India's insurance sector is set to witness remarkable growth, with its Assets Under Management (AUM) projected to surge to $11 trillion by 2047 from $0.7 trillion in 2023, according to a report by Boston Consulting Group (BCG) and India InsurTech Association (IIA). This expansion aligns with India's broader economic goals, including achieving "Health for All" by 2047, as the country's GDP is expected to reach $ 30 trillion by then. The report also highlighted that India's financial assets are also anticipated to grow significantly, climbing to $120 trillion by 2047 from the current $6.4 trillion. However, despite the promising outlook, insurance penetration in the country remains low, particularly in the health and non-life insurance segments. As per the data in the report, India's health insurance penetration is just 0.31%, far below the levels seen in countries like the United States (5.26%) and China (0.77%). Non-life insurance penetration in India stands at 1%, compared to 1.8% in China and 9.3% in the US. On the other hand, life insurance penetration in India is relatively strong at 2.8%. However, it still falls short of the global average of 2.9%. The report stressed the need to increase insurance coverage, particularly in health insurance, where 45% of medical expenses are still borne out-of-pocket by individuals. Multiple macroeconomic tailwinds are already driving growth in the industry. The goal is to achieve 100% coverage for all citizens and reduce out-of-pocket medical expenses to less than 10%. India envisions becoming the world's third-largest insurance market, with over 10 companies in the global top 50 and more than 100 insurtechs operating at scale. It said, "Driving penetration is a key focus area; Health insurance is most underpenetrated, with 45%+ medical spends still out of pocket." The report highlights that while India has made significant strides in improving insurance penetration, there is considerable scope for growth, especially in the health and non-life insurance segments. The report, Seeing the Big Picture - Harnessing digital to drive M&amp;E Growth, analyses the increasing influence of digital in driving media and entertainment consumption in India across over-the-top (OTT), linear TV (LTV), and movie studios. Digital influence implies the role of digital in content discovery, sharing and engagement, both before and after viewing content. The BCG-Meta report is based on a survey of over 2,600 consumers across 15 towns and cities and it busts several perceptions about media consumption. “Contrary to industry perception women, small-town residents, and people over 35 years of age have significant digital influence driving their content discovery and consumption choices,” revealed the report. Among OTT watchers, 78% of men and 77% of women used digital to engage with the content after watching it. This number is the same for people from small towns and large towns - 72% use digital to engage with content post-watching. Similarly, before watching something on OTT, more people from smaller towns (81%) use digital for content discovery than people from large towns (74%). In the same segment of OTT watchers, 70% of men and 66% of women used digital for content discovery. “The prevalent view presumes that consumer behaviour across small and large towns, across gender and age groups, is vastly distinct. Additionally, 50% of audiences engage with content post watching, significantly even for LTV. “Digital discovery is on the upswing, even for linear TV, with linear TV viewers increasingly seeking information and engagement online for the content they watch,” reveals the report. As per the report, 67% of men and 65% of women use digital to discuss TV shows post watching them. After rallying for two straight days, the 30-share BSE Sensex fell 289.31 points or 0.50 per cent to settle at 57,925.28, with 16 of its constituents posting losses. During the day, the index witnessed a high of 58,396.17 and a low of 57,838.85. The broader NSE Nifty dipped 75 points or 0.44 per cent to end at 17,076.90, with 30 of its scrips ending in the red. "Markets traded volatile and lost nearly half a per cent amid mixed cues. After the initial downtick, the Nifty recovered gradually in the first half however fall in the heavyweights around 17,200 levels again pushed the index in the red. Consequently, it closed at 17,076.90 levels. "Continued pressure in the IT majors and profit-taking in banking and financial counters turned the tone negative," said Ajit Mishra, VP - Technical Research, Religare Broking Ltd. State Bank of India was the biggest loser in the Sensex pack, shedding 1.69 per cent, followed by Asian Paints, Kotak Mahindra Bank, HCL Technologies, Reliance Industries, Wipro, IndusInd Bank, Infosys, Power Grid and HDFC twins. In contrast, Nestle, Maruti, Bharti Airtel, Tata Motors, ITC and Hindustan Unilever were among the gainers. In the broader market, the BSE midcap gauge declined 0.45 per cent and smallcap index dipped 0.15 per cent. "Although the Fed's decision to increase rates by 25 basis points was in line with expectations, concerns were raised by