight SG 8937. Subsequently, the Delhi airport received the first consignment of COVID vaccine. "Today, we have received the first batch of COVID-19 vaccine at our airport. Temperature-controlled facility, ranging from -20 Deg C to +25 Deg C, at our two Cargo terminals can efficiently and safely handle these temperature sensitive vaccines," said CEO-DIAL Videh Kumar Jaipuriar. "We have 'Cool Chambers and Cool Dollies' to maintain temperature required for these vaccines at the cargo terminal and during transit between aircraft and terminal or vice versa. Our both the terminals can handle around 5.7 million vials in a day." According to Jaipuriar, DIAL has synergised and collaborated with all the stakeholders including exporters, importers, logistics companies, freight forwarders or agents, government, airlines, cargo terminal operators, to ensure faster turnaround of the vaccines. Furthermore, SpiceJet transported multiple vaccine consignments from Pune to different Indian cities including 276,000 doses to Guwahati, 996,000 doses to Kolkata, 3,72,000 doses to Hyderabad, 480,000 doses to Bhubaneswar, 648,000 doses to Bengaluru, 552,000 doses to Patna and 408,000 doses to Vijayawada on Tuesday. Temperature-controlled facility, ranging from -20 Deg C to +25 Deg C, at our two Cargo terminals can efficiently and safely handle these temperature sensitive vaccines," said CEO-DIAL Videh Kumar Jaipuriar. "We have 'Cool Chambers and Cool Dollies' to maintain temperature required for these vaccines at the cargo terminal and during transit between aircraft and terminal or vice versa. Our both the terminals can handle around 5.7 million vials in a day." "On Day One, SpiceJet is shipping 4 million doses of Covishield vaccine weighing close to 11 tonnes to eight different cities which include Guwahati, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Bhubaneswar, Bengaluru, Patna, Vijayawada and Delhi," said Ajay Singh, Chairman and Managing Director, SpiceJet. Airlines swing into action as vaccine transport commences across the country (Roundup)

<keyword id="46324" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="GVK-power">GVK Power</keyword> and Infrastructure will sell 33 per cent of its stake in Bangalore International Airport Ltd to <keyword id="2948644" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Fairfax-India">Fairfax India</keyword> for Rs 2,149 crore, a deal that will trim the groups debt burden by more than Rs 2,000 crore. 
 
The transaction, expected to be completed by mid-2016, would also help the diversified entity save around Rs 300 crore annually on interest costs. 
 Bangalore International Airport Ltd (BIAL) owns and operates the Kempegowda International Airport <keyword id="6354321" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Bengaluru">Bengaluru</keyword>. The airport started operations in May 2008. 
 
In BIAL, GVK Group holds 43 per cent stake, Siemens Project Ventures GmbH 26 per cent and Flughafen Zurich AG Ltd 5 per cent while state-owned entities Airport Authority of India and Karnataka State Industrial Investment &amp; Development Corporation Limited hold 13 per cent each. 
 
GVK Power &amp; Infrastructure today said it would divest 33 per cent stake in BIAL to Fairfax India Holdings Corp through their wholly-owned subsidiaries in Mauritius for an aggregate investment of Rs 2,149 crore. 
 
"Upon completion of this transaction, there would be reduction of debt burden of around Rs 2,000 crore and would also result in savings of interest costs to the extent of Rs 300 crore per annum," the company said in a release. 
 
Grappling with substantial debt burden, GVK Power has been exploring avenues, including possible IPO of its airport business, to raise funds. 
 
GVK Airport Developers, a wholly-owned subsidiary of GVK Power, had initiated a financing process last year to reduce its debt obligations. 
 
According to GVKs Founder Chairman and Managing Director G V K Reddy, the deal is an important and successful milestone in deleveraging the balance sheet. 
 
"All proceeds from this stake sale shall be used to bring down our debt obligations to our lenders. We chose Fairfax as a partner in BIAL as we have a long standing relationship with its chairman, Prem Watsa and we would look forward to partnering with them in developing Kempegowda International Airport through its next stage of expansion as we develop a new world-class Terminal 2 and a new runway," Reddy told PTI. 
 
The transaction is subject to customary closing conditions and third party approvals including lender consents, and is expected to be completed by mid-2016. 
 
As per the release, multiple offers were received and out of them, Fairfax Group was selected. "GVK shall remain a long term investor and pioneer in airport assets in India. GVK is bullish on the airport sector in India and shall continue to build iconic assets for the country," it added. 
 
Fairfax Indias Chairman Prem Watsa said it would work closely with all stakeholders to manage the stake in BIAL going forward. 
 
G V Sanjay Reddy to continue to lead the management team as Managing Director (MD) of BIAL and G V K Reddy would remain as Co Chairman, he added.

GVK to seal a Rs 2149 crore deal with Fairfax India, selling its stake in Bengaluru Airport

But at NewsCred, a New York City-based content marketing startup, the next-level employee pampering starts on the very first day.
Alexa Biale, a social media strategist with NewsCred, got a taste of this awesome treatment firsthand when she started work at the company a few weeks ago.
She shared photos of her experience with Business Insider. 
"My first day got off to a VIP start when I was picked up by a private driver and chauffeured to the office," Biale said to Business Insider. "This is customary for all new hires and I can attest that it made me feel really special."<div class="KonaFilter image-container"><div class="image"></div></div>

This Startup Treats New Hires To A Ride In A Private Car On Their First Day Of Work

Four of those others were later hospitalized with brain disorders, <a href="http://www.nasdaq.com/article/france-faults-lab-for-failing-to-swiftly-halt-drug-trial-20160204-01139#ixzz3zJ1gj3jl">Dow Jones Business News reports</a>.Biotrial will still be allowed to carry out drug trials, however, the health ministry said.A total of 90 people were involved in the trial of the drug, which was designed to treat mood and movement disorders, French health minister Marisol Touraine said in a news conference, <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/us-france-health-test-idUSKCN0UT131">according to Reuters</a>.One of the volunteers later died, the company <a href="https://www.bial.com/en/pressroom.138/news.140/january_17th_2016.a555.html">reported on its website</a>. Five others were hospitalized after taking the drug.The six volunteers who became ill were all healthy men aged 28 to 49. They began taking the drug on Jan. 7, and by Jan. 10, the first volunteer was hospitalized with a headache and blurry vision. The following day, five more volunteers were given the same dosage of the drug. An hour later, the hospitalized patient's condition worsened, and by the end of the day, he had been declared brain dead, and the trial was suspended on Jan. 11. On Jan. 13, the other volunteers were hospitalized.The cause of the death is still unknown, and a full report will not be published until late March, Dow Jones Business News reports. The other volunteers are now home and their health is improving, but it's too soon to know if they will recover fully, the French health minister said.<a href="http://www.bioworld.com/content/six-hospitalized-bial-clinical-trial-france-0">According to BioWorld</a>, the drug, known as Bial, was intended to act on the brain's cannabinoid receptors, which are involved in a variety of mental functions, including pain relief. A copy of documents sent to the French media by a prospective volunteer describes the drug as a "product in development for the treatment of different medical conditions from anxiety to Parkinson's disease, but also for the treatment of chronic pain of sclerosis, cancer, hypertension, or the treatment of obesity."The trial participants were reportedly paid €1,900 ($2,080).<h2>Clinical trials</h2>Clinical trials are typically conducted in three phases. Phase 1 trials focus primarily on the drug's safety and side effects, while Phases 2 and 3 are larger trials that focus on its efficacy, though safety is still important.The trial was conducted <a href="http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-35320895">by French-based company Biotrial</a>, a licensed private institution that conducts trials of drug safety, tolerability, and pharmacology in healthy volunteers.Such adverse events during a Phase I clinical trial are rare.The European Union has very strict standards for performing clinical trials, Jayne Lawrence, chief scientist at the Royal Pharmaceutical Society, said <a href="http://www.sciencemediacentre.org/expert-reaction-to-news-reports-that-six-people-are-critically-ill-after-taking-part-in-a-clinical-trial-of-a-drug-in-france/">in a statement</a>. "Those in charge of the trial would have had to have shown they had done everything they could to protect patient safety before the trial was allowed to go ahead," she added.Because Phase I trials are used to determine a drug's toxic effects, they "are inherently risky, as unexpected events can - and do - occur," Carl Heneghan, a professor of evidence-based medicine at the University of Oxford, said <a href="http://www.sciencemediacentre.org/expert-reaction-to-news-reports-that-six-people-are-critically-ill-after-taking-part-in-a-clinical-trial-of-a-drug-in-france/">in a statement</a>. Investigators are blaming the lab that conducted a deadly drug trial in France