the US Treasury Secretary's statement that blanket insurance for all deposits was not being considered. "The domestic market attempted to recoup its initial losses with the help of favourable US futures as the Fed hinted at its plan to pause rate hikes sooner. However, the recovery was short-lived due to a sluggish start in the European market led by a 50 bps hike by the Swiss National Bank," said Vinod Nair, Head of Research at Geojit Financial Services. Among indices, realty, bankex, IT, financial services, tech and consumer discretionary were the biggest laggards. FMCG, healthcare, telecommunication, utilities and power were among the gainers. As many as 2,053 firms declined, while 1,452 advanced and 129 remained unchanged. In Asia, Seoul, Shanghai and Hong Kong markets ended in the green, while Japan settled lower. Equity markets in Europe were trading in negative territory during the afternoon trade. The US markets had ended sharply lower on Wednesday. "Most Asian stock markets ended in the positive, while European markets were trading lower on March 23 as markets weighed the prospect of a less hawkish Federal Reserve against increased economic headwinds in the coming months. "Investors felt that further increases, along with rates remaining higher for longer, are likely to apply increased pressure on the global economy this year," said Deepak Jasani, Head of Retail Research, HDFC Securities. Meanwhile, global oil benchmark Brent crude dipped 0.90 per cent to USD 76 per barrel. Foreign Portfolio Investors turned buyers on Wednesday as they bought equities worth Rs 61.72 crore, according to exchange data. "Domestic equities swing between gains and losses after US Fed continued with its rate hike trajectory. Statement by Treasury Secretary to not provide blanket insurance to all the banks distraught the sentiments," Siddhartha Khemka, Head - Retail Research, Motilal Oswal Financial Services Ltd, said. However, a recent series of <keyword id="136281" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="rate-hikes" source="Orion">rate hikes</keyword> has been nightmarish for <keyword id="6354730" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="home-loan" source="Orion">home loan</keyword> borrowers. Between May 2022 and February 2023, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) raised the repo rate by 250 bps. New home loan borrowers who took their loan under the external benchmark-based lending rates (EBLR), have seen their home loan interest rates rise the quickest in tune with the repo rate hike. When the rates move up or down, the industry practice is to change the tenure of the loan as it is convenient for the customer. “However, customers who would not like the tenure of their loan to increase can approach their lender, and increase their EMI or even partly increase their EMI, and partly tenure. There is no cost to change the EMI or tenure,” says Renu Sud Karnad, managing director, HDFC. She adds that most lenders, including HDFC, have a process in place that if extension of the term goes beyond a certain comfort level, the customer is educated about the need to revise the EMI. Hence it is advisable for the customers also to stay in touch with their lenders. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="How the recent interest rate hikes will affect you" comment="subhead2" text="How the recent interest rate hikes will affect you">How the recent interest rate hikes will affect you</cmsannotation> Theoretically, for a 15-year loan, a 2.5% increase from 7% to 9.5% means that the tenure goes up by 90 months or 7.5 years. “For longer tenures like 20 or 25 or 30 years, the additional tenure can be as much as 20 additional years, depending on rate of interest,” says Adhil Shetty, CEO, BankBazaar, an online financial marketplace. Given that the interest rates on home loans have gone up substantially since last year, the lenders prefer to increase the EMI to ensure that the tenure does not go up by more than a few years. “If you are in the middle of your repayment period and have more than twice the remaining tenure to retire – say you are half-way through your 20-year loan and are in your late 30s or early 40s – the lender may extend your tenure instead of increasing your EMIs, especially if you have been prepaying your loan,” says Shetty. However, if you are in your late 40s or early 50s you would have to close the loan by the time you reach <keyword id="25452" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="retirement" source="Orion">retirement</keyword> age. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="What you can do" comment="subhead2" text="What you can do">What you can do</cmsannotation> In such a situation, a borrower has several options open to him. Increase the EMI: If the borrowers have a significant portion to pay off, they can increase their EMI until they are 60 to 65 years of age (depending on their lenders). “In these cases, borrowers can increase their EMI by 5% once a year. This annual exercise will increase your tenure and buy you some more room to pay off the loan amount,” says V Swaminathan, executive chairman, Andromeda Loans, a loan distributor. As a rule of thumb, your home loan EMI should not be more than 35-40% of your income. Even if you stretch this, most banks will restrict your home loan EMI to 50% of your income. Thus, increasing the EMI beyond a certain point is not feasible. Prepay your home loan: Another option is to prepay the home loan, which means paying a part of the loan amount earlier than the planned repayment period. “In the case where it is not possible to increase one’s EMI, one option is to prepay strategically to reduce the impact of the rate hike. Prepayment should be considered only if one has enough savings. In case the customer does not have enough savings, he could instead focus on making small pre-payment each year to increase saving on the home loan,” says Pramod Kathuria, founder &amp; CEO, Easiloan, a digital home loan marketplace. However, out of 5.5 million home loans linked to EBLR, only 0.82 million have the capability to make prepayments to ensure their tenures or EMIs don’t shoot up, as per an analysis by SBI research. Those who are not able to prepay their home loans may consider some other options to pay off their home loan before retirement. Get a co-applicant: “If you are nearing your retirement but still have not repaid a significant portion of your loan, you can try securing a co-applicant or a guarantor,” adds Swaminathan. If the co-applicant’s retirement is at a later stage, one can convince the bank to increase the tenure. Refinance your home loan: The other option is to refinance your home loan. Some lenders have slashed their home loan interest rates in light of reduced demand. “If your current rate is 0.5-1% higher than the prevailing rates, then refinancing your loan to a lower rate may be a good idea. Refinancing to a lower rate and repaying a higher EMI would be even better. Check with your own lender before you refinance, as it may be an easier option,” say Shetty. Having a co-applicant with a good credit score and a steady income may help you avail lower interest rates. Home loan borrowers may also be wondering where the interest rates are headed next. “On the interest rate front, in my personal opinion, we are almost at the end of the rate hike cycle considering that factors like inflation could ebb as crude prices, which have the biggest impact on inflation in India, are down to a 15-month low,” says Karnad. There is no one right option to pay off your home loan before retirement. It depends on your financial situation and the additional monthly outflow you can take up. You can opt for one or all of these options simultaneously, depending on what you can afford. It’s not just the IIMs This has become a common trend across B-schools. XLRI also attracted the highest number of offers from the consulting domain at 26%, this year. This simply mirrored last year’s trend wherein Boston Consulting Group was the leading recruiter. Average salaries went up by 22% at IIM-K IIM Kozhikode, on the other hand, placed over 400 students, witnessing a 22% increase in the average salaries as compared to last year. The average salary for the batch was ₹2.3 million — which <a href="https://indiaeducationdiary.in/iim-kozhikode-registers-100-final-placement-for-largest-batch-ever-closes-process-in-5-days/" data-type="tilCustomLink">went up to ₹2.7 million for the top performing students.</a> “Despite the negative sentiment of the job market, green energy, and e-commerce sectors along with emerging startups — including education technology startups — have hired this year along with the other traditional firms. IIMK has seen a 200% surge in offers from start-ups along with more than 150% increase in the roles from e-commerce firms securing 12.5% of the total offers from these sectors,” said professor Shovan Chowdhury, chairperson of <keyword id="8671808" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="placements-at-iim">placements at IIM</keyword> Kozhikode. At MDI, Gurgaon, Amazon offered the highest package at ₹4 million. And the average compensation too increased by 9.5% at ₹ 2.2 million. While consulting firms are known to pay the highest to the fresh graduates, e-commerce companies like Amazon, Flipkart and Myntra emerged as the top recruiters this year. The study also records that the individual surplus was US $ 5600 for developed countries and US $ 2250 for developing countries. This is indeed a high return of investment.

Mobile Internet will move from person-to-person to person-to-machine and machine-to-machine, integrating physical space with cyberspace. Your mobile can now control your home, lighting and alarm system, record your favorite TV programs, turn on the garden sprinkler etc. A network of seismometers and tide gauges will detect abnormal pressure variations suggesting a possible tsunami or an earthquake and issue real time warning to the communities. 
 
Soon ‘point and click’ technology will be replaced with the ‘point and think’ systems. 
 
Adoption of IPv6 will provide an Internet address for every device, sensor and person and through better network management and security offer better mobile experience.