<div class="image-container float_right" style="width:400px"><div class="image"></div><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Rio_de_janeiro_favela_ipanema_beach_night_2010.JPG">Wikimedia Commons</a></div>Until recently, the most high-profile conflict in Rio de Janeiro's favelas has been between rival gangs fighting turf wars: now it is European investors tussling over a piece of prime real estate.
High on the steep slopes of Vidigal, the panorama across Atlantic beaches and distant islands is among the most spectacular in Rio, but tourists are unlikely to find it listed in most guidebooks.
The hillside shanty town was dominated by drug traffickers and widely considered off-limits among middle-class people.
But the favela is undergoing a transformation as the police have taken control of the streets and investors have pushed up the price of the land.
With gangs no longer deciding who enters their territory, rental prices have surged more than threefold in three years. Wealthy buyers are snapping up the prime plots, real estate companies are opening offices and more outsiders are moving in.
Andreas Wielend, an Austrian engineer, bought a dilapidated home in 2009 and turned it into a hostel and nightclub. It is now famed for breathtaking views and holding dub and electronic music nights that attract several hundred customers to party until dawn. The change is dramatic, but not entirely for the better.
"When we first came here, there were 15 guys with heavy machine guns next door. It was like a war zone. There was no water or electricity," he recalls. "Then the police came in and the house prices went up … It was more relaxed before because you didn't constantly have real estate speculators approaching you all the time."
His neighbourhood has suddenly become one of the most fashionable in Rio. Less than 100 metres away, a hotel is under construction, reportedly financed by two of the city's wealthiest denizens.
A lawyer from São Paulo has snapped up three houses next door. Local gossip is thick with rumours that Hollywood stars Brad Pitt and Angelina Joli have brought land nearby.
Wielend's property cost him 34,000 reals (about £10,000). Now he says he is getting offers of a million reals to sell. The dramatic inflation of values has prompted a ownership battle between him and the German banker who sold him the land.
Last year, Wielend returned from an overseas trip to find the former owner had seized the house, changed the locks and denied that a sale had been made. Wieland has since persuaded the police that he is the rightful owner and taken legal action.
The strains are not unique to this one plot in Vidigal, he says. "Now there are many houses here where people are fighting for ownership, even among families."
Take away the paramilitary campaign against the traffickers and what is happening is similar to the gentrification seen in cities such as New York, London, Berlin and Beijing.
Nicola Tadini, a researcher who is studying the process, said it was a mixed blessing for the community in Videgal, many of whom – as with most of Rio's favelas – are from poor families that migrated from north-east <keyword id="6355226" type="COUNTRY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Brazil">Brazil</keyword>.
"This is a long-term change. The <keyword id="22177" type="SPORT" weightage="60" keywordseo="world-cup">World Cup</keyword> and <keyword id="6360967" type="SPORT" weightage="60" keywordseo="Olympics">Olympics</keyword> are pushing the process. People are investing. Locals can rent their rooms out for more than three times as much as they could three years ago. The little shops on the street are doing more business with tourist customers. Some people are selling their homes here and buying big properties back in the north-east," said Tadini.
"For now, people are happy with the way things are going because they are making more money. But the gentrification will change this community. Instead of neighbour and neighbour, you are starting to see employer and employee."
Among Rio's thousand or so favelas, Vidigal was always somewhat special thanks to its spectacular views, long history and attraction for artists. But it is seen as an indicator of what could happen to the other 39 slums that have been "pacified", or will be by 2014.
The average house price in Rio has increased by 165% over the past three years, according to the UN. Values have risen faster in favelas where the drug traffickers have been pushed out of sight. According to SecoviRio, an association of local real estate agents, property prices rose 50% in the first week after the initial three favelas were taken by police.
Changes are still at a very early stage and are different from favela to favela, as are the responses of locals to the armed police who patrol the roads and narrow alleys between their homes. While the majority of inhabitants that <keyword id="115220" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="The-Guardian">the Guardian</keyword> spoke to were pleased about improved security and social services, several also expressed unease that they may be forcibly relocated or priced out of their homes.
Rocinha – Brazil's biggest slum with at least 70,000 inhabitants – is still far from being gentrified. But a real estate agent, who declined to give his name, said the rental price for a two bedroom home had doubled in the past year to 900 reals a month because more outsiders were moving in.
The authorities have ambitious plans to improve life in the favela, but their priorities have been questioned.
Rocinha now has a new library, where residents can borrow books or watch DVDs on plasma screens, a half-completed eco-park, a tennis court that opened last year and a concrete bridge to the community's sports centre that was designed by the country's most famous architect, Oscar Niemeyer.
But nothing has been done about the stinking open sewers that run through the densely packed community and overflow whenever there is heavy rain. Education and public health provision are also at dire levels. Tuberculosis and dengue fever are rampant. Many people still live in rudimentary shacks with irregular or no water supplies.
"The library and bridge are all very well, but you have to ask if this is the best use of social resources when there are still kids playing in shit and piss," said Lea Rekou, an co-ordinator of the Green My Favela NGO, which works with the local community to replace rubbish tips with vegetable gardens.
Instead of improving the environment for the sake of gentrification or beautification before the World Cup and Olympics, she says the most needed transformation is in attitudes.
"Pacification has opened up a space. You don't need to be so wary. It's easier to relax," she said. "But my main interest is in changing the way the middle class see the favelas – that they need to be controlled and heavily policed."
